Review

These 7 novellas are perfect when you are looking for a bite or a snack to read and don’t have time for a full-length novel.

The stories cover major holidays and are set in the past, the present, and even in various countries.

I enjoyed reading each one and being exposed to a new cozy author and will be looking for more works by these authors.

Sometimes I solved the mystery before the reveal, and sometimes I didn’t. About my average speed when reading a mystery.

I liked that there are recipes at the end and there are a few that I want to try out soon.

We give this book 4 paws up.

Review

These six short stories are bound to entertain you. They range from spicy to mild and different situations. They are perfect when you are short on time or don’t want to put a long book down.

I have read four of the six so far and have enjoyed each one from the characters, the storyline, and the setting.

While each one entertained, I found Dare Me quite fascinating in regards to the plot. I have never heard of a Mistress Dispeller but apparently, this is a thing. Someone that breaks up affairs of the rich and famous.

Cop an Attitude is a spin-off of one of the author’s series but I didn’t realize it until the end. I enjoyed seeing one of the gang in this book and I found the relationship between Waverly and Peter quite interesting especially once she learns who he really is and why he has been treating her the way he has in the first part of the book. But love wins out!

Bite Me has dogs…that won me over immediately! I also liked the unbending chemistry teacher and his fear of dogs but is he willing to move past that for the right woman?

Pick up this book next time you are looking for a little sweet and a little spicy, it won’t disappoint!

We give it 4 paws up.

Synopsis

Summer on the seaside . . . a perfect place for romance.

Join us for three novellas in one collection:

The New Countess, by Josi S. Kilpack

Diane knows why the earl asked her to marry him; he needed a mother for his daughter, an heir for his title, and a hostess to assist with his position in Parliament. With two sons of her own, and no security to speak of, she never thought twice about accepting his proposal. Summering at his holiday cottage at the sea was meant to be reward for a busy first year as the new countess, and a time for her to rest before their baby is born. She is expecting lazy days on the beach with the children, simple meals, and keeping her own schedule. When the earl surprises her with a visit, she does her best not to resent the intrusion. When she learns that he came for the sole purpose of being with her and getting to know her better, she realizes that perhaps this marriage can be more than she expected. Is she ready for him to know her and love her and explore this new possibility together? She wants to be, but it is not an easy thing to let go of expectations and open up to an entirely new way of life.

Mishaps and Memories, by Martha Keyes

Judith Jardine’s one chance at a brilliant match is doomed from the start when she is ignored and then mocked by the ton’s most sought-after gentleman. Under a gloomy cloud of failure, Judith is exiled to a seaside cottage to spend the summer helping her sister—and living a life far below the one she experienced for her week in Brighton. When she discovers the man responsible for her misfortune unconscious on the beach, she heeds her better impulses and has him brought to the cottage to be seen to. But James Carlisle has no recollection of who he is, what happened to him, or how he has wronged her, and Judith sees the opportunity to teach him a valuable lesson—unless the deception and her feelings get the best of her first.

Moonlight Summer, by Heather B. Moore

Oscar Rosewell’s life is not lacking in many things even though he lives on the fringes of society due to his father’s ruined reputation. He’s sworn off having any personal relationships with ton members—his only interest lies in keeping his business thriving. He’s content with his day-to-day anonymity, and business keeps his heart from getting exposed. It’s safer that way. Until Oscar meets Miss Dorothea Atkinson. A woman capturing his interest is a rare thing, but Miss Atkinson is nearly engaged to a man of her parents’ choosing. Would it be wrong to wish for something to go terribly wrong between the couple? Soon, Oscar learns that wishing can become a reality, but often, the price is an even heavier thing to pay.

Excerpt

Moonlight Summer, by Heather B. Moore

Eight trunks and seven valises packed into two carriages, and still Dottie had the feeling she was forgetting something as she stood in the doorway of a London townhome. Oh, no—all the baggage wasn’t for her alone. She could only claim one trunk and one valise. A feat for a twenty-year-old lady, to be sure. But Dottie’s mother had given her strict instructions to pack modestly. She’d bring along her small sketchbook in her reticule in the morning.

“That way, my dear, you’ll have to shop for what you need,” her mother had said earlier that day as her pale blue eyes sparkled. “You have a new father now. And he will provide for us.”

Her mother’s color was heightened these past few months, and her voice had taken on a higher octave. Perhaps it was because of her new marriage? Still a blushing bride?

Dottie didn’t want to think about her own mother, at thirty-eight, having a romantic time with Viscount Fisher of Turnberry, Dottie’s new stepfather.

