IT manager Mia Connors is up to her tortoiseshell glasses in technical drama when a glitch in the Horseshoe Falls email system disrupts security and sends errant messages to residents of the gated community. Eager to clear her name, Mia moves into action to locate her missing buddy and find out who killed their friend. But her quick tongue gets her into trouble with more than the new head of security. Review

Computer geeks, hunky security men and murder, who would have thought this would be a winning combination?!

I love that Mia was beautiful and smart but socially awkward. She decides to investigate the murder of her friend despite what the new head of security wants. It doesn’t hurt that he is easy on the eyes and flusters Mia throughout the book – hence the social awkwardness.

The killer isn’t obvious and I think I figured it out at the end right before this person was revealed. There are not a lot of people to suspect but there are a few good options thrown in to keep the reader from guessing too far in advance.

I did figure out a few of the clues that were given (looking for some information and where it might have been left) but it didn’t give me any more insight to guess the killer.

The author throws in some funny situations that had me laughing out loud. Always a good thing to include humor when possible!

I think this could be a winning series, although there are some things at the end that make me wonder how some characters will be included going forward.

I give this 5 paws up!

ONE

The moment I wake up, I know I’m in trouble. Nothing feels right. I’m nauseous. Everything is blurry. I try and focus my eyes so I can find my way out of here. I finally manage to make out an image. There is a massive lump beneath the covers beside me. It rises then falls in rhythm to a rumbling snore. This intensifies the loud thumping in my head. With a sinking heart, I realize that the man in bed with me is too large and unruly to be my boyfriend.

What have I done?

I become lightheaded with the thought of what must have happened. My stomach turns. I think I’m going to be sick. I take in a few short breaths. I can’t think straight. What happened to me? Where am I?

I must have had too much to drink last night because my memory is so fuzzy. I can’t seem to remember how I got here.

Kofi will never forgive me. I couldn’t ask him to. My eyes well up. My chest tightens while thinking about all the things I’m going to miss about him. The way he looks at me when I enter a room. His ambition. He inspires me to work harder and be a better person. He has this sarcastic sense of humor I often don’t understand, but he accompanies it with a laugh that’s quiet and contagious, like a yawn. I miss him already.

I need to get out of here. I want to get up but my head feels like it’s going to explode. Moving makes it pound harder. I have a charley horse in my neck. There’s shooting pain in my eye. This is the worst hangover ever.

I mine for deeper reserves of strength. I roll myself off the bed because my head is too heavy to lift. I hit the floor with a thud. Through scrunched up eyelids I look around for my belongings, but I can’t seem to find any of my things. Where is my bag, my shoes, my clothes?

A twinge of guilt trickles down my spine as I borrow a shapeless shirt and sweatpants from the floor. I pause for the poor girl who owns these garments. Not only did I sleep with her big fat man last night, but worse, her personal taste is appalling. She has enigmatic style and is awfully un-savvy.  Because her clothes identify her as a husky woman, I best move fast before she returns. I’m quite certain she can kick my skinny ass. Cardio Kickboxing keeps me perfectly toned, but I am afraid the heavily practiced punches, jabs and side-kicks have no street use.

When I look for the emergency exit, I can’t help but take in this distasteful environment. I’m surrounded by a terribly decorated room with cheap imitation Anne Geddes baby photos and mismatched furniture. I’ve seen garage sales with better interior design elements.

I creep to the door. I twist my ankle on an oversized Lego. I tumble to my knees then mime a silent scream. Now eye level to the carpet, I’m better able to survey the final course of my escape route. I stay low and slither across the floor, appreciating the breathable fabric and freedom of movement of the clothes on loan.

Once I make it past the threshold of the bedroom, I’m faced with a minefield of toys planted in the hallway, obstructing my passage to the outside world. I trip over a stuffed dinosaur. He squeaks and then there’s silence…the snoring has ceased. As this could further complicate my departure, I begin my high-speed pursuit towards the front door, forgoing all thought of injuries and hangover.

“Sarah?” says a recognizable voice.

I cock my ear at the door. “Kofi?”

“Where are you going, babe?”

I weave my way back through the house to my boyfriend.

“Where are we?” I breathe a heavy sigh when my eyes meet his.

