Review

Not everyone is as they seem.  Talk about some surprises at the end of the book that will shake your beliefs about some of the characters.

I love these shorter cozies, lots of action and mystery to keep you guessing.  But just because it is shorter don’t count the book out because a lot happens and it will keep you guessing as to who is the killer, why, and what other secrets will be revealed.

I do have a love/hate relationship with Jolie, the protagonist.  Yes, she has her issues and she admits them, but she also does some really stupid things…like when someone is breaking into her house (picking the lock), she yells that the police are on their way.  Ummm, why not just let the police arrive and catch them in the act and arrest them?  But she has a very caring side of her when it comes to Mirabelle, a young woman with sight issues, and others around town.

I was very surprised when it came time to reveal the killer.  I was not expecting this character in the slightest.  It made sense and there are a few clues that might point you this way, but not many.

Overall we enjoyed this book and give it 4 paws up.

Recipe

Indian Spiced Roasted Potatoes

Turner learned this recipe from his Indian grandmother and makes it for a breakfast special.

Ingredients

  • 3½ tablespoons canola oil, divided
  • 3 pounds small red potatoes, cut into inch
  • cubes, or halved if very small (about 8 cups)
  • 1¾ teaspoons dark mustard seeds
  • 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
  • 2 tablespoons minced peeled fresh ginger
  • 4 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1½ teaspoons coarse salt
  • 1 teaspoon ground turmeric
  • ½ teaspoon garam masala
  • ½ cup chopped fresh cilantro (optional)
  • ½ cup chopped fresh mint
  • 1 tablespoon fresh lime juice

Directions

Preheat oven to 400 degrees F. Oil a rimmed baking sheet.

Toss the potatoes with one tablespoon oil and set aside. (Note: Robbie cuts the potatoes smaller and parboils them the night before, so they won’t need as long to cook in the morning, but that step isn’t necessary.)

Heat remaining 2½ tablespoons oil, mustard seeds, and cumin seeds in a large skillet over medium-high heat; cook one and a half minutes or until seeds begin to pop. Reduce heat to medium-low. Add ginger and garlic to pan; cook one minute, stirring constantly. Stir in salt, turmeric, and garam masala; cook one minute, stirring constantly. Add spice mixture to potatoes, tossing to coat. Arrange potato mixture in a single layer on the baking sheet.

Roast for thirty minutes, stirring every ten minutes, or until potatoes are browned and tender. Stir in cilantro, mint, and juice before serving. Serve the cilantro separately if some of your diners don’t like it.

Review

What a way to start a new series – red herrings galore, hidden killers, and mysterious motives.  All of these lead to an unexpected ending.

Exotic pet sitter – someone has to do it and Belinda is up to the task.  While we learn a little bit about her past, she seems quite happy not being stuck in a traditional type job and is building up a pet sitting business for those pets that traditional pet sitters may not want to take on, like a ball python snake.  I can’t even imagine taking care of  snake, but I suppose it helps that Belinda’s father is a veterinarian and she probably grew up around various types of animals.

Belinda has just moved into a cottage on a larger estate in Greenwich and she is barely there a day when she discovers a dead body.  Most people would probably move out faster than the Energizer Bunny, but she takes it all in stride and starts to investigate alongside Stone the Fifth, the son of the manor.  I was surprised at how quickly Stone and Belinda seemed to connect to start investigating the murder, it seemed like that part of the story was rushed.  That said, Stone and Belinda make a great team and play well off of each other around potential suspects and witnesses.

Speaking of suspects….I think I briefly suspected the killer but not long enough for this character to stay in the “guilty box”.  In fact, I strongly suspected another character and was taken by surprise when the ending came about and the killer was revealed.  The author does a great job of throwing multiple characters under the bus as suspects and hiding the true one.

There is a little bit of potential romance between Belinda and Stone, but there is also another character, Jonas, that might come into play as well.  However, Jonas lives by her parents in upstate New York so not sure how that might work out considering the distance…but guess we will find out in the next book!

Overall we enjoyed this book and look forward to the second in this series.  We give this 4 paws up.

Excerpt

I want him to kiss me

Maybe she should kiss him.

Must. Not.

She arched into him, pressing against him as night settled gently around them.

He started this. Why shouldn’t I finish it?

Her stare locked with his as she lifted her chin the last few millimeters into kissing range. His breath mingled with hers, light and hungry.

This is a terrible, terrible idea.

