Book Title: DECONSTRUCTING ANXIETY The Journey from Fear to Fulfillment by Todd E. Pressman, PhD

Category: Adult Non-Fiction (18+) (336 pages)

Genre: Self-Help/How To

Publisher: Rowman & Littlefield

Release date: January 2020

Synopsis

In Deconstructing Anxiety, Pressman provides a new and comprehensive understanding of fear’s subtlest mechanisms. In this model, anxiety is understood as the wellspring at the source of all problems. Tapping into this source therefore holds the clues not only for how to escape fear, but how to release the very causes of suffering, paving the way to a profound sense of peace and satisfaction in life.

With strategically developed exercises, this book offers a unique, integrative approach to healing and growth, based on an understanding of how the psyche organizes itself around anxiety. It provides insights into the architecture of anxiety, introducing the dynamics of the “core fear” (one’s fundamental interpretation of danger in the world) and “chief defense” (the primary strategy for protecting oneself from threat). The anxious personality is then built upon this foundation, creating a “three dimensional, multi-sensory hologram” within which one can feel trapped and helpless.

Replete with processes that bring the theoretical background into technicolor, Deconstructing Anxiety provides a clear roadmap to resolving this human dilemma, paving the way to an ultimate and transcendent freedom. Therapists and laypeople alike will find this book essential in helping design a life of meaning, purpose and enduring fulfillment.

LETTING GO OF JUDGMENT AS A CURE FOR ANXIETY AND DEPRESSION

by

Todd E. Pressman, Ph.D.

Any good path for healing and for growth teaches about the importance of letting go of judgment.  A course in miracles, one of my favorite teachings, puts it this way: “You are not really capable of being tired but you are very capable of wearying yourself.  The strain of constant judgment is virtually intolerable and exhausting”.  Our judgments not only cause us to become exhausted, but they are responsible for creating our entire idea that we live in an attacking world. When we judge, we become locked into that world, believing there is no escape.  In this way, judgment causes our anxiety and depression.

How exactly does judgment do this?  Classical psychology would say that we “project” our negative feelings about ourselves–guilt, shame, greed, jealousy and so fort–onto the world when we judge.  We do this in the attempt to absolve ourselves of these feelings and our responsibility for them.  The result: victimization and helplessness, anxiety and depression.  For once we project these feelings onto the world, believing they are someone else’s fault and not our responsibility, we give up our only chance for making real change in our lives.  When we recognize that we are responsible for these things, we can withdraw the projection and discover that the “attacking” world is actually a blank canvas upon which we can project whatever we like.  Therein lies the opportunity to project more positive experiences and live in the world of our choosing.

This is where forgiveness, the antidote to judgment, comes in.  Forgiveness, properly understood, is not about “letting someone slide” for the terrible thing they have done.  In fact, this attitude only strengthens the belief that they have indeed done something terrible and they are the case of the problem.  True forgiveness, instead, is the understanding that we made up the whole idea of what we thought someone else did to us.  Again, A course in miracles puts it this way: “Forgiveness recognizes what you thought your brother [or sister] did to you has not occurred”.  Of course, they may have performed the action we observed, but our judgment of it is solely ours.  We have no access to their mind, no way of  knowing “for sure” that they intended to slight us or pull one over on us or in some other way cause us harm.  Our judgment of their actions is purely a creation of our own thoughts and feelings, based on our unique set of  learned assumptions.  What a revelation!  With this, the responsibility, happily, is thrown right back upon us—happily, because now all the power is in our hands.  We can correct our mistaken idea, and see that our brother, sister, friend, parent or boss has no power over us.  We don’t know what they reallymeant by their actions.  And so they have not actually done anything to us; they were simply playing out some learned assumptions from their past about how best to deal with life.  They have not done anything that requires us to be anxious or depressed and to try to defend ourselves in an unfruitful way.  We simply projected our own ideas of attack upon them so we could blame someone or something “out there”.

