Synopsis

A thriller that depicts the resilience of a woman faced with devastating loss, the unexpected friendship forged from tragedy and the recurring societal themes that confront every generation.

Julianna Sandoval is living in limbo. Her husband’s plane has vanished over the Atlantic Ocean and although the Coast Guard has suspended the search, she clings to hope that he’ll still be found alive. Three months later, a young woman appears after hours at Julianna’s Ormond Beach restaurant, declaring, “He’s not who you think he is.” Before the stranger can say anything else, a gunshot through the window kills her instantly. Seasoned detective Paul Grant is assigned to investigate the girl’s murder. He senses that the shooting was not random but doesn’t know the connection to his only witness. Was the girl referring to Julianna’s presumed dead husband, her lazy stepson, her shady bar manager, or someone else? As Grant methodically gathers evidence and challenges alibies, Julianna’s faith in her friends and family is tested. The investigation leaves her wondering who she can trust and culminates with an eerie link to the past that no one sees coming.

Julianna | Monday, July 5

I poured myself a glass of red wine from an open bottle at the bar and pictured Michael sitting across from me. We were having a nightcap now that the diners had finished their desserts and coffee and were headed home, their tummies full of pasta with homemade Italian sauce. He raised his glass to make a toast—to having me all to himself for a few weeks. I was about to do something I considered reckless: abandoning the restaurant for two weeks to go on vacation in Italy. Before Michael, I’d never been out of the country, much less on a cross-Atlantic flight, but he’d planned our adventure to the last detail. We’d never really taken a honeymoon. I was too worried about leaving the restaurant unsupervised, but he’d finally convinced me to relax. Samantha and Alex could easily handle things while I was gone.

I guess it just wasn’t in my DNA to be so carefree, a work ethic I’d inherited from my father. Little by little Michael had shown me that it was okay to have fun. Taking time off for an overdue celebration of our marriage was part of enjoying life. He was a hopeless romantic.

I dabbed my eyes with a cocktail napkin. Now I was the romantic one, clinging to a distant memory. I was also feeling more hopeless—it had been ninety-five days since I’d last seen my husband.

I started to take a sip of wine when I heard a voice behind me.

“We need to talk,” she said.

I whipped around to see a woman leaning against the hostess stand at the front of my restaurant. We had closed over an hour ago. My bar manager and chef had just left for the night, leaving me alone to finish some paperwork. She seemed to have appeared out of nowhere.

Her voice sounded like a girl’s, but she looked more like a Real Housewife. She wore a tight navy dress with a scooped neckline that accentuated her rounded breasts. Gold bracelets adorned both wrists and her heels were so high that her feet arched unnaturally. Her bleached blonde hair was tousled about her face, and her skin was deeply tanned, the color that came from hours of soaking up the Florida sun.

“We’re closed,” I said, perplexed that this woman was somehow in my restaurant at nearly 1:00 a.m.

“You’re Julianna, right?” she asked. Her eyes squinted slightly.

Most of my customers, even the regulars, called me Miss Sandoval. I couldn’t put my finger on it, but there was something off-putting about the informal way she said my first name. Or maybe I was just irritable from a long night. Holidays were always busy, and that night’s Fourth of July dinner crowd had been no exception.

“Look, I’m sorry, but we’re closed,” I repeated. “You’ll need to come back during normal hours.”

For an instant, I thought about my pistol in the safe in the back office. It wasn’t that I felt in danger—she looked more like the type who’d be robbed than someone who’d do the robbing. Still, her presence was strange, especially on the one night when my stepson was out of town, leaving me to close the restaurant alone.

“He’s not who you think he is,” she said.

I shook my head, trying to make sense of her words. Was she drunk? High? And who was she talking about? It didn’t matter. She was keeping me from going home and I was already exhausted. I reached in my jacket pocket for the key to the front door and stepped from behind the expansive bar to escort her out. As I approached, I got a better look at her face. She was heavily made-up, with contoured cheekbones, lash extensions and plumped-up lips. I reiterated that we were closed and she needed to leave.

“You stupid bitch,” she sneered. “You don’t have a clue!”

I stopped in my tracks. My entire body stiffened. The hatred in her voice was personal, as if she knew me, which she didn’t. Before I could respond, I heard a blast outside. Glass shattered like someone had dropped a full tray of dishes onto the concrete floor.

