In her debut cookbook, acclaimed chef Angela Dimayuga shares her passion for Filipino food with home cooks.

Filipinx offers 100 deeply personal recipes—many of them dishes that define home for Angela Dimayuga and the more than four million people of Filipino descent in the United States. The book tells the story of how Dimayuga grew up in an immigrant family in northern California, trained in restaurant kitchens in New York City—learning to make everything from bistro fare to Asian-American cuisine—then returned to her roots, discovering in her family’s home cooking the same intense attention to detail and technique she’d found in fine dining.

In this book, Dimayuga puts a fresh spin on classics: adobo, perhaps the Filipino dish best known outside the Philippines, is traditionally built on a trinity of soy sauce, vinegar, and garlic—all pantry staples—but add coconut milk, vinegar, and oil, and it turns lush and silky; ribeye steaks bring extra richness to bistek, gilded with butter and a bright splash of lemon and orange juice. These are the punches of flavor and inspired recipes that home cooks have been longing for.

A modern, welcoming resource for this essential cuisine, Filipinx shares exciting and approachable recipes everyone will wholeheartedly embrace in their own kitchens.

My thoughts

I love trying new cookbooks and different ethnic foods and this cookbook, as part of Abrams Dinner Party, is no exception. It takes us to the Philippines and all of the delicious dishes that they serve there. So many flavors are melded together and while I am not extremely familiar with this cuisine, I have heard of a few dishes including Adobo and Lumpia. But this culture has so many more wonderful dishes beyond what we might be familiar with from what we have experienced.

I was first drawn to the recipe Food of the Gods which is a Molasses, Date, and Walnut square. This is so delicious and I feel like it is healthy when it is not when you look at how much sugar is included. But never the matter, I ate every last bite and even made a batch for my book club for our sweet treat exchange.

Outside of the wide variety of recipes, there is also history and culture presented to us. I found this very fascinating especially when it came to the language which is very gender-neutral, to kamayan which is eating with your hands versus silverware. I love the example about being out in nature and trying to set up a table with silverware just isn’t something that is done because it is more work than necessary.  There is even a seasoning matrix at the beginning to educate us on what might mix well together and where they are on the sweet, sour, salty, or fat scale.

There is so much to learn from this book outside of the various dishes. This would make a great cookbook to share with the family and to have an education dinner over some traditional dishes popular in the Philippines. I think it would make for an interesting evening in any household.

Review

I do love a good suspense/thriller novel and this one definitely kept me interested wondering what twist might surprise us at the end. And that twist? OMG, while I kind of guessed it I didn’t have anything to back it up, just a feeling. Let’s just say it is one crazy ending and I the epilogue even left me wondering what else might come out regarding the characters.

This book alternates POV between Alexa and Beth, sisters that have had tragic events in their past. There are some chapters from Dr. Greer’s POV as Alexa’s psychiatrist. You can see the difference between Alexa and Beth’s personalities. Alexa seems to be “weak” and wanting to please everyone, while Beth has a harder personality and really isn’t very nice especially when Alexa is trying to take charge of her life and move past the tragedies of the past.

The book does highlight mental illness and how it affects everyone differently. I don’t want to spoil some of the plot twists, but Alexa’s mental illness treatment plays heavily into the whole story. It was interesting to see her interactions with Dr. Greer and what he knew (that we don’t find out until later) and how he treated Alexa and her thoughts.

I always wonder how authors can come up with these sorts of plot lines and appreciate that they do so that I can enjoy the suspense of what might happen next.

This is a debut novel and I think the author does a wonderful job and we give it 4 paws up.

Review

What a delightful historical romance that brings together aristocracy, love, intrigue, and humor.

Catherine Greatheart was dealt a blow where her fiance was killed in a fire before their wedding. She doesn’t expect to find love again because she was well-matched with Avery, but cupid shot the arrow at her and Quin, Avery’s younger brother and now the Duke of Wesley. Quin enjoyed being the younger brother without the expectations of taking over the family legacy and was quite well suited as a professor in Cambridge. However, tragedy struck and he had to learn to balance what he wanted and what was expected of him. What he never expected (and fought internally) was to fall in love with Catherine. But when he finally admitted it to himself, sparks flew between the two.

There was so much to like about this book – the slow romance between Quin and Catherine; the mystery regarding Lord Bircham; and Catherine’s desire to be independent and treated as more than a fragile woman. Probably the character I liked the most after Quin and Catherine is Joan. She is the younger sister of Quin’s friend Morgan. She may be but 14 but she is shaping up to be an independent woman fighting for their rights. I hope that there will be a book featuring her in the future.

