Synopsis

Ambitious graduate Marin Collins accepts a four-month internship at a prestigious public relations firm to work on a tech account, but her plans are derailed when she’s assigned to go on the road with touring rock band Kings Quarters, hailed by Rolling Stone as the next big thing.

Enter Brad Osterhauser, the reluctant rock star who would rather be coding computer games than penning Grammy-nominated songs.

Traveling by bus, city to city with a group of practical joking bandmates and a greedy manager, Marin and Brad forge a friendship and forbidden romance over a shared love of Seinfeld episodes, stolen moments and Red Vines.

But when Marin’s accused of betraying her company and the band, will Brad come to her defense or believe she was disloyal to him for the sake of her career?

Told in alternating perspectives of Marin and Brad, Starfish is a contemporary romance of unexpected love, the redemptive power of music and hogging the bed.

Review

I’m sorta new to the “rock star” romance genre.  I’ve read a series in the past that centered around musicians but I don’t think that is what they called that sort of book…yet!

Anyway, this book made me laugh…a lot.  Marin is out of her element initially but finds her groove in helping market a rock band.  The band has several different diverse personality types from the serious to the prankster.  This does not even include the smarmy band manager that really needs to be thrown out.

The story is brilliantly told through the POV of Marin and Brad.  Seeing the events unfold through both of their eyes brings a new dimension to the story that draws the reader in even more.  There are times that I was hurting for Marin due to something Brad said or did, and then find he redeems himself in the next chapter when we learn what he was thinking or meant to say/do but it perhaps didn’t come out right.  I chuckled at how Marin would spread out in the bed when she fell asleep, looking like a starfish.  I felt warm and fuzzy when Marin ended up sick and how Brad took care of her to make sure she would be ok.

Being a member of a rock band isn’t like you might imagine or see in the tabloids.  They are hard working individuals that care about their craft, music.   There are those that are exactly what you see in the tabloids but several members of this group had higher aspirations.  Brad is one of those with larger dreams and I enjoyed seeing him working on that dream between gigs.  Plus I think it is cool to have a musician that is also a computer geek.

I haven’t even mentioned Grace, Marin’s best friend and roommate.  She is a rock star in her own right and a good friend to Marin.  I think Grace deserves a book of her own in the future.

I think there might be another story or two that focuses on the various band members.  But only time will tell if we see those stories emerge.

We give this book 5 paws up.