But she couldn’t think of anything she would rather do in the whole wide world than be right here, right now, surrounded by this man, crushing her breasts against his chest, about to kiss him.

Her mouth opened slightly. She ran the tip of her tongue across her suddenly dry lips. Time stopped for a long moment, as she fought a losing battle against the desire raging between them.

He tilted his head down in sudden decision, his mouth capturing hers in no uncertain terms. His dynamic presence exploded around her…or maybe that was erotic attraction exploding inside her.

Their kiss was hot and wet, a carnal thing complete with tongues and sucking and groans from deep in her throat that startled the hell out of her. This was no tentative hello, no cautious introduction. This was lust and raw, raging hunger. Apparently, Griffin was as direct about his desires as he was about his opinions.

It made him even more irresistible. He saw what he wanted and went after it. No hesitation, no doubts. It was so damned alpha of him.

She crawled all over him, turned on like mad, doing her best to suck his tonsils out of his throat. His left hand slid down her spine until he gripped her behind, pulling her snug against his groin, making no secret of how turned on he was by her.

She rubbed the junction of her thighs against that promise of sweet, sweet release, relishing the zinging pleasure ripping through her. She wanted sweat and the slap of thrusting bodies, to be filled by his hot flesh, to drive him out of his mind. She actually purred a little in the back of her throat at the thought of it—

Whoa. When did she turn into a cat in heat?

Apparently, when Griffin Caldwell kissed her.

Yeah, but what a kiss.

It was sexual and frank, and frankly fantastic.

And then, just like that, he tore his mouth away from hers. Stumbled back. He jammed his hands in his pockets, and she saw through the fabric they were balled in fists. His face abruptly looked carved from stone, his eyes glacially cold.

The cool, night air swirled around her, damp and misty, chilling her to the bone.

“That’s why women can’t be in the SEALs,” he rasped.

She registered shock first.

Then disappointment.

Dismay.

Rejection.

And then came outrage, flowing fast and hot through her veins.

Had that kiss been all about humiliating her? She’d been ready to leap into bed with him, damn him!

She glared furiously at his shadowed face and said low and angry, “You think because you deign to bestow a kiss upon me, I’m going to collapse at your feet, swooning? You think because I have sexual desires I can’t be a soldier? You think because I find you moderately attractive I can’t keep my mind on the job?” Her voice rose with each question. “Just how freaking shallow do you think I am?”

His mouth clamped shut and she caught the ripple of muscles along his jaw.

“You’re the one who kissed me,” she flung at him. “How shallow does that make you?” As her fury gathered steam, she stepped forward and poked him in the chest. “I don’t think women in the SEALs are the problem, Caldwell. I think misogynistic male chauvinist pigs in the SEALs are the problem.”

“Sherri. Calm down.”

“Don’t tell me to calm down! You keep your hands, and your mouth, and…and,” she fluttered her hands at him, “all those muscles…to yourself, mister. I’m a professional soldier, and I’m here to do a job. You either get on board this train or stay out of my way. Got it?”

“No,” he ground out. “I don’t.”

She glared at him, speechless with anger.

“No matter how fancy you slice it, Sherri, no woman has what it takes to be a SEAL. You’ll never have what it takes. You have no place on the teams and never will.”

There it was. The truth had finally been spoken aloud. The SEALs didn’t want women and would do everything in their power to keep women out. And on a more personal note, he didn’t want her.

Her anger drained away as quickly as it had flared, leaving behind only a dagger of hurt buried to the hilt in her heart.

She said soberly, “What are you going to do when I prove you wrong, Griffin?”

Frustration gleamed in his gaze as clear and bright as Venus hanging low on the horizon.

She continued implacably. “The day of the female SEAL is coming—soon. If not me, then some woman a lot like me, is going to make it past all the obstacles you throw up in her path. Where will that leave you? Will you be in…or out?”

He threw up his hands and turned away from her, but she continued battering at his ramrod stiff back. “Where will that leave you, Griffin? Will you be part of the SEALs then, or will you be obsolete? Are you going to let your prejudice and archaic attitude drive you off the teams?”

He whirled around so fast she lurched back from him reflexively. “My team is my family. My life, dammit.”

He brushed past her, striding away into the darkness. She called after him as he practically ran from her, “Then you’d better get used to the idea of women. We’re coming for you. I’m coming for you, Griffin Caldwell.

