Synopsis

The dark side of paradise is exposed when a terrified couple reveals their daunting experience on a remote island to their rescuers—only to realize they’re still in the grips of the island’s secrets—in this intense and startling debut in the tradition of Into the Jungle and The Ruins.

When a Navy vessel comes across a yacht in distress in the middle of the vast Indian Ocean, Captain Danial Tengku orders his ship to rush to its aid. On board the yacht is a British couple: a horribly injured man, Jake, and his traumatized wife, Virginie, who breathlessly confesses, “It’s all my fault. I killed them.”

Trembling with fear, she reveals their shocking story to Danial. Months earlier, the couple had spent all their savings on a yacht, full of excitement for exploring the high seas and exotic lands together. They start at the busy harbors of Malaysia and, through word of mouth, Jake and Virginie learn about a tiny, isolated island full of unspoiled beaches. When they arrive, they discover they are not the only visitors and quickly become entangled with a motley crew of ex-pat sailors. Soon, Jake and Virginie’s adventurous dream turns into a terrifying nightmare.

Now, it’s up to Danial to determine just how much truth there is in Virginie’s alarming tale. But when his crew makes a shocking discovery, he realizes that if he doesn’t act soon, they could all fall under the dark spell of the island.

Review

This was a different type of suspense novel for me, but it wasn’t extremely suspenseful except for some at the beginning and the end. A boat is discovered by a Naval unit and there is a lot of wondering about how these two ended up on the boat and how he was hurt. Lots of unanswered questions. The bulk of the book follows Jake and Virginie and their adventures with becoming world travelers on a boat and roaming from port to port, at least that is their plan until they meet Terry and learn about Amarante. This tiny island is in the middle of nowhere and anyone that visits has to stock up on supplies, and if you need help there isn’t much around. Virginie persuades Jake that they travel there first and change their plans. What could possibly go wrong?

This book kept me engaged and I wondered about several of the characters and their motives in various situations. I have to be vague to keep you in suspense and not give away too much of the storyline. The fellow travelers that they meet at Amarante seem harmless, but are they? The story comes to a climax as it nears the time they need to leave because the monsoon season is about to start and we then fall back to the snippet at the beginning and the navy vessel finding them drifting miles away from anywhere.

The ending really picks up with the truth coming out about various characters and their motives. I have to admit that I was confused once we were back in the present in the book and the book switched POV. The author probably should have put Tengku’s name at the top of the chapter so we know that it switches to his POV. He turns out to have a pivotal role in the ending. The characters didn’t have a lot of depth to them but you get a sense of who they are and how that plays into their character. There are some obvious good and bad characters but the interaction between them all was intriguing.

Overall, we give this 4 paws up.

About the Author

Emma Bamford is an East Midlands-based author and journalist who has worked at The Independent and Daily Express and most recently as News Editor of the I newspaper.

She had a fairly normal life, to begin with, growing up with her younger brother and sister under the watchful eyes of her parents in Lincoln and Nottingham. After studying English Literature at Southampton University and Newspaper Journalism at UCLan, she started work as a cub reporter for the Bicester Review and then the Derby Evening Telegraph, cutting her journalistic teeth interviewing organizers of local fetes and grilling parish council members. Fleet Street beckoned and highlights of her career as a reporter and news editor include asking F1 driver Jenson Button what his favorite toasted sandwich filling was, quizzing the incumbent Home Secretary on his preferred kind of cheese (spot a pattern?), and peeing in Bruce Forsyth’s downstairs loo. There was some serious and hard-hitting journalism in there for a fair few years, too.

Then, in her early 30s and bored with this ‘fairly normal life’ she’d created for herself, Emma took a career break and, despite protestations from friends and family, answered an advert on the internet for ‘crew wanted’ and flew to Borneo to live on a boat with a man she had never met and his cat. She found herself hunting for elephants in the jungle, visiting deserted islands, and running from pirates. Finally, she ended up among billionaires, working as a stewardess on a superyacht in Italy. Her adventures form the basis of her first book, Casting Off.