But there was no denying it.

Last night after supper, her mother had announced that she was with child.

Well.

Dottie was already feeling misplaced enough with a new home, three new stepsisters, and a new stepfather who said hardly a word to her.

Now, Dottie knew why they were quitting the London season early. A season that was meant for her, at least originally. She’d missed her first season because she and her mother were in mourning for Father. And her second one? Her mother had secured the husband, not Dottie.

One day, Dottie might find it amusing, but at this very moment, she could hear someone crying. Wailing, really.

“Dorothea!” Her mother’s voice echoed from the upper level.

Dottie turned from the doorway and all the preparations. She hurried up the stairs, wishing for one quiet moment. She’d never appreciated those moments before, when she was the only child to her parents, Lady Atkinson and Lord Atkinson, who had been the Baron of Rutland.

“I don’t want to leave my dollhouse!” This was followed by another wail.

Dottie stepped into the nursery, where her mother, the nursemaid, and the housekeeper were all surrounding six-year-old Alice. The young girl was as fair-haired as Dottie was dark.

“Dorothea, do something,” her mother said, touching her perfectly coifed hair as if a piece of it had strayed. “My nerves can’t take this. I’m expecting, you know.”

I know, Dottie wanted to say, but instead, she crossed to Alice and knelt in front of her.

The child’s clear green eyes were filled with tears, and the flush on her cheeks told Dottie she was about a half a minute from a full breakdown. Wailing was only the beginning. Dottie’s heart went out to this young girl, though. A child who’d lost her mother last year. Just as Dottie had lost her father.

“What do you want to take on our trip to the seaside?” Dottie said in a quiet, calm voice.

Alice sniffled. “My dollhouse.”

Dottie didn’t miss the fact that her mother and the housekeeper had quit the room. Only the nursemaid, Mary, remained, hovering by the door.

“This one?” Dottie said, resting her hand atop the roof of the nearby dollhouse. “I love it too.”

“You do?” Alice’s eyes widened. “But you don’t play with dolls. You’re too old.”

Dottie smiled. “Perhaps. Do you know if you take the dollhouse to the seaside, then we can’t take all your favorite dresses? There won’t be room for both.” She could see the understanding growing in the girl’s eyes. “What will you wear? A blanket?”

Alice’s small, rosy lips curved upwards.

“Oh, I know. You can wear my shawl.”

Alice giggled. “It’s too big for me.”

Dottie touched a finger to her chin. “Let’s see, then. How about you wear one of my dresses?”

“That’s too big!” Another giggle.

Dottie held back a laugh. “Oh well, I guess we’ll have to bring your dresses. But I have an idea for your dollhouse.”

Alice’s green eyes rounded. “You do?”

“We’ll put a special drape over it so that it will stay here, safe and sound, for you,” Dottie said. “Nothing will be touched, and it won’t even get dusty.”

A line appeared between Alice’s eyebrows, but she turned and gazed at the dollhouse for a long moment. “All right.”

Dottie’s heart did a victory leap. “Wonderful. Now, let’s find the drape that you want. It has to be very pretty, just like the house.”

The Cozy Choice

I have been writing and publishing cozy mysteries since 2016 and as of now, I have eleven single titles and two boxed sets under my belt in two different series. I first got into the genre because I liked the idea of the light-hearted mystery and the non-police protagonist helping to solve the case. Also, my dad is an avid Murder, She Wrote fan. Back when I started writing my first series, I stumbled on some general plot concepts that sparked my interest and I worked to adapt them for my own characters. I’d been thinking about some character names I’d come up with and tried to fit into an old story (not cozy) that hadn’t panned out, as they sometimes do, and I figured, why not see if they fit this genre instead!

And thus Kalina Greystone, comic shop owner, was born. With so many cozies out there, it’s important to make one’s heroine’s unique and memorable. While a lot of cozies I was seeing at the time were older ladies saving the day, which is amazing, I wanted to write something a little different and so my characters tend to be younger women in their 30s around my own age. Hey, they say write what you know! While I’ve never been a comic shop owner or a Reverend or served in the military, these types of things called to me and I listened. I think I enjoyed creating Kalina’s world so much because it gave me an outlet at the time to share some of my nerd culture loves.

I think getting creative with what your protagonist does not only gives you a fun twist that can help with marketing but can also end up being a good way and reason for them to get involved in cases, as is the general requirement for a cozy mystery. My next series as my Reverend Margot Quade series finishes is a paranormal cozy with a young witch protagonist and I’m super excited to see her journey. I, of course, had to give her a fun profession and she works at a marijuana dispensary. I’m having a blast figuring out her world and the other people that populate the small town, including a bed and breakfast owner who may end up getting her own series.