Synopsis

What if you could find the love of your life just by reading between the lines?

Single mom Fordham Price is juggling her job at a small publisher, her precocious ten-year-old daughter, and her feisty mother. She wants to find time for men, but after a series of dating disasters, her relationship status is still stuck at single.

As if her macchiato lite wasn’t already overflowing, a co-worker gets pregnant, and Fordham is expected to step in and deliver the company’s latest reality read from the Flowers from the Heart series. She must now supplement her own romantic misadventures with tales of cynical cat-ladies, identical-twin husbands, spunky monks, and countless other web-crawlers.
As she wades through the submissions, she finds one from a widower whose story gives her tingles in all the places she forgot existed. His words draw her in until she finds herself daydreaming about him more than she’d care to admit.

Could she have a love like that, or will her romantic fate be forever bound to her philandering ex-husband?

Review

This book has several aspects that I enjoyed – the multi generations living in the same home, a middle-aged woman trying to wade through the dating pool, and stories of how people met the love of the their life online (that is how I met my husband).  Fordham has a lot going for her despite being divorced and a single mom.  She has a job that she enjoys and has been given a new challenge – filling the shoes of a woman that just left and creating a book with stories of how people met online.  However, the deadline is looming and life keeps getting in the way of progressing very quickly with the book.  She has been told she might be out of a job if this book doesn’t perform well…no pressure!  Her dating life is interesting as it is filled with some guys that aren’t the brightest bulbs.  There is one ray of sunshine, David Prince, the principal at her daughter’s school.

The book has it comedic moments but I thought it was mostly when it involved Dorie, Fordham’s mom, or Whitty, Fordham’s daughter.  Whitty may be 10 but she is quite precocious and not to be taken lightly.  I loved how she was giving her mother fashion advice.  There was something wrong with Whitty when she was born but we don’t know what is wrong until about 1/3 of the way through the book.

While I couldn’t related to Fordham’s situation, I could appreciate what she was going through between work and trying to find a love.  Sometimes I wondered if she was trying too hard.

The book does move at a slower pace than I would have preferred but it was enjoyable all the same.  I do think that there was sometimes too much detail and the story felt bogged down in places.

We give it 3 paws up.

Guest Post

We all have dreams. As a child, mine was to have long polished fingernails, a sparkly diamond ring, a husband, kids, and a puppy. It was my firm belief that my children would be the luckiest on earth because I would love them beyond reason. My only other wish was to be a movie star, admired by all.

We all have dreams that change. As a child I loved movies, especially the ones where sultry, stunning actresses had to do nothing but stand in a room to have every man in sight desire them. Their allure was disarming and enviable and as I got older, I wanted to be one of them. As a teen, it became somewhat painfully obvious that a 5’2”, very bosomy, bottle- blonde was not exactly the ingenue Hollywood was banging down doors to find. I still watched movies with palpable yearning, but as a matter of practicality, I knew I would have to switch gears.

We all have dreams that change us. I went to college because I had no choice but to graduate and be a “something.” I had given up my dreams of being an actress and so I returned to my most organic desire -to be a wife and a mother. My first serious boyfriend didn’t feel ready to comply with my wishes and broke up with me. Shortly after, I met the guy I believed was Mr. Right. He transferred to my school so we could be together. It was all very romantic in the screenplay I was writing in my head.

We all have dreams that work-until they confuse us.  We got married. I went for my MA in English Ed so I could actually be a “something.” I loved words. The problem was I didn’t want to be a teacher or a journalist. I didn’t want to be anything that required punching a time clock or reporting to a boss. I wanted to write movies, but as far as I was concerned those were created in some far-off land by nameless sprites.

We all have dreams that shape us. I got pregnant and realized that being a mother was my truest calling. Except for the pen and paper that beckoned me in the wee hours, I was a mom all the way from colic to toddlerhood and then onto my next pregnancy, and my next pregnancy, and my next pregnancy. All the while, my movies kept me company. They reminded me, while my own marriage was unraveling, that true love was still out there.

We all have dreams that save us. I got divorced. It was a blessing, but destabilizing, nonetheless. I was no longer part of a couple. We divvied up the friends, but I got to keep the videos. The weekends I didn’t have the kids became my nights for take-out and romcoms. I needed to reinforce my childhood notions of love. I started dating, which I found was not the way to secure those notions. The more I dated, the more I needed my movies.