Emma now works part-time as a freelance to give herself space to write and make the jump from memoirs to novels. Her ambition is to make book writing her full-time career. Tropical settings feature high in her inspiration and as her books’ settings, although she lives about as far away from the sea as it is possible, in landlocked rural Derbyshire. And, while she may make self-deprecating jokes constantly, she really is serious about figuring out what is important in life and finding the freedom to be who you want to be.

Why Do People Have Challenges in Health, Relationships, Finances, and Every Aspect of Life?

by Dr. & Master Zhi Gang Sha,

Author of Tao Calligraphy to Heal and Rejuvenate Your Back

Millions of people suffer from sickness in the physical body, including all kinds of pain, inflammation, cysts, tumors, cancer, COVID-19, and many other sicknesses.

Millions of people suffer from sickness in the emotional body, including anger, depression, anxiety, worry, grief, fear, guilt, shame, loneliness, and more.

Millions of people suffer from sickness in the mental body, including poor concentration, diminishing memory, negative thinking, judgment, ego, and many mental disorders, such as schizophrenia, OCD, PTSD, and more.

Millions of people suffer from sickness in the spiritual body, because the soul can carry negative information. In fact, as we have seen in the Universal Law of Shen Qi Jing, negative information is the root cause of all kinds of sickness in the physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual bodies.

Millions of people have relationship challenges, including with partners, parents, children, siblings, other relatives, friends, bosses, employees, colleagues, organizations, and more.

Organizations, belief systems, cities, countries, and more could also have relationship challenges with each other.

Millions of people have environmental challenges, including polluted air, water, or land, inadequate shelter, unhealthy food, lack of healthcare, and more.

Millions of people have financial challenges.

Why do we have so many challenges in every aspect of life?

What is the key to understanding all of these challenges?

Is there a solution for these challenges?

If so, what is the solution?

I wrote this book to answer these four questions. Above all, I wrote this book to serve you, humanity, and Mother Earth.

In one sentence:

Humanity has all kinds of challenges in health, relationships, finances, the spiritual journey, and every aspect of life because of negative information, energy, and matter (negative shen qi jing).

What is the key to understanding all of these challenges? In one sentence, the key is that the heart and the soul are affected and influenced by negative information, energy, and matter.

Is there a solution for these challenges? In one sentence, the solution to all challenges in health, relationships, finances, the spiritual journey, and every aspect of life is to apply positive information, energy, and matter (positive shen qi ing) to transform negative information, energy, and matter.

Positive Information, Energy, and Matter

Tao Science states that information, energy, and matter can be positive or negative. This revolutionary insight helps us deeply understand sickness, healing, and transformation. What are positive information, energy, and matter? Positive information, energy, and matter are any information, energy, or matter that promotes order, connection, and harmony. Positive information, energy, and matter can heal and transform sickness, prevent sickness, rejuvenate, prolong life, harmonize relationships, boost finances and business, and enlighten one’s spiritual journey.

There are ten qualities that carry the most-positive information, energy, and matter: greatest love, greatest forgiveness, greatest compassion, greatest light, greatest humility, greatest harmony, greatest flourishing, greatest gratitude, greatest service, and greatest enlightenment. I will explain these ten greatest qualities in more detail in chapter eight.

Because these ten greatest qualities are the most-positive information, energy, and matter, they can transform every aspect of life. They are the highest wisdom. At the same time, they are the highest practice. They carry the highest power.

In ancient wisdom, shu yi zai Dao 书以载道, which means calligraphy is used to carry Tao. In this book, I share two Tao Calligraphies I have written to carry some of the ten greatest qualities to serve you, as well as to serve families, humanity, organizations, cities, countries, and Mother Earth.

