Gift Ideas for the Ones Who Have Everything

by: Dianna Houx, author of Countdown to Christmas

It’s the most wonderful time of the year, and as a fan of countdowns, I can confidently say you only have sixteen days left till the big day! Are you ready? Are you one of those people who starts their Christmas shopping in July, has the decorations up before Thanksgiving, and is currently relaxing by the fire with a glass of wine without a care in the world? Or, are you like me, with no decorations up, no gifts, and downing the whole bottle of wine as you panic over your to-do list that seems to get longer as the days until Christmas get shorter?

Do you dread buying gifts? Have that one family member or friend who already has everything but still expects a present under the tree? Or are you stuck participating in your workplace gift exchange and had the misfortune of drawing your boss’s name? Or the one co-worker’s name who always sports the latest phone, designer clothing, and fancy car despite allegedly making the same salary as you?

If the answer to any of the above questions is a resounding YES!, don’t worry, I’ve got you covered. Now, you could go the easy route and grab a gift card to some store or restaurant, but that leaves you in the sticky situation of choosing an amount. Too little, and people think you’re cheap, too much, and you could easily blow your entire gift budget on one person. No one wants to tell little Timmy he didn’t get the Playstation 5 he’d been begging for all year because ‘Santa’ gave Mr. Bossman a five hundred dollar subscription to the Brandy of the Month club!

Then there’s the personalized gift route, e.g., someone’s name or face on a coffee mug, pillowcase or, blanket, etc. Most people consider these novelty gifts, and while they could be fun, they’re often expensive, take time to ship/arrive, and usually end up in the back of someone’s closet or kitchen cupboard. However, if the goal is to give someone something they can’t re-gift, this could be a good option!

Another option is to donate to a charity in someone’s name. This is a good option if you’re short on time and money, as most places will accept donations online, and you don’t have to put an amount on the gift notice. This one may not be well-received, especially if you choose a charity the recipient does not support, but it’s hard for people to complain about donations to charity without looking bad. This could be a good option if you’re desperate and don’t particularly like the person. Not that donations to charities are bad; it’s just that not everyone will appreciate your donation to the ‘Human Fund’ in their name! (Seinfeld reference for all you young’uns!)

If it were me, I would avoid all gifts pertaining to clothes. Personal taste aside, getting the size wrong, which you’re likely to do, is incredibly embarrassing. You don’t want to be cheeky and gift someone a medium-sized sweater who is obviously not a medium, nor do you want to be offensive and give someone an item several sizes too big. A family member once gifted my son a XXXL hoodie, and he still isn’t talking to her! It’s just not worth the risk unless you’re using this as an opportunity to be passive-aggressive toward someone you don’t like. Not that I condone that type of thing, but we all have that one relative. You know, the one who always asks why we aren’t married yet or when we’ll get a ‘real job’ because anything less than doctor or lawyer is an embarrassment to the family name.

In Countdown to Christmas, (which would make a fantastic gift for everyone on your list!), the character Grace makes memory books and gives them to her guests on Christmas. Now, if you’re thinking, “I ain’t got time for that!” I understand, but keep in mind, she only had ten days to make her books, and at last count, you have sixteen. So, not only is this possible, it has the added bonus of no one, and I mean no one, being able to complain. They may not appreciate the gift, but memories are precious and something to be treasured. You don’t even have to fill the book; just take a couple of photos to get it started, and voila, you have a sweet gift from the heart to give to anyone, including the hoarders, wealthy relatives, and horrible bosses in your lives!

I hope this helps relieve some stress this holiday season. Keep in mind most people won’t remember what you gave them once the day has passed. Gifts are not what matters; it’s sharing the holiday with loved ones and making memories that last a lifetime that’s important.

So sit back, relax, and make a few donations to the human fund. Treasure your time with your loved ones, and from my family to yours: Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

True heart’s desire cannot be ignored.

Destynee Olsen has always done what her mother asked, but the road to stardom could mean leaving behind a piece of her heart.

Travis Olsen tries desperately to honor his vow to support his wife. Watching their son grow up without a mother is asking too much and his resentment builds. A marriage alone and single parenting is not what he signed up for.

