A PURR Before DYING: A Nick and Nora Mystery
Cozy Mystery
6th in Series
Setting – California
Beyond The Page (February 21, 2023)

Synopsis

No one’s who they seem in the thrilling new Nick and Nora Mystery, and someone’s playing the part of a clever killer . . .

When a nighttime soap opera comes to town to film an episode, no one’s more excited than Nora Charles, who’s landed the contract for catering the shoot. But if she thought the show’s plotlines were full of drama and intrigue, that’s nothing compared to what she witnesses among the cast and crew, who are sneaking off for secret liaisons one minute and at each other’s throats the next. It’s all a titillating behind-the-scenes look for Nora—until she stumbles across the body of the show’s slain director.

It’s not long before the local authorities finger the brother of Nora’s good friend for the evil deed, and it’s up to Nora and her sidekick Nick to get him off the hook. As she begins to sort out the cast’s romantic entanglements and professional rivalries looking for a motive, she also discovers that the victim was involved in the mysterious death of the show’s previous director.

And then another member of the crew is found murdered, and Nora knows she’ll have to act fast to figure out who’s playing the part of the killer, before she’s cast in the role of the next victim . . .

Nick cocked his head and let out a loud merow.

I leaned over to give him a scratch on the white streak behind his ear. “Let’s think. Who stood to profit the most from Harriman’s death?”

Nick’s paw snaked out, tapped the screen where the article on Forbes taking over directorial duties was still on display. “Forbes is the logical choice, I agree.” I typed his name into the search engine, and stifled a gasp at the number of pages that came up. There were easily over a hundred. I narrowed it down a bit by typing in “Anton Forbes—Dean Harriman” and got considerably fewer. I clicked on a handful and found them all to say mostly the same thing: Harriman was considered an eccentric genius, and though Forbes was talented, many felt he lacked Harriman’s drive. Harriman had plucked him from doing horror movies and taken him under his wing. They’d worked together on two prior projects, both of which had been commercial successes. Every article ended with the same sentiment: Harriman’s untimely death had given Forbes’s fledgling career a much-needed boost. I started to close the computer, but Nick’s paw shot out, covering my hand.

“Merow.”

“You think I should search a bit more? Okay.”

Finally at the bottom of the ninth page of results I found an article entitled “Dean Harriman, Casualty or Calculation?” It had been written two weeks after the director’s death by a reporter named Millicent Martin. The gist of the article was that Harriman, although brilliant, had made many enemies in his life. Had someone decided to end it prematurely? There was a reference near the end to Forbes’s good fortune at his mentor’s demise. A veiled reference, perhaps, to a motive? The last line of the article was particularly interesting:

Rumor has it Harriman was set to reveal something stunning about one of his coworkers. Unfortunately—or is it conveniently?—his lips are now forever sealed.

I leaned back in the chair and rubbed my temples. Nick, sprawled next to the laptop, looked over at me, his golden eyes wide.

“Well, there was a police investigation, and they couldn’t find any evidence to indicate it was anything other than an accident caused by Harriman’s carelessness and ego. Aside from this Millicent Martin, everyone else seems to agree. That last line of her article is particularly interesting, right? I wonder what Harriman was going to reveal, and about who? I bet this Millicent Martin thought it was Forbes.”

Nick cocked his head and the corners of his lips turned down. Then he jumped off the table and disappeared underneath. A few minutes later I heard the familiar sound of Scrabble tiles being batted around. I lifted up the edge of the tablecloth just as the tiles came flying out. I picked them up, laid them on the table and started to move them around. A few minutes later I stood back and surveyed the word I’d spelled out.

Bogus. A word that meant something not genuine. A phony, a sham.

I heard a loud merow from underneath the table. It seemed my kitty definitely thought there was something off about Harriman’s death. “Fine, Nick.” If I had to be perfectly honest, something didn’t strike me right either. It was almost as if the death had been a bit too pat and terribly convenient for Anton Forbes, particularly if he’d been the object of Harriman’s big reveal.