You’ll also find a diverse group of heroines in the pages of Mystery Follows Her. As we were putting this anthology together, it was important to all of the authors to share their own unique take of the genre with their chosen leading lady. You’ll find young sleuths and older mystery seekers spread out across the globe in all kinds of professions and circumstances. You’ll also get a wide range of cases. Now, I’m not shy about killing people in my books, but I know some readers and writers prefer to stay away from the dead bodies, especially in cozies. But, I’m always mindful of not being too gory when I do have one of my leading ladies happen upon a body.

If you haven’t already, check out the anthology. I suspect you’ll find some new-to-you authors and some new unique ladies to spend some time with solving crimes!

About the Authors

Two US Today bestselling authors are among these nine authors who hail from Germany, Italy, Northern Ireland, and the United States.

Their current and past occupations are diverse and include lawyer, perfumery shop owner, biology lecturer, marketing consultant, global house and pet sitter, interior designer, university campus minister, journalist, tea lady, arborist, bookseller and lottery archivist.

Their interests and hobbies are broad too. Here’s just a few: anthropology, walking and hiking, quilting, sailing, lindy hop dancing, suburban homesteading, sci-fi and urban fantasy, playing bagpipes, and poetry. While many have traveled and lived in places around the world that were new and exciting to them, one even lives in a tiny campervan that’s traversed several American states this year!

Yet as diverse as they are, they all share a love of cozy mysteries and telling a good tale. And that’s what they have done in this collection of stories and novellas that introduces readers to characters in each author’s cozy mystery series.

Short Story: “Sweet Retreat” from The Cast Iron Skillet Mystery Series by Jodi Rath

Jolie Tucker wished she had gone on a one-time date while the going was good. Now she finds herself spending an entire weekend in adjoining rooms in a suite at Sweet Retreat’s Spa with none other than Detective Mick Meiser. Jolie had been trepidatious since she found out he had made the highest bid at the date auction fund-raiser for the village’s local pet adoption charity. But the possibility of romance disappears when they stumble upon a red silk glove in the parking lot…that has a severed hand inside! Instead, the unlikely duo must investigate who the hand belongs to…and where the rest of the body is.

Review

If you are looking for a quick read over lunch or while waiting at the doctor, this story will fit that description.  I was delighted to learn more about Joie and Mick and see what happened after Mick won Jolie at an auction for a date.  Obviously crime happened.  It was interesting to see how it all came together in a shorter time frame and fewer pages.  There are a few twists and turns that might surprise you as much as they surprised me!

I hope to read the rest of the stories in the book sometime soon.

We give this story 4 paws up.

Review

Short stories, dogs, and murder – what a great combination!

This book has four short stories that each have a dog or two in them.  I think my favorites were the first and the third story.

The first story centers around a dog walker and a client hiring her to do some sleuthing to find a missing necklace.  She is able to narrow down the suspects but a major twist is thrown in and surprises everyone, me especially!

The second is a young couple purchase a home where the couple just left.  The neighbors have some crazy stories to tell about the couple and the wife keeps finding things in the house that were left behind.  There are some crazy things that happen and while the story is good I wanted to know more about how the story ended.  I can’t say too much but let’s just say that this could have gone on for many more pages to maybe tie up the loose ends.

The third story has a couple of mysteries – where are the painted rocks going that represents the passing of some pets and who killed Sean?  Another story where I was surprised when the killer was revealed.  I think I had some ideas about this character but not many.

The last story feels like it is set in England based on some of the descriptions and it just has a more European feel.  The main character is a person of interest simply because a suspected weapon ends up in his bag.  This story is a bit more “formal” for lack of a better word.  I suppose you could say it is more of a police procedural.  I found it interesting that he named his dog after his former girlfriend.  Either a sign of love or craziness! There are plenty of clues to determine who the killer is but it is interesting how it all comes together in the end.

You can’t lose picking up this book especially if you love dogs and mysteries.

Review

While I haven’t read all of the stories in this compilation, I have enjoyed what I have read so far. I think my favorite was Toxic Death by Sam Cheever. I was totally surprised when the murderer was revealed, did not see that one coming at all! And of course there were dogs involved and I love any story involving dogs.

All of these shorter stories gave me a taste of what the authors normally write and if I haven’t picked up their books before, I’m adding them to my towing TBR pile because I got caught up in some of the characters and want to know more about them and the crimes they help solve.

This is a great way to get a little taste of some potentially new cozy authors to you and could get you hooked on a few new authors.