Tao Calligraphy is Tao Source Oneness writing. It is art. It is art beyond art that can heal and transform health, relationships, finances, the spiritual journey, and every aspect of life. I will teach you how to practice in the Tao Calligraphy Field to transform every aspect of life. The practices are simple but profound. Practice is vital for you to receive the greatest possible benefits that I wish you and every reader to receive.

In one sentence:

All good health, harmonious relationships, flourishing finances and business, and enlightened spiritual journeys are due to positive information, energy, and matter.

Negative Information, Energy, and Matter

What are negative information, energy, and matter? Negative information, energy, and matter are any information, energy, or matter that promotes disorder, disconnection, and disharmony. Negative information, energy, and matter cause sickness, relationship challenges, and financial challenges. Negative information, energy, and matter block one’s spiritual journey. Negative information, energy, and matter create blockages in every aspect of life.

A human being has physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual bodies.

In the physical body, any lack of energy, vitality, or stamina; any pain, inflammation, cysts, tumors, or cancer; and all other sicknesses are negative information, energy, and matter.

In the emotional body, anger, depression, anxiety, guilt, shame, worry, grief, fear, and more are negative information, energy, and matter.

In the mental body, confusion, mental disorders, poor concentration, poor memory, ego, and more are negative information, energy, and matter.

In the spiritual body, not understanding or realizing the importance of the soul journey, which is the spiritual journey, getting lost on one’s spiritual journey, creating mistakes of hurting and harming others and the environment, and more are negative information, energy, and matter.

For relationships, any disharmony in any kind of relationship is negative information, energy, and matter.

For finances, all blockages in any aspect of finances are negative information, energy, and matter.

For a business, any challenge in any part of the business is negative information, energy, and matter.

In one sentence:

All challenges, blockages, and failures in health, relationships, finances, and the spiritual journey are due to negative information, energy, and matter.

How to Transform Negative Information, Energy, and Matter

To transform all challenges in health, relationships, finances, the spiritual journey, and every aspect of life is to transform negative information, energy, and matter to positive information, energy, and matter.

I am delighted to offer a Tao Source practical tool to help you, families, society, organizations, humanity, and Mother Earth. This practical tool is named Tao Calligraphy.

Tao Calligraphy creates and carries an Ultimate Source most-positive field, which could transform negative fields in all life, including health, relationships, finances, and the spiritual journey. Health includes four bodies: physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual.

Synopsis

From New England’s Storyteller, Steven Manchester, comes the nostalgia-filled sequel to Bread Bags & Bullies; a novel about growing up in a whacky family during the 1980s. Boom boxes, leg warmers, and Rubik’s Cubes—it’s all there. A hysterical walk down memory lane!

It’s the summer of 1984, a season of dodging lawn darts and chugging lemonade—or at least the discolored tap water Ma tried to disguise as lemonade.

Growing up is never easy, no matter what era you do it in. For generations, teenagers have suffered peer pressure, bullying, fear of rejection, and a sadistic obstacle course of one unexpected challenge after the next. Three brothers, Wally, Herbie, and Cockroach, learn that the past can be filled with questions—even shame and regret—while the future might be shrouded in worry and fear. But staying in the moment, now that’s where the sweet spot is.

Review

This story took me back to my high school days and many times I found myself nodding and reminiscing about the music (which I still listen to), the stores, and just life in general in the 1980s.

I have not read the book that this is the sequel for, but I don’t think that is necessary. I enjoyed Walt, Herbie, and Alphonse (aka Cockroach) from their interactions with each other, their parents, and how they dealt with life in general. This is a good coming-of-age story as well as we see Herbie start to spread his wings more and Cockroach, well, he is a hot mess but a smart kid too. I had to laugh at how their mom kicked them out of the house and said to be back when the street lights come on. I think many can relate to this if they are like me. And the trip to the S&H Green Stamp store? What a flashback! I think my first iron was from this store.

Who remembers lawn darts? Those things could take an eye out or GI Joe might become a mangled mess once these boys get done with him.