I think one reason I don’t read a lot of regency or historical romance is how women were treated at that time as if they were not intelligent and were to be coddled. I really liked how Catherine stood up for herself and it didn’t offend Quin at all; in fact, I think he liked how she was able to hold her own when it came to business and other business affairs. She also did not let Lord Bircham run over her. He might have been the appointed trustee while her grandmother was incapacitated, but I don’t think he took the time to get to know Catherine and her capabilities. But this is not uncommon for that time. I think by the end of the book he had been set straight!

There was a bit of intrigue surrounding Mrs. Burke, the chaperone for Catherine while her grandmother was ill. It really brought an interesting twist to the story and it wasn’t one that I expected and I think the revelation surprised a lot of people.

The story moves along at a slower pace until about the last 30% and then the twists in the story are interjected. I think that last bit of the story was my favorite part.

I enjoyed this book and we give it 4 paws up.

Excerpt

Catherine could not sleep. In fact, when she closed her eyes, it was as if she became more awake.

She rose from bed and padded over to her chair by the low-burning fire. There hadn’t been much change to her grandmother’s condition, and if she didn’t improve, the solicitor would likely recommend that Lord Bircham be contacted.

How she hated that he could hold any power over her future! Someone she didn’t know, who hadn’t any understanding of her or her grandmother, was to be given power over an estate he didn’t earn or inherit, all because he was a male relative.

It was bloody well infuriating.

And she wasn’t going to sit back and let it happen.

No.

She’d fought through too much pain, survived too much to allow her future to be dictated to her. This was her family, her estate, her future, and she was going to have a say in it, come what may.
But she needed information.

Who was this Lord Bircham? She had only met him once, and it was so long ago. The fire burned lower in the grate as she watched the embers stir and flare, her thoughts swirling. Who would be the best informant? She could have—should have—asked Quin, but he had done so much already. She didn’t want to rely on him, not for this, though she did have the sneaking suspicion he wasn’t asking for permission, simply going and finding information regardless.

If so, all the better. But she wasn’t going to wait for him.

She wished there was some random gossip she could uncover—it would be the easiest way to find out information—and as soon as she thought of that, a plan formed in her mind.
Who else knew everything except for the ladies of the ton? If there was a scandal, or rumor of one, they would know.

What she needed was someone she could trust, who wouldn’t turn her situation into new gossip, someone who would just give information, not take it. Lord Penderdale—Morgan—had mentioned his younger sister was debuting this season; Joan was her name. Perhaps she would know something? Yet as she considered it, Catherine disregarded the idea.

She needed someone who had listened to the gossip for years, who would know the older scandals, or lack thereof.

Relief flowed through her and she smiled as she thought of a name.

Yes, it was perfect.

And trustworthy.

A sense of peace eased her anxious mind as she started to work out the details. The desk was a short walk from her place near the fire, and with a few steps, she was sitting before a leaf of paper and writing a quick note.

Your Grace,
It would be my sincerest honor to have you over for tea. Would today be acceptable?
Yours,
Catherine Greatheart

Catherine sealed the message and set it just to the side of her desk, awaiting dawn. With a plan formed, she returned to bed, hope filling her heart, and finally fell asleep.

When she awoke, the sunlight was already brightly streaming through her bedroom window. It took only a moment for her to remember her plans from earlier, and with a determination she hadn’t felt in some time, she rose from bed and slipped the letter from her desk. Ringing for her maid, she swept her hair to the side and over her shoulder, pondering the other aspects of her plan that she would need to put into motion today.

As she caught a glimpse of herself in the mirror, she paused. Her grandmother would be proud of her progress, taking control—and doing it regardless of the fear that could easily consume her.
Fear of the unknown.

She nodded to her reflection, determination patching all the leftover cracks that hadn’t been filled before. The door opened, and Millard entered, offering a quick curtsy.

“Good morning. Please have this dispatched to the Duchess of Wesley’s residence.”

Millard took the note. “Shall I have the messenger wait for a reply?”

Catherine thought for a moment. “No.” She was quite certain the Duchess of Wesley would accept the invitation; Quin had already implied she was planning to visit anyway.

“Right away, my lady.” Millard left to give the message to the servant who would deliver it, leaving Catherine with her thoughts once more.

She looked at the clock on the mantel over the fireplace and noted she had a lot of time before she could expect the duchess.