Her eyes bulged and she gasped for air, opening and closing her mouth like a hooked fish. Her doll-like face was now oddly contorted. She stumbled forward a few steps, struggling to maintain her balance. When she tried to speak, blood spewed from her mouth.

I screamed.

She lurched forward, arms outstretched, and tried to grab me.

I instinctively stepped back and watched in horror as she clutched her chest and gasped for air.

Our eyes locked.

She stared at me, terrified. Her expression was the haunted, helpless look of someone who knew death was certain. Then she collapsed face-first to the floor.

I took another step back, turned and sprinted through the open archway toward the kitchen. I continued retreating down the hall to my office and slammed the door behind me. My heart was pounding in my ears. My fingers trembled as I struggled to twist the flimsy bar lock on the door knob.

Only then did I realize that I had no escape. My small office had no windows or other exits.

I frantically snatched the phone and dialed 9-1-1.

“Hurry, hurry, hurry,” I chanted into the receiver.

“9-1-1. What is your emergency?”

“A woman,” I panted. “A woman has been shot.”

I glanced at the space between my desk and the back wall and squeezed myself into the small opening. My desk was made of wood. It wouldn’t stop a bullet. Still, I felt safer crouched behind it.

“What is your address?” the dispatcher asked.

“Café Lily. 216 South Atlantic Avenue, Ormond Beach.”

“And your name?”

“Julianna Sandoval. Please, send the police right away!”

I listened for any sounds of movement in the hallway. Whoever shot her could be coming for me next. The restaurant was eerily quiet, but that didn’t mean I was alone.

“Help is on the way, Julianna. Just stay with me. Where are you?”

“In my office.” My voice cracked. I tried to swallow but my mouth was dry.

“Did you see who shot her?”

I blinked, trying to recall the scene I’d just witnessed. I’d heard the gunshot and the window shattering. Why hadn’t I looked in that direction? The entire time, I’d never taken my eyes off the woman. Why hadn’t I tried to identify the shooter?

“Ma’am, are you still there?” the dispatcher asked.

“I’m here,” I whispered.

I eyed the safe on the wall. I’d have to give up the cover of my desk to retrieve my pistol, but I had no choice. A flimsy lock wouldn’t hold up against someone determined to break down the door. I stood quickly and pressed the cold metal keypad—0216, my parents’ anniversary. Or was it 0212?

My mind went blank.

No, it was 0216.

With a single motion, I grabbed the gun and darted back to my hiding place. I squatted behind my desk with the phone pressed against my ear and my gun pointed toward the door. As much as I tried, I couldn’t catch my breath.

“You’re doing good, Julianna. The police are on their way.”

But what if help didn’t arrive in time?

About the Author

Liz Lazarus grew up in Valdosta, Georgia, known for its high school football and being the last watering hole on highway I-75 before entering Florida. She was editor of her high school newspaper and salutatorian of her class. Lazarus graduated from The Georgia Institute of Technology with an engineering degree and Northwestern’s Kellogg Graduate School of Management with an MBA. She went on to a successful career as an executive at General Electric’s Healthcare division. Later, she joined a leading consulting firm as a Managing Director and is currently head of Operations for a healthcare start-up. Interestingly, Lazarus initially ignored the calling to become a novelist—instead, she tackled other ambitions on her bucket list: living in Paris and learning to speak French, getting her pilot’s license, and producing a music CD. But, as she explains, her first book “wouldn’t leave me alone—it kept nudging me to write to the point that I could no longer ignore it.” Though her first novel, Free of Malice, released in the spring of 2016, is fiction, the attack on the main character is real, drawn from Lazarus’ own experience. It portrays the emotional realities of healing from a vicious, physical assault and tells the story of one woman’s obsession to force the legal system to acknowledge her right to self-defense. Reader response to Lazarus’ first novel was so encouraging that she embarked on a writing career, releasing her second novel in the spring of 2018. Plea for Justice is a thriller that depicts the journey of a paralegal investigating the case of her estranged friend’s incarceration. As she seeks the truth, loyalties are strained and relationships are tested leaving her to wonder if she is helping an innocent man or being played for a fool. Her third novel, Shades of Silence, released in 2021, showcases the resilience of a woman faced with devastating loss, the unexpected friendships forged from tragedy, and the recurring societal themes that confront every generation. Lazarus lives in Atlanta and is engaged to fiancé, Richard. When not working, she enjoys reading, traveling, and spoiling their cat, Buckwheat.