This story is about love, memories, friendships, and family. The author is a masterful storyteller and you won’t be disappointed if you decide to pick up this book.

We give it 5 paws up.

Synopsis

Things are gonna get messy…

An illegal union, a banned birth, a Great Lie, and now, genocide. Vampire lawyer Donovan Trait and his wife, chemically-turned Judge Shirley Magnusen, are battling for their lives and the lives of their children. The Vampire Coalition wants them dead, but now the despots have also decided to expand their net, targeting any vampire whose blood is mixed with human or Were. Half-bloods are already treated like dirt by the Vampire Nation. They have been subjected to centuries of discrimination and cruelty at their hands. As the Coalition embarks on a campaign of terror, destruction, and slaughter, millions of half-bloods emerge from the shadows, ready and willing to reclaim their place in the Vampire Nation. The problem is, war cannot be unleashed out in the open in the human world, battles must be fought in other ways. Even with an island of highly-skilled vampire nuns and a few Weres and humans at their side, it appears the Traits may be fighting an unwinnable war. Their only option may be to sacrifice their own lives in the hopes of setting all other half-bloods free.

Donovan shifted on the lounger and muttered incomprehensively, then he emitted a rumbling snore.

“Hey, y’all. So yeah, vampires are real and they’re not above doing the dirty to those who share their blood. Take a look at this.” The Tik-Tokker grinned. “You are not gonna believe it. It’s so shady.”

Video of the Coalition camps rolled across the screen. Occasionally, the camera zeroed in a dirty or bruised Millennial, or a guard pushing a group of people into a building, their ankles locked together with some sort of rope. They were seen eating off of metal plates and lined up to fill a metal cup with something from a barrel. It wasn’t water. The liquid was rust-colored and thick, like blood.

“And the dudes running the place have a Marie Antoinette fetish. You know—” The woman mimicked a knife across her throat. “Off with their heads?” She giggled.

A guillotine appeared on camera. About ten people were in line, each with a black hood over their heads and their arms bound behind them. One at a time, they were pushed onto a stage and forced to their knees, their necks positioned directly under the blade. With manic efficiency, a guard released the blade. Most heads flew into a barrel in front of the platform. The ones that rolled off onto the stage were kicked to their final destination. The headless bodies were tossed onto a pile on the ground.

“Oh, grosss,” the woman complained. She leaned toward the camera. “Kind of like a bad zombie movie, isn’t it?” She sat back in her chair and made a face. “Whatever. I mean, like, are we supposed to believe that’s really happening? Isn’t that against the law or something?” She cackled. “As if.” She leisurely stretched her body, her crop top exposing a belly button ring. “I’m so shook.”

The woman tossed her hair over her shoulder and smiled. “Now, I’m not sharing this for the views. It is kind of sus. But if this shit is real, someone needs to get off the pot and do something about it. Aren’t there any woke cops out there who can play the James Bond card? Before anymore—” She swiped her finger across her throat and giggled. Then the screen went black.

Donovan shot up in his chair and blinked. Once. Twice. He shook his head and attempted to gather himself. What the hell? Sure, he had needed the sleep, even if it was only a thirty-minute nap, but the dreams he could do without. It had been less than forty-eight hours since the worldwide kidnappings. Donovan knew preparations for rescue were underway. But he also knew Bengotten and Hannigan were capable of even greater cruelty. He could only imagine the terror and the torture the victims were being subjected to.

It was difficult to understand how the vampire world was capable of this. He had long prided himself on their natural superiority, their ability to rise up above the petty politics and unjustified violence in the human and Were worlds. Yet overnight, vampires had become the monsters, the tyrants capable of such evil. That astonished him. For the first time in his long existence, Donovan was ashamed of being a vampire. If it was possible, he might very well submit to being turned into a human or a Were. He buried his face in his hands. Yes, he could live as a human. Perhaps he could ask Dr. Alvarez to find a way to turn off his vampirism, maybe using the gene-editing Marilyn could not stop talking about.

