Synopsis

 

In October 1939, Albert Einstein warns President Franklin D. Roosevelt that Nazi Germany is actively pursuing an atomic bomb and urges him to make sure that the United States develops the bomb first. Roosevelt heeds the warning and launches the “Manhattan Project” in June 1942.

In October 1942, Roosevelt tells Einstein that prudence calls for the U.S. to have a back-up plan to the Manhattan Project in case Hitler gets the bomb first. Roosevelt commissions Einstein to secretly construct a usable time travel machine code named the “White Hole Project.”

In June 1974, an adventurous group of teenage friends, who call themselves the “Bad Love Gang,” discover a tunnel leading to the White Hole Project. They learn how to use the time machine and become the first known humans to travel back in time and return. Their mission is to save Jews and Gypsies from the Holocaust in November 1944 by using a U.S. Air Force B-17 bomber that was known as “The Phantom Fortress.”

On this Wednesday night in June 1942, something happened that forever changed the course of history for Indian Spring Airfield in the remote southwestern Nevada desert.

As they all approached within a couple hundred yards of the site, it became apparent that this was not a plane crash.

What Bucky and his small team of enlisted soldiers were looking at from one hundred yards away was a metallic-appearing space craft that glowed white, and the blue tint was emanating from the material that was leaking or extruding from breaches in the hull due to the crash damage.

He was more excited to discover the truth than afraid for his own safety.

Everything began to change at Indian Springs Airfield as the reality of the alien spaceship cash began to sink in.

One day before the alien ship crashed at Area 51 (AKA Groom Dry Lake, or Indian Springs Airfield) on June 16, 1942, Roosevelt had approved the all-out effort for the U.S. to be the first country to build the atomic bomb.

What has not been known until recently was that there was a separate, even more secretive project running parallel to the Manhattan Project, one that far fewer people knew even existed.

I happen to believe that time travel in the wrong hands could be far more devastating to world history and mankind than atomic weaponry.

I saw a sign with the phrase The White Hole. My heart jumped in my chest and time stood still; my life would never be the same again.

We set out to learn about the secrets of the White Hole and this marvelous time machine, how it worked, and what we could do with this life-changing discovery.

The more I read about the Holocaust, the more it haunted me.

Being from Oak Ridge, all of us knew about the Manhattan Project, and had since we were very young.

This will be an adventure above and beyond any movie or science fiction novel any of us have seen or read, only this is big, real, and bad!

A virtually brand-new Eighth Air Force B-17G Flying Fortress named Bad Love, on its third mission ever, hijacked and commandeered by the Bad Love Gang, was about to bomb a Nazi German oil refinery.

It’s time to stand and deliver! Let’s see if our grand plan will sink or swim.

Our take off into the destiny of time travel in a WWII B-17 named Bad Love…

I already knew that we were going to have to shoot our way out of here.

What happened next was one of those moments of hope and destiny that defy gravity.

When we discovered time travel, we made it our first mission to save some Holocaust souls from certain death.

From my perspective and that of the other fourteen-time travelers, the time travel process in no way matched what Hollywood or television shows had made it out to be. It was a totally different experience!

Review

There is something about time travel novels that I really enjoy.  Maybe it is the characters in another time period and adapting, maybe it is the intertwining of past and present, or maybe it is learning something new about either a person or place.

I have read several other books by this duo and have always enjoyed the research, settings, and characters.  This book is no different but with a twist.  Because it is based on Marilyn Monroe’s life for this week or two in 1954, it made me think about who she was as a person, what her life might have been like, and what it could have been had it not ended so soon.  I appreciated the work the authors put forth in portraying her life and the struggles she faced as a celebrity.

Darla was an outstanding protagonist.  She was dealing with some of her own issues and is a huge fan of Marilyn’s, yet nothing she does is able to change time or history.  I think she learned a bit about herself as well and that maybe life wasn’t so bad in 1998.  Her relationship with her Dad may have been trying, but he still loved her and wanted nothing but the best for her.

I really enjoyed the ending…I won’t say much so as not to spoil the book, but there are several revelations that were intriguing.

If you enjoy time travel novels, this is a novel you will want to pick up soon.

Convinced that the lantern is a threat to their future happiness, Eve and Patrick decide to destroy it.

But the lantern has more power than they could have ever imagined.  Once the lantern is destroyed, Eve’s life is completely changed.  She must set off on an adventure, in a struggle that will return her to the past, where she will learn the secret of the lantern’s origin and delve into the farthest reaches of her heart.

 

 

 

Review

I am a time-travel book junkie and this series always keeps me engrossed and wondering what could possibly happen next!  It is also a story about love, adventure, and hope.