I’d been an investigative reporter for too long to just turn my back on what seemed to be a good mystery.

I heard a loud tap tap tap and shifted my gaze to the rear counter. Nick had wriggled out from underneath the table and had leapt onto the counter. He stretched up on his haunches, tapping his claws at the frame that held my newly acquired PI license.

“Okay, fine,” I muttered and punched a number into my cell, that of Hank Prince, my former informant from my Chicago reporting days. If there was anyone who could dig up dirt buried deep, Hank was the man.

“This is Hank Prince. I’m not available to take your call right now, but leave a message and I’ll return your call as soon as I can.”

“Hey, Hank,” I said. “Nora here. Can you do me a quick favor when you get some time? No rush, but I need some information about the death of a director named Dean Harriman. Also, anything you can find on a director named Anton Forbes, and any suspicious deaths he might have been associated with. It’s, ah, for a possible Noir story. Thanks.”

Well, I wasn’t lying. Noir was the online true crime magazine I wrote for part-time. Since acquiring my license I’d written a few articles on becoming a PI, which had proven to be a big hit with the readers, but I’d no doubt that an article on an actual investigation into a mysterious death by a fledgling PI would have both readers and my editor salivating. I hung up and glanced down. Nick squatted by my feet. He lifted his head and I swear his kitty lips parted in a smile.

“Happy now?” I asked him. “We’ll see what, if anything, Hank can scare up. And if he doesn’t turn up anything suspicious on either front, it’s a dead issue. Okay?”

“Merow,” said Nick. Then he turned around, tail straight up, walked over to the refrigerator, turned around twice and lay down.

I sighed. It couldn’t do any harm to see what, if anything, Hank might turn up. If there was one thing I knew from experience it was that when it came to crime, Nick’s premonitions were nothing to sneeze at.

A rural New Zealand vacation turns poisonous.

Antiquities expert Annalisse Drury and tycoon Alec Zavos are at an impasse in their relationship when Alec refuses to clear up a paternity issue with an ex-lover.

Frustrated with his avoidance when their future is at stake, Annalisse accepts an invitation from an acquaintance to fly to New Zealand—hoping to escape the recent turbulence in her life.

But even Annalisse’s cottage idyll on the family sheep farm isn’t immune to intrigue.

Alec sends a mutual friend and detective, Bill Drake, to follow her, and a local resident who accompanies them from the Christchurch airport dies mysteriously soon after. A second violent death finds Annalisse and Bill at odds with the official investigations.

The local police want to close both cases as quickly as possible—without unearthing the town’s dirty secrets.

As she and Bill pursue their own leads at serious cost, the dual mysteries force Annalisse to question everything she thought she knew about family ties, politics, and the art of small-town betrayal.

Well, I didn’t see that ending coming! Maybe not the ending per se, but the murderer’s revelation. You could have knocked me over with a feather!

This is the fourth in the series, and while could be read on its own, it is best to have an understanding of the history between the various characters. This book also delivers a slower pace while we dive more into Annalisse’s background and family, which we discovered in a previous book. I can only imagine the questions she has for her mother if she can ever catch up to her again. But her trip to New Zealand still provided answers to some questions. I don’t want to spoil anything, so you’ll have to read the book to uncover those questions and answers.

Annalisse is still holding Alec at bay. These two have more baggage than most characters I see, but if you understand everything they have been through until this point, you might have a better grasp on everything that has kept them from fully committing to one another. I would have thought after two years that they could trust each other more than they seemed to. However, I am happy to say that they make some inroads into this by the end of this book. Another reason to read the book; because I’m not going to give away any spoilers.

We also learn more about Bill in this book and some of his past stories. He is a fantastic investigator, and he and Annalisse make a good team, especially when trying to sort out the murders in this small town. I think it would be fascinating to have a spinoff book that gives us more background on Bill. I believe there is a gem hiding inside of him just from the little bit that we learn in this book.