Review

Hilary has a way of making me laugh with the situations her characters find themselves in on a daily basis. Who would have thought that enemies could become lovers? Well, enemies might be too strong of a word, but sometimes high school drama doesn’t end at graduation.

This book is an expansion of her short story included in the Hate Me Like You Mean It anthology. I was confused at first when I started reading the book because I knew I had read it already but had forgotten about this anthology. However, this book has expanded and includes more of Pete’s story which helps round it out and adds more depth to his character. It gave us a better understanding of who he was and what he had endured prior to now.

Waverly and Pete seem to butt heads a lot. He resents the nickname she gave him when she was 6. They are nearly 40 and he still holds it against her, at least mildly. Waverly didn’t even recognize him when she was pulled over and it took some time before she discovered the truth and by that time it was almost too late to smooth the waters. They both go through a range of emotions before getting on the same page.

I had to chuckle when Pete puts Waverly’s neighbor in her place. She is your typical busybody and calls the police for everything…including leaves that apparently blew from Waverly’s yard to hers. I’m sure we all know someone like this.

The book has a HEA and I look forward to the next book in this series. We give it 4 paws up.

Review

I have read multiple books by this author and they have time travel down to a science. Their stories weave together seamlessly and I get lost in the historical time periods imagining what it might be like to live back then.

Roxie is an amazing singer and piano player but is overlooked in 2019 because there are so many singers out there. By some weird twist of fate, she ends up in 1925 which is the perfect decade for her voice. However, how she gets there and what she encounters are out of this world. She isn’t the first to go through this portal and probably won’t be the last.

I loved how Roxie tried to adapt to the 1920s and I don’t envy her having to deal with the neanderthal mentality of some of the men. This was right around the time that women got the vote, but that doesn’t mean that men didn’t try and keep them down. I was rather disgusted with Frankie who thought he owned Roxie just because he gave her a place to sleep, food to eat, and clothing. Of course, he held her prisoner so that didn’t help. But it did help Roxie meet the man of her dreams, Jake.

Jake and Roxie don’t have an easy relationship because of some baggage on Jake’s side and the whole truth of Roxie’s situation. This doesn’t stop them from admitting their attraction to one another and trying to figure out a relationship. It won’t be an easy road but true love always wins.

While this story is complete, there are some things that I don’t think were resolved or finalized but probably will be in the next book. But that is the way to end a novel, leaving us wanting more. Plus I don’t think we know all of Dr. Hall’s story or perhaps there is more to come for her. If you have read any of this author’s earlier books, you will remember the clinic for women and children in New York. It might have been a different time and doctor, but something resonated with me regarding this clinic.

If you are into time-travel novels and romance, you definitely need to read this book. We give it 5 paws up.

Set in the shadows of the Spanish Inquisition, this is the coming-of-age story of José Alfaro, a young refugee who forms a powerful bond with the mysterious Pirate Captain Toledano. It’s also a dynamic pirate adventure on the high seas, with hand-to-hand combat and ship-to-ship action, and the powerful story of a dark time in history when people took different paths to survive.

José Alfaro is a cocky, rambunctious teen in the 16th-century colony of Santo Domingo, pulling pranks and dodging the authorities. One day, José’s mischief lands him in serious trouble.

Hoping for a fresh start, he stows away on the Laqish, not knowing that it’s a pirate ship. From his hiding place, he watches the pirates divide their loot and plan their attacks on long days at sea. He also takes note of the respect they have for their captain, the intimidating Toledano.

But the captain has a secret―like José, he is a Jew. For him, piracy is not about the gold; it has a different purpose.

Under the tutelage of the ship’s quartermaster, José learns the intricacies of pirate life. But when he can, the captain finds ways to pull José away from the crew, to teach him about his ancestors.

Review by Nora

A one-of-a-kind graphic novel where the fight for justice never takes a backseat.