Perfect.

When Millard returned, Catherine put on a lovely day dress. She was going shopping—and not just for clothes, but for everything else that could land her the most important piece of her plan.

A husband.

The season would start soon, and she needed the dresses they’d already ordered to be ready, but with a few changes. She wasn’t a debutante anymore. But neither was she a widow. However, there was a thin line between the two that allowed for some freedom in her choices in clothing. She wasn’t going to sit by idly, waiting for someone to win her heart. No. She had done that and lost nearly everything.

The morning light illuminated her desk as she approached, her need to write a list burning inside her. Something to keep her focused. Something to keep her from settling for less. She inked the pen and hovered over the paper.

Husband requirements:

Rich—no fortune hunters
Not belittling of women in business ventures
Interested in supporting the arts
Established
No gambling history
Kind to his mother/sisters

She studied the list and frowned. That was pretty much every other lady’s list; there wasn’t anything unique about it. She doubted anyone wanted a gambling and abusive man—but she needed, wanted something more than she could articulate.

Love?

Of course, but she wasn’t going to hold out for it. She’d had it once, or close enough. She wanted…

The word hit her with a solid thump in her chest, setting her heart to pounding. A partnership. Not a legal obligation. Not a man to officiate her life. Someone to walk beside her, to listen to her. Heavens, was that asking too much? To have a husband who could take advice from a woman? She grimaced. It shouldn’t be asking too much, but she wondered if maybe it was still difficult to find in a London ballroom. Perhaps she needed more from the Duchess of Wesley than merely information on her cousin. Maybe she needed information on other things too. Other people.
Could she do it? Take that step? Did she dare ask her almost-mother-in-law about other men? Did she have anyone else to ask? No. She didn’t. So, with a bit of a hysterical chuckle, she realized she was going to do the unthinkable. Ask the woman who was going to be her mother-in-law for help on finding a husband.

Good Lord.

She was either making a brilliant plan or a fatal error. And the worst part was that she wouldn’t know till later. She’d need to wrestle with the decision for hours yet, if not days.

But if it worked…

The hope of that echoed through her, filling her and pushing back the fear. The risk was far outweighed by the reward. And right now she needed an ally. She only hoped she’d made the right decision in who.

Review

I didn’t realize this was a novella when I started, but it is not to be overlooked. I enjoyed the storyline of a high school graduate that somehow scores an internship with a publishing house in NYC and what she goes through keeping her true identity a secret. But she does this for good reason, because she is a poet and wants to be published someday, or perhaps even work in a publishing house.

I’m not sure if the expectations are accurate or not for this industry but I found the story amusing and fast-paced.

I am normally not a poetry kind of person, but the poetry within the book was outstanding. It really brought together Anya’s hopes, dreams, and desires.

Oh, and I had figured out where the manuscript was and was surprised no one thought to look there first.

I give this novella 4 paws up.

Synopsis

Would you trust your developing years to a mysterious organization expecting a successful life in return?

In the midst of the 2040s, Livvy Blunt, a girl with an unquiet mind, lives in confinement. Her home is a monastery, a place of silence and meditation created to keep her mind free from the frivolous matters of the modern world.

The Monastery is a corporation with a clear goal: transform young Empty-heads into skilled Silver-hairs. The means to do that are controversial: uploads of skills to the brain. The more youngsters manage to keep their minds empty of gossip and avoid overthinking life, the more skills can be transferred.

Livvy has a hard time trying to keep her mind idle, but her sacrifice should pay off by the promise of a successful future as a Silver-hair, a professional any recruiter would fight to hire. But when time comes for her to choose her set of skills, she is denied every professional and fun skill she ever longed for.

People say she’s lucky for being selected to the Monasterial Upload Program, but she’s not so sure.

Review

What if you could have any skill in the world that you wanted by simply receiving a mind upload? That is the focus of this new YA series and is quite an intriguing one. Set in the future, we meet Livvy who has gone into this program as a young child and purposely keeps her mind free of any information so that when she turns 18, she can become a silver hair and receive an upload of her new skills. The more space you have in your brain, the better the position.

However, something goes awry when Livvy receives a request to meet someone in the garden at midnight, well past curfew. What happens from there is an adventure for Livvy and time for her to reevaluate the path for her life.