I loved the descriptions of New Zealand, and I want to visit this country even more now. The author paints a picture that will stick in your mind. The author also provides detailed information about sheep, and this might cause you to go down a rabbit hole looking up the various breed and their traits.

This book is filled with deception, corruption, and so much more. I appreciated the slower pace because it allowed me to digest everything that was happening and ruminate on what could possibly happen next. With the new information that is revealed in this book, it has me on pins and needles, waiting for the next book to see how a few situations resolve themselves.

We give this book 4 paws up.

Review

What a fun setting for this new cozy series, a tiny home community. I love looking at tiny homes; just not 100% sure I could live in one. If I did, I would need someone like Emma to help me downsize my current home to a new one. I do love all of the suggestions in the book for hidden storage spaces built into these tiny homes; they are tips that could be used for any sized home.

Emma is surprised by the sudden appearance of her grandmother at the beginning of the book. Granny Rose has decided that she doesn’t want to live by her son’s rules and unilaterally decides to move in with Emma. Now if you think about it, Emma lives in a tiny house. Is there enough room for two people? Yes and no. But at the same time, Emma realizes how lonely she has been, despite her business and her friends. Granny Rose is a hoot and fits right in, mainly when she adopts a Great Dane named Buck. Adopt is a strong word. It is really a part of a small house that she wants to purchase from the murder victim’s wife.

I enjoyed the varied cast of characters. Emma has some good friends, and a few new ones are added to the mix in pursuit of the killer. There is even a potential love interest for Emma, but I think that might take another book or two to come to fruition.

The murder is engaging, and I had no idea who the killer was and was quite surprised when all was revealed. There are not many clues, or I just missed them. But it was a well-written mystery, and the answer might surprise you as much as it did me.

I think this is going to be a fun new series, and I look forward to upcoming books. We give this book 4 paws up.

Excerpt

I’m pretty sure I’m about to die in space. And I just turned twelve and a half.

The frayed end of my tether whips around like a lasso as I flip front over back and sideways.

I see the long blue smear of Earth hurtling past. The silver hull of my ship, the Aether, whizzes by in a blur before I gasp at the once-glorious International Space Station. Now, just wreckage. The

ISS spits pieces that twinkle in the sunlight. Sparks sizzle and blink against the black backdrop of the endless universe.

My spin continues until all I can see is the void of deep space, punctured by bright pinpricks of gaseous stars millions of light-years away.

The horizon of Earth again, with its clouds and land and water. Home.

The shiny tube of my ship, the Aether. It’s. So. Close. And yet, it can’t save me.

The ISS, Earth, the Aether, and here we go again on this terrible merry-go-round— You get the picture. It’s not good. I close my eyes.

I’m tumbling, and I think I’m squirting oxygen from my life-support backpack, which isn’t helping my somersaults. My suit is losing pressure. At least that’s what I guess is causing the fuzz in my brain. It’s hard to think. My vision is narrowing, dimming, like I’m about to wink away.

And the thing that I think is actually going to kill me? Water is leaking from somewhere inside my suit. Quickly it builds up and clings to my face like a wet rag. It’s a film over my eyes, it plugs my nose, and it slides into my mouth like alien slime whenever I try to cough. I shake my head violently to jiggle the liquid free, so hard that a nerve cries out in my neck. The head-whip kinda works, and I’m able to suck in a tiny breath. I choke down some water and, though the idea sounds ludicrous, I think, Am I going to drown . . . in space?

At this point, you might be asking, “What is a twelve-year-old doing in space?”

And I’d say, “That’s what you’re worried about? Not that I’m going to die?!”

It’s cool. Let me answer both questions. Why I’m one of the first kids in space, and how I ended up in this mess, adrift from my craft and about to become a permanent orbiting satellite. If I don’t plunge into the atmosphere and burn up first.

