“One Summer Night is the perfect escape! It’s tender, funny and sexy, with wonderful characters you’ll fall in love with. You can’t go wrong with Caridad Pineiro.”—RAEANNE THAYNE, USA Today bestselling author

Excerpt

Jonathan Pierce stared hard at the mirror, wondering what Connie Reyes might see tonight when she and her friends came over for the dinner his brother Owen had arranged. What Connie might think after so much time had passed.

The teen she had known seven years earlier was gone as was the man she’d run into shortly after Hurricane Sandy.  That man had been replaced by one who had known his share of hardship and success. Barely perceptible laugh lines that hadn’t been there that last summer bracketed his mouth and eyes. There was a thin scar above one brow thanks to a crash while testing a new vehicle prototype on the Bonneville Salt Flats. Another jagged white line on his jaw was courtesy of shrapnel when a hydrogen fuel cell had unexpectedly exploded in their lab.

He looked away and leaned heavily on the edge of the vanity, noting the other assorted nicks and scars on his hands. They were the hands of a man who had lived life to the fullest and made himself what he wanted to be and not what others expected. He knew he’d sometimes hurt people with his choices, especially his older brother Owen, who’d had to shoulder the burden of the family business as well as their father’s ire whenever one of Jonathan’s escapades caught the attention of the media.

He’d gotten used to the interest the press had in him. After all, he was the renegade son of a wealthy family. A self-taught inventor who had sold his first small invention for millions. He was now revolutionizing the motor vehicle and battery industries with his innovative designs, unconventional methods, and fearless experiments.

He had brought idea after idea to life with detailed research and hard work. There had been failures along the way, but that had only made the successes that much more enjoyable. He had celebrated those successes with his team, his brother, and a bevy of actresses and models who were only too keen to be seen on the arm of a rebellious multi-millionaire who might soon be a billionaire if his company’s stock prices continued to climb.

Only… none of those women could hold a candle to Connie.

Connie, who he would see in just a few hours thanks to his brother. Owen had finally decided to fight for Maggie Sinclair, and he was happy that his brother was following his heart.  But while Jonathan would do almost anything for Owen, he wasn’t happy about having to spend time with Connie.

Smart and beautiful Connie, he thought with a sigh and a shake of his head.

He’d managed to avoid her for the last several years. Sure, he’d seen her after Sandy and occasionally from afar when Maggie and her friends had come down to Sea Kiss. Or every now and then when he’d gone to some business event in the city.

He’d tried to tell himself he didn’t like the sleek professional woman she’d become. That she wasn’t prettier than ever. He tried not to imagine peeling off those elegant business suits to reveal the real woman beneath. But he was lying to himself.

He had never really gotten over the Connie Reyes that had emerged that summer they had shared.  The woman who had learned to live for the moment and have fun.  Who had been carefree and willing to explore their love. He doubted he would ever forget that women and wondered if she was still there, trapped inside her very prim and proper suits.

Maybe he’d find out tonight, he thought, and prepared himself for what might be a very difficult dinner.

***

Connie Reyes splayed her hand across the nervous butterflies in her stomach that were beating their wings so violently, she felt like throwing up. She was tempted to beg off from dinner with the Pierce boys, only Maggie needed her moral support and Connie never disappointed a friend. Especially Maggie, who was like a sister.  She’d do anything for Maggie, even suffering through a meal with Jonathan Pierce.

“You feeling okay? You’re looking a little . . .” said Emma Grant, her other BFF. Emma eyed her intently, her green-eyed gaze inquisitive.

“I’m just fine,” she lied, but it was clear from Emma’s meaningful stare that her friend suspected something was up as they followed Maggie onto the patio and to the long row of tall privet hedges that separated the two Jersey Shore mansions.

She tamed the flutters much as she did when arguing a case before a judge and trudged along behind Maggie as they eased through the hedges and approached the entrance to the Pierce mansion. They had barely reached the front porch when Owen threw open the door, a big friendly smile on his handsome face.

He welcomed them warmly, but Connie couldn’t resist mumbling to Emma, “Said the spider to the fly.” As much as she wanted things to work out with Owen, she still worried about how Maggie would be hurt if they didn’t.

Emma jabbed her in the ribs and luckily, it seemed as if Owen either hadn’t heard her comment or if he had, was choosing to ignore it. She gave him props if it was the latter, since it indicated he was truly trying to be nice for Maggie’s sake.

They quickly walked through the foyer and living room and back to the dining area. Jonathan was in the kitchen, an apron over his jeans and T-shirt. The T-shirt hugged his broad, muscled chest and laid bare the powerful muscles of his arms. His light brown hair still had the kiss of the summer sun and was tied back from his face, revealing the sharp lines of his features.