Kofi has intense smoldering charcoal eyes and behind them there is a light that sparkles whenever he is excited. He’s got impeccable, lustrous ebony skin, full kissable lips, and high cheekbones—a fascinating combination resulting from his African American-Cherokee heritage. He is over six feet tall with slim hips and a v-shaped torso. He oozes with unadulterated maleness. But in spite of his appearance, he has this quiet confidence that’s devoid of arrogance. In fact, he is so smooth that the Isaac Hayes’ theme song for Shaft plays in my mind whenever I watch him from across a room.

My heart is dancing inside my chest. I’m relieved I haven’t ruined the opportunity to see where this relationship will go. I want to leap into bed with him, pin him down, and smother him with kisses, but I’m still feeling off balance. Instead, I rest my shoulder against the doorframe for support.

Kofi, moving sluggishly, sits up. I watch him closely. I notice I can’t hear the music playing in my head. Instead I hear my brain beating against my skull. My eyes are still trying to coordinate with each other. “Where are your braids?”

Kofi jerks his head up. “What do you mean?” he says, in a loud whisper.

Kofi once described his hair as an expression of originality, but it is now something approaching respectability and uniformity. “You look like a Marine and yesterday you looked like Lil Wayne.”

After a pause, he says, “Huh?”

“Why did you shave off the cornrows? A buzz makes you look…” fat, is what I want to say. Old, conservative, boring, also completes the sentence accurately. “Different. You look different,” I finally say, and then wince on his behalf.

Before Kofi can answer, the covers start rustling. Out pops a child rubbing his eyes.

“What is that?” I scream and point at the boy. “Why? Why?” is all I am able to say.

“He had a nightmare.” Kofi exaggerates a long drawn-out yawn and stretches out his lengthy arms.

“What do you mean?”

“Mama, what’s wrong?” says the boy in the bed, in a tiny, weary voice.

“Kid, I’m not your mom,” I say, followed by an uncomfortable chuckle. I share a look with Kofi and gesture towards the door. “I’m going home.”

“That’s a good joke, Sarah, but I don’t have time for it this morning.” Kofi digs into the corner of his eyes with his fingers. “I have to be at work. I’m in trouble enough as it is.”

The boy turns to Kofi and asks, “Daddy, why’s Mama acting weird?”

“Daddy? Daddy! You have a kid? Shit, Kofi, you never told me you have a kid.” I study the child closely; there’s no denying the resemblance. He’s all but a miniature clone of Kofi with lighter skin and one-third his stature. Both are sitting cross-legged, with heads tilted slightly to the left, the same single eyebrow raised, and now pouting petulantly.

I retreat into the hallway. I’m trying to answer all the questions running through my mind. Why wouldn’t Kofi tell me he had a kid? Why does this kid think I’m his mom? Why is Kofi looking at me as if I’m crazy? But my thoughts feel crippled.

“What’s shit?” the child asks.

“Oh sorry, kid, I mean…” I search for a more child-friendly vocabulary. I come up with nothing. I look at the boy blankly as he looks back with wide saucer eyes. The silence stretches too long. My nerves burst with nervous energy. “Shit,” I repeat—I can’t help myself.

Kofi’s expression is instantly angry. “Sarah, what the heck is wrong with you?” he grumbles.

“Me? What the heck is wrong with you? You just sprung on me that you have a kid. We’ve been together six months. You wait to tell me now?” The last thing I want to be is some poor confused kid’s stepmom. “I didn’t sign on for this! Where’s my stuff?” I stalk back and forth like a caged animal. “I want out of here.”

“Okay. Ha, ha, you’re funny. I never told you I have a kid.” Kofi and the child exchange puzzled looks.

“Let’s talk about this later. I can’t deal with it now. God, my head is killing me,” I tell him. “I have the worst hangover, and I think I’m going to throw up.”

“Hangover?” Kofi draws back sharply. “Babe.” He squints his eyes at me. “Maybe you should get back into bed?”

“With the young boy…that’s illegal,” I say, avoiding eye contact with the child. “Can you take me home?”

“Sarah,” Kofi says, in a slow, clear, soothing way; a tone I imagine a preschool teacher would use, or maybe a psychotherapist. “Are you okay?”

“What do you think? I just found out my boyfriend has a kid. I’m in some awful house and I have no idea where the Excedrin would be. I’m probably wearing your baby’s mama’s clothes.” I breathe in deeply. The smell is repugnant and the neurons in my brain seize.

Kofi gets out of the bed. He approaches me slowly. He’s wearing boxers and a T-shirt advertising Jones BBQ. I scrutinize his appearance for a moment and perceive a change, but my eyes feel like they’re burning behind my head. I squeeze them shut.