I’ll pause my death scene to explain a bit about how I got here. Because that’s a thing, right? Aren’t you curious how I got into this impossible quagmire? It’s a pretty amazing story. And 100 percent true.

The books I tend to enjoy reading are about kids being brave, or learning how to be, and I’d like to tell you this is one of those. But I’m not feeling it right now.

To be fair, in those books the kids are fighting fantasy monsters that disappear into dust when you stab them, or they’re in a simulation, or a video game, or you kind of know everything’s going to be all right, right? It’s fake danger.

This story is different. This one’s real. I honestly don’t know how I’m going to survive this. Adrift in space with my oxygen running low, all alone, spinning uncontrollably, a water leak in my suit threatening to drown me.

It all started innocently enough when a harmless package arrived in the mail . . .

Review

New Orleans, the home of voodoo, gators, and murder.

Andi Anna is a travel agent in Florida with an overzealous ex-stepmother and a brilliant assistant in her business. When she books a client on a trip to New Orleans, and the client ends up dead, she somehow gets roped into traveling there to figure out what happened.

This is the second book in this series, and I have enjoyed both. Andi Anna can’t help herself and stumbles across clues, and the killer, perhaps a little too often. She does manage to put herself in harm’s way, but not by choice. Luckily, she has some good people on her side that come to her rescue.

The mystery is well written, and while you might guess who the killer is, it isn’t an obvious answer. But there are enough clues to point you in the right direction if you are able to pick up on them.

Andi Anna’s ex-stepmother, Ruby, is the kind of woman you can’t miss. She manages to insert herself into situations and other people’s lives whether they want her there or not. She definitely tests Andi Anna’s patience. Her assistant, Ellie, adds to the story, and it helps that her family lives in the New Orleans area and is able to help out Andi Anna when she needs it the most.

We don’t see a lot of the police detective from Mexico that she met in the first book. However, I think that might change in book three.

This is a fun series, and I look forward to Andi Anna’s next adventure. We give this book 4 paws up.

Synopsis

In 1991, Eddie Romano, an undersized, unconfident kid, finds an antique baseball glove while on a treasure hunt of the ruins of the old Comiskey Park in Chicago.

Instantly that glove becomes his obsession. While sleeping at night, he’s transported to a dreary, decrepit ballpark where he learns the game of baseball from Billy, a skillful young ballplayer, who seems to be under the control of a dark, sinister figure who calls himself, “The Manager.”

Miraculously, Eddie becomes a better ballplayer and is rewarded for anti-social behavior by having his skills improve. As his bad attitude causes him to lose more and more friends on his team, he starts receiving phone calls from legendary baseball players Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig who attempt to steer his behavior in the complete opposite direction.

Excerpt

Eddie held his glove against his heart and quickly fell into a deep sleep. He began to dream. Numerous faces flashed through his mind until he was staring up at the most handsome one he’d ever seen. This must be a dream. Suddenly, this handsome, young man spoke to him.

“Eddie. Eddie. Wake up. You’re here!” the handsome man in an old-fashioned Chicago White Sox uniform said.

“Where?” Eddie asked, confused.

“You’re here with me at the ballpark.”

Eddie sat up and looked around curiously at the abandoned stadium. The actual field was very well manicured, but the building itself was weathered with age. It looked like it must have been a real nice place at one-time, but somebody forgot to keep it up.

“Who are you?” Eddie asked in amazement.

“I’m your coach. I’m your dream coach.”

“A dream coach?” Eddie asked, now utterly fascinated.

“I’ve been waiting an awfully long time for you, Eddie. So, you’re the boy who found my glove. Do you mind if I look at it?”

“No, but you’re going to give it back, right?”

“Yeah. Of course.”

“Well, in that case, here,” Eddie said as he stood and tossed his “magical glove” to his dream coach.

“Wow. It hasn’t changed a bit since the last time I saw it.”

“It hasn’t?” Now Eddie worried. “Please tell me you don’t want to take it back.”

