How did Albert Einstein come up with his wondrous theories of light and time? In Einstein’s Compass: A YA Time Traveler Adventure, a young Albert is given a supernatural compass that allows him to travel through time and space and find wisdom in other dimensions, including the lost city of Atlantis. But evil forces seek the power of the compass, including a monstrous, shape-shifting dragon from a different age. Can the compass protect Albert from such villainy?

Praise

“This is an amazing story. Everyone should thoroughly enjoy reading it. I was impressed with how the authors managed to incorporate the known information on the lost continent of Atlantis, Light Workers, souls, reincarnation, time travel and the early years of Albert Einstein before he became famous, into a mesmerizing work of fiction readers will have difficulty putting down.  –Doug Simpson, Author of We Lived in Atlantis

“I could not stop reading this book. I read at stop lights and in line at the grocery store. I couldn’t turn the pages fast enough.” –— award-winning children’s author, Lisa Reinicke

This is highly recommended for those who enjoy a saga of good vs. evil that spans tens of thousands of years, for readers who devour novels that blend history and fantasy, and for anyone who is simply looking for a unique story that they will not want to put down.  — Author Jacqui Murray, Ask a Tech Teacher blog

The weaving of the story between the religion realm and Albert’s world is a captivating tale that keeps the reader’s attention. The good and evil of the timeless religious realm is like watching a chess match to see who outwits whom … I hope there is a next book somewhere in my future. –- Rox Burkey, author of the Enigma Series

Time Travel – check
Historical – check
YA – check
Fantasy – check
Fascinating read – check

As you can see, this book checked off a lot of boxes for me and what I like to read.  (Ok, the fantasy genre depends on the book).  But this melds the past and present, time travel, and even some religious aspects with great ease.  I noticed that the book was well researched because many facts of Albert Einstein’s life matched up to another book I read last year, so that made me happy that I didn’t have to run off and figure out which book was right and which one was wrong!

This is a classic good vs. evil plot line – but with some unique twists.  There are light workers which could translate to Guardian Angel in a way since that is how one appears to young Albert when he needs some help.  They are on the religious side because there are references to Jesus, Moses and other biblical figures you might recognize.  Then there is Raka who has managed to survive many centuries only to awake to create havoc in his quest for the Compass which he feels will grant him anything he desires.

There are many characters that are woven into this story that add dimension and kept me engaged in the story from start to finish.  The story was a fairly steady pace until the end as the conflict between Einstein and Raka escalated and the story really took off and moved at a fast pace.

There are times that I gasped at certain events that crushed my heart and other times that I was amazed at the depths of evil from various characters.  I wondered about their sanity but they were the right balance to offset the good characters so that the story wasn’t overly sweet and innocent.

We enjoyed this book and give it 5 paws up!

Title: The Magical Christmas Do Over
Author: Linda West
Publisher: Morningmayan Publishing
Pages: 320
Genre: Holiday

Synopsis

Three women, thrown together by fate, get a second chance to go back in time and change their lives forever.

Excerpt

It was a cold December eve, some say the coldest in decades, and a blizzard warning was in effect. It was the Friday before Christmas and most of the other workers of Kennedy and Crane had already left for the Christmas holiday weekend.

Samantha looked at the clock and groaned inwardly. It was after 8 o’clock and her boss was in an extra foul mood even for her.

“Shouldn’t you be getting home to put on that awesome Chanel dress you bought for the big night?” She asked.

Macy spun around enraged, and Samantha sunk back.

Macy’s dark brows knit together and her brown eyes looked nearly black with the size of her pupils. She ran her hands through her short dark hair and then stared at Samantha with disbelief on her face.

“I got a text from Todd an hour ago. He’s gone off to LA with some friends for Christmas!”

Samantha’s mouth fell open. “What, why?” She stopped herself. “I’m sure he has a good reason Macy.”

Macy snorted. “Yeah, good reasons usually don’t come in a text. I’m losing him Sam.”