Synopsis

Based on true events, The Healing is the story of Cate Henderson who, after twenty-six years in an abusive relationship, sets out on a quest to find healing. Cate packs up everything she owns and leaves Calgary on an odyssey westward, to Vancouver Island, where her ever-present journal and the abundance of nature become the foundation of her self-recovery. She yearns for something deeper and then when she isn’t looking, she finds love with the solid and virtuous Ethan. Cate thinks his steadfast love is what she is searching for, but soon realizes she needs to do her own work, that love for herself is the key.

With echoes of Eat, Pray Love, The Healing is a raw and vulnerable exploration of human resilience. At times both painful and uplifting, it’s a story about love, examining motherhood, partnership, grief, expectation, and optimism, and the journey inward to self-love.

Review

This story follows Cate, a woman that has left an emotionally abusive relationship is starting fresh in another part of the country. She has support from her children and meets some wonderful people in her new adopted town including the man that shows her what life can really be like with the right person.

This was an interesting read for me. I felt for Cate but was happy to see her realize that a long unproductive relationship was not something she should stay in for her own mental health. In her quest to rediscover herself, she meets men that aren’t necessarily good for her until Ethan. He is a good guy but has some of his own baggage and it was refreshing to see them work through things together and learn more about themselves and each other.

Cate also shares her journal entries with us and her desire to heal and move forward. She makes many discoveries about herself which only benefits her in the end. I thought the interaction with her children and ex-husband was telling and gave us more insight into her thought process. I enjoyed watching her grow in her new relationship and feel more comfortable in her skin.

My only negative is that the writing felt stiff and I didn’t feel like the story flowed as smoothly as it could.

Overall, we give this book 3 1/2 paws up.

Excerpt

“Jack,” I whispered once he reached the front door. He paused with his hand on the doorknob as I took a few steps toward him until we were only inches apart. “Please don’t shut me out. I really enjoyed getting to know you again over this past month. Now that the circumstances have changed, I feel like maybe we’re headed back to being strangers again. I forgot how much I enjoyed your company, and I was hoping maybe we could have that again—a friendship, like when we first met.”

He removed his hand from the doorknob and placed it on my cheek. “That was a long time ago. Before life changed us into who we are now. I wish I could go back and be that goofy boy you first met. The one who made you happy. The one who made you laugh all the time, but I can’t. I’ll always be here for you, no matter what you need.” He closed his eyes and inhaled sharply. “But I don’t think I could honestly ever be just your friend again because I know I’ll always want so much more from us, something that we once had and still could’ve had.” He dropped his gaze to the ground and shook his head. “If things didn’t happen the way they did.”

I was speechless, not knowing how to reply or if I even should. The whole situation was so complicated and all the memories that had been conjured up from years ago were just adding to the mix. I always knew, even through the worst of times, that I still loved Jack. It wasn’t until recently that I was finally able to admit that I had never stopped being in love with him. That was my ten seconds—Do I tell him the truth and go down that rabbit hole with him once again, or do I let him walk away, parting civilly as two people who were mere acquaintances, sharing a mutual love in our daughter?

Ever since I can remember, I have always enjoyed Creative Writing. There was always something about being able to travel to a different place or become a different person with just the stroke of a pen – or in today’s world a touch of the keyboard. I love creating deep characters who you will love or love to hate. Writing is a form of therapy for me, and I’m happiest when a new story starts to take on a life of its own.

My life is not nearly as interesting as my books or the characters in them. I love spending time with my dogs: Bogie, a sweet old Border Collie and Georgie, a scrappy Chihuahua/German Shepherd (yes, you read that right). My happy place is a seat by the ocean with my feet in the sand or on the busy streets of New York City. You will more than likely find one of these places as the setting for most of my books.

Review

This book combined gorgeous photos, delicious recipes, and a look into Carrian’s family and life.

I have to agree wholeheartedly with her philosophy on getting everyone into the kitchen to help prepare the meal and to learn how to cook themselves. It is never too early for a child to learn how to cook even basic dishes and make them more challenging as they get older.

The book has an in-depth table of contents to covers nearly everything you might need to teach someone to do in the kitchen.