“No. It’s yours to keep, Eddie. I’m here just to teach you how to use it. It’s magical.”

“I knew it.” Eddie gloated. “So, you’re going to teach me how to control the magic. You’re going to be my new best friend, aren’t you?”

“That’s right. Now, here take your glove back,” the dream coach said, handing it to Eddie.

“Well, the field looks nice, but the rest of the place is a dump. Do you live here?”

“Yes.”

“Are you by yourself?”

The dream coach sighed. “For the moment, but that won’t always be the case.”

“Where do you sleep?”

“I don’t. Well, occasionally I do.”

“That’s not what I asked. Where do you sleep?”

“Oh, I sleep sometimes on the roof of the dugout and other times on the grass of the field.

Don’t you love the smell of freshly cut grass?”

Eddie sniffed. “Yes. I do.” He looked up at the overcast sky. “It seems awfully dreary. It must be depressing to live here. Where’s the sun?”

“I don’t know. I never see it.”

“Well, how do you tell day from night?”

“Your guess is as good as mine. Look, I can’t waste any more time with this chit-chat because, you see, I’ve got a job to do. I’m supposed to teach you how to play baseball like a professional. Would you like to learn?”

Eddie grinned. “There’s nothing I’d enjoy more than learning how to be a great ballplayer. I just hope you realize I’m going to be a real project. I absolutely love the game, but I’m not very good at it. Maybe you could change that for me.”

“Well, that’s what I’m here for. That’s why they pay me the big bucks.” He looked toward the dugout.

“I thought nobody was here with us.”

“Believe me, when I tell you, nobody is.”

“Can I ask you a question?”

“Sure. Fire away.”

“Are you with the spirit inside my glove?”

Dumbfounded, the dream coach asked, “What spirit are you talking about?”

“The one that says someday I’m going to be a professional baseball star,” Eddie said.

“Oh, that spirit. Well, I guess I am then,” The dream coach replied. Oh, my God, he’s just a child. This whole situation is beneath contempt. Now he felt despicable about playing a role in this corruption.

“Well, then I’d like to thank you and your friend inside my glove for helping me. You both are obviously going above and beyond the call of duty when it comes to making my life so much better. Since I can’t communicate with the spirit inside my glove directly, could you please pass on my kind words? I would forever be in your debt if you could.”

“Sure,” the dream coach said, fighting off the nausea welling up inside. “It’s time for your baseball lesson, okay?”

“Alright. I don’t envy you though, because I’m afraid I really stink at the game.”

“I’ll see what I can do about that. Well, where should I begin? I guess I’ll try to improve your hitting.”

Eddie and his dream coach worked on lots of fundamentals of hitting and fielding until Mrs. Romano banged loudly on Eddie’s bedroom door. The startling noise shocked Eddie back to reality. Suddenly he was swept away from that field of play back to his familiar bedroom.

“Wow! What a trip.” Eddie could hardly believe what had just happened.

He looked into my eyes with something that could only be described as desperation. Suddenly, his look of despair faded as if a veil was lifted from his face. He stopped speaking and stood straight. His hands stopped moving, and he looked at each of them, turning them over, back to palm, as he examined them. He raised his head back to my eyes. As he looked at me, in an instant, the fearful look drained from his face, replacing it, a blank, expressionless gaze took hold of his features. He moved his eyes to my hand on his bicep, then shifted his gaze back to my face. He slowly twisted his arm from my slight grasp. He spoke slowly and methodically.

“No, Cash didn’t call. No one called. There was nothing from Cash.”

“But you just said…”

“I didn’t say anything. Nothing,” he said as he turned and faced the rear of the lot.

Interview with Sean

Thanks for the interview, Sean! Your book, THE CODE, sounds absolutely awesome. Can you tell us the story behind that intriguing title?