The line has been drawn between a woman who has been told that her destiny to be a star is more important than she is and a cowboy who refuses to destroy his wife’s dream. Destynee and Travis have to decide what’s important. Can they discover the life they were meant to have at the risk of denying their own hearts?

Praise from Amazon Reviewers

“The dialog brings the story to life, and the stage scenes are intriguing and vivid as Destynee decides just how much fame is worth, and the cost to her heart and family.”

“…an emotional read about a young couple, each trying to survive their marriage. The storyline brings heartache, forgiveness, and reconciliation as God works to bring peace and contentment back to their marriage.”

“Another great read with excellent characters.”

This clean, sweet romance reminds us that what is important in life isn’t fame and fortune but family.

Travis and Destynee were married young and have a son, Wyatt. Destynee’s mother missed out on having a life in the spotlight, so she pushes Destynee in that direction. Now don’t get me wrong, Destynee has a beautiful voice, but her mother is a piece of work. She tells her what to wear, what to sing, and micromanages her entire life. She even keeps Travis away from Destynee by treating her like a young child and taking her phone away, deleting messages and calls. As you can imagine, this causes miscommunication between the couple.

On the road, Destynee begins to question if this is where she wants to be. She misses Travis and Wyatt, and the few times she is able to see them just reinforce what she is missing by traveling and performing. I think many people might question if that is the life for them, especially Destynee, who has a strong belief in family and doing what is right. I began to question how much her mother was profiting off of her daughter, especially when she won’t tell Destynee how much she was making singing or how much she was paying a publicity expert. There are many more red flags, but I can see how Destynee wouldn’t necessarily question her mother based on their relationship and her age.

Travis isn’t perfect either. He isn’t really taking care of Wyatt, but thankfully his mother is making sure that everything is ok. There are issues there that need to be dealt with to ensure a more peaceful family. Relationships are tenuous at times, but communication is what helps bring the family together during the rough patches. But they all support one another, and that is evident when Travis decides to step up his relationship. I won’t say too much because that might spoil it for you!

I enjoyed watching the characters grow. They aren’t perfect, but they learn what it takes to make a relationship and family work. They are even strengthened by their faith.

This was such a good book, and I didn’t realize it was the third in a series. I will definitely go back and check out the first two books.

We give this book 5 paws up.

Synopsis

The annual Sweet Water, Georgia, Christmas parade is nearing but relationships are fractured on Wild Rose Lane. Antique dealer Cheryl Calloway’s holiday spirit has tanked. It’s been a horrible year with her divorce, her ex marrying younger and perkier Miriam across the street, and Mama moving into Cheryl’s Victorian cottage with her Amazon parrot right before Thanksgiving. A party girl in her eighties, Mama smokes up a storm, likes her nightly vodka, has a hankering for men, and now a wingman named Nigel. If that isn’t enough, the Historical Society wants Cheryl to clean up all the projects on her porch waiting to go to Spivey’s Antique Mall for their Christmas Open House. Her desire to work her booth is as dead as her marriage. Miriam, President of the Historical Society, chastises her, “If it ain’t pretty don’t put it on the porch.” Then there’s Alice, her strange neighbor with the six-foot fluorescent light bulb cross nailed to the huge Magnolia tree in the middle of her rose garden. Alice watches all the neighbors too closely. Just when Cheryl thinks things can’t get worse, an incident shakes her to the core, and a mystery follows revealing family secrets long forgotten. Cheryl wants to believe in miracles and love again, and Dr. James may just be the man of her dreams as he helps her and Mama sort things out.

Filled with quirky characters, mystery, family secrets, and sweet love, all set in a hot Georgia small town.

Review

This book will have you laughing and cringing all at the same time.

Cheryl has had a tough year or two, and now her mother has come to live with her and has brought along her pet parrot, Nigel. Mama is definitely one of those people that says and does what she wants no matter what anyone else requests. I love that she even has a romance going with Jackson, a semi-blind resident at the local retirement home. But I love that they don’t care about what others think and do what they want to do.

Cheryl is trying to get her life back together after divorcing her husband, who now lives across the street with his new wife, Miriam. Miriam is a handful and inserts herself into everyone else’s life and doesn’t care what that person thinks or wants. There is also the next-door neighbor, Annie, that is hiding a secret from Cheryl and Mama. We also have Dr. James, aka Jim, whom Cheryl meets, and they have some instant chemistry. He is just what Cheryl needs to move forward with her life.