He looked older, but still so handsome.

She had thought she could handle this dinner for her friend’s sake.  That she could face Jonathan and not get caught up in the emotions from years past.  But it was impossible to forget the way he’d held her in his arms, a dimpled smile on his lips, his sea-blue eyes bright with humor and love. With that memory, the flutters in her stomach were replaced by an ache in the region of her heart.

Synopsis

When Peter Davidson’s grandson, Joel, got engaged,  Davidson decided to jot down a few words of marital advice for him, based on his vast experience as a husband. Then Davidson thought, why share this wisdom with only one person when I can share it with the whole world, so he started a blog listing new marital advice every week. As the popularity of the blog grew, people suggested that the material should be turned into a book.  The result is Marital Advice to my Grandson, Joel.

The original goal was to provide conversational, upbeat advice to Davidson’s grandson about his role in his upcoming marriage and how to be a proper husband. Now, as a book, the goal remains the same but the audience includes all men, whether they are engaged, married, or single. Women will enjoy the insight and humor of the book and will appreciate the book’s positive message.

Advice to Joel, and to any man, includes:  make sure that you buy a roll of electrical tape before you volunteer to do the vacuuming – and why, how to deal with your wife’s steely-eyed, clinched-jaw scowl, known as “The Look,” how to answer your wife’s questions such as, “Does this dress make my ass look big?,” the warning that your mouth will get you into a whole lot more trouble than your Willy ever will, and how to create the world’s most powerful anniversary card for your wife.

Virtually all of the material in the book is presented in the form of upbeat stories, scenarious., and examples.  This is not the type of advice that you’ll find in a textbook on marriage or in a book on marital relations written by some psychiatrist.  This is the real stuff for real people.

Excerpt

The goal of Marital Advice to my Grandson, Joel is to be long enough to provide a good deal of valuable information, but short enough so guys might actually read it.

An early section of the book, Marital Wisdom, Passed Down for Generations, includes wisdom that the author received when he got married and which he is now passing down to his grandson.  The comments in parentheses are Davidson’s to give his grandson a little help in deciphering the wisdom.

  • “Be careful what you confess to in a weak moment – women have a memory like an elephant.” (Every married man on earth has found this out first hand.)
  • “Measure twice and saw once.” (The purveyor of this fabulous wisdom was a carpenter, but in married terms, I think it probably means you should think twice before you open your mouth,)
  • Your wife is allowed to say low-down, mean, nasty things about her mother, but you are not.” (It’s a mother-daughter thing that you’ll never understand.)
  • “If you whisper another woman’s name in your wife’s ear, or shout it, particularly during a moment of passion, there is no way to lie your way out of it, but give it a try anyway.” (This advice came from a guy who spent three years sleeping in the basement.)
  • “Break only one law at a time.” (This advice could apply to may things, but in marriage, I think it means you should not forget your wife’s birthday and your anniversary in the same year.)

The book includes over twenty short quotations that summarize important points from the book or present philosophical thoughts for the reader to ponder.  Each occupies a full page.  Several of those quotations are:

As the Marital Bus rumbles down the highway of life, there cannot be two people wrestling for the steering wheel, or surely the bus will crash.

Know when it is your turn to drive, and when it is time to quietly sit in the back seat.

Every day of your married life will be an adventure, particularly on those days that the two of you never even leave the house.

When your wife says, “Dear will you help me . . . .”

She doesn’t mean next month, next week, tomorrow, or when the game you’re watching is over.

She means NOW.

So hop to it and get it out of the way and then you can peacefully return to what you were doing.

“Buy me flowers, candy, jewelry, clothing, perfume, a card, or nothing at all – but do not ever buy me an implement of work as a gift”  (This one is my favorite!  Unless I ask for the work implement!)

When your wife gives you that steely-eyed, clenched-jaw scowl, known as “The Look,” it means that you have obviously done something wrong, but what? You will find out as soon as she gets you alone.

Review

This book is chock full of advice (most good!) served with a side of humor.  I really enjoyed how one man took what he learned during his marriage, and from others, and compiled it into a blog and then a book.  Joel & Abby (pictured above) definitely received quite the gift with these words of wisdom.  I’m not sure which parts I liked the most, but deep down the advice is to love and honor your spouse and to encourage each other to continue to grow and become a better spouse, father, and more.

You’ll find that the author calls his wife Grandma – which makes perfect sense because he wrote this book for his grandson and that is how he knows her.  I think it is endearing and I especially enjoyed the stories of how he surprised her and such.  It is a reflection of their relationship that he is hoping Joel acknowledges and has in his relationship with Abby.

