Synopsis

Opposites become allies to fool their matchmaking friends in this swoony reimagining of Shakespeare’s beloved comedy, Much Ado About Nothing.

Jamie Westenberg and Bea Wilmot have nothing in common except a meet-disaster and the mutual understanding that they couldn’t be more wrong for each other. But when the people closest to them play Cupid and trick them into going on a date, Jamie and Bea realize they have something else in common after all—an undeniable need for revenge.

Soon their plan is in place: Fake date obnoxiously and convince the meddlers they’re madly in love. Then, break up spectacularly and dash their hopes, putting an end to the matchmaking madness once and for all.

To convince everyone that they’ve fallen for each other, Jamie and Bea will have to nail the performance of their lives. But as their final act nears and playing lovers becomes easier than not, they begin to wonder, what if Cupid’s arrow wasn’t so off the mark? And what if two wrongs do make a right?

Review

This is such a fun series, and I think everyone needs to rush out and read it and soon!

Paige and Glo inherited an inn from their great-grandmother, and in the basement is a magical library. It takes them and six others in their book club into the book to solve the mystery before they are returned home. In this installment, there is a special guest but no spoilers from me!

The book club is thrown into the Wild West, the late 1800s, and many of the amenities they are used to do not exist. They must adapt to not having a phone or even a camera at their fingertips. Luckily, the inn travels with them, and they can still have some creature comforts from home. I think I’d rather use indoor plumbing than an outhouse!

Turns out that there are a couple of mysteries to solve that are intertwined, but they don’t know this until much later. But the gang does well at finding clues and solving the mystery in the end.

I am always drawn into this series because it is so unique, or at least it is to me. I enjoy the banter between the characters, especially the mother/son duo. Forrest is more worldly than his mother would want to admit, but she still tries to shelter him whenever possible. Frank, the talking cat, can be a bit over the top, but he adds flair to the story. Because they end up in paranormal cozies, no one is surprised when he speaks.

I don’t think I figured out the mystery ahead of time. But I enjoyed sorting through the clues with the characters and wondering where the truth would land.

Definitely a series I will continue to read! We give it 5 paws up.

“Stilling’s take on this familiar tale is provocative and poignant, rich with emotion and powerfully described, laced with profound contemplation about dying too soon and growing up too quickly.”- Publisher’s Weekly review of Betwixt and Between

“At turns happy and unbearably sad, Betwixt and Between is a beautifully realized re-imagining of a classic story that will enchant readers as the original did.”- Booklist starred review of Betwixt and Between

“A suspenseful read. Jessica Stilling sets the story among a backdrop of stunning scenes of Greece described as being almost visceral with a unique compilation of romance, mystery, and self-inspection. A compelling story that comes to life off the page.”-San Francisco Book Review of the Weary God of Ancient Travelers

Guest Review by Nora

Paris, 1994. A five-year-old girl is killed in an apartment fire, leaving her mother and older brother devastated. But what exactly happened this day? This is the question that ‘Between Before and After’ by Jessica Stilling answers in a truly astounding fashion.

The story revolves around a man named Sebastian Foster, an Indie movie director who is intent on creating a movie about a young girl’s death. The catch? Sebastian is the girl’s older brother, and the movie is based off of a novel that was written by their mother, Regina.

Perhaps understandably, many people question whether or not it is the right thing for Sebastian to be directing this movie, but he insists that it is necessary for him to do so. Either way, the reader is taken on a journey that is told through two timelines, Paris in present day and Paris in 1994, when Sebastian was a teenage boy. Each new chapter reveals a little more and brings the reader a little closer to unveiling the truth behind what happened during that fated fire.

Personally, I really enjoyed this book. I deeply felt the sense of impending doom as I read along, waiting for the bright, adorable little girl to meet her demise and for the family to be forever changed, and I wondered exactly what kind of hand Sebastian would have in it.

Sebastian was a fascinating and quirky character that I couldn’t get enough of. I found his inner world to be relatable and somewhat comforting despite the fact that he was clearly going through some things while directing the movie.

I also really appreciated the tension between him and his mother and the build-up of animosity between their characters. It said a lot about both characters, in my opinion. This is definitely one to be read, no matter your normal fare. You won’t regret it! I could not put it down!

Excerpt

The summer my mother brought us to Paris I was obsessed with Vikings and the stone of the city reminded me of Charlemagne. Bulging, misshapen, ancient stone that jutted out of the older buildings in the island in the middle of the Seine. Paris was an island before it was a city. I could just picture the iron they used to forge chains to pull the drawbridges up so the Northmen couldn’t get in.