This book is more than romance and mystery. It is about relationships, family, and the pursuit of happiness. It is sticking up for your family despite how crazy they might make you. I felt drawn to Cheryl and what she was experiencing when it came to her mother and her siblings. She was sort of “stuck” taking their mother in to live with her because she was single. But I think that despite the ups and down, they forged a strong bond with each other, and maybe this won’t be such a bad situation to be in…even with Nigel.

I really enjoyed the relationship dynamics between everyone, and it gave each of the characters depth which only added to the story.

I hope that this becomes a series. I would love to visit Sweet Water again!

We give this book 4 paws up.

Synopsis

Melanie Beck is searching for an idyllic Christmas like the ones her small family used to have. Traveling solo and still grieving the loss of her parents, she’s counting on cozy Tall Pines Lodge tucked into the mountains of Utah to provide the elusive holiday feels with merry music, stunning decorations and traditional Christmas feast in a beautiful frosty setting.

But a blizzard turns the winter wonderland into a hazard, and a chance encounter with a now-famous high school crush has her reeling with emotions she’s never quite gotten over.

Tyler Shaw, a Hollywood heartthrob and silver screen star, is so over a grueling film schedule and persistent paparazzi. In disguise and using a fake name, he comes to Tall Pines to escape the spotlight and get some much-needed rest. He’s hoping the adrenaline rush of downhill skiing at the nearby slopes will give him the reboot he’s looking for.

Instead, he’s stuck at the lodge and is shocked to run into an old high school friend that he left behind more than a decade ago. He’s even more surprised to discover how much he’s missed her.

As their past and present collide, can an old flame ignite some Christmas magic?

Review

Sometimes your first crush is your last crush.

Melanie has been spending Christmas alone for quite a few years, and this year she chose a picturesque resort in Utah. There are lots of fun events scheduled to occupy everyone’s time, but what she didn’t expect was to get snowed in with her high school crush and now famous actor, Tyler Shaw. Now Melanie is nothing to sneeze at, she is a best-selling author, but most people go crazy when they see actors. I personally would be more gaga over the author!

I enjoyed watching the story evolve over a few days and Melanie and Tyler reconnecting while trying to stay out of the spotlight. Of course, that doesn’t always happen, so we get to see how they handle the media response once they are discovered. And as the media is prone to do, they blow everything out of proportion. After all, who would believe the truth? They also have to reconcile over the past and what happened in high school, and how it impacted who they are today. There is also some drama with Tyler’s family and how he feels some sort of responsibility to them. But on the flip side, he realizes after this time away from them that maybe he needs to take a new path in his life.

This is a sweet romance with a little action thrown into the mix. It is a great Christmas read, and it just might put you in the mood for the holidays.

We give this book 5 paws up.

Excerpt

“Also, if you’re having an affair, keep that away from the camera.” His agent cleared his throat and hesitated a beat. “But if this woman is someone special, we can use that to our advantage. What’s the story?”

Tyler’s heart somersaulted.

This woman. He’d talked to Aiden about women before, mostly to enlist his help when things went the way of a three-ring circus in the media. All of a sudden, the topic felt more personal, private. He should’ve hung up ten minutes ago.

“I… She’s…” Damn, what story did he wanted to tell? Of course, she was someone special. Funny how crystal clear that was looking in the rearview mirror. Even in high school she’d been in a league of her own. The missed years weighed heavily on his mind. He had a feeling those years represented missed opportunities.

A low chuckle came across the line, and he wanted to kick himself for stammering around like an idiot.

“Well, well,” Aiden drawled. “This is an interesting development. Who is she?”

“We were friends in high school.”

“Uh-huh. And what are you now?”

Good question. And one he wasn’t sure how to answer. Friends? Potential lovers? A couple? As he considered the possibilities, his pulse skyrocketed.

“Don’t hold out on me, Shaw. I need to know what I’m dealing with.”

He let his glance wander to Annie’s book, and he lifted it from the table. Turning it over, he stared at her smiling face. Blood rushed to his head. He could definitely see himself spending more time with Annie. She was someone he’d be proud to be seen with in public, and someone he could relax with away from the prying public eyes.