This self-discovery journey for Livvy is one that I think many can relate to in their own lives. She thinks that she wants to go down one path but when the opportunity to explore Barcelona where her mother was from, well that was too much of an opportunity to pass up. It challenges what she was led to believe all those years and was uploading skills the way she wanted to live her life? It doesn’t hurt that a few new friends open her eyes to life and what it could be versus what it was scheduled to be through The Monastery.

There is also conflict between warring companies seeking the same technological advances. It is no different than what we might see today. What was interesting was who participated in this battle to save mankind from itself and from big corporations. It made me think what side would I want to be on if I was there.

I loved all of the descriptions of Barcelona and the historical buildings that were explored. I’ve never been to Barcelona but while reading this book I felt like I was there and could envision the sites of this European town.

This is a great start to a new series and I wonder what is in store for Livvy and the gang going forward. We give it 4 paws up.

Jamie Griffin, our roguish young Irishman, made his debut in The Enigma Gamers. He appeared in the Macau high-end nightclub, adjusting the casino’s slot machines. Jamie convinced Frieda to join him on this gig for the massive payoff potential of this target-rich environment.

This is a short story that follows Jamie from his teenage years to young adulthood. He lives in Ireland with his brother, Ian, and his parents, until a fateful day changes everything. He decides to escape and tries to follow his dream, meeting several young women along the way.

I think this story is about growing up and finding our path despite what fate throws in our path. Jamie has some big losses, yet he keeps moving forward and is blessed by those he meets.

This won’t take long to read but is quite enjoyable and you might find a hidden meaning that relates to your own life.

Review

This unassuming cover is for a reason, or at least that is what I believe. Because this book imparts the truth about Christmas and Santa to a child that is growing out of that phase, the secrets to be shared must be done in secret and with the child in full agreement. I liked how the story draws in the young child and has them sign an agreement to not reveal the truth to those that still believe.

I enjoyed how the story was spun that the parents were doing this to help St Nick because there were so many children in the world and he was tired and needed help. It still keeps some of the magic alive for the older children.

It is a great book for older siblings and brings them into the mystery of Santa and encourages them to be good stewards of the Christmas Magic and be a Magic Keeper.

I would suggest not reading this book to the younger children that do still believe until they are ready to become Christmas Magic Keepers too. The page for signatures has many lines and it would be a great tradition and they could see that their older siblings had done this too.

We give the book 4 paws up.

About the Authors

Anna and Gunnar are the husband-and-wife team behind Keeping Christmas Magic. Anna immigrated from Russia at age 12 and began her American journey in Swampscott, MA, attending Boston University before moving out to California to pursue her entrepreneurial career which has culminated in her co-founding Upstart, an AI lending platform. A third-generation Marine, Gunnar grew up pretty much everywhere there’s a Marine base before going to Cornell for undergrad, deploying as a Human Intelligence Officer to Iraq, the Horn of Africa, and Bosnia before attending Harvard for business school. Gunnar’s entrepreneurial career has focused on education software and services where he’s founded and invested in a handful of companies including his most recent company, Array. When their then-six-year-old son Tristan started asking hard questions about Santa, they didn’t have a good answer. Wanting to keep Christmas as magical as possible for as long as possible they looked for a children’s book to help and when they couldn’t find one, they wrote it. Originally, the poem was just for Tristan and his baby sister Sasha, but some close friends convinced them to submit it for publishing, and the more they worked on the story, the more they felt like it needed to be told. They hope that the book does for parents around the world, what’s it’s done for them, help make an otherwise difficult conversation a beautiful experience instead.

To outsiders, the relationship between Manhattan antiquities assessor Annalisse Drury and sports car magnate Alec Zavos must look carefree and glamorous. In reality, it’s a love affair regularly punctuated by treasure hunting, high adventure, and the occasional dead body.

When Alec schedules a getaway trip to show Annalisse his mother’s Italian birthplace, he squeezes in the high-stakes business of divesting his family’s corporation. But things go terribly wrong as murder makes its familiar reappearance in their lives – and this time it’s Alec’s disgraced former CFO who’s the main suspect.

Accompanied by friend and detective Bill Drake, Annalisse and Alec find themselves embroiled in a behind-closed-doors conspiracy that threatens the reputation and legacy of Alec’s late father – linking him to embezzlement, extortion, and the dirty business of the Sicilian Mafia. The key to it all might be a gifted set of rosary beads where Annalisse can use her skills for appraising artifacts to uncover the truth. She leads Alec toward answers that are unthinkable—and events that will change their futures forever.