For the most part, our life was pretty normal here. I ate dinner across a kitchen table from my mother in a tiny Euro-kitchen. She poured me glasses of milk and sat on my sister’s squeaky twin bed telling story after story as little Lucy drifted off to sleep. I don’t want to paint a picture of blissful domesticity; it was never domestic and certainly not entirely blissful, but it was our life, and nothing was over the top, blown out of proportion or worth writing a book about. It’s only when you pull the camera back, when you see it from a telephoto, wide angle lens, that it seems dramatic enough to warrant artistic expression. But I’ve learned being raised by a writer, and then later trying to make films, that the only way to understand anything is to turn it into art. To flip a moment, a time, a life, on its head, twist it around, and stare down all angles, until the picture comes into focus.

Only sometimes the picture never comes into focus, and you have to make it all up anyway.

We weren’t rich. That wasn’t how we traveled that summer. My mother made some money off her novels, but she wasn’t able to support herself solely with her writing until I was in college. She picked up teaching jobs and did a lot of freelance work. She was always taking on an article or opinion piece that pulled her away from her novels, but they paid the bills. And there was much more grant money for artists and writers to be had in the ‘90s. In fact, she had a grant that summer and we were staying at the apartment of one of her old friends, who had traveled to Belarus to do research on the Eastern Bloc.

Just before we left for Paris, Philip, my mother’s second husband and my sister’s father, died of lung cancer. I was never close to him. During the four years they were married he spent more time at work than home and when he was around, he was usually locked in his study, a tiny maid’s room off the back hall. I don’t know what he did there. He was some kind of lawyer. But I can count on two fingers the time he joined us for a family outing or bothered to acknowledge me as his stepson, or even just my mother’s kid.

She was about to file for divorce when he got sick. My mother was planning to go when Lucy turned four. She’d gotten an apartment in the West Village and separated their bank accounts. I wasn’t privy to their conversations, but Philip didn’t seem too broken up by the prospect of a “trial separation.”  There was talk of him having a girlfriend, and he’d only asked for every other weekend with my sister.

I don’t know if they made up after he was diagnosed. I don’t think they fell in love again, but pity is a powerful player and my mother stayed, cleaning up his puke and shuttling him to and from chemo, until the funeral was over and all the well-wishers’ noodle-something casseroles had been eaten or thrown away. She gave the eulogy wearing a hat with a veil like British royalty. She cried that night and held tight to one of his old button-down shirts, saying she could still smell him on it (then she wiped her eyes, looked me straight in the face and said, “Don’t’ you ever tell anyone I said something that cliché.”). Philip’s death left a sadness in my mother that took her across the ocean to an apartment in Saint-Michel, the neighborhood where she’d lived in college.

Our first few weeks in Paris weren’t incredibly eventful. My mother, technically a widow mourning her second husband, did not wear black, not even for a week. I’m not sure if that tradition was antiquated by the ‘90s but my step aunt Bernadette was sure upset when my mother picked Lucy and I up from her co-op in New Jersey wearing a solid blue frock and matching heels. “Show some respect for my brother!” she cried, nearly slamming the door in her face.

In Paris, we took Lucy to many of the highly manicured parks nearly every day. My sister used to chase pigeons. She ran on the cobblestones in her little shoes, arms wide in an attempt to scatter as many pigeons as possible.

It had been half a lifetime since I’d come to this city but even as a kid, I recognized the neighborhood. I pointed out to Lucy the statue of the archangel Michael fighting Lucifer, the fallen angel, that stood in the middle of the neighborhood. Shot of: dark haired children sitting on blankets near magazine kiosks begging for money. Shot of: tourists watching a man with an accordion play a sad tune as they threw money in his hat like he was some kind of circus act. Shot of: my mother standing with a piece of paper in her hands trying to figure out the directions her friend had given her.

“It’s this way,” she said, pulling Lucy and found ourselves standing directly behind the Musee de Cluny.

“A castle mommy, a castle!” Lucy cried pointing up at the museum. “We’re going to live by a castle. Can we go there! Can we go!?”

“We can go to the Cluny,” my mother said, half laughing. “It’s a museum. I believe the stuff is from the Middle Ages.”

“Yay!” Lucy cried.

Synopsis

When a mysterious bookshop visitor dies under murderous circumstances, the Christie sisters and their cat Agatha call on all they’ve learned about solving mysteries from their favorite novelist in this new series debut.