Overall this is a fun read with some sage advice.  We give this 4 paws up.

Title: All The Little Lights
Author: Jamie McGuire
Release Date: May 29, 2018

Synopsis

The first time Elliott Youngblood spots Catherine Calhoun, he’s just a boy with a camera, and he’s never seen a sadder and more beautiful sight. Both Elliott and Catherine feel like outcasts, yet they find an easy friendship with each other. But when Catherine needs him most, Elliott is forced to leave town.

Elliott finally returns, but he and Catherine are now different people. He’s a star high school athlete, and she spends all her free time working at her mother’s mysterious bed-and-breakfast. Catherine hasn’t forgiven Elliott for abandoning her, but he’s determined to win back her friendship…and her heart.

Just when Catherine is ready to fully trust Elliott, he becomes the prime suspect in a local tragedy. Despite the town’s growing suspicions, Catherine clings to her love for Elliott. But a devastating secret that Catherine has buried could destroy whatever chance of happiness they have left.

Message from Elliott

My name is Elliott. You don’t know my story yet, but you will. I spent my summers with my aunt and uncle just down the street from Catherine. She lives in a looming, rickety bed and breakfast called the Juniper, and spends most of her time outside, away from the memories that live between the Juniper’s walls amidst more tangible dangers that I never knew existed until now.

It’s not so much that I fell in love or even that I fought for it, but that a war is waging inside Catherine’s home—one I can’t fight for her. It doesn’t matter how strong I am, or how determined I am to stay. I can only get close enough to observe her pain in detail. And, so I stay, and wait, and help her the only way I know how; to do what I couldn’t for her before.

I hope you’ll understand.

Excerpt

Elliott began to speak, but a small group of girls approached our table.

“Aw,” Presley said, dramatically touching her chest. “Catherine got herself a boyfriend. I feel so bad that all this time we thought you were lying about him being from out of town.”

Three carbon copies of Presley—Tara and Tatum Martin and Brie Burns—all giggled and tossed their bleached-blonde tresses. Tara and Tatum were identical twins, but they all strived to look like Presley.

“Maybe just outside of town,” Brie said. “Like a reservation, maybe?”

“Oklahoma doesn’t have reservations,” I said, appalled by her stupidity.

“Yeah, they do,” Brie argued.

“You’re thinking of tribal land,” Elliott said, unfazed.

“I’m Presley,” she said to Elliott, smug.

I looked away, not wanting to witness their introduction, but Elliott didn’t move or speak, so I turned to see what was holding up their exchange. Elliott offered me a small grin, ignoring Presley’s outstretched hand.

She made a face and crossed her arms. “Is Brie right? Do you live in White Eagle?”

Elliott raised an eyebrow. “That’s the headquarters for the Ponca tribe.”

“And?” Presley sniped.

Elliott sighed, seeming bored. “I’m Cherokee.”

“So that’s an Indian, right? Isn’t White Eagle for Indians?” she asked.

“Just go away, Presley,” I pleaded, worried she would say something even more offensive.

Excitement sparked in Presley’s eyes. “Wow, Kit-Cat. Are we getting a little big for our britches?”

I looked up at her, anger blazing in my eyes. “It’s Catherine.”

Presley led them to a booth across the room, continuing to tease Elliott and me from afar.

“I’m so sorry,” I whispered. “They’re just doing it because you’re with me.”

“Because I’m with you?”

“They hate me,” I grumbled.

He turned his spoon upside down and stuck it in his mouth, seeming unaffected. “It’s not hard to see why.”

I wondered what about my outward appearance made it so obvious. Maybe that’s why the town hadn’t stopped blaming Mama and me for my grandparents’ mistakes. Maybe I looked like someone they should hate.

“Why do you look embarrassed?” he asked.

“I guess I was hoping you didn’t know about my family and the smelter.”

“Oh. That. My aunt told me years ago. Is that what you think? That they’re mean to you because of your family history with the town?”

“Why else?”

“Catherine.” My name sounded like a soft laugh tumbling from his mouth. “They’re jealous of you.”

I frowned and shook my head. “What could they possibly be jealous of me for? We barely have two pennies to rub together.”

“Have you seen yourself?” he asked.

I blushed and looked down. Only Dad had ever complimented my looks.

“You’re all the things they’re not.”

I crossed my arms on the table and watched the warm hue of the corner streetlight blink between the branches of a tree. It was a strange feeling, wanting to hear more and hoping he’d talk about anything else. “What they said doesn’t bother you?” I asked, surprised.

“It use to.”

“Now it doesn’t?”

