An ocelot. A slave. An angel thief.

Multiple perspectives spanning across time are united through themes of freedom, hope, and faith in a most unusual and epic novel from Newbery Honor–winning author and National Book Award finalist Kathi Appelt.

Sixteen-year-old Cade Curtis is an angel thief. After his mother’s family rejected him for being born out of wedlock, he and his dad moved to the apartment above a local antique shop. The only payment the owner Mrs. Walker requests: marble angels, stolen from graveyards, for her to sell for thousands of dollars to collectors. But there’s one angel that would be the last they’d ever need to steal; an angel, carved by a slave, with one hand open and one hand closed. If only Cade could find it…

Zorra, a young ocelot, watches the bayou rush past her yearningly. The poacher who captured and caged her has long since lost her, and Zorra is getting hungrier and thirstier by the day. Trapped, she only has the sounds of the bayou for comfort—but it tells her help will come soon.

Before Zorra, Achsah, a slave, watched the very same bayou with her two young daughters. After the death of her master, Achsah is free, but she’ll be damned if her daughters aren’t freed with her. All they need to do is find the church with an angel with one hand open and one hand closed…

In a masterful feat, National Book Award Honoree Kathi Appelt weaves together stories across time, connected by the bayou, an angel, and the universal desire to be free.

Synopsis

High school teacher Emma Lovett is finally recovering from her first year of teaching when she discovers another dead body. As if that wasn’t bad enough, this time, someone has killed a student, Kisten Hollis.

Emma and her best friend, Leslie, are desperate to solve this murder. But suspects abound. The perpetrator could be a teacher, an administrator, a member of Kisten’s zealous church community, or even another student.

Emma must juggle her teaching responsibilities, her new romance with handsome Hunter Wells, and interest from a hunky second suitor, all while searching for evidence to bring a killer to justice before someone else dies.

Review

What a fun follow up to the first in this series.  I am really enjoying the antics of Emma and Leslie and what they will go through to solve a murder.  They remind me of Nancy Drew with their sleuthing and finding themselves on the edge of getting into more trouble than they had planned.  In this book, there are a few times where the case and their efforts to solve the murder puts a small strain on their friendship but I also think it is Leslie overreacting in some situations.

The mystery portion is well written because I did not suspect the killer at all!  I didn’t have anyone in mind and looking back I remember a few vague clues that might have pointed me in the right direction but there is nothing that really points to this character.

I enjoyed the different plot lines throughout the story and how everything came together in the end and made sense.  There is some good news and bad news when the dust settles but it really brings out some discussion on some important topics like adoption.

It wouldn’t be a book without some romance between Emma and Hunter and they are able to take their relationship a step further.  However, Dr. Will has his eyes on Emma and while he knows she is taken that doesn’t stop him from being interested in her and sharing those thoughts with her.  Will she stay with Hunter or will Will have a shot?

We give this 4 paws up and really enjoy this series!

Excerpt

Just before she entered the stage door, a drop of rain hit her on the head. No, that was not a bad omen, only a reminder to do her best, to shine like the star she was, or would be. Wilsie came running up—Mr. Sissle was there, but Mr. Blake had yet to arrive. “You’ll knock ’em dead, Tumpy. Just do your dancing and forget the rest.” Josephine didn’t need to be told that. She was ready.

She flexed and stretched her arms as she walked with Wilsie across the stage, past the musicians gathering, trumpets and saxophones and drums and a clarinet, down into the auditorium, where a slender man spoke to a white-haired man at his side. He turned his head very slightly and looked her up and down from the corners of his shrewd, hard eyes. His mouth pursed.

“How old are you?” he’d said before Wilsie had even introduced them. The stage door opened, and a very dark-skinned man with a bald head hurried in, talking about “the damned rain,” scampering down the steps, striding up the aisle, shaking water from his clothes.

“Eubie Blake,” he said, smiling, holding out his hand to her.

“This is Tumpy, Mr. Blake, the one I told you about,” Wilsie said. “She’s here to audition for Clara’s spot in the chorus.”

The man with Mr. Sissle—the stage manager—motioned to her and she followed him up the stage steps. Did she know the songs? Could she dance to “I’m Just Wild about Harry”? Josephine wanted to jump for joy. She pretended to watch as Wilsie showed her the steps, which she already knew as if she’d made them up herself. Josephine stripped down to her dingy leotard, tossed her clothes on a chair, then ran and leaped to the center of the stage. This was it. She bent over to grasp her ankles, stretching her legs, then stood and pulled her arms over her head.