“But I know them!  They really did mean to hurt me”.  The power of our conviction in such a statement is a testament to how thoroughly we don’t want to look at ourselves.  It’s really no concern of ours whether the other person meant to cause us harm or the situation truly does threaten to take away what we hold near and dear.  The only thing that matters is how holding these judgments hurt us.  They cause our anxiety and depression.  The key to freedom from anxiety and depression is to look only at how we have created these judgments and to let them go!

When our objection to these ideas is strong and we simply cannot let go of our certainty about “how things are out there”, we need to understand that our attachment to our judgments comes from the hope that we will get the other person or reality to change according to our wishes.  Isn’t that the hidden thought behind all judgments?  “So and so should behave differently or such and such should look differently to make me happy!”.  We want all things to comply with our wishes, our idea of how the world should be.  This is our most coveted strategy for how to be happy, and we invest all of ourselves into it over and over again.  But the world and people will never comply fully with our wishes…especially because everyone else is trying to impose their wishes on us at the same time!  The key to healing and growth, the release from anxiety and depression, is to “let go”–let go of our judgments about how things should be and accept things as they are.  Then we are free to flow with whatever comes along, peacefully, gracefully, finding our good in what is available to us, rather than insisting things change before we can be happy.

We will never become happy by trying to arrange the puzzle pieces of the world to our liking.  This is the great source of suffering in the world.  Let us instead recognize that it is up to us to take back this projection and correct the idea that we must judge and attack others in order to be happy.  Let us instead turn our eyes inward and discover that, in fact, we are already whole and complete and have access to everything we need for our fulfillment.  Only when we project our need for others to fulfill our wishes, judging them if they do not do so (in the hope that they will feel guilty and begin to comply), can we believe otherwise.

A subtlety comes up here.  We must not judge ourselves as guilty for judging others.  This is a projection of the same kind, making ourselves the enemy and thereby making correction perhaps twice as hard to see.  It is imperative that we include ourselves in the forgiveness process, seeing that we are, indeed, whole and complete.  Often, it is necessary to start with forgiving ourselves before we can do so with others.  In the end, however, the two are the same, and as we let go of our judgments about others we spontaneously recognize that we who have forgiven must be free from guilt in order to recognize guiltlessness in the other.

A patient of mine once attended a weekend retreat I was holding.  During this retreat, she visited a painful aspect of her life—her 21 year old son, who had been suffering with Bipolar Disorder, would often threaten to kill himself.  My patients’ great anxiety was that she would return home from work one day and find him dead.

Certainly, her anxiety was understandable.  And yet in the course of our work together, it became clear that she was subtly imposing a demand on her son by dreading his taking his life.  Rather than offering him the love he so desperately needed, he was receiving from her the implicit demand that he put away his own pain so as not to scare her.  With this recognition, my patient was able to courageously empathize with her son’s pain, and even to accept that if he wanted to take his life, there was nothing she could do to stop him.  She could, however, offer him her love.

This brought an extraordinary relief to my patient, who promptly went home from the weekend and began relating to her son in a new way.  His transformation as a result was remarkable and he has since found a place to live, gotten a steady job and moved up to the position of manager.  Both mother and son enjoy a new way of communicating in which they are able to give and receive each others’ love, free from the anxiety which had them trying to get that love by projecting their unrecognized need.

Synopsis

Lornamarie in this twisty thriller, gripping, giddy style skilfully narrated the life of a man who practised his profession excellently well until his private life interfered with his success in all its ramifications.

It is the story of a bright and gifted boy, Segun, that will grip you as you read about how he grew up to become a doctor. It tells of his hard work with not so much to show for it as he struggled and battled his addiction to gambling with adverse consequences leaving a vacuum in his life. The author keeps you in suspense as the intriguing story unfolds.

Segun lived his life like a Candle in the Wind with his struggle and fought back from the edge of death, his recovery and then back to the inevitable end. Doctors are human, and so are we all.