“My uncle John says people can only make us angry if we let them, and if we let them, we give them power.”

“That’s pretty profound.”

“I listen to him sometimes, even though he thinks I don’t.”

“What else does he say?” He didn’t hesitate. “That you either get good at rising above and meeting ignorance with education, or you get really good at being bitter.”

I smiled. Elliott spoke his uncle’s words with respect.

“So you just choose not to let what people say get to you?”

“Pretty much.”

“How?” I said, leaning in. I was genuinely curious, hoping he would unveil some magical secret that would end the misery Presley and her friends loved invoking in me.

“Oh, I get angry. It gets old when people feel the need to tell me their great-grandmother was a Cherokee princess, or that stupid joke about if I got my name from the first thing my parents saw after they walked out of a teepee. I can get heated when someone calls me chief, when I see people in headdresses outside of our ceremonies. But my uncle says we should either be compassionate and educate or leave them alone in their ignorance. Besides, there’s too much ignorance in the world to let it all get to me. If I did, all I’d ever feel is anger, and I don’t want to be like my mom.”

“Is that why you were punching our tree?”

He looked down, either unwilling or unable to answer the question.

“A lot bothers me,” I grumbled, sitting back. I glanced at the clones, dressed in cutoff denim shorts and floral blouses, just variations of the same shirt from the same store.

Dad tried to make sure I had the right clothes and the right backpack, but year after year Mama watched as more of my childhood friends faded away. She began to wonder what we’d done wrong, and then I began to wonder, too.

The truth was, I hated Presley for hating me. I didn’t have the heart to tell Mama that I would never fit in. I wasn’t vile enough for those small-town, small-minded girls. It took me a long time to figure out that I didn’t really want to, but at fifteen, I sometimes wondered if it was better than being alone. Dad couldn’t be my best friend forever. I took a bite of my sherbet.

“Stop,” Elliott said.

“Stop what?” I asked, the cool orangey-goodness melting on my tongue.

“Looking at them like you wish you were sitting over there. You’re better than that.”

“We should probably, um . . . we should go.”

Elliott stood, waiting for me to slide out of the booth. He followed me out, so I wasn’t sure if he noticed Presley and the clones covering their insults and giggles with their hands.

When he stopped next to the trash can behind their booth, I knew he had. “What are you laughing at?” he asked.

I tugged on his T-shirt, begging him with my eyes to keep walking.

Presley rolled her shoulders and lifted her chin, thrilled to be acknowledged. “Just how cute is Kit-Cat with her new boyfriend? It’s precious how you don’t want to hurt her feelings. I mean . . . I have to assume that’s what”—she gestured to us—“this is.”

Elliott walked over to their table, and the girls’ giggles quieted. He knocked on the wood and sighed. “You know why you’ll never outgrow the need to make others feel like shit so you can feel better, Presley?”

She narrowed her eyes at him, watching him like a snake ready to strike.

Elliott continued, “Because it’s a temporary high. It never lasts, and you’ll never stop because it’s the only happiness you’ll ever have in your sad, pathetic life that revolves around manicures and highlighting your hair. Your friends? They don’t like you. No one ever will because you don’t like yourself. So every time you give Catherine a hard time, she’ll know. She’ll know why you’re doing it, just like your friends will know. Just like you’ll know that you’re overcompensating. Every time you throw insults Catherine’s way, it’s that much less of a secret.” He made eye contact with each clone and then Presley. “Have the day you deserve.”

He returned to the door and held it open, gesturing for me to walk through. We navigated the parked cars until we were on the other side of the lot, and headed back toward our neighborhood. The streetlamps were on, the gnats and mosquitoes buzzing beneath the bright bulbs. The quiet made the sounds of our shoes against the pavement more prominent.

“That was,” I began, searching for the right word, “legendary. I could never tell someone off like that.”

“Well, I don’t live here, so that makes it easier. And that wasn’t entirely mine.”

“What do you mean?” “It’s from a scene in Detention Club Musical. Don’t tell me you didn’t watch it when you were little.”

I stared at him in disbelief, and then laughter erupted from my throat. “The movie that came out when we were eight?”

“I watched it every day for like a year and a half.”

I giggled. “Wow. I can’t believe I didn’t catch it.”

“I’m just glad Presley didn’t. That would have made my monologue much less intimidating.”

Barnabas Tew and The Case Of The Missing Scarab
Cozy Mystery
1st in Series
Crooked Cat Books
Release Date – June 3, 2017
Paperback: 274 pages

Synopsis

Barnabas Tew is a private detective struggling to survive in his trade in Victorian London. Fearing that he is not as clever as he had hoped to be, he is plagued by a lack of confidence brought on in no small part by his failure to prevent the untimely deaths of several of his clients.