Macy plopped down in her chair and stared out the large picture window of her sleek office, and tapped her long manicured nails on her desk like a woodpecker.

“Says he’ll call me when he gets back…in a month.”

Samantha’s groaned inwardly. Poor Macy, it looked like she was getting the ultimate big let down. Broken up with at Christmas. No engagement celebration after all.

“Here’s a piece of mail you didn’t get.” Sam offered up happily as she placed it on Macy’s desk.

“Send it back.” Macy said dully without turning.

Samantha continued hopefully. “It’s not the annual Christmas invite from your mother Macy, that one is always in a red envelope. I always send that back. This is something different.”

Samantha looked at the pretty Tiffany blue colored envelope.

“It’s addressed to you personally, not the company.”

Macy cocked her head to the side intrigued.

Sam rushed on eager to bring some sort of happiness to her boss. “Maybe it’s a love letter from Todd with two tickets to Paris for when he gets back?”

Macy let out a big huff and gazed out the window at the oncoming storm. They both knew that wasn’t the case. Todd’s last minute text was just a breakup in disguise.

But if not Todd then who? Macy really didn’t have any close friends that would send her a Christmas card. Anyone that did know her at all, knew she abhorred Christmas. Too much money being spent in the name of sentimentality and tricky marketers as her father always said.

Macy waved her hand without looking back at Samantha as if she were a servant.

“Read it.”

Samantha scanned the letter, then suddenly, caught her breath and brought her hand to her heart.

“Macy.”

Something in Samantha’s tone made Macy spin her chair around.

“What?”

“Its from a friend of your mothers, a Ms. Carol Landers.”

“You have got to be kidding me!” Macy threw her hands up in the air.

Now my mother is having her friends beg me to come home and visit her? How utterly selfish!”

She shook her head in disbelief. “What is it with my mother? She ruins my life and then she stalks me! Can’t she see no matter how many times she begs me to come home for Christmas – I’m not going to Kissing Bridge to see her?”

Samantha swallowed uncomfortably and croaked out, “I’m so sorry Macy. But this letter says that your mother passed away yesterday, and you’re the only relative left to claim her body.”

She looked up sadly and met Macy’s stunned eyes.

“You have to go home to Kissing Bridge.”

About the Movie

The children in Millie’s family can’t wait for Grandma to arrive with her special Christmas apron. According to tradition, each grandchild will write down the gift he or she wants most in the world, and then slip that wish into the apron’s pocket. Then, on Christmas morning, those wished-for gifts will be magically waiting under the tree. But then eleven-year-old Millie overhears her parents: the family can’t afford gifts for all the little ones. She pictures the disappointment on her siblings’ faces: nothing to open on Christmas morning. Is Millie willing to sacrifice her own whole-soul wish so that someone else’s can come true? Full of tender emotion and delightful surprise, this story reminds us of the miracles that unfold when we think of others before ourselves.

Review

This movie reminds me a little bit of the story of the Magi, where the husband and wife sacrifice something for the other to give them a gift at Christmas.  In this movie, it is two sisters that selflessly give their wish for the Christmas Apron for the other.

This movie is set during the war so many do without or with very little.  The story is uplifting, heartwarming, and perfect for the holidays and what we should be teaching our children and those around us – the reason for the season.  I even found myself misty at the end when the family comes together Christmas morning.

We give this 5 paws up

About the Movie

Today was supposed to be one of the best days ever for nine-year-old Izzy Rush. But now, on the last day of class before Christmas break, she has been left alone at school. To make matters worse, the biggest blizzard this town has ever seen is blowing and snowing full force. Which is why three bumbling crooks on the lam decide to take shelter in the seemingly empty school. When Izzy discovers that the criminals are holding her friend Ray, the school custodian, she decides it’s up to her to save the day. But what can a nine-year-old girl do? You’d be surprised!