You are glued to the book from the beginning right to the end as it exposes not only addiction to alcohol, drugs and gambling but also challenges that couples face in a marriage like childlessness and the consequences in various societies, infertility in marriages and treatment through in vitro fertilization.

Lornamarie used the humanitarian story to plead for a change to current American gun law with a hope that unfortunate stories similar to the storyline could be prevented to make the world a better place to live. The book touched on real-life issues such as miscarriage of justice, reckless endangerment with a firearm, dealing with grief, corruption, racism, counselling and rehabilitation — the use of alibi, insanity, depression and poor mental state as a defence during the criminal trial.

It is a well-known fact that the greatest dramas occur not on screens or stages, but rather in some courtrooms scenes, Lornamarie, in The Plea on Oath, brings these dramas alive.

Your checklist while writing suspense and great mystery novels

It was an interesting but tedious task plotting my new mystery and suspense novel The Plea on Oath, I have been inspired by great works of James Patterson, Lee Child, Laura Shapiro and Ayobami Adebayo.

James Patterson knew how to hold his audience in suspense, you will keep on guessing where he is heading, you just keep on turning pages.  I once took one of his book Alert from the bedroom to the bathroom, then to the living room and then back to the bedroom.   Just kept on reading till I finished.

Things to remember when writing a crime fiction thriller is that you make sure that the suspense drives the narrative and that it keeps your readers interested.  Something has happened and how, where and who is responsible for what had happened.  Getting all of that to your audience in a pleasurable and entertaining manner.

Making your readers laugh out loud is the way to go.  Imagine you are the reader, put yourself in the position of a reader and see whether you find your book entertaining or not. I think every crime fiction writer should have a dint of comedy, horror and humour to a reasonable extent, otherwise readers will find the book a chore to read.   You should create something to be anxious about.

Humour helps to balance the tension created by the crime scene and investigation.

Start your fiction thriller with a ‘bang’ I mean something serious has happened, make sure the incident is like a Tornado, cyclone, twister or whirlwind.  The tension rises with controlled speed but balance things with reality of life, things that would make a normal day look real.  Like a family sitting on the dining for a meal or your characters going out for a meal.  Do your research on location so that there are no conflicts.  I started The Plea on Oath with a tragic incident that occurred on a normal day, but in the middle of the night when most people have gone to sleep, no one saw it coming not even the writer knew where it was all heading!.  That is the way to go, paint the picture with all the colours you need because the beginning will determine whether your reader continues or puts the book down.  Segun was struck by a stray bullet in the middle of the night, the bullet pierced through the toilet window, you will initially think this is a direct attack to have him killed, it is believable isn’t it?  What I wanted to make clear is that it is time for the American gun law to be revisited and changed for the good of all.  How can Segun be gunned down in the comfort of his home by a stray bullet that came in through the window.  The incident looked like a premeditated attack but that was arguable.  Put the readers in a position of debate.  Let them start guessing what the answer is.  You should just continue to ‘show’ but not ‘tell’

Ensure that there are twists and turns in your thriller.  That is the whole idea.  Make sure to keep your story line flowing, by this I mean don’t stay on one location for too long, in an ideal world we move around, we travel, we go to work, we fly on the aeroplane, make it real with things happening around while you are creating your plots and scenes at the same time.

Don’t give away clues, be in control to hold your audience in suspense, something like ‘nobody knows’ not even you.  Keep your audience on their guard.

If you can create speeches, then by all means do so, readers like hearing a good speech.  When Shakespeare wrote Julius Caesar, the speeches made the drama interesting.  I could never ever forget Anthony’s speech.

One of the reviewers of The Plea on Oath said, ‘The press interviews were intriguing’.  People can deduce a lot of information from the questions that journalist ask. Press interviews is also a good review of what has happened during a court trial in my book.  Journalist in most cases confirm what the readers are thinking.