Sean: The title comes from a best selling publication from way back in 1838. The Code, the Noah Parks work, as with my prior books, is a murder mystery, but the foundation for the reason behind the murders goes back to the ideas in the 1838 book. I came across the 1838 book in some reading I was doing after The Solicitor, my second book, was released, and that started the basis for the plot that would become my third book.

Can you tell us a little about your main characters?

Sean: There are three main characters in The Code that are consistent throughout all of my mysteries.

Noah Parks – he is a Charleston, South Carolina attorney who has been practicing law for several years during the period of the events in The Code. An early morning phone call from a relative of one of his clients that sets in motion the story that is The Code. Noah doesn’t set out to be a detective and I would say he does not consider himself a detective, but is always curious to get to the bottom of a mystery.

Austin – he is Noah’s Australian Shepherd. In The Code, he was just adopted and has been living with Noah for about six months. He was a mainstay in my prior two books, and as I was researching The Code, I found some intriguing historical ties to canines, so it was logical to work those into the plot with Austin. As well, every character has a back story, and The Code starts Austin’s.

Emmett Gabriel – or Gabriel as he is known, is a Charleston Police officer. He has just been made a detective, and the murders in The Code are his first major cases. Gabriel and Noah, even though they grew up in Charleston, had never met prior to being randomly assigned as roommates at The University of South Carolina. They became fast friends and remain so.

Where is your book set and why did you choose that particular location?

Sean: The Code, like all of my books, is set primarily in Charleston, South Carolina. I’ve lived in the area for most of my life and love the city. It was logical for me to use it as the setting for my books. Unlike my first two books, The Trust and The Solicitor, which have scenes in other parts of the South Carolina coast, The Code occurs entirely in the Holy City as Charleston is known.

What part would you say was the most exciting to write?

Sean: It is tough for me to isolate any one part of the book as y favorite, though there are several scenes with Austin that I really enjoyed, Noah’s scenes, as the book is in first person, are always fun to create as well. I enjoyed the final scenes with Noah that began to close the book. However, the most two enjoyable things about the writing process for The Code were the research that allowed me to begin to craft the plot and, since The Code is a prequel, it was tremendously enjoyable seeing the character’s back story develop.

What’s next for you?

Sean: I became fascinated with the research behind The Code. Being able to have the historical underpinning and foundation that creates a mystery within a mystery was something that I really enjoyed. As a result, I have another idea I am researching that will be the next Noah Parks book. No title as of yet, but it will follow next in time after The Code.

Guest Review by Nora

An absolutely stunning story that brings the reader in from the very first page!

‘Hunterland,’ by Dana Claire is unlike anything that I have ever read before. And I’ve read a lot of books. From the very beginning, I had no idea where this story was headed and once, I figured it out, I knew I was going to enjoy it!

This story is a YA paranormal romance, but even if you don’t normally enjoy that type of book, I think you will like this. Told from duel POVs, ‘Hunterland,’ is the story of one young man and one young woman who join forces to fight an unspeakable evil.

Liam Hunter is a trained professional. That is, at 18, he has faced down so many supernatural creatures that he’s lost count. And he has won every fight. With his father, who poses as an FBI agent, and his younger sister, the Hunter family is a monster-hunting crew who protect our world from evil without us even knowing it.

At the beginning of this story, he arrives in a small town called Falkville Falls, that is being plagued by a supernatural creature that is killing nurses. Also in town is Olivia Davis, a local girl who unwittingly becomes involved in the investigation. As the daughter of a police officer, Olivia is used to investigations, but this one is a whole different situation and when she meets Liam, her world is completely turned upside down.

These two have to work together despite their immediate dislike for one another and find a way to stop the monster that is killing innocent people and may be after Olivia herself.

This was a five-star novel for me and one that I could see myself reading again and again! I loved the chemistry between Liam and Olivia’s characters and found their romance very cute. This is a must read! I also think is would be a great book to become a feature movie, on the big screen!