“Ready?” Mr. Sissle barked. The music started, and she began the dance, so simple she could have done it in her sleep. Practicing in the Standard, she’d gotten bored with it and had made up her own steps, throwing in a little Black Bottom, wiggling her ass and kicking her legs twice as high as they wanted to go, taken by the music, played by it, the instruments’ instrument, flapping her hands, step and kick and spin and spin and squat and jump and down in a split, up and jump and kick and spin—oops, the steps, she didn’t need no damn steps, she had better ones—and kick and jump and wiggle and spin. She looked out into the auditorium—a big mistake: Mr. Blake’s mouth was open and Mr. Sissle’s eyes had narrowed to slits. Don’t be nervous, just dance. Only the music remained now, her feet and the stage.

When she’d finished, panting, and pulled on her dress and shoes, Wilsie came running over, her eyes shining. “You made their heads spin, you better believe it,” she whispered, but when they went down into the aisle Josephine heard Mr. Sissle muttering.

“Too young, too dark, too ugly,” he said. The world stopped turning, then, the sun frozen in its arc, every clock still, every breath caught in every throat. Mr. Blake turned to her, smiling as if everything were normal, and congratulated her on “a remarkable dance.”

“I can see that you are well qualified for our chorus, Tumpy,” he said, and on his lips, the name sounded like a little child’s.

“You have real talent, and spark, besides. How did you learn to do that at such a young age? You are—how old?”

“Fifteen,” she said.

Mr. Sissle snorted, and cut Wilsie a look. “Wasting my time,” he said. Mr. Blake looked at her as if she’d just wandered in from the orphanage.

“I’m very sorry, there’s been a mix-up,” he said. “You must be sixteen to dance professionally in New York State.”

“I’ll be sixteen in June,” Josephine said. Her voice sounded plaintive and faraway.

“We need someone now.” Mr. Sissle folded his arms as if she were underage on purpose. Mr. Blake led her toward the stage door, an apologetic Wilsie saying she hadn’t known. Mr. Sissle followed, talking to Mr. Blake about adding some steps to “I’m Just Wild about Harry,” saying they should put in some kicks, that he’d been thinking about it for a while. Uh-huh.

“Come and see us in New York after your birthday, doll,” Mr. Blake said. “You never know when we might have an opening.” He opened the door and let the rain pour in before shutting it again. He looked at Josephine’s thin, optimistic dress. Where was her umbrella? She hung her head. He stepped over to retrieve a black umbrella propped against the wall and handed it to her. She took it without even knowing, her thoughts colliding like too many birds in a cage. She would have to stay in Philadelphia, she had failed—too young, too dark, too ugly—she should have lied about her age, what had gotten into her? Showing off, that was what.

And now Mr. Sissle disliked her, and she would never get into their show; it didn’t matter how many times she went back. As she stepped out into the rain with that big umbrella in her hands unopened and felt the rain pour down her face; she was glad, for now they would think it was water instead of tears, but when she looked back, Wilsie was crying, too, in the open doorway.

Seeing the men watching from a window, she stopped. They wouldn’t forget her; she’d make them remember. She walked slowly, her silk dress dripping, while Mr. Sissle gesticulated with excitement as he stole her ideas—authentic Negro dancing were the last words she’d heard—and Mr. Blake looking as if he wanted to run out there, scoop her up, and carry her back inside.

Review

I am not a history buff but I do enjoy learning about influential people in our past that made an impact on our world.  Josephine Baker is such a person from her civil rights activism to being a part of the French Resistance…this doesn’t even cover her dancing career which made quite a statement for the time period.  I will admit that I had heard her name but really didn’t know much about her life so I was glad to be able to read this book and glean a little insight into what made Josephine Baker tick and how she became the woman she was in our history.

Josephine had a tough childhood, one that no one should have to endure.  That being said, I think what she was exposed to made her a tough individual and shaped her as a young woman. She learned to look out for herself but that doesn’t mean that she knew what she was doing or what her best interests were at the time.  She was still a teenager when she moved to Paris and started dancing in various shows….nude at that!  Her immaturity was obvious but I wouldn’t have expected anything different.  She was still a babe in the woods with much to learn about life and who to trust or not trust.

This is a biography so while the story is well researched there is an element of fiction since some of the conversations are probably assumed or embellished to make for a more interesting read.  I think my favorite parts were the beginning and learning about her childhood (which will break your heart) and the last quarter of the book where we learn more about her role during WWII.  I enjoyed watching her mature as a young woman and perhaps realize that no one is to be trusted except yourself.  I did think that the middle half of the book seemed somewhat repetitive.  Granted it was her dancing career but it felt like Josephine was out of control (and she may have been) and was not looking out for her own best interests.