Table of Contents:

  • Pantry Staples
  • Essential Tools
  • How to create a shopping list
  • How to set a table
  • Tips on salt
  • Breads
  • Breakfast
  • Side Dishes
  • Knife Safety 101
  • Main Dishes
  • Cleaning tips
  • Desserts

While I haven’t made any of the recipes, there were many that caught my eye and I liked how each recipe gave the difficulty level so you know where to start with your child and what they can work up to as they master the basic skills.

Along with the recipes, she shares stories about her family and I felt like we got to know them all a little bit better.

If you are looking for a cookbook to use with your young children, definitely give this one a look.

We give it 5 paws up.

About the Author

Carrian Cheney blogs at “Oh, Sweet Basil” about her unique recipes and promotes her philosophy that spending time together in the kitchen is about more than eating a meal. She and her husband are parents to three children who learned very early that they all had roles in the kitchen and learning about food and meal prep was important to their family. While sometimes cooking with kids can be slower and certainly messier, the memories created and the skills learned will last a lifetime.

And Mrs. Cowper still has her eye on Julie’s dad – she is torn between wanting revenge and wanting to pick up the relationship where the two left off.

Review

This coming of age story is perfect for any teenage girl with the various topics it touches including bullying, monthly cycles, cancer, gossip, racism, gangs, love, and family.

Julie has a good life with parents that love her and is able to attend a private school for a better education. As with any school, there are always those that think they are better than others and treat others as if they do not matter. That is the case with Alexis and her posse but never count the good girl down!

There are multiple storylines woven together to create this enticing tale. I like how they all came together and how they affected Julie and her family in one way or another. Whether it was a situation from her father’s past, to her mother’s illness, to Julie learning how to cope with the stress of everything and come out a better person because of the situations she is exposed to and the people that surround her.

I have to say, I really liked Gloria, a fellow student at her private school and there on scholarship. She does not let her past define who she is and is not afraid to speak up for herself or her family and friends. The headmistress of the school may be a minor character, but she injects realism and integrity into the story.

The story does end with a bit of a surprise and there will be a second book coming soon. I can’t wait to see how the rest of the story continues.

We give this book 5 paws up.

About the Author

Betty P. Notzon, who is originally from New England and now lives in Texas, has been writing and reading all her life. She worked at Little, Brown & Company in Boston and at King Faisal Specialist Hospital in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, before moving to Houston and the M.D. Anderson Cancer Center. Not surprisingly, there is usually a medical thread in her plots. An avid reader with an early penchant for the works of Pearl Buck, Louisa May Alcott, Daphne DuMaurier, and Jane Austen, Notzon doesn’t pull punches in chronicling the raw realities of the 21st century, but she does so with old-fashioned restraint.

Excerpt

“Hello! I’m Jean Travis, assistant director of Public Affairs at the mayor’s office. I’d like to…to…” She fumbled and hesitated when she was distracted by another person making what could only be described as a perfectly timed grand entrance into the room.

Jean could detect a tall figure, a man, but couldn’t see much else. He managed to create a stir and a brief buzz of whispering, taking his seat. Jean tried to cover her lapse.

“So much excitement,” she said with a bright smile. “Thank you for being here tonight as we recognize the latest winners in our state lottery. And, of course, everyone wants to know—and see—who will walk away with the Mega Million prize that has grown over the past two drawings when there was no winning ticket.”

Jean then had a chance to catch her breath while she read an official statement from the State Lottery Commission about the rules governing the program. Her attention was briefly caught again by the latecomer, who, incredibly, appeared to be giving her a covert hand wave. She ignored it and continued.

“So let’s get to it! Like all of you, I’m excited to meet the lucky ones who will walk away with checks from the State Lottery, with numbers ending in a lot of zeros.”

A cheer went up through the room. One camera turned to capture the seated group demonstrating their enthusiasm.

Jean smiled, and then she suddenly gasped.

The list!

She had not yet even looked at the winning names on the list Brad had given her. As smoothly as possible, she pulled the list from the other announcements. She briefly glanced at the names. The last name grabbed her attention. She recognized it. But from where?

“And now, our winners!”

