Review

What a sweet story about a woman that loved animals so much she was willing to give up her restaurant to keep the cats around.

Now you do have to set aside reality and common sense as an adult, but children will love this book especially if they are animal lovers. The story tells of how one woman put the needs of the cats she adored ahead of her restaurant when push came to shove. I think it also might teach them some character skills.

The graphics depict the story well, are very colorful and will hold a child’s attention while reading this story.

We give it 4 paws up!

About the illustrator

Born in Queens, New York and living in Los Angeles since 1987, Sheila Fein has always been inspired by the changing world around her. Earning her BA in Design from Buffalo State College of New York, her concentration was on drawing, painting, printmaking, and photography. Sheila’s education as an artist has taken her everywhere from Fleisher Art Memorial in Philadelphia to Bath University in England. Today, Sheila Fein runs two figurative workshops, Imaginings Sketch in LA and People Sketchers in Thousand Oaks. She has been featured in numerous collections, magazines, books, solo and group exhibitions. Her paintings and drawings reside in public and private collections. A Playlist for My Novel, The Tulip Shirt Murders

Thank you so much for letting me visit today. The Tulip Shirt Murders is the second novel in my Delanie Fitzgerald mystery series. She is my sassy private investigator who zips around Central Virginia in her black Mustang (usually with the radio blaring).

I love music. It has always been a huge part of my life, and I have playlists for reading, writing, editing, and revising. Music is always on at home or work. (As I write this, the Zac Brown Band is blasting on my computer speakers.) I love all kinds of genres, but I seem to gravitate back to songs from the Big ‘80s. Songs from my high school and college days will always be my favorites. And that era plays a huge role in the first novel in my series, Secret Lives and Private Eyes.

“I’m the boss’s son.”

That made no sense. “Margot is the boss.”

He seemed to weigh her answer. “Depends on how you look at it. If you’re talking about the business, yes. That’s Margot’s. But if we’re talking about what brought you here tonight, then Jack works for my father. His line has served ours faithfully for many years. We like Jack.”

Wait. What? Claire knew Ren’s family had served Margot’s for generations, but she’d always thought that more as a bodyguard thing. Jack wasn’t a bodyguard. He was a problem-solver for the elite. 4I didn’t even have to look to know that this was probably going to be trouble. I turned my attention from the interior design of the facility to the man that stood a couple feet away. He wasn’t alone, there were two men that stood right by him. I looked to my left and then to my right, there were a large number of people surrounding me. Well not surrounding me in particular, it was just a large mass of people that seemed to be displaced by the looks of it. They were doing the same thing I was which was nothing in particular.

“Hey you I asked you a question.  Don’t ignore me boy.” The same gruff voice said.

It was the man that I wasn’t planning on paying attention to, but plans tend to change. He looked to be in his mid to late forties, he was kind of a big guy not that I was intimidated by him or anything. It was kind of hard to be considering the man was balding, his hair was very thin in the middle while it looked like he was trying to manage the rest of it to hide the fact he was losing hair. Sadly it wasn’t working, anyone that looked at him would come to the same conclusion in a matter of seconds that this middle age man was balding.

“I’m talking to you!” The man yelled just before lunging at me.

I took two steps to the side avoiding him which only made the man angrier. He started huffing and puffing while the people around us began encircling us and chanting. This was beginning to get real cliché, real fast. I curled and uncurled my fingers, I should probably handle this before it got out of hand.

I was preparing to deck this guy once he came near me but before I could even ball my hand into a fist, I felt a sudden tug on my body specifically my legs.

“What the hell?”

Everything turned white for a second just before I hit the floor. The balding man had landed a hit and was feeling a little too good about himself.

“Next time you’ll…”

The man stopped mid-sentence and I didn’t even have a chance to ask myself why, before I found out the answers. Clang something struck a nearby railing then suddenly I was weightless like a cloud just floating in the air. It took me a second to realize that it wasn’t just me that was floating, it was everyone.  I couldn’t even count how many of us were in the air, some people started panicking, which was kind of funny considering you’d think something like this wouldn’t surprise superhumans.

“What’s going on?”

“Get me down from here!”