Scattered Legacy is the third in Marlene M. Bell’s thrilling Annalisse series, which weaves romance, crime, and historical mystery into addictive tales to instantly captivate fans of TV show Bones or Dan Brown’s The Da Vinci Code.

Murder, the Mafia, and Mayhem…that is what you can expect from this new novel in the Annalisse series from Marlene Bell. It is set in the picturesque country of Italy and I loved the descriptions of the towns and the sights. It is almost like being there myself…maybe someday.

Annalisse and Alec are planning a trip to Italy to relax and see some of his mother’s homeland. However, things don’t go quite as planned and they are dragged into helping solve a murder, determining if a past employee embezzled from the company, and uncovering the truth about an ancient rosary. I always enjoy following the research that characters do to uncover information about what is happening on their journey. In this case, it is researching Alec’s mother’s, Generosa, past. I know how it can be to go down a rabbit hole searching for your family ties. But this journey and research are not without some dangerous moments for Annalisse and Alec. There were some “heart in my throat” moments during some events wondering how it was going to turn out for this duo.

There are multiple storylines happening in this book and it kept me engaged as I tried to figure out how they were going to all tie together in the end. There are some surprises that I didn’t expect but maybe should have with some clues that were dropped earlier in the story. There is even a cat, Stella, that is a part of this picture and since both Annalisse and Alec are animal lovers, it isn’t surprising that they have a soft heart when it comes to her. I always enjoy Bill Drake’s involvement in their cases and this book is no different. He is smart and knows how to get the job done.

Annalisse and Alec have a strong relationship, but I feel like they both still keep secrets from each other. I can’t blame Annalisse for not taking their relationship further at this point; there are too many secrets still in play. She also tends to run from situations versus staying and waiting for the answer. While she might have some past issues that cause her to react this way, nothing is to be gained by running and not facing the truth. Perhaps she will learn how to stay and face the unknown because that is how you move a relationship to the next level.

The story is action-packed from the beginning to the end and what a cliffhanger that will leave you wanting more from the next book in this series. It will also give you a peek into a world that many of us can only imagine, the lives of the rich, famous, and powerful.  If you decide to pick up this book, make sure to read the first two books in this series. It will make a lot more sense when there are references to past events and other characters.

We give this book 4 paws up.

Synopsis

Director Steven Spielberg is more of an auteur than given recognition for. “The Films of Steven Spielberg” examines the maturation of a filmmaker through movies that reflect the director’s own life, fascinations, and obsessions. Spielberg’s upbringing and foray into the 1970s Hollywood business structure show us the origin of themes that are constantly present in Spielberg’s films such as fatherhood, World War II, and his collaboration with composer John Williams. Although mainstream cinema has become dominated by franchises – Spielberg has proven to be routinely ahead of his time in the post-9/11 era.

Review

This book may be small but it is filled with information you never knew (or maybe you did) about Steven Spielberg. I will admit that I don’t know much about the man other than he directed many films that I have enjoyed and some that I have not seen but you have heard of like Jaws.

I was impressed with the depth of the research into this man, his life, and the films he produced. It is an entertaining story and I’m sure a lot more could have been written about this legend in the film world.

There are footnotes, but since I read the eBook, I wasn’t able to reference the footnote while reading along. I didn’t mind but sometimes it is interesting to find out the sources of information at that moment.

This is a book I might never have picked up if someone hadn’t shared it with me. I’m glad that they did as I enjoyed learning more about Spielberg and how he ended up with a fascinating career.

We give this book 4 paws up.

When Trace Malloy and Blaine Witherspoon collide on a desolate West Texas highway, their fender bender sets the tone for escalating clashes that will determine the future of the town of Conquistador.

Malloy, a ranch manager and lifelong cowboy, knows that his occupation—and his community—are dying. He wants new- millennium opportunities for his son, even though he himself failed to summon the courage to leave familiar touchstones behind.

Witherspoon, an ambitious, Lexus-driving techie, offers a solution. He moves to Conquistador to build and run a state-of-the-art semiconductor plant that will bring prestige and high-paying technology jobs to revive the town—and advance his own career.

What neither man anticipates is the power the “Big Empty” will wield over their plans. The flat, endless expanse of dusty plain is as much a character in the conflict as are the locals struggling to subsist in this timeworn backwater and the high-tech transplants hell-bent on conquering it. While Malloy grapples with the flaws of his ancestors and his growing ambivalence toward the chip plant, Witherspoon falls prey to construction snafus, corporate backstabbing, and financial fraud. As they each confront personal fears, they find themselves united in the search for their own version of purpose in a uniquely untamable Texas landscape.