Jean called the first name, including where he was from and the amount of the winnings. Shouts and applause erupted from the audience as an elderly man and woman came forward, broad smiles and clasped hand-pumps denoting their victory. Jean kissed the cheeks of the woman and man to interject a little human connection. A giant cardboard sign was passed to her, a replica of a check with the amount the couple had won. Jean asked them a few questions about how they planned to use their winnings. The gushing, excited reactions from the couple evoked laughter and shout-outs around the room. Then they retook their seats to another round of applause.

And so it went, down the list of names for the next forty-five minutes. By the time she called the fourth winner, Jean had her comments to a science, and everything went smoothly. But there was a heightened energy and anticipation, as everyone clearly wanted to know who had won the Mega Millions. Who was going to be set for life? She looked at the name again, and recognition finally sunk in. Jean knew this name. An unexpected catch lodged in her chest. She had to quickly swallow to get her next breath.

“Will Trick… Will, er… Patrick Bennett, please come to the front to accept your check.”

She joined in the clapping for the winner, as she’d done for all the others. But this time she was more interested in who came forward. Out of the bright lights, a tall figure emerged. He was casually but smartly dressed in dark charcoal cargo pants, a black Henley, and a collarless, short black leather jacket. Great presence, Jean thought, keeping her attention on his approach, her smile fixed as her gaze widened with recognition. Jean reached out with her hand to touch his arm so that he’d face the camera in the right position. But he stunned her by taking hold of her hand and giving it a subtle squeeze…and not letting go. And he knew exactly how to position himself in front of a studio camera.

Jean made a discreet attempt to pull free, but Patrick Bennett wasn’t having it. She gave in and tried to relax. Catching her off guard even more, he brought their clasped hands to his mouth and planted a light kiss to the back of hers. The audience loved it, cheering and whistling. Jean played it through and gave a faux blushing gaze into the cameras.

“Many congratulations to…to Patrick Bennett,” she said with the right amount of enthusiasm and professionalism. “Mr. Bennett is the grand winner today of—are you ready?—seventy-five million dollars!”

There were whoops and gasps, and one audacious request from a female in the back of the room.

“I love you! Will you marry me? We’re already here at city hall!” The room erupted into wild laughter.

Do it, do it, do it…” went up the boisterous chorus.

Patrick Bennett, still holding Jean’s hand, raised both in a kind of victory wave. He grinned broadly but didn’t respond to the proposal. His free hand swept through his hair in a gesture that had Jean momentarily transfixed. Then she was able to extract her hand when she was handed the last cardboard check. Cameras flashed, dozens of cell phones were poised in the air, the glow of their blue-lit screens scattered throughout the audience.

Jean started the applause again, gazing openly at Patrick Bennett. It was an unavoidable sign of recognition between them. And then Patrick winked at her and murmured so that only she could hear, “Surprised?”

The quiet drawl of his voice made her stomach tense. That word, his tone, seemed much too intimate for the setting. She couldn’t think of a thing to say. She just kept clapping and smiling.

Jean was so glad when it was finally over. She made a few concluding remarks, thanking everyone for coming and congratulating the winners again. As people got up and began moving around, many, if not most, headed to surround Patrick. She was curious about the familiarity with which people approached and spoke to him, as if they knew him. She covertly watched Trick. Patrick. Jean had known him by the former moniker from the past. Trick. Jean gathered her things, absently chatting with some of the camera crew and making arrangements with the maintenance and security staff to have the room put back to rights.

She could just hear Patrick’s deep voice off to the side, the easy way he chatted with everyone, even posing for selfies, which completely mystified Jean. He didn’t know any of these people. What came across was a confidence and vibrancy to him, so unlike the other winners…just regular everyday folk who’d had a stroke of extraordinary luck. Perhaps this was one of the biggest, if not the biggest, moment of their lives. Patrick answered questions and accepted the good wishes of those around him with humility and a surprising grace, Jean considered. She kept stealing little glances at him, once catching Patrick doing the same to her. Her curiosity betrayed her once more.

Reporters continued to ask How do you feel winning so much money? questions, looking for cute, amusing, moving quotes for their profile pieces. She thought there might be an opportunity to use some footage for promo or marketing later on from her office.

The room finally began to empty out. She took a deep breath and approached the last few people, including Patrick. There was no way to leave without acknowledging him. Without remembering. Was he doing the same?