“Oh crap…I’m afraid of heights.”

I looked around and noticed that some people were higher up in the air then others, for example me in particularly. Why was that? I didn’t have much time to dwell on that thought, CLANG…there it was again something hitting the railings. THUD…

“Awwwww what gives…”

Just like that we were all slammed against the ground which wasn’t the most pleasant landing to say the least.

“Good evening. My name is Jozef Morgan. I have worked here for the last twelve years. Anyway, I am the Warden, and you, you all are the prisoners or if you like unwilling volunteers in Prometheus’ research. Now you must be wondering why would I go so far as to tell you that, it’s simple, the more cooperative you are the more pleasant this will be for you all, while the less cooperative you are. Well…”

CLANG, within seconds I along with everyone else was floating weightlessly CLANG…THUD. Once again we all crashed into the ground, lucky for me I had unwittingly squirmed when I was in the air turning my body which allowed my front to face right side up thus allowing my back to strike the cold hard floor. Yup Mr. Lucky over here, sadly my dry humor didn’t numb the pain that rippled across my back.

“I hope you are all willing to cooperate thus your safety can be insured. You are not to fight among yourself unless you wish to be disciplined like…”

“NOOOOO DON’T…DON’T!” The crowd of people yelled collectively.

By adjusting my position slightly I managed to get a good look at the Warden he was standing on one of the walkways that overlooked the ground floor. He had a thick black mustache and beard combo. He wore a fancy navy blue uniform that looked like something a general would wear, it was even topped off with a hat. I starred at the man for a moment, I had a feeling he was going to be my biggest obstacle if I was going to escape.

For no apparent reason, Warden Jozef raised his right hand and slammed it against the railing. CLANG…CLANG…CLANG…. The Warden repeatedly slammed us into the ground without warning. By now I was dazed and confused, I was no longer on the ground of the bottom floor instead I was on the 3rd floor in a small room. Four guards dragged me into the room then placed me in the middle of it, my eyesight was blurry and I was weakened by the Warden’s Orientation. I didn’t really know what was going on but I heard a clink sound, four of them in fact, that’s when I noticed that I had been chained down. The guards left me in the room and slammed the door shut, I could hear the tumblers lock.

The door was an obsidian color probably specially made for me. I looked at my arms and legs, the chains were attached to my wrist and ankle not like the cuffs weren’t already unpleasant enough. It took me a moment to realize that they were taking extra special care to keep me locked up. I already knew part of the reason was the fact they couldn’t house me in a regular cell even with these inhibitor cuffs that would be just insane on their part but this room was built special wasn’t it. My head was hung down while I thought about it, I wasn’t lying down I was on my knees since I wasn’t coherent enough to stand. My arms were spread apart by the chains.

I had been held captive by Prometheus for who knows how long, I’d been in multiply facilities but not one quiet like this. This was a prison, they were trying to break us in here, trying to break me. I closed my eyes for a moment and bit my lip. I stopped for a second then bit it hard enough that I drew blood. It seemed stupid to do but it was important to me because it was symbolic. They may have beaten me today but they didn’t draw first blood. I just took that away from them. Blood ran down the right side of my lip and dropped to the cell floor.

My head shot up while I glared at my cell door with a burning anger in my eyes.

“I will escape from here, no matter what you throw at me I’m gonna be the one to walk out of here alive.”

Review

I did not expect this book to enrage me and pull at my heartstrings at the same time.

This is the 3rd in a series and while reading the first two might help understand a few situations a little better, it is fine to read on its own.

You might have heard of sexting and that many teens do it all the time. This book takes a look at that issue and the case where the state of California is charging those teens as sex offenders and in same cases with a felony. If you stop for a moment and think of the long term effects should a 12-17 year old be charged with a felony of possession of pornography, it can be quite startling. Sure not all kids are angels but imagine a seemingly innocent child taken to the extremes because of how a law is being interpreted.

This story kept me on edge because it was hard to know how this was going to turn out. The various twists and turns of the legal system, the parents of the young woman affected and even the underlying story about Dre and his past was enough to keep me on my toes trying to figure out how it might end. I liked how Jenny and Angela came together to defend Graylin and despite some of Graylin’s actions, I felt bad for the situation in which he was placed by over zealous parents and the DA’s office.