Be sure to be clear with your knowledge of the time, any place or country you’ve chosen for your story, for example you will find me using United States as the country where the crime occurred (crime scene) because I wanted to appeal for a change to gun laws in America by narrating a story, one of the reasons why I wrote the book in the first place.  I then created some scenes in the United Kingdom because I know professionals travel to England to study medicine and they end up going back to settle down in America to practice their profession.  I also had to locate the place for funerals in Nigeria because Segun’s parents lived in Nigeria, he also got married in Nigeria, The Plea on Oath is full of twists and turns.

You should consider creating a suspense, don’t make the mystery too easy to solve, but sure that at the end, reveal the motive of the crime and be sure that the ending is clear on who committed the crime and why and how it was solved.  Try to make your story the best it can be. Remember to describe your characters, having your characters developed to the fullest is an essential part of writing a good story and to making the characters believable, you can see in my story how I brought in Ben who was Segun’s best friend from childhood, how he got married to Yvonne.  Ben’s parents lived in Nigeria and Ben even though a white boy grew up in Nigeria.  He went to the same school as Segun.  Both characters were developed in my story.

When you have gone through your story over and over again, cut out unnecessary fillers as you can.

Your work is ready!  Good luck.

I hope you’ll find this checklist useful while writing your mystery novel.

Threatening dire consequences, Graham compels Darcy to guide him on a sojourn in the world of mortals.

Darcy immediately questions the angel’s motives when he demands to be a guest at Pemberley. Can he trust Graham’s assurance that no harm will come to his wife and child? And why does Graham insist on spending time with Elizabeth? How can Darcy possibly protect his family from an angel with power over life and death?

In this romantic fantasy, the beloved couple from Jane Austen’s Pride & Prejudice must contend with both human and unearthly challenges. Are the fates against them? Or will their extraordinary love conquer all?

Excerpt

When Darcy returned downstairs after dressing for dinner, he was drawn by sounds from the music room. He froze in place at the doorway, absorbed by the sight of his wife playing the pianoforte and singing a duet with Graham. His breathing hitched, and he was gripped with the force of a cutting discomfort. The two of them made an attractive picture together.

The man with the golden hair and perfect features was also blessed with an impressive baritone singing voice. Darcy remained in the doorway until they finished the song. When he clapped and entered the room, they both gazed at him.

Directing her gay smile towards him, Elizabeth said, “Fitzwilliam, there you are. Did you know Graham had such a marvellous singing voice?”

He managed something akin to a smile. “I did not—or perchance I forgot.”

She angled her head to the side as he bent to kiss her cheek. “I am sure I have never heard a better one.”

“I beg to differ, Elizabeth,” said Graham. “While your voice may not be perfect, there is a sweetness and an expression of feeling that I have never heard the likes of before; I compare it favourably to any famous opera singer.”

“I have always preferred Elizabeth’s singing voice to any other,” Darcy said.

Her eyes shone with amusement. “Now both of you are making statements too outrageous to be believed.” She patted his arm and gave him a fond smile. “Fitzwilliam may be pardoned for such aggrandisement: it is his duty as my husband to exaggerate my good qualities as much as possible.” She turned with a raised eyebrow towards Graham. “You, sir, have no excuse.”

Raising a hand over his heart, Graham staggered backward, as if shot by a musket. “Madam, you wound me. I would not say such a thing unless I felt it to be the absolute truth.”

Darcy rolled his eyes. What a theatrical fool!

Biting back her grin, Elizabeth said, “Shall we go in and have dinner now?”

Graham patted his stomach. “By all means, let us eat.”

During dinner, while Graham was busy eating enough food for two men, Elizabeth queried Darcy for details of the interview with Mr. Boyle. He told her of the man’s experience and gave her the good news.

Her face lit up with a dazzling smile. “I am so relieved you found a man suitable for the job. I understand he will not start for a fortnight, and he will need time to learn the duties particular to Pemberley, but I can expect my husband to have more free time at last. Dare I hope we could plan a trip somewhere? Mayhap to the seaside?”