About the Author

Background

James is my given name, but most folks call me Jay. I live in New York City, grew up on Long Island, and graduated from Moravian College, an historic but small liberal arts school in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, with a degree in English literature and minors in Education, Business and Spanish. After college, I accepted a technical writing position for a telecommunications company during Y2K and spent the last ~20 years building a career in technology & business operations in the retail, sports, media, hospitality, and entertainment industries. Throughout those years, I wrote short stories, poems, and various beginnings to the “Great American Novel,” but I was so focused on my career that writing became a hobby. In 2016, I committed to focusing my energies toward reinvigorating a second career in reading, writing, and publishing.

Author

Writing has been a part of my life as much as my heart, mind, and body. At some points, it was just a few poems or short stories; at others, it was full length novels and stories. My current focus is family drama fiction, cozy mystery novels, and suspense thrillers. I conjure characters and plots that I feel must be unwound. I think of situations people find themselves in and feel compelled to tell the story. It’s usually a convoluted plot with many surprise twists and turns. I feel it necessary to take that ride all over the course. My character is easily pictured in my head. I know what he is going to encounter or what she will feel. But I need to use the right words to make it clear.

Reader & Reviewer

Reading has also never left my side. Whether it was children’s books, young adult novels, college textbooks, biographies, or my ultimate love, fiction, it’s ever present in my day. I read two books per week and I’m on a quest to update every book I’ve ever read on Goodreads, write up a review, and post it on all my sites and platforms.

Blogger & Thinker

I have combined my passions into a single platform where I share reviews, write a blog and publish tons of content: TRUTH. I started my 365 Daily Challenge, where I post about a word that has some meaning to me and converse with everyone about life. There is humor, tears, love, friendship, advice, and bloopers. Lots of bloopers where I poke fun at myself all the time. Even my dogs have had weekly segments called “Ryder’s Rants” or “Baxter’s Barks,” where they complain about me. All these things make up who I am; none of them are very fancy or magnanimous, but they are real. And that’s why they are me.

Genealogist & Researcher

I love history and research, finding myself often reaching back into the past to understand why someone made the choice he or she did and what were the subsequent consequences. I enjoy studying the activities and culture from hundreds of years ago to trace the roots and find the puzzle of my own history. I wish I could watch my ancestors from a secret place to learn how they interacted with others, and maybe I’ll comprehend why I do things the way I do.

Knitted and Knifed: A Humorous & Heartwarming Cozy Mystery (A Knitty Kitties Mystery)
Cozy Mystery
1st in Series
Publisher: Independently published (January 5, 2021)
Paperback: 224 pages

Synopsis

Wanted: Cat mum to manage a yarn store, corral two curious cats, all the while being tangled up in murderous mayhem and mystery.

A smart woman would dump her cheating ex, move from the city, and give herself a chance for a well-deserved do-over. A smarter woman—smarter than me, anyway—wouldn’t jump out of that same frying pan and return to Cape Discovery, a seaside village where her family is the nuttiest of all the nut-ball residents.

I’m a former high school counselor, middle-child peacemaker, and current curator of lots of squishy/fuzzy goodness at my granddad’s little yarn store. Temporary assistant. Until I decide what to do with the rest my life. There’s only one knotty problem to untangle first. The knife sticking out of the most unpopular man in town, and the police detective trying to pin the murder on the donkey—otherwise known as my younger brother. With a pair mischievous cats determined to be underfoot and a craft group of Serial Knitters and Happy Hookers wanting the inside scoop, a girl could lose her mind. And if the killer has their way, maybe even my life…

Tessa Wakefield has her hands full juggling a cozy craft store, her crazy family, and two men who’d rather poke out their eyes than describe themselves as cute. Which they totally are. Cute, charismatic, and occasionally on her mind when she’s not stumbling over dead bodies and using her newfound sleuthing skills to track down murderers. Lucky she’s an excellent multi-tasker because digging beneath Cape Discovery’s surface can unearth secrets that kill.

Synopsis

Single Mom barely holding onto her sanity vs. Silver Fox convinced he’s found love. Let the games begin…

My boss looks at me like I’m a lollipop he can’t wait to lick. He can keep waiting. I haven’t got time to wash my hair, let alone take care of a man. Another man I should say. Being a single mom to a teenage boy on a crusade to save the world is a full-time job. Add my actual full-time job times two and I’ve forgotten the definition of free time.

But Max isn’t taking no for an answer. He says he’s waited long enough to find love. And he’s done waiting. Gulp. He claims he’s going to solve all problems and prove he’s the man for me. Trouble – party of one.