Overall I enjoyed the book and learning more about this iconic entertainer.  We give it 4 paws up.

When Earl’s bride Morgan vanishes in the Smoky Mountains on their honeymoon, the former Navy SEAL is certain she’s been abducted. The park rangers disagree, and after a storm washes away any potential evidence, they call off the official search. Then another man loses his daughter in the same area. Can one last lead help Earl find Morgan before he loses her forever?

Amazon ║ Barnes and Noble ║ Kobo ║ Apple

This is the first book I have read by this author but it won’t be the last!  I think I read this all in one night.

This story is fairly fast-paced from the moment that Earl meets Morgan, to their wedding and honeymoon six months later.  They say you never know where you find love and for Earl and Morgan it was in the dentist office with Morgan treating Earl’s bad tooth.  Now I’m not sure I would want to go camping on my honeymoon but more power to those that like something a little different.  However, the honeymoon does not go as planned when Morgan is abducted from their campsite.  I can’t even imagine what she (or anyone in a similar position) endures at the hands of their captor(s).  The one upside is that Earl has his family supporting him and to Earl, a family is more than just those that are related to you.  I appreciated the stories of how some people came into the family and the hand that Earl extended to someone that was helping him find Morgan as they added a deeper human element.

The story really picked up steam when Earl is contacted for a special mission to rescue women being held in the hills of Tennessee.  I don’t want to spoil anything but I was intrigued by the group of men, their skill sets, their backgrounds, and that they were willing to take on this mission to save these women.  Granted Earl has a personal motive but anyone else could have walked away.

There are some lighter moments and others that make you want to cheer because justice is being served.   I did have an uneasy feeling about one character and turns out I was right to feel that way but you’ll have to read the book to figure out who I might be talking about and how they fit into the plot.

I don’t think I would put this book in the mystery category, maybe more suspense or thriller, but either way, it was still an enjoyable read and we give it 4 paws up.

Bill grew up in the oil and gas refinery town of Phillips in the Texas Panhandle. After graduating from college with a master’s degree, he spent most of his career working for a major insurance company as an agency manager and consultant.

As his retirement was on the horizon, he had an idea about a book. That story, Pepperman’s Promise, became the prequel to The Pepperman Mystery Series, and Perplexity and Panic Point, the next two books in the series, are now available.

Bill and his wife of fifty years live in West Texas.

Message from the Director

There are all kinds of reasons why I wanted to make this film:  It’s a great story from Church history that is hardly known, with terrific conflict and resolve but at the heart of it all, I mainly wanted to make The Fighting Preacher because Willard and Rebecca Bean are wonderful, stalwart examples that throughout their story are funny and entertaining.  Just what a movie should be!

                                                                                        T.C. Christensen – Writer/Director

T.C. Christensen Announces Release Date of New Film – THE FIGHTING PREACHER

-Film opens in theatres on Wednesday, July 24, 2019-

SALT LAKE CITY – T.C. Christensen, the filmmaker behind such popular movies as 17 Miracles, Ephraim’s Rescue, The Cokeville Miracle and Love, Kennedy, recently announced a release date for his newest feature film, The Fighting Preacher.

Produced by Remember Films and distributed by Purdie Distribution, The Fighting Preacher will open in theaters on Wednesday, July 24. Audiences will get their first glimpse of the film when the trailer debuts online, on TV and in theatres on April 2.

Dave McConnell and Cassidy Hubert star as Willard and Rebecca Bean in the movie, based on the couple’s 25-year missionary service in Palmyra, New York. Joseph F. Smith, president of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, called the Beans in 1915 to occupy and operate the recently re-acquired Smith Farm near Palmyra, New York, site of many pivotal events in the Church’s history.

“Not only is the Bean’s missionary service an extraordinary story,” Christensen says, “Willard’s life before the call is fascinating. He was a boxer, fighting his way to middleweight champion of the world in 1905.” Willard’s prowess in the ring plays a role in the movie, when the boxer challenged all comers to take him on in an effort to break the ice with hostile Palmyra residents.

“When we think of pioneers, we automatically imagine church members traveling westward across the plains,” Christensen says. “Although the Beans went the opposite direction, traveling back east to the roots of the church, their pioneering spirit is no less captivating. They faced hostility and hatred, which still lingered in Palmyra, long after Joseph Smith and his followers were driven from the area.” The film dramatizes many miraculous and inspiring events as the Bean family attempts to win over their unwelcoming neighbors and find a place in the community.

Remember Films, headquartered in Farmington, Utah, produces films for family audiences under the direction of writer, director and cinematographer T.C. Christensen.