“Actually, don’t even bother getting up, Kofi. I’ll bus back to my apartment.”

Kofi walks toward me looking troubled. “Can you.” He nervously shifts his eyes and says, “Can you…can you…” Then he stops, looks at his son, raises his voice an octave. “Sweetness, why don’t you go use the potty and give us a minute.”

The boy jumps several times across the bed, as though on a trampoline, and then darts out of the room.

Kofi turns back to me. His stutter returns. He finally manages to spit out, “Can you tell me what you did yesterday?”

The only thing I know for sure is how brutal this headache is. I attempt to reconstruct the events of last night’s drunken debauchery. The memories are fragmented, like piecing together a dream the morning after. “I…um…oh yeah, I interviewed for that promotion I’ve been talking about for weeks, which went really well by the way. I’m pretty sure I got it.” I stop, concentrate harder. “Afterward, I must have met up with the girls for happy hour, like every other Friday for the past four years.”

Kofi’s mouth falls open.

I think back on the night, but nothing jumps out as odd: the drinks went down in the usual way. My girlfriends and I covered the typical topics: men, fashion, office gossip, and celebrity current events. When the spirits took us over, we took over the dance floor. I remember Jo-Jo dancing to a seven count rather than the conventional eight. Piper’s good judgment was lost somewhere between the funky chicken and the robot. Celia was jiving and using her hand as a microphone, lip-syncing with the house band. It appears in my recall, however, that I was an expert dancer.

I shrug my shoulders. “I must’ve blacked out after that because I don’t remember coming here.”

Kofi stares at me hard. “Are you serious?”

“Yelling isn’t helping, Kofi.”

“I’m not yelling,” Kofi says. He looks me firmly in the eyes. “I think we have a problem. Nico told me you fell when riding his skateboard yesterday. You hit your head, maybe you…” His voice trails off.

Instinctually, I put my hands up to my head. I pat around. I feel a bump the size of a golf ball beside my ear. When I touch it a blinding pain shoots through me and momentarily paralyzes my entire body. “Ow!” I cry out. Then a tingling takes over, similar to the sensation after hitting my funny bone, but it’s inside my skull.

Kofi rushes to my side. He guides me to the bed and lowers me down gingerly.

“Did you say Nico was riding a skateboard? You mean Grandpa? He just got a hip replacement. He can’t even bocce ball anymore.”

“You haven’t been to a happy hour in, well, forever.” Kofi speaks slowly and maybe even a little sadly. “Last night we watched The Hunger Games: Mockingjay on DVD. We were in bed by nine.”

“Wait a minute…this is a prank.” This must be another one of Kofi’s jokes, although I’m not really sure how it’s funny. “You totally had me going for a second. Bravo.” I applaud his originality, creating his own Hunger Games title, Mockingjay, that’s detailed. “Where’d you get the kid? He’s a good little actor. Did you rent him? Did you drug me to get me here? That’s a little bit excessive, but man, you really had me going there for a while. I almost believed you.”

I wait for him to break into laughter and say “Gotcha!” Instead he holds a poker face for an unbearably long time.

Review

What happens when you wake up and the last 5 years are missing? Sarah is about to find out! An accident on her son’s skateboard leaves her with amnesia and the last 5 years are gone from her memory and what she thinks her life should be like is not what is reality.

Sarah is definitely on a journey over the 2 month time period the book spans (approx.). Will she learn that the past is the past and not everything stays the same? Will she regain her memory? You’ll only find out if you read the book!

Sarah is a character that you will sympathize with, but also dislike at times. While it is a shock to realize that how life as you remember is nothing like reality, it doesn’t give a person the right to act like a spoiled child! But the flip side is that some of the traits she remembers having aren’t what she is life today (neat, clean) and perhaps that will translate to a change.

I could relate to the book in the fact that our lives change over time and friends come and go. I can’t imagine what I would think if I was in Sarah’s shoes.

I give this 4 paws up!

Trip of Gratitude:

DURING THE FIVE WEEKS of our trip we drove through fifteen states and had about 200 conversations with people from all walks of life. Everyone I spoke with had stories related to 9/11 to share and asked many questions. They loved our story, and they especially enjoyed hearing that whatever they sent to help (money, quilts, teddy bears, loving thoughts, cards, songs, poems, etc.) was deeply appreciated, and we knew it came from their hearts.