At some point, we all stop dreaming and start doing. One day, my sister said, very matter-of-factly, “just write your movie already.” Really? Maybe she was right. Maybe the only way I could have the love I wanted was to create it myself. I started writing a screenplay and while developing the main conflict, decided to reach out to my first serious boyfriend. I was in NY. He was safely tucked away in Florida. Maybe he would be able to explain why I was relationship-challenged.

We all have dreams that come true. My former boyfriend was now divorced and seemed to have been waiting for my call. We kept in touch and after a few weeks he said he needed to see me. Our time together convinced me to keep writing. Upon the advice of my late, treasured mentor, I novelized my screenplay and LOVE-LINES emerged. My boyfriend moved to NY, proposed, and after a mere dozen years of living together, we got married this past New Year’s Eve.

Keep dreaming.

Book Title: Eternally Artemisia – Some loves, like some women, are timeless
by Melissa Muldoon
Category: Adult Fiction (18+), 312 pages
Genre: Fiction General, Fiction Women
Publisher: Matta Press
Release date: March 2019

Synopsis

They say some loves travel through time and are fated to meet over and over again. For Maddie, an art therapist, who wrestles with the “peculiar feeling” she has lived previous lives and is being called to Italy by voices that have left imprints on her soul, this idea is intriguing. Despite her best efforts, however, proof of this has always eluded her. That is, until one illuminating summer in Italy when Maddie’s previous existences start to bleed through into her current reality. When she is introduced to the Crociani family—a noble clan with ties to the seventeenth-century Medici court that boasts of ancestors with colorful pasts—she finally meets the loves of her life. One is a romantic love, and another is a special kind of passion that only women share, strong amongst those who have suffered greatly yet have triumphed despite it.

As Maddie’s relationship develops with Artemisia Gentileschi—an artist who in a time when it was unheard of to denounce a man for the crime of rape, did just that—Maddie discovers a kindred spirit and a role model, and just what women are capable of when united together.

In a journey that arcs back to biblical days and moves forward in time, Maddie encounters artists, dukes, designers, and movie stars as well as baser and ignoble men. With Artemisia never far from her side, she proves that when we dare to take control of our lives and find the “thing” we are most passionate about, we are limitless and can touch the stars.

Praise for Eternally Artemisia

“A true Renaissance woman, Melissa Muldoon weaves her passions for art and Italy into a stirring saga that sweeps across centuries. As her time-traveling heroine Maddie reconnects with kindred souls, we meet Artemisia Gentileschi, the 17th-century artist who overcame rape and ignominy to gain respect and acclaim. Historic figures such as Galileo and Mussolini also come to life in this intricately plotted novel, but the women who defy all constraints to take control of their destinies are the ones who prove to be eternally fascinating.” — Dianne Hales

What a lovely story! Melissa weaves the lives of 4 women across time, all with some connection to Artemisia Gentileschi, a 16th century Italy painter. They represent the feminine strength that arises from life challenges, each with their unique intelligence. Underlying their stories is the idea that love transcends all, even time, love is timeless. As with her other books, Melissa fills the story out with interesting facts and references to the Italian life, culture and it’s history, her attention to detail is immaculate . I loved all of the many connections in this story that tied it all together, very cleverly done. Wonderful read, I would highly recommend it. – Lize, Amazon Reviewer

Melissa Muldoon does a phenomenal job blending fiction, romance, art history, and the Italian language into this gem. For fans of historical fiction, romance, and time travel, I strongly recommend this novel. –Exemplary Editing, Amazon Review

Interview

What are some of the themes in your new novel Eternally Artemisia?

My third novel “Eternally Artemisia,” like my first two, is set in Italy and tells the story of a woman who is on a journey of self-discovery to find love, uncover hidden truths, and follow her destiny to shape a better future for herself. My protagonist—Maddie—is an art therapist and through art retreats, she leads in Italy, she helps other women through the aftermath of physical violence and rape. But this is just one of the themes of the book. In her professional life, Maddie may deal with the raw aspects of sexual violence, but this doesn’t keep her from believing in the power of love. Deep down inside she maintains there can be loves so poignant and profound the people who experience this deeply personal connection are destined to meet over and over again. This feeling is further fueled by Maddie’s childhood fantasies of time travel, and all through her life she wrestles with the “peculiar” feeling that she has lived past lives.