Ellie Christie is thrilled to begin a new chapter. She’s recently returned to her tiny Colorado hometown to run her family’s historic bookshop with her elder sister, Meg, and their friendly bookshop cat, Agatha. Perched in a Swiss-style hamlet accessible by ski gondola and a twisty mountain road, the Book Chalet is a famed bibliophile destination known for its maze of shelves and relaxing reading lounge with cozy fireside seats and panoramic views. At least, until trouble blows in with a wintery whiteout. A man is found dead on the gondola, and a rockslide throws the town into lockdown—no one in, no one out.

He was a mysterious stranger who visited the bookshop. At the time, his only blunders were disrupting a book club and leaving behind a first-edition Agatha Christie novel, written under a pseudonym. However, once revealed, the man’s identity shocks the town. Many residents knew of him. Quite a few had reason to want him dead. Others hide secrets. The police gather suspects, but when they narrow in on the sisters’ close friends, the Christies have to act.

Although the only Agatha in their family tree is their cat, Ellie and Meg know a lot about mysteries, and they’re not about to let the situation snowball out of control. The Christie sisters must summon their inner Miss Marples and trek through a blizzard of clues before the killer turns the page to their final chapter.

But with this power comes immense responsibility, for in the Mirror Realm lurks an evil that has infected the human race for centuries: demons. It is up to her and her three huntress sisters–with the help of one handsome and overbearing protector–to hunt and banish this evil one demon at a time, thereby keeping the chaos in check. But when an ancient god pays Alice a visit that turns deadly, it is clear the Mirror Realm is more than it seems, and she soon finds herself in a race against time to save the life–and soul–of the one man the gods are determined to never let her have.

I braced myself for the explosion that was sure to follow once Ananya caught sight of my plane. She got out of the vehicle and stared around her in confusion.

“Where’s your aircraft?”

I pointed to the plane in question.

“That one, right there.”

She took one look at it and rolled her eyes.

“Oh, please! That rust bucket is not a jet,” she pointed out.

“I’m going to ignore the slur on my beautiful plane, and just point out that I never said I had a private jet. I said ‘plane’, and you assumed it was a jet. That’s not my fault.”

“Yashvardhan Rathore, do you seriously expect me to believe that you fly all over the world in that little tinpot? It looks like it will fall apart if you sneeze too loudly!”

“First of all, my plane is a she, not it. Secondly, can you please stop calling her names? She’s very sensitive,” I snapped.

“Fine! But she looks like she’s made of Lego and is held together with duct tape, and if you think I’m risking my neck in that toy plane, you’re crazier than I thought,” Ananya snapped back.

“Stop calling her names! She’s not a tinpot or a rust bucket. She’s a piece of art!”

She was. My Cessna 162 was in mint condition, with nary a scratch or dent. I couldn’t see why Ananya was calling her such nasty names.

She stomped up to the plane and walked around her slowly.

“Umm, Yash… There are only two seats.”

I sighed. I knew this was going to be a problem.

“I know.”

“Where do you propose to stow me? In the cargo hold?”

“That’s very tempting right now, but you will sit next to me.”

“And where will the pilot sit?”

“In the pilot’s lounge, back there,” I said, pointing to the building that we had just exited.

Ananya stared at me, denial and fear clouding her big brown eyes. A man could drown in those expressive eyes, I thought. Not right now, though. Any attempt to dive into those beauties would burn me to a crisp because her glare was hot enough to set me on fire.”

“Don’t f* with me, Your Highness. If the pilot sits in the lounge, who’s going to fly the bloody plane?” she asked through gritted teeth.

It was so much fun to mess with her. I wondered if she’d spit at me when she found out.

“That would be me.”

“What?”

“I’m going to fly the plane,” I clarified, and she turned white.

Synopsis

It’s just a little crush. I can fake date him and not get my heart broken. Really. It’s not like this situation has disaster written all over it.

Meet the newest resident of the quirky, small town of Winter Falls. Clean slate here I come.

Unfortunately, my ex-boyfriend isn’t ready to wipe the slate clean. Maybe because I skipped town and ghosted him?

When the residents of Winter Falls hear my ex is trying to find me, they jump in to help. Their idea of help? Asking Phoenix to pretend to be my boyfriend.

There’s one little problem with this scenario. I have a major crush on the sexy goat farmer, but he doesn’t want a relationship. Even if he did, it wouldn’t be with me. No, I’m too ‘nice’ and ‘soft’. His words. Not mine.