I find it sad that it takes a tragedy for citizens to pull together and show their true colors of heart-centered love. Towards the end of our trip, we stopped at a local roadside diner in Flagstaff, Arizona for dinner. The sun was just set- ting, and it cast a purple glow across the horizon. I had been driving for about eight or ten hours straight. The waitress came up to our table and poured us some water.

“You look tired. Traveling?”

“ Yes,” I sighed and looked up at her. She appeared to be in her early thirties, short and slightly overweight. She had black hair with flecks of gray and a kind face. I noticed that she looked tired too.

“Just you and your daughter?” She looked at us puzzled.

“Where are you headed?” “Not sure,” I said. “How can you go on a trip and not know where you are going?”

“Take a deep breath, pack the car and go forward,” I replied.

“That takes a lot of guts. I don’t think I could do that. Why are you doing this?”

I inhaled deeply. I was always nervous before I’d share what we were doing because I didn’t want to upset anyone.

“My daughter and I are on a Trip of Gratitude. I lost my husband and Michaela’s father on 9/11 in the terrorist attack, and because everyone shared from their hearts I fell in love with this country. I’m on this trip to give back by expressing my gratitude, and share stories. I’d like to hear your story. Do you have one?”

She became teary and had to pause for a minute. This part was always difficult for me. I felt responsible that I was upsetting her. My intention was not to hurt people, but to build them up, yet to enter the doorway to gratitude always seemed to require going through pain or sadness or some kind of emotion that didn’t feel good. In every conversation I’d had, this was the moment I would think of quitting, but I had learned to sit and be with them in their pain. I knew how important it was to tell the stories to someone who wanted to listen. I knew it would help free their bodies of the trauma of the experience. I waited for her to regain her words.

“I am so sorry,” she said. “Thank you.” “Yes, I have a story. I am so proud of my children. They were eight and ten, and when they saw what happened on TV, they began to cry for the children who had lost parents. We didn’t know anyone in the building or planes. They decided to raise money to help them, so they created a lemonade stand for 9/11 families and within two weeks they had made over $700. It was the best they ever did with a lemonade stand! I was so proud of them. They donated it all to the Red Cross. That experience changed their lives. It was the first time that they became aware that there is a bigger world beyond their lives in Flagstaff, and that they could make a difference, even if it’s a small one.”

“I want you and your children to know that what you all did made a huge difference in our lives, and for that we are grateful.”

“We really did?” Her face lit up. “No one has ever told us that.”

“Well, now I’m here telling you. We are so grateful for you.”

We hugged, and then she hugged Michaela. I asked her to give her children a hug from us too.

As we drove away from the diner, I left with a clearer sense than ever before that we all are connected and we are all one. That love is the most powerful force in the universe, and it exists everywhere. After 9/11, help showed up in all different forms of aid and assistance, but it was the love behind the support that affected me. We never can know the full impact of each thought and every act; nor can we know the reason behind every tragedy, but it’s there, and it’s real. Out of this heinous act, these children discovered they could turn their empathy into love in action, and they made a difference in my life and the lives of thousands of others.

Synopsis

Orphan Audrey Thorndale longs for the peaceful life of a convent, but with a younger brother to care for and England’s religious houses falling one by one to Henry VIII’s Reformation, she’ll have to find another way to serve God and country. The Abbot of Glastonbury, aware of Audrey’s dilemma and loathe to see the great treasures of his abbey looted and destroyed, suggests a plan that could save Audrey, the relics, and even the future of Britain…but if she agrees to it, she’ll have to commit treason.

Second son and sometime adventurer, Tobias Seybourne has never left an opportunity unexplored. He’s won the favor of the king, and is aiming for knighthood, when Abbot Whiting offers him the chance of a lifetime—partner with Audrey, and protect England’s greatest legend. Most importantly? Do it without ever giving the king a reason to suspect more devious purposes simmer beneath Tobias’s charming façade.

With help from the abbot, Audrey and Tobias set in motion a plan to ensure that when the abbey walls crumble, one particular treasure will be safely hidden elsewhere.

But as the abbot points out, the king’s minions keep close account of their plunder, and the contents of Glastonbury’s repository are well documented.

With the king’s men bearing down fast, someone must take the fall…

Excerpt

“You are worried that Glastonbury is in peril, and the treasures it holds will end up in the king’s coffers.”