As the story unfolds in a villa in Tuscany just outside of Montepulciano, Maddie begins to connect with these previous existences and discovers the loves of her life. She establishes a bond with Matteo Crociani a nobleman from the Court of Cosimo II de’ Medici in Florence, as well as with the seventeenth-century artist Artemisia Gentileschi who was raped by her painting instructor at the age of sixteen. But Artemisia survived this horrendous event and went on to become the first prominent female artist of her generation. Still, today, she continues to be an influencer and a source of inspiration—not only because of her talent but by her courage to persevere despite great odds.

Eternally Artemisia” celebrates the idea that when a woman dares to take control of her destiny and find the thing she is most passionate about, she discovers she is limitless and will transcend the scope of time.

What was the biggest mental/writing challenge you faced along the way while writing this book?

“Eternally Artemisia” is an intricately plotted novel that blends the past with the present and like my first two novels, I bring to life contemporary protagonists as well as historical characters from the seventeenth century. Since the story weaves together many ideas, it was quite a challenge to balance them all and keep all the many threads of my story from tangling.

First and foremost, I wanted to communicate Artemisia’s story—but I wanted her to speak to my reader’s in her own voice. To do so, I needed to bring her to life as a fully-fledged character living in her own time. I also wanted to create a contemporary character—my twenty-first protagonist Maddie—who could speak to the problem of violence against women in the modern age as well as the restorative powers of art therapy. So, to keep the reader moving through different centuries to the present age, I introduce the theme of time travel. I explore the idea that people who are intensely connected are destined to meet over and over again over time. With each new re-incarnation, they meet for the first time and recognize one another instinctively.

It was a challenge and a joy, not only to develop and flush out Artemisia’s character as a sympathetic protagonist but also to create the different versions of Maddie to fit the various periods she inhabits throughout the book. She assumes the personalities of an Art Therapist, a fashion designer, a Venetian courtesan, and several other personas—but always her character takes the form of a strong, inspirational woman, who draws her courage from Artemisia’s role model.

Do you ever get writer’s block—how do you deal with it and overcome it?

I believe what people generally refer to as writer’s blocks, really boils down to this: simply not knowing what you want to communicate in the first place. A writer becomes stuck, because he has nothing new to say, or perhaps he is intimidated by the act of putting words down on paper, for fear of making an error.

As I’m quite a voracious writer and am constantly brainstorming, researching, reading and creating stories in my head, I don’t often let myself get bogged down by “writer’s block.” If I do happen to get confounded by a plot twist, I deal with it by going on long walks, listening to good music and meditating in order to center myself. I figure out—or remember—what is the point or big idea I want to convey and then I’m able to continue on.

As I continue moving forward, I keep asking myself at every point in the story, what do my readers need to know next. That always seems to answer the question of how I should proceed with my next chapter and keeps my story flowing until the very last word. I remind myself, the important thing is to get thoughts down on paper, even if sometimes they seem a bit jumbled. I remind myself I can always fix a badly written paragraph, but I can’t fix one that isn’t written.

What is the best piece of advice you’ve ever received, about writing, or about life in general?

In regard to writing the best advice I’ve received is: Write without fear… Edit without mercy.

In regard to life: She believed she could, so she did.

Do you have any advice for aspiring authors?

Writing a novel is hard work and requires a lot of time and dedication to the craft. But first you have to have a highly creative and unique idea that only you can tell in your own way and in your own words. To successfully complete a novel, you must have the ability to disassociate yourself from your work and critically review what you have written, in order to tear apart your work over and over again to make it better. It also takes a thick skin to accept criticism and the willingness to correct your work when you go off the rails.

I came across a quote from JK Rowling the other day which resonated with me: You have to resign yourself to the fact that you waste a lot of trees before you write anything you really like, and that’s just the way it is. It’s like learning an instrument, you’ve got to be prepared for hitting wrong notes occasionally, or quite a lot.

I love the analogy. For me it is true that writing a novel is a lot like learning a new instrument. Right off the bat, you can’t expect to play a Mozart Sonata if you’ve never played a piano before. The same is with a novel. You start with a big idea and after the first flush of creative writing is over and you have finished your first draft, the real work begins as you start the editing and rewriting and embellishing the story. During the rewrite you are composing and practicing over and over again the key notes of your symphony that in the end make it rich and melodic.

About the Author

Melissa Muldoon is the author of three novels set in Italy: “Dreaming Sophia,” “Waking Isabella,” and “Eternally Artemisia.” All three books tell the stories of American women and their journeys of self-discovery to find love, uncover hidden truths, and follow their destinies to shape a better future in Italy.