‘Jose and the Pirate Captain Toledano,’ by Arnon Z. Shore is not only a graphic novel, but a full world that readers of all ages can escape into for fun and adventure.

The story centers around Jose, a teenage boy living in the colony of San Domingo with his father. Though his father is the treasurer of the colony, he is immediately arrested when the Spanish Inquisition discovers that he and Jose are Jewish. Only barely managing to escape arrest himself, Jose makes it onto a ship where he stows away.

Once he is found, he quickly discovers that the ship is, in fact, a pirate ship belonging to a man called Captain Toledano. Toledano rescues Jose and eventually takes him under his wing. After telling Jose that he, too is Jewish, Toledano begins trying to teach the boy the ways of their shared faith, although Jose is not sure that he is interested.

Of course, Jose’s main interest is in saving his father from prison, and Toledano wishes to punish the head of the Inquisition in San Domingo, a man who caused him great pain in the past.

Although it deals with some heavy themes, ‘Jose and the Pirate Captain Toledano,’ is an entertaining and fun story for all ages. The historical aspects of the story are educational, without weighing down the swashbuckling adventure aspects.

This was a five-star graphic novel for me just based off of the story, but the art definitely adds to the overall appeal. Joshua Edelglass creates a stunning visual landscape that makes the reader feel as if they have been pulled into the story and makes you feel regret when it ends.

A wonderful adventure that just keeps on giving, ‘Jose and the Pirate Captain Toledano,’ is a work of art!

Synopsis

When the shocking discovery of a murdered woman’s body disturbs the tranquility of tourist season, the police detective in charge of the puzzling case must work alongside the new filmmaker in town to pursue every lead in the new romantic thriller from New York Times bestselling author Laura Griffin.

After a scandal derails her television reporting career, Macey Burns comes looking for a change of pace in Lost Beach, Texas. She’s ready to focus on her first passion–documentary filmmaking–and has a new job working for the island’s tourism board, shooting footage of the idyllic beachside community. Her plans for a relaxing rebound are dashed when she realizes the cottage she’s renting belonged to the woman whose body was just found in the sand dunes.

Detective Owen Breda is under intense pressure to solve this murder. Violent crimes are rising in his small town, and he can’t stand to see anyone else hurt…especially not the beautiful documentarian who keeps showing up at the precinct.

With the clock ticking, cameras rolling, and body count climbing, Macey and Owen must use all their resources to find the killer without getting caught in the crosshairs.

Macey blinked at the windshield, shocked. Her heart raced as she tried to catch her breath. The car was tilted, and the headlights illuminated a patch of weeds and a gravelly strip of shoulder.

Macey put the gearshift in park and shoved open the door. She started to get out, but the seat belt yanked her back. Unbuckling it, she slid out. Rain pelted her as she looked around in a daze.

What the hell had happened? One second she’d been driving along and the next second it was like aliens had seized control of the car. And she’d definitely felt a bump. Had she hit something?

Glancing at the road, she saw no other traffic. She retrieved her cell phone and slammed the door. Her wet flip-flops thwacked against the gravel as she walked around the front of the Honda and checked for damage. No dents. No sign of an animal.

She stopped beside the front bumper. The right tire was flat.

“Crap.”

She switched on her cell phone’s flashlight and aimed it at the tire. Rain streamed down her face and neck. What now? She turned off the flashlight and called Josh, but he didn’t pick up, so she sent him a text:

SOS! Flat tire. Call me.

A car raced past and sprayed her with water. She yelped and whirled around, but the driver didn’t even slow. Cursing, she glanced up and down the highway. This end of the island was fairly desolate-mostly campgrounds and nature parks. She’d passed a marina, but that was a ways back.

When she’d planned her trip down here, she had wanted seclusion. After weeks of scouring listings, she’d been ecstatic when a long-term rental popped up on the island’s north end, just footsteps from the beach. The idea of being away from town, surrounded by sand and waves and the soundtrack of nature, had been immensely appealing. But now she wasn’t sure. Maybe she should have followed Josh’s advice and rented an apartment in town for the summer.