“Yes—and no.” He eyes me. “It’s more complicated than that. You must not repeat anything you are hearing right now.”

“No, Father Abbot. Never.” If there is one thing I am, it is loyal.

“When I combine what I know—what I, myself have seen and heard—with what the monks who have already lost their homes tell me, I see a future in which certain relics of Glastonbury never make it to the king’s coffers, but are destroyed instead.” He shakes his head sadly. “The idea that the holy relics would go into the king’s hands was disturbing enough, but to destroy them? Sacrilege.

“Again, I must emphasize the importance of not repeating this conversation—to anyone. Not even Sam. The Treason Act is too loosely interpreted these days to take chances.”

I gulp, cursing myself for giving in to curiosity. Now it is my hands that tremble. I should tell him to stop, that I don’t want to hear any more, but my tongue is stuck to the roof of my mouth. I should never have asked what was troubling him. And yet, I have the sense we have set on an irrevocable course, and I must see it through.

Finally, I pry my tongue loose. “I appreciate your honesty, Father Abbot.”

“Should Glastonbury fall, the treasures that can be measured in gold and silver will most certainly find a new home—whether it be the royal treasury or a pilferer’s stash. It is the others that trouble me.”

He rubs his temples, as though even thinking hurts. I begin moving about the room again, straightening things, dusting surfaces…the little, normal, everyday movements that I know, somehow, provide the backdrop of comfort that Abbot Whiting needs right now.

“You remember those visitors from Walsingham? They informed me that the shrine there, the shrine to the Virgin, which the king himself has visited, has been destroyed. The statue of the Virgin removed, the shrine itself despoiled, and the buildings looted. The same happened at Roche Abbey this summer.”

Finally, it sinks in, and I know exactly which of Glastonbury’s relics—one with no value in gold, but still of immeasurable worth—is troubling him so.

I stop dusting. My tongue, now loosened, does not have the sense to stop.

“If Glastonbury falls, what will become of King Arthur?”

About the Author

allegra author photoAllegra Gray grew up with her nose in a book and her head in the clouds—that is, when she wasn’t focused on more practical things like, say, learning calculus. Perhaps all those stories inspired a spirit of adventure, because at the age of seventeen she embarked on a career journey that has (so far) included serving as an officer in the U.S. Air Force, grad school at Virginia Tech, teaching English, and managing defense contracts in the Middle East. The best thing about this breadth of experience? When she tried her hand at writing novels like the ones she’d always loved, she recognized at once that she’d found a true passion. Her forthcoming series, The Relic Guardians, is genre-bending mainstream/historical suspense, inspired by her long-held desire to unveil things obscured by the mists of time. Allegra is also the author of four historical romances, including the “Daring Damsels” trilogy of Nothing But Scandal, Nothing But Deception, and Nothing But Trouble.

Review

I think this is going to be an interesting series! It is more on the fantasy side with witches, werewolves, shape shifters and the like.

Aine is a banshee that has come to the Purple Door Detective Agency searching for the O’Neill she is supposed to haunt. “Mr Bad” (who no one really knows his identity) wants her to work there with Sunshine and they trick her into staying there and help solve crimes and they will help her find O’Neill. Aine finds her O’Neill fairly quickly after agreeing to work there but there is a problem, he doesn’t know who she is or what her purpose is…after all he is a mortal.

There were a few things that didn’t quite gel in my head – once Aine finds O’Neill and is trying to explain to him what her role is, he seems to accept it all too quickly, and in fact embraces her and her role in his life.

Discovering who murders the shape shifters, werewolves and tattoo artists was a bit of twist. It tied to events that weren’t really being investigated.

Laguna Nights 2

Title: Laguna Nights
Author: Kaira Rouda
Publisher: Real You Publishing Group
Pages: 250
Genre: Contemporary Romance
Format: Paperback/Kindle/Nook

Madison Alcott was back in her hometown, caring for her sick mom and working long hours at the best resort in Laguna Beach. She never imagined she’d return to the place where she became famous on the hit reality TV show Laguna Nights, and the place where she was humiliated on national television. Fortunately, the past had stayed tucked away until her old high school boyfriend appeared in the lobby.

Josh Welsh was a superstar by age eighteen, the bad boy break-out star of Laguna Nights. Since then, his star had lost its shine and he barely was holding onto his Hollywood status. When he was asked to host a new reality travel show, he jumped at the chance. The only problem was the first episode was shooting in Laguna Beach. Of all the reasons Josh didn’t want to return home, he hadn’t even imagined the worst scenario: running into Madison “Holly” Alcott.