Matters only get worse when Anubis, the Egyptian God of the Dead, is referred to Barnabas by a former client (who perished in a terribly unfortunate incident which was almost certainly not Barnabas’ fault). Anubis sends for Barnabas (in a most uncivilized manner) and tells him that the scarab beetle in charge of rolling the sun across the sky every day has been kidnapped, and perhaps dismembered entirely.

The Land of the Dead is in chaos, which will soon spill over into the Land of the Living if Barnabas – together with his trusty assistant, Wilfred – cannot set matters to right. Pulled from his predictable (if unremarkable) life in Marylebone, Barnabas must match his wits against the capricious and dangerous Egyptian gods in order to unravel the mystery of the missing beetle and thereby save the world.

Review

This is quite a different concept (to me at least) for a cozy/mystery. The lead detective, Barnabus, is killed within the first few chapters (by a mummy) and is taken to the Egyptian underworld because Anubis needs his help to determine who kidnapped Khepra, the scarab beetle that controls the sun. His sidekick, Wilfred, is also killed (also by the same mummy) and delivered to the underworld.

There are quite a few upsides to this book – education on Egyptian mythology and the various gods that ruled their world; a different landscape for a mystery (some say it is steampunk or Victorian); and Sherlock Holmes type characters. (Of course, the resemblance to Sherlock Holmes ends with the fact that they are detectives.) And the mystery led me in circles and I didn’t figure it out until it was revealed. There were some clues along the way but not too many that made it easy to figure out too early in the book. I loved how the female gods “saved the day” near the end. I won’t say much and who, but it shows you should never count a woman out, even if she is a god!

I am not fond of Barnabus’ character. He’s a bumbling detective and I wonder how he ever solved any cases. Perhaps that is part of his charm? Wilfred is slightly better and at least he tries to keep Barnabus on track. I do wish there had been more of a description of the underworld. I really didn’t have the best idea of what it might look like other than a river, sandy areas, and homes of the various gods.

Meet Socrates

Legendary philosopher, pion of bravery and morality, a figure so strong his ideas and presence pervade the centuries and the dimensions of time and space. Picked Off (A Brie Hooker Mystery)
Cozy Mystery
2nd in Series
Setting – South Carolina
Henery Press (June 5, 2018)
Hardcover – 270 Pages

Synopsis

It’s been seven months since Brie Hooker, a vegan, moved to Udderly Kidding Dairy to live with her feisty Aunt Eva, a confirmed carnivore.

But tonight there’ll be no family feud over dinner entrees.

Udderly’s hosting a campaign fundraiser for Eva’s best friend, who hopes to be South Carolina’s next governor. The candidate’s son, a pro quarterback, is flying home for the wingding. And Brie’s eager to get a close-up view of the cute tush she’s admired on TV, even though she’s reluctantly sworn off even more tempting local beefcake.

The campaign fundraiser promises to be a huge success until a pitchfork attack turns the goat farm into a crime scene—again.

To protect her friends, Brie puts her sleuthing skills to work. Will she live long enough to find out who’s behind a vicious assault, a kidnapping, blackmail, and murder?

Review

This is such a fun series and it is interesting to see how the mystery plays out since it does not hinge on someone being murdered.

I’ve really enjoyed getting to know these characters – Brie the vegan chef, her wacky friend Mollye, Aunt Eva, and of course the two men vying for Brie’s affection – Paint and Andy. And of course the goat farm’s name is very creative – Udderly Kidding.

This book pulled in politics, attempted murder, kidnapping, and gambling into the why of the mystery. There is a murder but as I said earlier, it is not what causes Brie and the gang to start looking into this curious situation. I was partially surprised at how the mystery portion unveiled. While I wasn’t totally shocked at who was behind it all, it did take awhile before I guessed it might be this character.

I still love the way Brie uses meat and cheese to substitute for curse words. It cracks me up every time.

This is a fun series and the only thing that might make it better is some vegan recipes.

We give it 4 paws up.

About the Author

Linda Lovely finds writing pure fiction isn’t a huge stretch given the years she’s spent penning PR and ad copy. Linda writes a blend of mystery and humor, chuckling as she plots to “disappear” the types of characters who most annoy her. Quite satisfying, plus there’s no need to pester relatives for bail. Her newest series offers goodnatured salutes to both her vegan family doctor and her cheese-addicted kin. She’s an enthusiastic Sisters in Crime member and helps organize the popular Writers’ Police Academy. When not writing or reading, Linda takes long walks with her husband, swims, gardens, and plays tennis.