But do I say no? Of course not. I’m not stupid. A chance to be in close proximity to my crush on a daily basis? Where do I sign up?

To my surprise, this fake relationship feels anything but fake once we’re spending all of our days together. Feather light touches, hair kisses, and scorching looks make me start to wonder.

Can we turn this fake relationship into something real?

This fake relationship small town romantic comedy features a shy woman who insists shy and timid aren’t the same thing, a goat farmer who needs to learn his lesson before he loses the girl, a goat named Pan that believes she’s a person and should be treated as such, a gaggle of sisters who think matchmaking is their true calling, and a whole town full of hippies who think being called a busybody is a compliment.

Review

So excited we get to return to Winter Falls and its quirky citizens. This time, we get to know the Dempsey sisters. Their brother, Beckett, is dating Lilac West, so they have already met some of these crazy townsfolk. First up is Gabrielle, the youngest of the sisters. At the end of the last series, we meet her and discover that she has a crush on Phoenix, Lyric’s brother. Yes, it is a small town! Phoenix was burned in his last relationship, so he is hesitant to get involved with anyone and doesn’t think that Gabrielle will last long on his farm. He is no match for the Gossip Girls! After a person from Gabrielle’s past shows up in town, they are forced into a “fake” relationship to try and deter this person. Neither expects to really fall for the other, but we can all see it coming.

There is something about this town that draws me back, time and time again. I always get a chuckle from their antics, and I enjoy watching the characters overcome obstacles and find their destiny. Gabrielle is shy, but her confidence grows as she and Phoenix spend more time together. They have their share of bumps and miscommunication along the way, but that doesn’t stop them from becoming attached to one another.

This town also protects its own, so the person from Gabrielle’s past doesn’t stand a chance. Good thing, too, because he is not a nice person.

I can’t wait for the next book, which will be Elizabeth and River’s story. This is going to be interesting since River is something of a playboy.

We give this book 5 paws up.

I’m not me when I kill people. At least, that’s what I tell myself. I wake up, and I know I’ve done something horrible. My hands are covered in blood, my clothes are gone, and my stomach feels full. I don’t remember what I did. All I remember is the pain. It’s impossible to forget.

Something takes control and pushes me into the dark. I sleep a dreamless sleep, and when I wake up, the nightmare begins.

I don’t know them, the people I’ve killed, the ones I’ve eaten. But I do know they weren’t all bad. I live with the pain because I deserve it.

Review

This is the third book in this series, and I have loved each one. Each story has tugged on my heartstrings, made me laugh, and even cry a little.

The story starts out with Razor (later renamed Rio) being shoved out of a car, and he doesn’t know what is going on or why his man left him behind. Razor is a fighting dog, and we get the impression he must have lost. It was hard to read because I hate when any dog is abused or neglected, or tossed aside. We watch Razor navigate the streets, tending to his wounds, finding things to eat, and just trying to survive.

The story is told from Razor/Rio’s point of view, and it is interesting how he thinks that if he isn’t abused that he isn’t loved. But I think those emotions probably hold true for various people in this world because they have been beaten down and don’t know to expect more.

Rio’s saving grace is when Ben adopts him. They need each other more than they can ever know. It takes time for both of them to adjust to one another, but when they finally do, it is so sweet. But it takes time for both of them to discover the strength that they gain from the other.

The book does have some humorous parts with the addition of Izzy and her chihuahua, Woofy. They are perfect to offset the seriousness of the book.

This book also deals with friendships and emotional attachments that are formed. I don’t think we give enough credit to animals and what they can experience and feel on an emotional level.

This is a lovely book, but if you have problems reading books dealing with abuse or abandonment, you might want to pass this one by.

We give this book 5 paws up.

About the Author

Apart from animals and writing, Steve’s passion is travel. He’s visited 60 countries and enjoyed some amazing experiences, including cage-diving with great white sharks, sparring with a monk at a Shaolin temple, and watching a turtle lay eggs on a moonlit beach. He’s explored Machu Picchu, Pompeii, and the Great Wall of China, yet for all that, he’s a man of simple tastes — give him an egg sandwich and the TV remote control, and he’ll be happy for hours!

He lives in the North of England with his partner, Ania, and two black cats who arrived in the garden one day and liked it so much, they stayed. Graciously, the cats allow Steve and Ania to stay in ‘their’ house.