Josh’s connection to Madison was still as strong as her anger at his betrayal. When the new reality series forces them together, they must face Laguna Nights past and present, and navigate a journey where nothing is as it seems.

Excerpt

It was an early Friday afternoon in February and Madison Alcott stood on the balcony of the Mondrian Laguna Beach, a luxurious Craftsman-style hotel perched on an oceanfront bluff. She needed a moment of zen before her latest group arrived from LA and her favorite place to breathe was this balcony. Typically, the winter breeze would be chilly, but not this year with global climate change. She was comfortable outside in her simple black dress, no jacket needed.

Her long blonde hair blew softly in the ocean breeze as she looked out at the sparkling blue water stretching out to the horizon. Waves crashed on the shore, a sound she found soothing and had since she was a child. It was a constant, that swooshing water sound, more dependable than anything or anyone else she’d known. She closed her eyes and imagined herself lying on the warm sand, wearing her favorite red bikini, soaking up the sun, laughing with friends, maybe even holding hands with Dolby, lying side by side.

She opened her eyes and looked down. Directly below her, a young family – two fit, gorgeous parents with two towheaded toddlers – frolicked in the resort’s signature mosaic swimming pool. The young father tossed one of the children up in the air, eliciting squeals of joy from the child, before he swam to his wife and pulled her to him for a kiss. Madison sighed.

“That should be me, us,” she said, her words drifting on the warm air of the empty patio, and checked her watch. The group check-in would begin in just twenty minutes and she needed to be sure everything was ready. All the she knew about the group was that they were a bunch of picky entertainment execs. The booking agent had been light on details about the group’s members, but heavy with expectations of service, food, and confidentiality.

“My group will expect complete privacy, the finest in service and flexibility,” the man had said to Madison over the telephone.

“Of course. Um, flexibility?” she had asked. She’d stopped taking notes as flexibility was typically not one of the demands.

“Sometimes, they change their minds. So, although we’ve set the agenda for the week, well, it is all subject to change,” he had said.

Madison had leaned back in her chair, inhaled a deep breath and had counted to ten. She was up to her eyeballs with entitlement, especially with Hollywood types. “I’m sorry, but we’ve scheduled the best table at our oceanfront restaurant just for your party. They cannot simply decide not to show up on Saturday night.” She had been proud of herself, being firm and she hadn’t let her voice waver.

“We’ll pay whatever. Just know, it may happen. See you on Friday,” he had said and hung up.

Flexibility, Madison thought, walking toward the front desk, crossing the thick carpet of the lobby before stepping onto the dark wood floor of the reception area. All three staff members smiled at her and she returned their grins.

“Can’t wait to see who’s in this group,” Chrissy said, eyes twinkling behind her wire-frame glasses. Chrissy had been with the resort for as long as anyone could remember and she still became star struck every time a celebrity checked in. Even if she didn’t recognize the person until Kevin, also a guest reception employee, showed her online. They still joked about her lack of rock star knowledge, missing the chance to ogle both Eric Clapton and Sam Smith within months of each other. She’d still proudly added them to her celebrity sightings list, Madison knew.

“We’re so ready to be flexible,” Kevin said, tugging at the lapel of his sport coat, his red hair glowing in the spotlight aimed at the seascape oil painting behind him but instead shining on his hair because of his 6’4” height. “I did a walk-through of all of the suites. They’re ready. Champagne on ice. Strawberries dipped in chocolate. Everything chilled and waiting. We’ll make them love us.”

Madison doubted that but smiled anyway. She loved her team. They were family to her, the reason she’d stayed on even though she should have moved on when the company had offered a promotion to a property in Sun Valley. Instead of manager of group sales, she would be a vice president of guest services. She’d told them she couldn’t leave Southern California – that it was home. But the truth was, it was the people here who worked at the resort that she couldn’t leave. And her mom, of course.

Her earpiece crackled to life and Madison cupped her hand over her ear. “Five minutes to arrival,” said the van driver who’d picked the group up at the private airport in Irvine.

“Got it,” Madison said, into the small mouthpiece. “Any insights?”