Praise

“The Big Empty” captures a moment when Big Tech seemingly promised everything. By turns funny and painful, Steffy’s story builds like an accelerating freight train, reaching a fast-paced climax.”   — The Epoch Times

“Like the titular land itself, Steffy’s novel is uncompromising in spotlighting the strains that the drive toward material achievement puts on the individual in the face of nature’s whims.”  — Southern Review of Books

Fear, greed, family, and hope play a major role in this new novel set in West Texas.

If you have never experienced the vastness of West Texas, it might be hard to imagine this sleepy little town of Conquistador. But never fear, the author does an amazing job of describing the desolate open plains and hills so that the reader can picture the setting in their mind. There are multiple mentions of the sunsets and I can only imagine the brilliance of color setting over the horizon and putting on a display like never seen before.

Conquistador is a shrinking town and if not careful, could become a ghost town. The town consists of primarily cattle ranches with a few other small businesses tucked into the mix. The largest ranch has quite the history and it is the only life that Trace Malloy has ever known. His loyalty to the ranch is a blessing and a curse to his life. It is consistent, but also, not a steady way to make a living due to the droughts, beef prices, and lack of opportunity in a dying town.

Enter Blaine Witherspoon and AZTech. The opportunities that AZTech can provide might be what saves this town. However, there are many things that the company does not take into consideration and the main one is the available water supply that they will need. West Texas is dry and you don’t find lakes or rivers and all water is derived from the water table below the surface. Since the majority of the town are cattle ranches, they rely on the water in cases of drought to keep the livestock alive. There could be a battle for what little water is available especially during a drought.

As I started reading this novel, I couldn’t help but not like Blaine Witherspoon. He thought he knew it all and what he didn’t understand is how things really work in West Texas compared to where he was from, California. His attitude really grated on my nerves. But as the story continued and certain facts were revealed, Blaine slowly realized that perhaps he was going about this all wrong, and fighting the town for the water and electricity might not be the best for everyone involved. It takes a major event for this to surface, plus some other underlying events at his company, but I grew to appreciate his flexibility and willingness to sacrifice when the situation called for it.

Trace Malloy is what I would picture a cowboy to look like with a mustache, weathered skin, and a tough mental outlook. He is happy with his life but wants more for his son Colt. However, an accident that broke Colt’s legs shatters his dreams to fly a plane in the Air Force. If Colt can’t do that, he wants to remain on the ranch doing what he knows best, raising cattle. I think most parents want something better for their children, but sometimes you just can’t alter their dreams or desires.

This story starts off with a bang (literally) from two trucks colliding driven by Blaine and Trace. They could not have had a worse introduction to each other at that moment and because this is a small town, news will travel quickly no matter the subject. Many will get a chuckle out of the incident knowing Trace’s personality and how he would have reacted in the situation. Follow-up meetings don’t go well either and Trace will admit he is no goodwill ambassador and shouldn’t be trying to placate the “homies”. Homies is a term they came up with to call those that we’re moving into town to run the new chip production facility. They were creating a new subdivision and expected it to be like one you would find in any metropolitan area with a golf course and decorative fountain. They even had gates at the entrance which amused Trace because in a town that small, no one was stealing anything from anyone. Despite the drain on the water supply, this housing development will be a godsend in the end…but for reasons I’m not going to share and you will have to read the book to find out.

There are so many storylines that bring this novel together and create a story that will resonate with many. The first is Trace’s dealings with his mother and her dementia. Knowing several people with dementia, I know how hard it is to interact with them especially once they reach the point that they do not remember who you are or even where they are at that time. Blaine has family issues with a wife that would rather be in New Jersey and comes across as very selfish. There is also his son, Brandon, that has issues of his own including drug use. How and where Brandon was raised is very reflective in an incident that culminates in a major turning point for the town and the characters. But perhaps it is also a case of how he was raised by his parents.

But this book is not without some humor thrown into the mix. I think my biggest chuckle was when the Witherspoon family attended a BBQ and brought their own food since they are vegetarians. Trust me when I say that the ranchers weren’t sure what to do with the frozen veggie burgers mixed in with their steaks, burgers, and whatever else was on the grill. I did wonder if Brandon, the son, would have preferred a nice juicy burger versus the veggie burger.

Overall, this story is a look at how life really is like for ranchers and the struggles they face, and how dependent they are on nature to help provide some of what they need to survive. We give this book 4 paws up.