Melissa is also the author of the Studentessa Matta website, where she promotes the study of Italian language and culture through her dual-language blog written in Italian and English (studentessamatta.com). Studentessa Matta means the “crazy linguist” and has grown to include a podcast, Tutti Matti per l’Italiano and the Studentessa Matta YouTube channel, Facebook page and Instagram feed. Melissa also created Matta Italian Language Immersion Programs, which she co-leads with Italian schools in Italy to learn Italian in Italy. Through her website, she also offers the opportunities to live and study in Italy through Homestay programs. Melissa has a B.A. in fine arts, art history and European history from Knox College, a liberal arts college in Galesburg, Illinois, as well as a master’s degree in art history from the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana.

She has also studied painting and art history in Florence. She is an artist, designer, and illustrated the cover art for all three of her books. Melissa is also the managing director of Matta Press. As a student, Melissa lived in Florence with an Italian family. She studied art history and painting and took beginner Italian classes. When she returned home, she threw away her Italian dictionary, assuming she’d never need it again, but after launching a successful design career and starting a family, she realized something was missing in her life. That “thing” was the connection she had made with Italy and the friends who live there. Living in Florence was indeed a life-changing event. Wanting to reconnect with Italy, she decided to start learning the language again from scratch. As if indeed possessed by an Italian muse, she bought a new Italian dictionary and began her journey to fluency—a path that has led her back to Italy many times and enriched her life in countless ways. Now, many dictionaries and grammar books later, she dedicates her time to promoting Italian language studies, further travels in Italy, and sharing her stories and insights about Italy with others. Melissa designed and illustrated the cover art for Eternally Artemisia, Waking Isabella, and Dreaming Sophia.

She also curates the Dreaming Sophia Art History blog site and Pinterest site: The Art of Loving Italy, where you will find companion pictures for all three books. Visit MelissaMuldoon.com for more information about immersion trips to learn the language with Melissa in Italy, as well as the Studentessa Matta blog for practice and tips to learn the Italian language.

Review

This was a good start to a new series about a woman from Hawaii that takes a job in Nebraska….now you have to be thinking like I was…are you kidding?  WHY?!  But later in the book, we learn why and the support she had to make the move to advance her career.  Of course, things aren’t going quite as she would have expected when a student is found dead on campus.  This book tells the journey of trying to solve the murder, keep her job, and stay alive.  Yes, you read that right, stay alive.  She has a stalker that means business.

This book is very detailed and I thought the author did a good job on character development and providing just enough information to keep the reader engaged but not so much detail that a reader might lose interest.  The mystery surprised me a little bit at the end but not too much.  There was something about this character that just stood out to me but I didn’t know this character was also the killer.  Just seemed like there was something off.

I felt for Cassandra and the prejudice she ran into in the smaller town of Carson, Nebraska.  Yes, she was different than the rest of the town but you would have hoped they would have embraced her and welcomed her diversity.  Perhaps in future books.

The book did seem to move at a slower pace until the end where it really picked up steam until the killer was revealed.  There are some comedic moments especially when she visits the farm to check on the cows wearing a suit and heels.  Someone should have told her to change clothes or at least shoes.

There are some potential love interests for Cassandra should she choose to let loose and live a little and not focus so much on her career.  Sure the career is important but so is living life.

The only strange thing I noted when reading this book was when Cassandra would slip into this Creole dialect.  I didn’t know that there was such a dialect as Hawaiian Creole but apparently so.  Some of the phrases were odd, especially when she mentioned getting “chicken skin”.  I can only assume she was referring to what most of us might call “goosebumps” but she did use goosebumps in the book so not really sure what she meant.  There is also 1 f* bomb in the book which surprised me as that is not a word commonly used in a cozy.

Overall we enjoyed the book and we give it 3 1/2 paws.

About the Author

Kelly Brakenhoff is an American Sign Language Interpreter whose motivation for learning ASL began in high school when she wanted to converse with her deaf friends. As an American Sign Language Interpreter with more than twenty years of experience, Kelly’s worked in college classrooms for fifteen different majors. From traipsing across muddy farm fields to stomach-churning medical procedures, and stage interpreting for famous figures, Kelly’s community interpreting interactions number in the thousands. Unfortunately, once she’s stepped away from the job, she usually forgets 90% of what happened. Which helps her keep confidential information safe, but also makes it really hard to grocery shop for more than 5 items without a written list.

