Review

This book was written by a South African author.

I’m not sure what category to put this book in. It is YA, there is romance, there is an exploration of new feelings (M/M), some adventure, and definitely some fantasy/sci-fi bits.

The story starts off with a young boy’s mother being killed and he goes to live with his aunt and uncle. He doesn’t understand that his mother is dead and runs out into the road and ends up being hit by a car and dying. Or does he?

The book fast forwards about 10 years and Zakhi is in his senior year and just wants to finish and leave. We are led to believe that he might be this young boy that possibly died all those years ago, but it is never really fully explained. Zakhi has a girlfriend, Zinzi, who happens to be the sister of Zakhi’s bully, Balz.

What follows is a journey between Zakhi and Balz and their feelings for each other. Balz is probably the most confused but Zakhi seems to take everything in stride.

Now the fantasy/sci-part has to do with two other characters that don’t seem to be of this world. Both are guys and one of them is pregnant, but they are there to make sure that Zakhi and Balz get together.

There is a twist near the end I didn’t expect but it made sense considering the above about characters possibly from another world.

This is definitely an interesting book, not one I would have picked up on my own. Because the author is from another country, I noticed some errors in grammar compared to what I would use in the US. The story can be confusing at times and I think if the author expanded the story it would help round out the characters and the storyline.

WHERE DO YOU GO TO GET INSPIRATION?

To get inspiration for my writing, I don’t have one single place I got to, but rather an action I do: run. I love running and I often have found that when my thoughts are jumbled or I need to sort anything out, embarking on a nice long run seems to be the solution.

Usually, my best ideas and plot lines come to me when I least expect them—sometimes even from a dream. However, in order to continue the thread that had started to unwind in my brain, I realize I need to unwind the whole piece of yarn. Therefore, lacing up my shoes and heading out for a run helps more than one can imagine. Even if the weather gets bad, I am fortunate enough to own a treadmill, so there really is no excuse.

The best part of the running? Other than sorting through my racing thoughts, I feel so invigorated and healthy afterwards. Not only is this good for overall health, but it enables me to have the energy to continue thinking through my new storyline.

And, with the extra energy and endorphins flowing, I don’t feel discouraged if I suddenly scrap the idea or head in a completely different direction. In fact, I highly recommend everyone gets out and goes for a run or walk, when they are stuck. Besides getting out of one’s own head, removing oneself from their surroundings and filling one’s lungs with fresh air, allows one to gain a whole new perspective.

More than one of my issues in plot or character has been solved by a good run, and with all the different paths to run outside, I feel I’ll never run out of inspiration.

While a fictional tale, this story takes a hard look into life for those living in Juarez, Mexico. It is not for the faint of heart and I found it heartbreaking to see young girls forced into prostitution to stay alive and make their way in the world not to mention the squalor that they experience on a daily basis.

Araceli’s story is similar to many in her town. She is a substitute mother for her younger siblings since their mother is not interested in their welfare, only her own. Thankfully, they have their Abuela to help fill the gap that their mother leaves behind. There is also a kind neighbor that owns the corner store that looks out for Araceli and her sisters. Araceli has dreams beyond ending up like her mother, married with many children and no future. It was hard to watch her struggle with life and not be able to see her dreams come to fruition, but she doesn’t give up on a better life.

I felt like Araceli never gave up hope on herself, her life, her family, and even those around her. This is evident with another girl, Rubi. Rubi’s life was even harder than Araceli’s growing up. I don’t think she attended school at all, was left outside when her mother was entertaining men, and I’m not sure if she was fed much. There are passages that mention Rubi at the age of 12 with heavy makeup and pregnant. I think she had three to four children before she was 18, possibly younger. Araceli tried to befriend Rubi but was rebuffed. Perhaps Rubi didn’t trust anyone and could only look out for herself. I think that one of the few people that were able to get through to her was Paul. Paul was a photographer with a church missionary group that was building homes for some families in Juarez. For some reason, he took Araceli and her family under his wing and even Rubi to the extent she allowed it. His kindness and generosity is overwhelming but is just a drop in the bucket considering all of those that need help.

I enjoyed this book on various levels. It taught me about the reality of this town in Mexico, and possibly others like it; the kindness of strangers especially Paul (Abuelo), and the photographs of the town and the joy in their faces despite everything. I hope that those that read this book take to heart the opportunities to help those less fortunate whether it is locally or in another country. This is the type of book that could open up discussions in the classroom or at home about the fate of the world and those around us.

We give this book 5 paws up.

Debjani Das AKA Debbie is a genius with a heart of gold.

That’s not such a great thing, according to her Spyder friends.

“Debbie’s revolutionary Bong blood could totally lead her to start a riot in the streets of Mumbai,” says Samira.

“And all because she doesn’t like the way some Aunty haggles over a pair of shoes,” explains Sweety.

“Oh yeah! She’s the type who will hack into a politician’s Cayman Islands bank account, and transfer all the money to her favourite NGO,” says Tina.

“And, she won’t see any irony in that,” says Sweety, with a grin.