Review

If you are a fan of the Home Alone movies, then Christmas Break-In is a movie you won’t want to miss.  This story finds Izzy forgotten at school on the last day before Christmas Break but she manages to amuse herself while waiting for her parents.  Some thieves break into the school to wait out a blizzard and this is where the hijinks begin.

Izzy is very precocious for 9 years old and she is also obsessed with playing the guitar and has been saving up her money for a Fender guitar.  The day that this all happens, one of her parents is supposed to take her to the store to buy the guitar since it is a one day sale (hence the photo below with Fender Guitar on her parent’s foreheads).  She has a big brother that can be a pain, but he loves his sister all the same and even seeks out to find and help her once he learns she was left at the school by herself.

The movie has many laugh out loud moments and even some very touching parts that make it a winner in my book.  A great movie for the holidays.

We give it 5 paws up.

Review

I have to state this right off the bat – this is the 3rd book in a series, if you have not read the first two books, do not pick this one up until you do.  Or you will be like me and thoroughly confused because you didn’t know it was part of a series and the beginning of the book makes absolutely no sense!  Ok, so once I realized I was jumping midway into a series I changed how I looked at the content of the book as I was reading.

I have always enjoyed time travel novels and this one was even more interesting due to the time periods that it covers.  The story jumps from the 1300s to the present.  I think the first two books would give the reader a better grasp on what is happening in this book and how Shawn and Niall jumped about 700 years.  Amy is on a mission to find signs of Niall (who really belongs in the 1300s) by marks he might have left at various sites.  Shawn is from the present and is in the 1300s with Niall and coincidently they are mistaken for each other all the time.  Twins separated by centuries!  Amy is pregnant and I’m sure she is doing a lot of the searching so she can tell her child about its father.  However, there is another man in the picture, Angus, a Scottish Police Detective.

I loved reading the Scottish history and the details. I have never been to Scotland, and while I hope to perhaps visit one day, the descriptions of the various sites held me captive and I was able to imagine each historic site.

The characters are a mixed bag as I mentioned above – Shawn is arrogant, Niall is loyal (perhaps overly so), Amy can be wishy-washy, and Angus just wants to do whatever he can to make Amy’s life better, and to be a part of her life.  But all the personalities round out the book and make even the unlikeable character tolerable.

Overall I enjoyed the book but the only thing that bugged me is that when the story would flip to the present it would sometimes be italicized (which makes sense when Amy is thinking to herself) but other times not.  There was no consistency to the formatting.  And of course, the way the book started, I was very lost and had no idea what was going on in the story.  As I mentioned above, if you read the first two books and then this book, you probably won’t be lost like me.

Overall we give it 3 1/2 paws up.

Interview with Lauren Carr

Please share with us a favorite memory?

Bedtime with Mom listening to her read Perry Mason to me. That was when I fell in love with mysteries. Later on, I would climb into bed with her at night and we would read together: She would read Perry Mason while I read Nancy Drew or the Hardy Boys. Ah, such wonderful memories.

Please describe a perfect meal – including menu and those present?

Lobster or crab legs, baked potato, Caesar salad, chocolate mousse pie, raspberry iced tea

What are some of your favorite ways to relax?

Fire in the fireplace on a snowy afternoon with my laptop and a free afternoon to write away with no one to disturb me.

If you could live anywhere in the world, where would it be and why?

Right here. We have a beautiful home on a mountaintop with a view across the valley. Yet, I have to admit that I sometimes yearn for the “other side” and a visit to the beach: but only to visit.

For what would you like to be remembered?

For making everyone around me smile.

Share with us a few of your dreams. Also whether they have been fulfilled or are still a work in progress.

I’ve dreamed of success, best-selling author, Fame, penthouse, etc. but I have come to realize that I have been blessed by achieving my dream: I am a writer, and I get to write my books, plus, I have the added blessing of a fabulous family (perfect husband and brilliant son, and two nutty dogs) and beautiful home. If I had to trade any of them in for a spot on the NY Time best seller list, I’d turn them down.