Kelly wants to live in a world filled with peace, love, and joy, where people who can hear learn enough sign language to include deaf people in everyday conversations and work. Where every deaf child has early access to language and books with characters like them, and dark chocolate is cheap and plentiful.

When she’s not interpreting or writing, you can find Kelly cheering for her favorite Husker teams or training for half-marathons because she really likes dessert.

Her first mystery, Death by Dissertation, released April 22, 2019.

In the new Bay Island Psychic Mystery, psychic Cass Donovan is thrown into the middle of a macabre murder she never saw coming . . .

Desperate to help her friend prove his innocence and consumed by haunting visions, Cass follows the clues from one possible culprit to the next, including some very mysterious tourists and not a few questionable locals. Bay Island

The Bay Island Psychic Mystery series takes place on a small island nestled between the north and south forks of Long Island, New York. Although Bay Island is a fictional setting, it shares many characteristics with Long Island. The small farms Cass passes, the actual town of Bay Island, the beaches, and the lighthouses can be found throughout many small towns all over Long Island. Even the old, abandoned Madison Estate, a haunted mansion that makes an appearance in Death at First Sight but becomes the main focus of book two, Occult and Battery, is reminiscent of several old abandoned houses scattered across Long Island.

Like Long Island, Bay Island depends heavily on the tourist trade and the weekend visitors who fill the Long Island Rail Road cars and the Long Island Expressway every weekend all summer long. Unfortunately, come winter, tourists and weekend residents don’t visit as frequently, making the winter months more difficult for local business owners.

Because of its dependence on tourism, Bay Island is more impacted by the seasons than many areas, and each book in the series takes place during a different season. Each season brings its own, unique circumstances, which have a tremendous impact on the characters and the plot.

Book one, Death at First Sight, takes place during the fall, while tourists still visit and strangers in town are not uncommon. Traditions that are common to Long Island are mentioned throughout the story, such as driving out east on the north shore and visiting local farm stands for roasted corn and apple cider, apple picking, and pumpkin picking. The crunch of dead leaves beneath Cass’s feet becomes a major obstacle to overcome.

Book two, Occult and Battery, takes place during the winter. In an effort to increase her income when the tourist trade dies off, Cass sets up a psychic weekend, complete with séance, in the old, abandoned Madison Estate. Then a blizzard blows in, stopping ferry service to Bay Island, knocking out the electricity, and trapping Cass and her guests in the supposedly haunted mansion with a killer. The storm plays a major role in the plot, leaving behind deep snow, icy roads, and cutting Bay Island off from the rest of the world until ferry service can be restored. Even Cass’s dog, Beast, is affected by the snow, as Cass has to put off his much needed training until spring.

The third book in the series takes place in the spring, when tourists start to return to Bay Island and business finally starts to pick up. Shop owners begin to prepare for the mad rush of summer, and a new art gallery opens on the boardwalk. But the beaches are not yet crowded, as they will be during the summer months, so when strange things start happening while Cass is walking down the beach to Mystical Musings, no one is around to help. And when she and Beast stumble across a body in the dunes, Cass is on her own.

In the newest Bay Island Psychic Mystery, Spirited Away, summer has arrived on Bay Island, bringing throngs of tourists and a heat wave just as Cass’s air conditioning unit goes on the fritz. With everyone on edge because of the heat, Cass’s group reading goes drastically wrong, and one of her good friends ends up accused of murder.

The Bay Island Mystery series relies heavily on the seasons and the unique situations brought about by being set on an island that is close to civilization, relies heavily on the tourist trade, and yet is only accessible by ferry.

Review

This book is more than teenage angst – it is about hope, forgiveness, perseverance, friendship, and love.

This may be a YA book but it spoke to me and I raced through this book like there was no tomorrow. The story flowed well, the characters were flawed yet real, and it shed some light on Lupus.

Kane is goofy and Summer is reserved but finds what Kane has to offer might be exactly what she needs. I appreciated that the characters weren’t rushing into anything, mostly because of Summer’s disease and her reservations, but that they took time to get to know each other. The relationship is not smooth sailing but it was real and honest.

I also liked Matt and Abigail, good friends to the end. I’m hoping we get to see stories for each of them in the future.

This book had me laughing at times and is worth the read.

We give it 5 paws up.