This is the third book in a series and while it stands alone I suggest reading The Christmas Eve Letter first and then The Christmas Eve Daughter next.  These two books will help you understand the relationship between Eve and Patrick, and introduce you to other characters so you will have a better understanding of the storyline.

Eve and Patrick finally have the life they wanted until a mishap regarding the lantern throws a wrench into their lives that could potentially forever alter their lives.

The authors weave a story that melds the past and the present seamlessly. Eve ends up back in the late 1800s with her best friend Joni and while Eve knows what to do to fit in, Joni has a harder time but quickly finds herself enjoying this time period especially when she meets a handsome doctor.  Could it be love at first sight?   There is also science in the book, bringing in Thomas Edison and Nikola Tesla (mostly Tesla) with an explanation about the lanterns from Tesla.

While there are various characters, this book is about Eve and her love for Patrick and making sure she doesn’t have to go through life without him.  She endures the time period where women are not treated well but she is able to bring hope to some people she meets.  I don’t want to give away too much of the story but trust me when I saw that this series is gripping from the time travel and history and there is a love story that doesn’t end.

As you can see, this book checked off a lot of boxes for me and what I like to read.  (Ok, the fantasy genre depends on the book).  But this melds the past and present, time travel, and even some religious aspects with great ease.  I noticed that the book was well researched because many facts of Albert Einstein’s life matched up to another book I read last year, so that made me happy that I didn’t have to run off and figure out which book was right and which one was wrong!

This is a classic good vs. evil plot line – but with some unique twists.  There are light workers which could translate to Guardian Angel in a way since that is how one appears to young Albert when he needs some help.  They are on the religious side because there are references to Jesus, Moses and other biblical figures you might recognize.  Then there is Raka who has managed to survive many centuries only to awake to create havoc in his quest for the Compass which he feels will grant him anything he desires.

There are many characters that are woven into this story that add dimension and kept me engaged in the story from start to finish.  The story was a fairly steady pace until the end as the conflict between Einstein and Raka escalated and the story really took off and moved at a fast pace.

There are times that I gasped at certain events that crushed my heart and other times that I was amazed at the depths of evil from various characters.  I wondered about their sanity but they were the right balance to offset the good characters so that the story wasn’t overly sweet and innocent.

We enjoyed this book and give it 5 paws up!

Synopsis

They are pursued by Simon Beaumont, esteemed knight in the service of King Edward who has also passed between times. Having learned that Amy’s son will kill him—he seeks to kill the infant James first.

The book concludes with MacDougall’s attack on Glenmirril, Amy and Angus’s race to be there and Shawn’s attempt to reach the mysterious tower through the battling armies.

Review

I have to state this right off the bat – this is the 3rd book in a series, if you have not read the first two books, do not pick this one up until you do.  Or you will be like me and thoroughly confused because you didn’t know it was part of a series and the beginning of the book makes absolutely no sense!  Ok, so once I realized I was jumping midway into a series I changed how I looked at the content of the book as I was reading.

I have always enjoyed time travel novels and this one was even more interesting due to the time periods that it covers.  The story jumps from the 1300s to the present.  I think the first two books would give the reader a better grasp on what is happening in this book and how Shawn and Niall jumped about 700 years.  Amy is on a mission to find signs of Niall (who really belongs in the 1300s) by marks he might have left at various sites.  Shawn is from the present and is in the 1300s with Niall and coincidently they are mistaken for each other all the time.  Twins separated by centuries!  Amy is pregnant and I’m sure she is doing a lot of the searching so she can tell her child about its father.  However, there is another man in the picture, Angus, a Scottish Police Detective.

I loved reading the Scottish history and the details. I have never been to Scotland, and while I hope to perhaps visit one day, the descriptions of the various sites held me captive and I was able to imagine each historic site.

The characters are a mixed bag as I mentioned above – Shawn is arrogant, Niall is loyal (perhaps overly so), Amy can be wishy-washy, and Angus just wants to do whatever he can to make Amy’s life better, and to be a part of her life.  But all the personalities round out the book and make even the unlikeable character tolerable.

Overall I enjoyed the book but the only thing that bugged me is that when the story would flip to the present it would sometimes be italicized (which makes sense when Amy is thinking to herself) but other times not.  There was no consistency to the formatting.  And of course, the way the book started, I was very lost and had no idea what was going on in the story.  As I mentioned above, if you read the first two books and then this book, you probably won’t be lost like me.

Overall we give it 3 1/2 paws up.