But he would not be “using her to his advantage.”

“Aiden,” he warned. “Leave her out of this.”

Excerpt

The room at the inn had a window that faced the Great Tree with the castle by its side. As Andrew gazed through the window at the castle, his mind wandered back to his mother, who was at home sick with the deadly fever. Although she wanted to see her lost son one more time before she passed, she insisted that Andrew not look for him, for it was much too dangerous. She made Andrew promise that he would not venture off and search for his brother. Andrew agreed not to.

Andrew was now looking for his brother, Nicholas, in defiance of his mother’s wishes. He had made up his mind that he could not live with himself if he did not try. He understood his mother’s concern, but he felt he had to do what he thought was right. He lied to his mother out of love for her and because he did not want her worrying about him on his quest. Right or wrong, it was the way he felt about it. Nicholas had been abducted by an evil Sorcerer, an evil wizard of sorts, when they were both very young. Nicholas was his older brother. Andrew had been searching for Nicholas for weeks; he was now at a small mountain village where he had hoped to find Nicholas and bring him back to his mother before she died.

With Jenny at his side, Andrew, weary from his lengthy travels, fell soundly asleep while gazing at the castle in the distance.

It’s Christmas Eve, 1859, and everyone who’s anyone is headed to the glorious St. Nicholas Hotel for the most talked about ball of the season. It’s the kind of Texas night where anything can happen—even love . . .

ONE NIGHT AT THE ST. NICHOLAS by  New York Times and USA Today Bestselling Author Jodi Thomas

To escape her stepmother’s plot to marry her off, Texas heiress Jacqueline Hartman spends Christmas Eve sharing a hideout with an accused bank robber. After a night in Nathaniel Ward’s arms, Jacqueline is certain she has met her match after all. But will his heartfelt promise of love lead to his demise at the hands of the law?

BIRDIE’S FLIGHT by Celia Bonaduce

Seamstress Birdie Flanagan gets the surprise of her life when she receives a beautiful gown—and a sudden invitation—for the ball of the season! Birdie creates a stir from the moment she arrives, capturing the eye of the dashing Captain Douglas Fairbanks. But will a secret from her past keep her from her long-awaited happily-ever-after?

SPIRIT OF TEXAS by  Rachael Miles

When lovely spinster Eugenie Charpentier makes a trip across the Texas frontier with former Texas Ranger Asher Graham, she dreams of an adventure, and the rough-and-tumble cowboy is happy to oblige. But both Eugenie and the rugged lawman are keeping secrets. Can they find each other—and love—on the dance floor at the Christmas ball?

Dallas wasn’t always the bustling metropolis area I know today, and a look back to 1859 sheds new light on how small of a town it really was in the mid-1800s.

I was fascinated by the history of the hotel and I like that the authors chose to center their stories around a real hotel.  I always like reading the notes at the end of a book that talks about the inspiration for the story especially when it is an actual location or real people.  I may live in the DFW area but that doesn’t mean I know all of the histories of this area.  I am constantly learning new things every day and amazed at what I learn.  So if you are someone that doesn’t read the author’s notes, start!

I loved all three of these stories and it is hard for me to choose a favorite.  I think the one that inched its way past the others was Spirit of Texas by Rachael Miles.  I loved the humor and the thesaurus and word references.  It is the book nerd in me.

In all of the stories, each couple finds love quickly and how wonderful it is to see that love shine through no matter the time frame of how it came to be with the couple.  Times were much different than they are today, but I still believe in that initial spark that each of the main characters experienced in each book.  But love is found but there are a few hiccups along the way but it wouldn’t be a good story without some tension and drama especially when it comes to family drama.  While each story isn’t long (approximately 100 pages each), there are complex characters, action, deception, and love.  All the qualities I look for in a book.

I’m not sure how the authors arranged the characters that would be carried over from book to book but I loved seeing glimpses of the same character in a different light.  Even the ball from different perspectives made for interesting twists.  Despite the appearance of characters from story to story, there wasn’t any overlap in details about the ball other than a minute detail here or there.

This is a fun book to read and if you enjoy history, holidays, family drama, and love then this is the book for you.

We give this 5 paws up.