Excerpt

Anger prickled down my arms, and I curled fists by my sides, flexing until veins pushed against my skin. They’d killed an innocent girl, leaving a body no parent should have to bury.

“Shall we teach them a thing or two?” Dad asked, voice thick with the same rage simmering inside me. He handed me a stake from his crossbody bag.

“With pleasure, old man.” My fingers curled around the weapon’s hilt.

The vamp to the right went for Dad. He moved fast, but Dad jumped clear of his grasp. The other vamp charged me, and anticipation coiled my muscles and sharpened my vision. I waited till the last possible moment, then leaped into a spinning kick, burying my heel in the vamp’s gut. I heard the spike Dad installed in the heel of my shoe spring free on impact, and the vamp reeled backward, clutching the hole I’d gored in his side.

He howled but shot right back up. I rarely played with my prey, but knowing we’d been seconds away from saving that poor, desecrated girl ate at me. I’d make him suffer as she’d suffered.

The vamp slashed at me with his talons, but I dipped under his arm and whirled, slamming my left fist into his face. My knuckles burned, but it was worth it. He swayed like a drunkard, dazed.

“Stop screwing around,” Dad ordered between heavy breaths. “Let’s end this.”

“With pleasure,” I said, grinning.

In today’s world, law enforcement agencies across the country rely on forensic tools, DNA testing, and crime labs. But what if that technology was suddenly no longer available? No one in the small, west Texas town of Shadow Ridge knows what took down the power grid, or when it’s going to be back up, but everyone knows exactly where they were the moment it went down. And now, with no electricity, no internet, and no modern technology, the men and women responsible for keeping the town safe are going to have to learn how to fight crime all over again.

When one of the men in charge of storing food for the town of Shadow Ridge is found murdered execution style, it’s up to Jace McQuaid to find the killer. What he discovers is a group of organized raiders who are stealing supplies and selling them on the black market—and the survival of the town depends on stopping them.

Morgan Addison’s estranged brother, Ricky, shows up at her house demanding weapons and confirming her fears that he’s a part of the outlaws. Tensions are raised further when Ricky kidnaps her son to ensure his safe passage out of town. Jace must find a way to save Noah and ensure the survival of Shadow Ridge.

“…sometimes we have to put aside our regrets and create something new with what we have right in front of us.”

This was a fantastic story, and there are still four more books to continue the story! I saw a line that read, “Welcome to Shadow Ridge, where Longmire meets Jericho,” which is spot on. Set in West Texas, this sleepy town is dealing with the aftermath of an EMP. We take a lot for granted in this world, especially electricity and the internet, but imagine a life without those things. I don’t know about anyone else, but it would drastically adjust how I live. I would also have to learn new skills, such as growing vegetables, to survive. I had to admire how this little town came together. They shared information on how to do different things, bartered for their skills, and watched out for one another. Not everyone was honest, but the majority were.

Besides learning how to live in this new world, there is also learning how to cope with what life has thrown at you. Jace feels lost and isn’t sure that God is there for him. I thought the conversation between him and the pastor, Matthew, was perfect and reminded us that we need to look for blessings in unusual places. It won’t always be obvious; we just have to have faith. This is a Christian Suspense novel, but the religious parts are subtle. I think many could relate to how Jace and others feel in this new world and that this isn’t what they had planned for their lives. We all must change and adapt when it is a situation beyond our control.

This novel is fast-paced, and I wondered what could happen next. There are explosions, deaths, surprise defections, and even a little romance. There is even humor from Morgan’s six-year-old son, Noah. He is delightful and adds some levity to the situation. Plus, he heartily approves of Jace as a love interest for his mom. That is good because Jace and Morgan have an attraction to one another, but will they give in to their feelings?

We aren’t given all of the answers, and there are four more books that will explain the story even further. I can’t wait to read these books to discover the rest of the story and perhaps the explanation for what caused the power grid failure. Was it an EMP or something else?

A fantastic start to this series, and we give it 5 paws up.