But maybe like Max always says Love will OUT.

We’ll see about that.

This single mom romantic comedy features a single mom trying to protect her crusader son from the consequences of his actions, a silver fox convinced it’s his turn for love, a daughter and her friends who aren’t above playing matchmaker, and a makeshift family of former Army buddies who think telling dirty jokes is a sign of love.

A Fox for Faith is book 4 of the Love will OUT series but can be read as a standalone.

Review

Another great romantic comedy by this author!  This series is a hoot and in the end, it is like joining the family for the holidays with how much they care for each other and look out for one another.

This is the fourth in this series and I think what I like the best about it is that the main characters are closer to my age. I don’t mind reading about younger characters, but there is something when it is someone around your age and has gone through what you have gone through or can at least relate to your life. Faith is running from a problem in St Louis but that doesn’t stop Max and the others from bringing her into their circle and watching out for her and her son. The attraction between Max and Faith is hot…like spicy hot. Despite Faith’s efforts to stay away, that isn’t going to happen.

The wit and humor peppered throughout kept me laughing. While you don’t need to read the previous three books to read this one, it really helps to understand the relationship between all of their characters. I definitely enjoyed the continuation of Hailey, Suzie, and Phoebe’s stories with tidbits here and there. And of course, the Uncles. They may not be blood but they will protect their family to the death. I found it humorous that Max told them they needed to stop with the dirty jokes around Faith.  She is definitely a mom that has it all together and can give them the “mom look” and put these men in their place. Go Faith!

This is a fantastic series and you won’t be sorry if you pick it up to read. It is a blend of the right amount of humor, romance, and some spicy love scenes.

We have to give it 5 paws up and think there might be a 5th book based on the introduction of a new character, Chrissie.  I think Wally may have met his match.

About the Author

I grew up reading everything I could get my grubby hands on, from my mom’s Harlequin romances to Nancy Drew, to Little Women. When I wasn’t flipping pages in a library book, I was penning horrendous poems, writing songs no one should ever sing, or drafting stories which have thankfully been destroyed. College and a stint in the U.S. Army came along, robbing me of free time to write and read, although on the odd occasion I did manage to sneak a book into my rucksack between rolled up socks, MRIs, t-shirts, and cold weather gear. After surviving the army experience, I went back to school and got my law degree. I jumped ship and joined the hubby in the Netherlands before the graduation ceremony could even begin. A few years into my legal career, I was exhausted, fed up, and just plain done. I quit my job and sat down to write a manuscript, which I promptly hid in the attic before returning to the law. But practicing law really wasn’t my thing, so I quit (again!) and went off to Germany to start a B&B. Turns out running a B&B wasn’t my thing either. I polished off that manuscript languishing in the attic before following the husband to Istanbul where I decided to give the whole writer-thing a go. But ten years was too many to stay away from my adopted home. I packed up again and moved to The Hague where, in between tennis matches and failing to save the world, I’m currently working on my next book. I hope I’ll always be working on my next book.

Review

This fast-paced thriller intrigued me, frightened me, and kept me on the edge of my seat. How would this virus affect the population and crops?

The crux of this story takes place over a few days but the whole book spans about two weeks from the initial chapter until the end. The story begins with Jake kidnapped leaving a diner and injected with a drug that made him susceptible to coercion but won’t remember anything that he said or did afterward. That is until weeks later when his project with a water plant starts to go awry. That is when everything starts unraveling.

While it isn’t necessary to read the first book by this author, Civil Terror: Gridlock, I think it would be very helpful. I will admit I was a bit confused at the beginning not understanding the relationship between Jake and Viktor and how their lives intersected and why there was such animosity between the two. However, I did finally put the pieces together, but had I read the first book I wouldn’t have felt discombobulated in the beginning.

The book does have some technical jargon peppered throughout, but I didn’t find it to be overwhelming or take away from the story. I enjoyed getting to know the characters and their relationships with one another. There are some surprising twists in the story, so don’t think you have it all figured out! We do know who is behind everything early in the book and there is a surprise near the end that has me intrigued and ready to read the next book to find the answer.

This book hits a range of emotions and is well done. Sure some of it may not be realistic, but that is the great thing about fiction, you can make anything possible and in the future, it just might become a reality.

We give this 4 paws up.