“Guys, you do know she’s rigged an online poker game, right?”

Milli is worried that Debbie will piss off some online thug, who will then be baying for her blood. Which means that the Spyders will have to intervene before Col. Singh finds out.

“That girl is going to get me killed,” whimpers Ranga, the official chauffeur of the Spyders.

He’s a bit of a drama queen, but he’s not completely wrong.

Even with all the best intentions in the world, Debbie could get someone killed. If she’s ever allowed to do fieldwork, that is.

CHAPTER 3

BUBBA: THE PLACE IS BUSTED

We climbed the steps and stood at the opening. Guess what we saw? A pyramid with no point on top, like the one from my dream. It was in the middle of a grassy field, and it had lots of steps. And do you know what else? Behind the pyramid was a jungle. A real one with palm trees and tropical plants. You wouldn’t believe the noise! I needed earplugs for all those bird chirps and bug sounds. I took a deep breath, and it smelled like mud puddles.

“I think we’re in Mexico!”

Squirt shrugged. “Maybe. I know we’re not in Egypt. Egyptian pyramids don’t look like that. Plus, we’re in a jungle, not a desert.”

“Correctomundo, Captain Obvious. Come on. Let’s check it out!”

I took off lickety-split to the pyramid and climbed the steps. But when I got to step number thirty-two, I had to take a break. Sweat leaked out of my forehead and dripped into my eyes. Sitting down, I looked around.

I spotted another pyramid, but it was shorter than the one I was on, and it was covered with grass. Someone needed to get a lawnmower. A line of white steps went to the top.

I looked down. Squirt was at the bottom.

“Bubba, wait!” she said.

Asbury High and the Parcels of Poison: Asbury High YA Cozy Mystery
Young Adult Cozy Mystery
2nd in Series
Publisher: Purple Milk Publishing (May 24, 2020)
Paperback: 269 pages

Synopsis

Asbury’s fearless foursome is back!

Is their favorite hangout to blame for recent food poisonings? Or is there something more sinister at work?

After an unprecedented first year of high school, the gang is ready for a relaxing summer vacation, although in Asbury, that may be easier said than done. This summer, the Food Network is running a summer special highlighting local hot spots, Carly, Maddie, Pilot and Cornelious are psyched to have the world’s best restaurant featured—their very own Brady’s! In fact, Maddie can almost forget that her arch-nemesis, Alexis Johnson, will also be on TV for winning the logo design for Caulfield’s Candies… almost.

However, after patrons start falling ill, shoobies and locals alike point the finger at Brady’s and rumors of food poisoning. When Brady’s threatens to close its doors, Pilot realizes his mother’s job is in jeopardy, as well as his future in Asbury. With the aid of Cornelious’ wealthy cousin Dane, who spends every summer with the quartet, the gang is once again thrust into an investigation. Unfortunately, they find themselves thwarted by both the local police (who believe their recent success was due to luck, rather than skill), and Cornelious’ father, who has decided to run for Mayor of Asbury and cautions his son on the need to maintain a spotless public image.

With a new pancake house on the boardwalk, Mainlanders invading their beaches, and the Pitbulls sneaking around and terrorizing shoobies (as usual), there’s no shortage of suspects. But can they solve the case before the summer, and Brady’s, are finished?

Guest Post

Today we welcome Kelly and her thoughts on why she writes cozy mysteries.  Take it away Kelly!

One of my most favorite things to do has always been to figure things out. I guess that’s why I actually loved going to school. Thus, it makes sense that mysteries have always held a tight hold on my heart. Whether I am reading, writing, or watching the occasional movie, the genre is most often a mystery. Don’t worry—my husband would even agree, I am not one to ruin a good movie or book for anyone else by voicing my suspicions.

Thus, when I finally decided to write out the stories banging around inside my head, crafting a mystery series was the obvious choice. As I was only eighteen when I outlined the series and wrote the rough draft of Asbury High and the Thief’s Gamble (book one of the series), writing young adult came naturally. After a few years of research, and reading some pretty awesome cozy mysteries, I realized that the cozy mystery genre was the one for me. Not only did my series take place in a small town, with amateur sleuths as the protagonists, but I didn’t have any desire to add scenes of graphic violence or sex to any of the books in my series. Furthermore, the more I researched, the more I felt truly at home in this genre. I honestly feel some stories get lost in adding too much violence or graphic scenes, and the mystery or overall feel of the book gets lost. Thus, my Asbury High series fits perfectly into the cozy mystery world, and I am excited to continue writing in this genre for years to come.

Synopsis

Marcie is spending her summer working on the archeological dig that her mother runs: Angel Mounds, a site of an ancient indigenous civilization. Soon after she arrives, she meets some intriguing individuals, and becomes wrapped up in a supernaturally-charged mission to save the planet from the destruction man has brought upon itself.

Marcie Horton has a sixth sense. Not in the “I see dead people” way, but . . . well, maybe a little. She feels a sort of knowing about certain things that can’t be explained-an intuition that goes beyond the normal. Then there was that one summer four years ago, when she connected with a long-departed spirit . . . But nothing that incredible has happened to Marcie since.