Buoyed by the vision of her beautiful countenance brimming with anticipation, energy infused his body. Yes—a brilliant notion. He would take her on a holiday. He would have taken her to Margate or Brighton last year, but one problem or another had always come up to postpone the trip. The picturesque sandy beaches, the peaceful rhythm of the waves, and the majestic beauty of the ocean could not fail to delight her. What could be more enticing than Elizabeth barefoot on the sand with her dress hitched up as she ran in and out of the water?

“I do not see why not. We can make plans for the trip next month.”

At that moment, a servant girl who had brought out a tray of bread bumped into the sideboard whilst staring at Graham. Darcy narrowed his eyes and let out a deep breath. Mrs. Reynolds would have to speak with the servants; their conduct around Graham was unacceptable.

About the Author

After a lifetime of reading, and a decade or more of slinging books at the library and herding cats with the PTA, Rebecca began to turn her experiences into books of her own, publishing her first in 2012. That failed to quiet the voices in her head, but seemed to entertain a number of readers, so she wrote some more, which generated still more voices. Despite the unlimited distractions provided by raising sons to the point of leaving home (and preparing to move without forwarding address if necessary to retain that empty nest), not to mention the mountains that keep calling (very hard to resist the urging of something the size of the Sierra Nevada), she has managed to pen a total of 9 books so far.

For those who enjoy murder and mayhem with a sense of humor, Rebecca’s Pismawallops PTA mysteries (Death By Ice Cream and Death By TromboneDeath By Adverb, and Death By Library) provide insights into what PTA moms are really like. If you prefer tall tales and even less of a grip on reality, visit Skunk Corners in The Ninja Librarian and the sequels Return to Skunk Corners and The Problem of Peggy. For those who’ve always thought that fantasy was a bit too high-minded, a stumble through rescues and escapes with Halitor the Hero, possibly the most hapless hero to ever run in fear from any and all fair maidens, should set you straight.

Why does Rebecca write so many different kinds of books (there’s even an alphabet picture book in the mix!)? We could argue that it’s because she has a rich lifetime of experience that requires expression in—squirrel!

Frigid February air has settled into the bones of the Blue Ridge Mountains, making for a slow foxhunting season, though “Sister” Jane Arnold’s enthusiasm is not so easily deterred. With the winter chill come tweed coats, blazing fireplaces—and perhaps another to share the warmth with, as the bold hunting scarlets worn by the men in Sister Jane’s hunting club make the hearts of women flutter—until someone’s stops entirely.

Harry Dunbar, a member of the Jefferson Hunt club with a penchant for antique furniture, is found with his skull cracked at the bottom of the stairs to a local store. There are no telltale signs of foul play—save for the priceless (and stolen) Erté fox ring in his pocket. Sister and her hounds set out to uncover the truth: was this simply an accident—a case of bad luck—or something much more sinister?

Steeped in the deep traditions of Virginia horse country and featuring a colorful cast of characters both two- and four-legged, Scarlet Fever is another spirited mystery from Rita Mae Brown.

Fire, Fog and Water (Sgt. Windflower Mysteries)
Mystery
8th in Series
Ottawa Press and Publishing (October 8, 2019)
Print Length: 280 pages

Synopsis

Sergeant Winston Windflower and his trusty crew at the Grand Bank detachment of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police have more than a few mysteries on their hands. Windflower suspects that the three cases—a homicide, a near-homicide and a fire on Coronation Street—are somehow connected, but how is proving difficult to determine, especially now that he must battle his unusually cranky mood, the never-ending winter that has gripped the coastal region of Newfoundland and his new, power-hungry boss.

In Fire, Fog and Water, award-winning author Mike Martin is true to form, retaining the light crime genre for which he is known while delving into the most perplexing social issues of our time, including mental health, addictions and workplace harassment. Windflower must not only solve the drug-and-death crimes that threaten the otherwise tranquil lives of Grand Bank’s residents, he must resolve his own internal conflicts before they consume him as surely as the blaze that engulfed the house on Coronation Street