If you could leave the world with one piece of advice, what would it be?

The Rolling Stone’s song: You don’t always get what you want, but sometimes you get what you need.

What are some of your guilty pleasures?

A whole bag of chocolate truffles that I hide in my underwear drawer under my panties.

What is next for you?

On October 16, the thirteenth installment of the Mac Faraday Mysteries, Crimes Past will be released. It is available for preorder now.

It’s a bittersweet reunion for Mac Faraday when members of his former homicide squad arrive at the Spencer Inn. While it is sweet to attend the wedding of a late colleague’s daughter, it is a bitter reminder that the mother of the bride had been a victim of a double homicide.

The brutal slaying weighing heavy on his mind, Mac is anxious to explore every avenue for a break in the cold case—even a suggestion from disgraced former detective Louis Gannon that one of their former friends is the killer.

When the investigator is brutally slain, Mac Faraday rips open the cold case with a ruthless determination to reveal which of his friends is a cold-blooded murderer.

But wait! There’s more! I am currently working on the fourth Lovers in Crime Mystery, The Root of Murder. Look for this to be released in early 2019.

Book Title: Held Together: A True Story of Love’s Victory by Jenny Q
Category: Adult Non-Fiction; 456 pages
Genre: Memoir
Publisher: BookBaby
Release date: June 1, 2018
Content Rating: PG-13 + M (Graphic medical procedures, some bad language)

Synopsis

In January of 2014, Joshua Tree’s beloved village herbalist, Jenny Q. suddenly became seriously ill and rapidly descended into a coma with slender chance of survival. The shock of this news initiated an overwhelming outpouring of love, wit, service, practical magic and sharing of spiritual wisdom between those in her intimate desert community. Indeed it seemed that the entire group became one in their desperate effort and race against the clock to save her life.

While the words of others in the community tell the story in this book, it is Jenny’s own insightful writings that provide a fascinating window into a range of rare experiences. She gives us a unique glimpse into the mysterious worlds encountered while in a coma, the absolute alteration of losing one’s legs, the subtle venom of PTSD, the nightmare of withdrawal from prescription opiates, and the maddening frustration of having to re-learn basic skills previously taken for granted such as the ability to walk.

Interview

Today we are blessed to have Jenny Q visiting and she shares some insight into the book and herself.

What is your next project?

I have been asked to write about my life on the road when I was in my twenties. I was following the Grateful Dead with a crew of close friends, who now lead creative and artistic lives.

I am gnawing on the idea of another collaborative memoir, gathering stories from those friends and weaving them together with my own writings, as I did with my first book, Held Together.

This book is about a health crisis that you endured. Did the writing of this book contribute to your healing?

I decided to gather submissions from community members and tell the story from many perspectives, as much for an experimental approach as for a tool to generate suspense. With each essay I received, I learned something new about my journey, as I was unconscious or in a dream state much of that time. Gathering those stories was cathartic and helped me piece back together bits of myself.

What were some of the personal obstacles you had to overcome in writing and releasing your memoir?

This book is about such a tumultuous time in my life, the greatest health crisis I have endured. I decided to make myself completely vulnerable. I am from a traditional Palestinian home, and being so totally open is not smiled upon in my culture. Many times, I wondered if I would have to courage to actually publish the book I was working so hard on.

Do you snack while writing?

As I am generally writing at 4:30 in the morning, I always have a mug of espresso in hand.

If I am writing late at night, I wouldn’t turn down a bowl of popcorn!

What do you hope the publishing and success of this book will bring?

Actually, I do have an agenda!

As an RN, I would like to speak to health care professionals about my experience to help with the development of sepsis protocols.

I would also love to visit new amputees, to help them overcome their fear and trauma. Post traumatic stress is terrifying for everyone in a family, and I would love to be a support. What gave me courage to expose so much of my vulnerabilities was my desire to reach out to others who have had trauma or have disabilities. It can feel so lonely.