“Dickheads,” the van driver said as Madison’s heart fell. She’d suspected it would be a long weekend, but the confirmation saddened her. It wasn’t as if she had anything else to do, she reminded herself, pushing Dolby and his strong broad shoulders out of her mind. She knew he’d never be able to forget what he’d watched, no matter how many assurances she made, no matter how long ago it had happened. It was the same with her last attempt at a relationship, and the one before that. They would tell her it was fine, that they could handle it. But that was always a lie.

Review

Ever wonder what happened to reality stars years later? well this book gives you one possibility. a teenage reality show (apparently on MTV) set in Laguna Beach happened 15 years ago. Kids grow up and times change, but feelings don’t.

Madison (aka Holly) managed to put that time behind her and move on. That is until Josh shows up at her resort and those feelings come flooding back and what was or might have been. Josh is a washed up actor hoping to recapture one last pivotal role. What neither of them expect is their feelings for each other and who is lurking in the background.

This was an enjoyable book – I can feel the tension between Madison/Holly and Josh, but also felt empathy for what they had endured in the past and what was happening to them in the present. This book was also a great reminder about why I do not watch reality television – it can be scripted to an extent AND there is a lot of manipulation…which to mean means it is not reality television because it isn’t real.

Despite everything that happens the ending wraps everything up nicely and some get their just rewards (both good and bad!)

Review

This mystery/suspense book will lead you down many paths but they all end up in the same place.

Mira is an attorney helping out a partner’s relative from losing her house. Claire is that relative and she talks to her dead husband. Sean is a wild card and it is hard to know at first whose side he is on. Then there are your resident bad guys and an unknown in Quinn – who has his own story.

This book kept me hopping from one storyline to another, and while some intersected there was always a twist around the corner. The book is very fast paced (perhaps even too fast?) but kept my interest until the last page. While many of the bad guys are obvious, catching them in the act was hard to do for Mira and others.

Definite worth reading and we give it 4 paws up!

the visitor

The Visitor
By Brent Ayscough

Synopsis

Tasked by the Federation of Planets to determine if Earthlings present a threat as they venture into space, Tak, an alien anthropologist, leaves her starship orbiting Earth and takes a shuttle to Kansas. Intending to study humans in the United States—as she has learned no Earth language but English—she is detected while descending through the atmosphere and only evades capture by fleeing to Europe, where she lands in Poland. There, she meets an international arms merchant, Baron Von Limbach, who becomes her guide. She studies “typical” human behavior by accompanying the baron as he fulfills his latest assignment—to get the Dalai Lama back into Tibet. His method of halting the communist takeover of Tibet is to create a race-specific Ebola that will only attack Han Chinese, giving Tak a prime example of how barbaric humans can be. However, the CIA and US military are aware of Tak’s presence on Earth and are determined to capture her. And if she is unable to complete her mission and return to her starship—her captain will destroy every living thing on Earth.

Excerpt

CHAPTER 1

The shuttle doors of the starship opened, and a dark gray, twenty-five-foot-long shuttle exited. Tak looked at the glowing stars and then studied the blue planet ahead as she began her descent. Numbers appeared on the shuttle screen, notifying her of relevant information affecting her intended descent. She choose to descend without power, just gliding, so as not to so as not to draw attention from the planet’s defense systems.

In the quiet of space, she pondered whether she’d made the right decision in choosing the language called English. But one language was enough to learn for this mission–or was it? Some of the languages picked up by the starship seemed so difficult to learn. Transmissions were intercepted from major airport towers all over the planet, and they all spoke English. The place called Russia launched more satellites than any other country, but she had been unable to intercept any transmissions from countries where Russian was spoken, except for a few less-developed adjacent countries. A large number of countries spoke Spanish, but there was no detectable space activity from them.

The place called America seemed to be the best choice, given its satellite activity and advanced technology. Its language was also found to be spoken in a number of other countries around the planet, called England, Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, and much of India. And English had been made so much more pleasurable to learn, as she could watch the intercepted movies. The most interesting ones came from America and were in English. So right or wrong, English had been her choice. And she would land in the middle of that country, in a place called Kansas. This was her first assignment alone and she was determined to do her very best.

As she descended through the atmosphere, the outside temperature began to rise. The blackness of space was being replaced below by bluish stratosphere. Descending by gliding so as to create as little heat signature as possible, the shuttle passed through one hundred sixty thousand feet, downward, soon to be pushed in an easterly direction over the surface of the planet by the natural direction of the prevailing winds. All things seemed to be in order.

BONG! A loud warning sounded, and then she heard, “Radar is being received from the surface.”

She focused intently on her monitor.