Her time travel series, The Blue Bells Chronicles, set in modern and medieval Scotland, has garnered praise and comparisons to writers as diverse as Diana Gabaldon and Dostoevsky. Her poetry has been published in The Moccasin and The Martin Lake Journal 2017.

She has been featured in newspapers, on the radio, TV, has spoken for regional book events, and hosted the radio program Books and Brews. She currently teaches writing at Minneapolis Community and Technical College.

Fun fact 2 – Michael served all 38 years in public education at the same school, Chapel Hill ISD, Mt. Pleasant, TX. He served as the district’s first Athletic Director, their first Assistant principal, and served as the district’s first ever Jr. High Principal.

Review

This is the sequel to The Christmas Eve Letter. While this book stands on its own, it does reference how Eve and Patrick get together and other incidents, so I highly suggest reading that book first before delving into this novel.

Time Travel is very intriguing and I wonder how I would handle situations if I found myself tossed back in time. Probably not as well as Eve seems to handle all the situations put in her path plus being in a time that she is not as familiar. I know I am not a history buff, so trying to know what will happen and when would be hard for me to adapt.

Eve and Patrick are married and doing an internet search reveals that Patrick has a daughter he never knew. He already feels out of sorts being 130 years in the future, but to find out you had a child that dies by nefarious means is too much for him to take. He insists on going back to save his daughter one way or another. Of course, he thinks he can do it on his own. He should know better being married to Eve that she is not going to let that happen. Thus begins their journey.

It is interesting how they travel back and forth in time – through a lantern. The fact that this lantern does not travel with them is interesting. It does make for a good story because Eve and Patrick have to track down what happened to the lantern from when they left in 1885. They are lucky that the lantern was recoverable but not without a lot of effort.

I enjoyed the new characters, an update on characters from the first book, and the possibility for more books because there are some characters that are mentioned but we don’t know what happened to them. I can’t spoil the story, but let’s just say that things changed from when Patrick & Eve left to when they returned and these were pretty major changes.

Review

This is the second time travel book I have read by this author. Much like the first book, I am amazed by the research done into her characters, especially since with this book it is a known woman from the past – Mata Hari. From the moment Trace falls back in time, the descriptions of people and towns created a vision in my mind and I could imagine myself there observing the situations.

I was fascinated by Trace’s connection to the past and how that affected her near the end of the book. She had to be quick on her feet in the early 1900’s and thankfully she was very familiar with Mata Hari’s life and what was happening in that part of the world since this was during WWI.  She also had to make sure she didn’t change history, or at least not too much.

This book captivated me to the end!

If you like books that delve into past lives along with time travel, this is a book you should pick up and read!

Review

I’m a sucker for time travel books. Just the thought about going to another time period in the past and learning how to adapt to what was customary and usual can be mind boggling. But this book takes a bit of a twist – there is a home that resides on fey lines and travel back and forth between time periods happens quite often. Another twist is that one might spend a year or so in one time period, but when they go back to the original time period it is like no time has passed at all.

The romance between Cora and Simon is sweet. While there are some miscommunications at times, watching their love for each other unfold made my heart happy. It wasn’t easy at times because of a few issues, but as any good romance they made it through to each other. I also enjoyed reading their letters to each other and the P.S. that were added to the bottom of each letter. They told so much more about the characters than the body of the letter.

I think this might be (or will be) a series and I can’t wait to read other books. There are characters that mention their time periods (not current day as this book) and hopefully there will be books about their story.

Prologue

1500 years before

Lady Nymue, her mother, is rising from the mere like a spirit: tall, slow like a dream, over-gown falling in slim folds from her waist. Vivianne sees her in a haze of mist, like magic, an illusion. She feels it, that enchantment, and it is enfolding her, but making her shiver, too. Her life-giver, robes dry despite the water, is coming towards her as she stands anxiously on the bank, waiting impatiently, calling out urgently, hopping from one foot to the other, tangling her feet in her earth-sweeping kirtle, longing to rejoin her playmates who are chasing around the village pretending to be Roman soldiers. Her mother, reaching out a hand to her, is shaking her head, but laughing. Be more patient, my little Lady Vivianne, she says, I have not completed my rituals, but let me wrap you in my cloak, for I must return to the mere. But she is only a little girl and something is making her feel cold, frightened. No, she calls, sticking out her lower lip, I want to play! I want to be Honorius this time! They promised! About the Author

Award-winning author Julia Ibbotson is obsessed with the medieval world and concepts of time travel. She read English at Keele University, England (after a turbulent but exciting gap year in Ghana) specialising in medieval studies, and has a PhD in linguistics.