I didn’t want the story to end and appreciated the notes from the author at the end to discuss this topic and how it needs to be discussed with your children, no matter their age. I plan to have a discussion with mine!

It was a time before Terlingua Ranch, chili cook-offs, and when you could drive a hundred miles without seeing another vehicle or another person.  The year was 1961, and the tides of humanity that ebbed and flowed into the lower reaches of the Big Bend were at their historical nadir.  It was a vast, empty land spotted by isolated ranch headquarters, a national park with few visitors, and the many ruins of a past shrouded in legend, lore, and improbable truths. Six generations of Ben H. English’s family have called this enigmatic region home.  With his family headquartered at the old Lajitas Trading Post, he worked and lived on ranches and in places now little more than forgotten dots on yellowing maps.  He attended the one-room schoolhouse at Terlingua, prowled the banks of the Rio Grande, and crisscrossed the surrounding areas time and again on horseback and on foot.

Some fifty years later he writes about those years, revealing along the way the history and legends of the singular land he knows so well, separating fact from fiction, and bringing the reader into a world that few have experienced.  He also explores the lower Big Bend as it is found now, and the extraordinary vistas one can still discover just over the next rise.

An eighth-generation Texan, Ben H. English was raised mostly in the Lajitas-Terlingua area. An honors graduate of Angelo State University, he served in the United States Marine Corps for seven years, was a high school teacher, and retired after twenty-two years in the Texas Highway Patrol.

SHOWTIME, MIA. AND you know what they say about a show that’s about to start—it must go on.
Of course, they also tell the actors to break a leg and I’d much prefer that to what I’m about to do.
I turn down the paved road and see a large fenced-in property in the distance. My GPS tells me I’ve reached my destination.
It’s a beautiful and sunny September day with hardly a cloud in the sky. The weather certainly doesn’t match my emotions. If it did, it would be stormy. A raging storm, to include crazy lightning and booming thunder.
I don’t want to do this. I’d rather go to the dentist and have five teeth pulled. While I’m awake. Heck, I’d rather have my toenails removed. All of them. Without anesthesia.
But this is something I have to do, something I need to do. Not just for Stony. I need to do it for me.
Especially for me.
I can’t move forward with my life until I gain closure from the past. I’d like to place my past in a box, tie a pretty little bow on it, and place it on a shelf and forget about it.
Instead it sits on my kitchen counter begging to be put away every time I see it.
It’s time to put it away.
There’s only one way to do that.
Face Stony.
The last time I saw him was a little over a year ago, the moment I arrived home and stepped out of my brother’s car after being released from jail. He was there. Waiting for me.
Stony smiled at me. He smiled! Not just a little smile either. Stony never smiles and I mean never. Ever.
I thought it meant all was forgiven between us. I thought it meant we were starting over. I thought it meant so many things.
I was wrong. So very wrong.
I was told he’d had a girl with him that day, a pretty blond California girl. I didn’t notice her, but then, I was preoccupied. I was told they’d been seeing each other for a while.
I’d been kept in the dark about their relationship.
“Mia,” my mom had said, “You and Stony gave it your best shot. It didn’t work out. It’s for the best.”

If you love Cowboys, Christmas and the Wild West – then you need to read this book!

The six authors bring us back to the late 1800’s when the west was wild and life was nothing like what we know today.  But more than just a look into the past – these stories are of love, whether it be lost love, new found love or a love that has endured for decades.  In each story the main characters have some sort of issue to resolve, and each author weaves that tale into a succinct story that leaves us with a happy ending.

I don’t know if I can choose a favorite because they are all good!  I do think I liked the stories that included a dog a bit more, but that is the dog lover in me.  Animals always have their own personality that adds to the story.

Each story warmed my heart despite the difficulties that the characters faced in the beginning.  There are situations that probably everyone could relate to whether it was family issues, secrets or wanting more from life.

We give this book and all six novellas 5 paws up.  Perfect to read during this holiday season and since each story is about 100 pages, it won’t take long to enjoy each of the novellas.