This summer, Marcie is spending time working at Angel Mounds, the archeological dig her mother heads, along with her brother, Eric, and his girlfriend, Renee. The dig is the site of an ancient indigenous civilization, and things immediately shift into the paranormal when Marcie and her teammates meet Lorraine and Zeke. The two mysterious dig assistants reveal their abilities to access the Universal Energy Field with their minds-something Marcie knows only vaguely that her brother has also had experience with. Marcie learns how our planet will disintegrate if action is not taken, and she and her team must decide if they are brave enough to help Lorraine and Zeke in their plan to save Mother Earth, her resources, and her history. It looks like the summer just got a lot more interesting.

Review

This is the second book in this series but can be read on its own.  You get to know some of the characters in the first book, The Field, and there are a few references to what Eric was working on, but nothing that would hold you back.  I don’t remember much about Marcie from the first book but would assume she was introduced since she is Eric’s sister and that we learned something about her.

All that aside, this book was quite enjoyable. The pacing was just right, the characters were interesting, and if you care about the environment and our planet, you will enjoy the information provided about fracking and other ways the planet is being harmed.  If you enjoy sci-fi/fantasy/paranormal you will probably also enjoy this book for the concepts of a fifth dimension and extraterrestrials. Some of it was a little out there for me, but I still enjoyed the characters and beings that the author brought into this story. I do think that humans have the potential to do more with their mind but haven’t really delved into the topic. This book made me think about the possibilities that are out there.  If you are into conspiracy theories, there is that angle in this book as well.  This book really does have a little bit for everyone.

This story is also about self discovery and stepping outside of your comfort zone and trying something different. It is also about friendships and doing what is right for yourself and the world.

There are two quotes that really stood out to me regarding the environment and humans in general.  I feel these are really spot on.

“Earth and her human inhabitants are already going down the path of destruction, all due to the actions of humans.”

“Earth can only absorb so much abuse before cataclysmic results occur.”

I think I would suggest reading the first book, The Field, before reading this one. While you do not have to, I feel it would give you great insight into the book, the characters, and the aspects of what the mind can do at the right level.

We give this 4 paws up.

About the Author

Tracy wasn’t always a writer, but she was always a reader. Her favorite book growing up was A Wrinkle in Time by Madeleine L’Engle. In a weird way, her life reflects the book through odd synchronicities. She has a degree in Biology like Mrs. Murry and without realizing it she named her children Alex and Katie after Meg’s parents. (Really, it was not intentional, because that would be weird)!

Tracy uses her science background in her writing through her emphasis on environmental issues and metaphysics. Growing up, Tracy’s younger brothers called her ‘sarge’ and once when she took a personality test for a job, the evaluator said she could give a Drill Sargent a run for his money. If you need someone to boss you around, Tracy’s your gal! Tracy lives in Indianapolis.

Synopsis

What do you do when your mother feels that you don’t trust her?

If you’re Samira Joshi, and your mother is an elite spy who works for RAW, the first thing you do is … hide the knives.

After that, you go straight to the therapist that she has chosen.

For, when your mother knows seventeen different ways to kill a man, you don’t argue with her. Much.

Unless she’s trying to destroy your dreams.

Then, you fight dirty. Like a spy.

Samira is sweet, sassy, and almost seventeen. She dreams of becoming a badass spy like her parents.

And, why not?

That’s exactly what her parents have trained her to be.

So, why is her mother suddenly acting like a typical Indian mom and pushing her to be a doctor?

Samira can swear on her stack of covert operative manuals that it has something to with her mother’s last mission.

Her therapist disagrees. She feels the key to the mystery lies in Samira’s childhood.

Between her mother’s drama, a trouble-making grandmother, and a confused therapist, Samira’s life is spinning out of control.

What’s a good spy to do when her dreams are in danger?

Meet Samira Joshi

Samira is smart, sassy, and seventeen – with a difference.

While other teenagers dream of the latest trending hunk, Samira dreams of spies.

She wants to lead missions, run agents in the field, evade exploding napalm. In short, she wants to be a spy!

And why not? Spying runs in the Joshi genes.

If you look closely, her family tree is littered with all sort of spies.

Her great grandmother was the nosiest person in Ratnagiri – the village repository of gossip … er … information.

Her grandmother was the toast of the Hindu Colony Bhajan Mandal for her Miss Marple-like skills. She could solve any problem, whether it

was a missing servant, an errant husband, or a stolen diamond bangle.

And, her parents are elite intelligence agents for RAW … also known as … spies!

They trained Samira to be a spy. So, why did they suddenly change their mind? Why are they pushing her to be a doctor instead of a spy?

They’re up to something, and Samira wants to know what that is.

Like her father says, curiosity is her besetting sin.

But her mother doesn’t think so.

According to her, Sam’s main problem is the fact that trouble follows her like a drone to its homing beacon.

What does a good spy do when her dreams are in danger?

She fights dirty. Like a spy!