Purdie Distribution is an independently-owned film distribution company known for releasing independent films nationwide.  Established in 2011, Purdie Distribution led the distribution of SAINTS AND SOLDIERS: AIRBORNE CREED and THE VOID, THE SARATOV APPROACH, FREETOWN, MEET THE MORMONS, ONCE I WAS A BEEHIVE, THE STRAY and is generally focused on films that elevate the human experience. Founder Brandon Purdie played a key role in the establishment of the

family and faith-based film market with his previous work on the release of SAINTS AND SOLDIERS, THE WORK AND THE GLORY trilogy, and FOREVER STRONG.

Synopsis

Mike Papantonio is a novelist who knows his material only too well. One of America’s top plaintiff’s lawyers, Pap – as he’s called by friends and colleagues – has taken on the tobacco companies, the automotive industry, and more. His new legal thriller, LAW AND ADDICTION (Waterside Productions; April 2019), is based on his experiences fighting Big Pharma on behalf of hundreds of American communities devastated by the opioid crisis.

As the book opens, readers meet Jake Rutledge a week before his law school graduation. Jake is shattered. His fraternal twin, Blake, has died suddenly of a drug overdose. Devastated by the loss, Jake returns to his hometown of Oakley, West Virginia to discover that Blake was not the only one addicted to opioid pain killers. The entire region has been ravished by an epidemic insidiously planned and carried out by America’s most powerful pharmaceutical companies.

Still wet-behind-the-ears, the newly-minted lawyer is determined to seek justice not only for Blake, but for all the victims of Big Pharma’s greed. He quickly discovers, though, that he can’t do it alone. The drug companies’ tentacles reach far and deep. The only hope is to entice a seasoned pro like the indomitable Nicholas “Deke” Deketomis to join the battle. A partner at one of the country’s most powerful law firms, Deke’s “as tough as a two-dollar steak” and well-known for his winning tactics against corporate wrong-doers. With just enough persistence, Jake coaxes Deke to visit Oakley to see first-hand why the once thriving town is now called Zombieland. Deke is overwhelmed by the devastation and agrees to join forces with Jake.

And that’s when the real heat begins. Death threats, bribes, unlawful property seizure schemes – all connected to the massive distribution of both legal and illegal drugs. Everyone is impacted from the highest levels of corporate America to corrupt local officals to their lackeys and hapless victims. The complexity of the schemes is overwhelming.

But there is hope. Working tirelessly, the lawyers begin to uncover the truth. Along the way, Jake falls for a local woman, a former high school classmate who’s succumbed to the power of opioids. With his support, she weans herself off the drugs and the future looks bright – until Jake suddenly disappears. Has he abandoned her and his crusade? Can the case against the drug distributors move forward without him? Will Oakley and its residents survive? Mike Papantonio has created a fast-paced thriller that will keep readers glued to the page. LAW AND ADDICTION is real drama about real life – a book that reveals the truth through expert story-telling.

Colonel Hardy looked at his wristwatch. It was almost time for the Court Marshall to begin. But then there were so many trials squeezed into one day that it was natural for his colleagues to be late for this one. He decided to start without them. “So, born in Lahore, eh?” he asked, eyes still on the files.

“Born and brought up there, Sir,” Major Singh replied. “I graduated from Government College, Lahore, and then sat for the Military Entrance Exam, passing which, I went to the Indian Military Academy at Dehra Doon.” Major Singh’s English was impeccable.

“Which year batch was it? “Hardy asked, impressed by the Punjabi’s resume. He himself was an alumnus of the same institute, though a few years junior to this man.

“1936.”

“Good.” Colonel Hardy gnawed his lower lip. So the Punjabi Major was his senior by almost half a decade.

“I was commissioned as Second Lieutenant on the Special List in early 1939,” Singh said, standing straight in the dock. “2nd Battalion. The Highlanders!”

“Secunderabad, right?”

“Indeed. A boring year until we were sent to the Far East to hold a garrison in a quaint little British port.”

Colonel Hardy read further. “Singapore, huh.”

“The war was soon to come.”

Hardy smiled as he went through the war records in the files. “I see one promotion after another. In less than six months, you were Acting Captain.”

“I served with distinction. Your army promotes on talent alone; I’ll give you that.” Singh bowed.

Colonel Hardy closed the files and looked up. “Japanese prisoner-of-war in Malaya, 1941 – what happened?”

“I was captured in Malaya.” Singh twisted his thick mustache. “I had taken my regiment on a midnight raid on the Japanese docking station on the island of Java.”
