Excerpt

I arrived at the courthouse about an hour early and made my way into a bustling courtroom. This wasn’t just any courtroom. It was the place where marriages go to die. I was prepared to come face to face with the man who would officially, and not a moment too soon, become my ex-husband. No fewer than a dozen embittered couples were waiting their turn to stand before a very impatient and unforgiving divorce court judge. He was running a no-nonsense operation. He expected 100 percent preparedness, and he was quick to send away anyone who was unorganized and those who dared to show up with missing paperwork. Fortunately, my lawyer had my documents ready to go, and when it was my turn, I confidently walked forward, never making eye contact with my
husband who stood with a smirk on his face. Though invisible, the tension in the air was heavy as we stood only a few feet apart. We were here merely for a signature to make our divorce final, not for confrontation but instead, for conclusion. The back and forth, contentious arguing and dividing of assets had taken place two weeks earlier in a mediation session, and today was the day to seal the deal and make this divorce official.

My ex, myself, and our lawyers would spend only about five strained minutes standing before this judge. The quick session would require elementary answers to just a few basic questions. I verified my name and stated how long I had been married. Yes, we have two children, neither of whom are minors. Yes, I consent to this divorce and yes, I am of sound mind and body. Then came a question, the final question, that halted me in my tracks. I had been schooled by my attorney a few days prior on all of these questions, so I was prepared for this humdinger. Still, it gave me pause.