Macey shivered and rubbed her bare arms, chilled from the rain despite the warm temperature. Her tank top and jeans were already soaked through, and she was out here alone and stranded.

I can handle it.

Ha. Famous last words.

She went back around the Honda and reached inside once again, this time to pop the trunk. It was a new-to-her car, and she didn’t know the spare tire situation, but surely there was something in back. Macey had helped a boyfriend change a tire in college once. Well, maybe not helped, but she’d watched, and it had seemed pretty straightforward.

She tromped back to the trunk and slid aside the tripod and the suitcase filled with camera equipment. After finding the corner tab, she peeled back the layer of carpet.

Score! A spare tire, along with a heavy metal tool-a lug wrench?-and what had to be a jack.

But the spare seemed . . . off. She frowned down at the anemic-looking tire. Pressing her fingers against it, she confirmed her suspicion.

The spare was flat, too.

“Crap,” she said again.

Macey checked her phone. Still nothing from Josh. She hated asking a man to rescue her, but it was freaking pouring, and she was out of options.

Another lightning strobe, followed by a clap of thunder. Then a jagged white bolt zapped down from above.

She looked up at the sky, awestruck. The ferocious beauty of it reminded her of why she’d been attracted to Lost Beach in the first place. She’d been lured by the film project, of course, which would pay her bills while she got her life sorted. But beyond that, she’d been attracted by the dramatic juxtaposition of nature and people. She’d been lured by the rugged Texas coast and one of the last long stretches of untamed beach and twenty-foot dunes.

Rainwater trickled down the front of her shirt, reminding her of her plight. She stared down at the useless tire.

Her trip was off to a rocky start. She wasn’t superstitious-at least not usually-and she refused to take tonight as a bad omen. She was here for the entire summer, and no matter what happened she planned to make the best of it.

A flash of light had her turning around. A pair of headlights approached, high and wide apart, like a pickup truck. The truck slowed, and she felt a ripple of unease.

But maybe this was just what she needed-some Good Samaritan here to help her.

The truck rolled to a stop and the driver’s-side door opened.

Macey squinted into the glare. Nerves fluttered in her stomach as a man got out. Tall, wide shoulders, baseball cap. She couldn’t see his face, only his towering silhouette against the light as he walked toward her.

As he got closer, she saw that he was very tall-six-three, at least, and he easily outweighed her by a hundred pounds. Oftentimes Macey liked being short because people underestimated her. This was not one of those times.

“Need a hand?”

Review

This was quite an interesting tale for Jacob. It details his time and experience in prison, even during the pandemic. He is candid about what landed him in prison, how inmates segregated themselves by race and other factors, and even his wedding while he was incarcerated.

His tale is told with excerpts from his articles in The Sun, unpublished poems, and his thoughts about how he landed there, what was right or wrong with the system, living in prison during a pandemic, and the support he received from his family and especially, his wife.

I enjoyed learning different things about Jacob and how this prison stint changed his life and his outlook. I may not have agreed with everything he wrote about when it came to politics and other topics, but I am able to respect his thoughts since they were based on what he was experiencing while in prison and I can appreciate why he might feel that way.

Each chapter isn’t very long but the words will definitely make you think before doing something illegal that lands you in prison.

Overall, we give this 4 paws up

Review

This story about Gwen could be a great teacher to young children to be thankful for what they have instead of what they don’t.

Gwen has a lunch that doesn’t thrill her but at least she has a lunch because some children do not. She throws a tantrum when she doesn’t get a toy, her jacket isn’t washed, and her mom won’t help her with all of her math homework. Let’s just say Gwen needs an attitude adjustment. But by the end of the book, she realizes that she is wrong and maybe she should be thankful for what she does have in her life.

I enjoyed the lessons that Gwen was being taught and the illustrations defined the scene quite well. The pages are colorful and will hold a child’s attention.

We give this book 5 paws up.