Life is an extravaganza! figuring out how to hang tough and make the most of the wild ride is the challenge.

On my way to Oahu to join the rock musician and high school drop-out I had met in San Diego and married in Tijuana, I was nabbed by the police as a runaway. When the police let me go and the rock band broke up, my husband and I had to find another way to survive. Our next stop: Disney World where we trained to be chefs, courtesy of the Walt Disney World University. A GED for my husband and many more years of education landed us in academia at The Ohio State University. Retired now from my role as a professor of social work and behavioral science, I have picked up a long-time interest in writing fiction. I’m still married to the same sweet guy and live with him in the Palm Springs area. In addition to reading and writing fiction, I enjoy painting, hiking, hanging out with my handsome husband and tending to my Siamese kitties.

An award-winning and bestselling author I enjoy snooping into life’s mysteries with fun, fiction, & food—California style! My books include the Jessica Huntington Desert Cities Mystery series set in the Coachella Valley near Palm Springs, the Corsario Cove Cozy Mystery series set on California’s Central Coast, and The Georgie Shaw Cozy Mystery series set in Orange County, California–the OC. Coming soon: The Misadventures of Betsy Stark also set here in the Coachella Valley.

AVA MALLORY

AVA MALLORY has been a grade school teacher, a psychiatric technician, a dementia unit nurse manager, and a Hospice nurse. She has embarrassed herself in front of handsome celebrities, won vocal contests much to the chagrin of her children, survived a  major earthquake, and nearly drowned when she mistakenly thought a YMCA lifeguard asked her to dive into the deep end on her first day of swim lessons. She and her eternally annoyed children share their home with a massive collection of books and a never-ending supply of new book ideas.

Sandi Scott

Sandi Scott is a cozy mystery reader who finally found the courage to write the stories in her head and share them with others. She fell in love with mystery books when she first started reading Agatha Christie eons ago, although her favorite female sleuth will always be Harriet the Spy. She loves dogs, her family, her readers, and sweet treats — not necessarily in that order.

Susan Boles

Susan Boles is the award-winning author of the Lily Gayle Lambert Mystery Series and also writes romantic suspense in the Brotherhood Protectors series.

A lifelong long love of all things mysterious led Susan to write cozy mysteries. Nancy Drew and Trixie Belden were the first to show her that girls can be crime solvers. Agatha Christie showed her that even small towns have big secrets. And Phryne Fisher showed her lady detectives can be outrageously individual. She lives in Mississippi with her rescue mini dachshund, Lucy, and her rescue cat of no particular breed, Zimba.

Sam Cheever

USA Today Bestselling Author Sam Cheever writes mystery and suspense, creating stories that draw you in and keep you eagerly turning pages. Known for writing great characters, snappy dialogue, and unique and exhilarating stories, Sam is the award-winning author of 50+ books.

Anne R. Tan

Anne R. Tan fell in love with storytelling in elementary school, but decided to study engineering so she could get a “real job.” Her day job is her vacation from home and she moonlights as a writer to keep the voices inside her head under control. She is a toddler wrangler and a part-time short-order cook for her family. She is married to her version of Bob Vila who believes everything needs to be fixed, even if it’s already working. The koi fish in her pond are the only sane members of her household.

Synopsis

17 stories of difficult love, broken hearts, lost hope, and discarded truths. Love brings pain, vulnerability, and demands of revenge. Hardened Hearts spills the sum of darkness and light concerning the measures of love; including works from Meg Elison, author of The Book of the Unnamed Midwife (Winner of the Philip K. Dick Award), Tom Deady, author of Haven (Winner of the Bram Stoker Award for Superior Achievement in a First Novel), Gwendolyn Kiste, author of And Her Smile Will Untether the Universe and Pretty Marys All in a Row, and many more.

Hardened Hearts dips from speculative, horror, science fiction, fantasy, into literary and then out of the classifiable and into the waters of unpinned genres, but pure entertainment nonetheless.

Review

Enclosed in this book are 17 short stories that range from 3 pages to about 30 (I didn’t count on some of the longer ones!).

Most of these stories are dark and some can be depressing when you look at the storyline.  But at the same time, some of these stories have an underlying moral to the story that should not be overlooked.

I liked most of the stories as they intrigued me and took me on an adventure through another time and place.  Some I wished were longer because I felt like there was more than could be told.  A few ended abruptly and left me wanting to know what happened next.

Overall these stories were intriguing and it was not all hearts and roses, but rather the heartbreak that we all experience at one time or another.

We give it 3 1/2 paws.
