Synopsis

If you could open a door to anywhere, where would you go?

In New York City, bookseller Cassie Andrews is living an unassuming life when she is given a gift by a favourite customer. It’s a book – an unusual book, full of strange writing and mysterious drawings. And at the very front there is a handwritten message to Cassie, telling her that this is the Book of Doors, and that any door is every door .

What Cassie is about to discover is that the Book of Doors is a special book that bestows an extraordinary powers on whoever possesses it, and soon she and her best friend Izzy are exploring all that the Book of Doors can do, swept away from their quiet lives by the possibilities of travelling to anywhere they want.

But the Book of Doors is not the only magical book in the world. There are other books that can do wondrous and dreadful things when wielded by dangerous and ruthless individuals – individuals who crave what Cassie now possesses.

Suddenly Cassie and Izzy are confronted by violence and danger, and the only person who can help them is, it seems, Drummond Fox. He is a man fleeing his own demons – a man with his own secret library of magical books that he has hidden away in the shadows for safekeeping. Because there is a nameless evil out there that is hunting them all . . .

Because some doors should never be opened.

Review

Everything comes full circle.

When I first started reading this book, I thought it was going to be about one thing – a young woman who finds adventure. Well, yes, she does, but this book is so much more than just that. It is filled with suspense, action, danger, magic, and friendship.

Cassie is a young woman who has had a somewhat difficult life. She lost her mother at a very young age and was raised by her Grandfather until he was gone, too. I feel like she is a bit of a lost soul and floundering to find her place until she befriends Mr. Webber at the bookstore where she works. He leaves her The Book of Doors. This book allows her to travel anywhere in the world as long as there is an unlocked door. Forget transporters from Star Trek; this is the way to travel!

I loved her adventures, but her friend, and roommate, Izzy, is concerned about what the book could do. Is it safe? Will they be harmed? One wouldn’t think so until we come across a bunch of book hunters who want these books for their personal gain. These individuals are not to be trifled with in the least. They are hard and ruthless. However, this is the full-circle comment I made. While I can’t divulge much because it would give away a lot of the story, we learn how these individuals came to be who they are today. It might be a bit of a surprise when you get to that portion of the story (last 30%).

While I thought Cassie was a good protagonist, there was a period near the end when I did not like her and thought she was wishy-washy and weak. After everything that she had gone through, to act the way she did was mind-boggling. However, she does redeem herself after that.

The story has a varied cast of characters. All add depth to the story, which makes it even more engaging.

I highly recommend this book and give it 5 paws up.

“Age never matters; these things are about bravery and heart.”

Thirteen-year-old Condi Bloom’s dream is to learn to surf, but her laid-back beach town isn’t what it used to be. Big resort owners are taking over the cove. Worse, someone’s harassing the Beachlings, the mysterious old women living in the cliffs off Windy Hollow, a lonely tower of rock that people say is haunted. When a new surfer boy named Trustin shows up in town and invites Condi to a forbidden surfing spot, she’s swept into an extraordinary underwater adventure, where a surprising encounter with Koan, the Riddlemaster of the Sea, changes her life. Along with Trustin, his quirky twin and a mystical aquamarine surfboard, Condi learns the untold stories of the Beachlings, uncovering the timeless secrets of Windy Hollow.

Ebbing and flowing between reality and magic, times past and present, The Aquamarine Surfboard by Kellye Abernathy is a riveting beach tale about opening up to mystery, building community when and where you can — and discovering the ocean is filled with magic—the really BIG kind—the kind that changes the world.

I was swept away by this middle-grade novel that is more than just a story; it is a reminder to do good in this world.

Condi wants nothing more than to learn how to surf, but money is tight since her parents died and she moved in with her grandmother, Grand Ella. But that doesn’t keep her from watching the surfers and wishing to be one of them. However, an ill-fated event throws her into a world of magic and a task that she won’t be able to remember once she leaves that world.

This story blends the past with the present, the downtrodden with the upper class, and the popular and regular kids. There is an air of mystery surrounding the story tied to a former spa/resort and some of the Beachlings that live in the caves above the cove. I won’t share too many details because it might give away a lot of the story…but as you read, things will come to light that ties back to the past. This includes Condi’s new friends, Trustin and Marissa, twins that arrived in town one day.

Young girls (and boys, too) will enjoy this coming-of-age story and perhaps might find a bit of themselves in this book. They might be the science geek, the athlete, or the dreamer. No matter how they see themselves, this book will share joy, sadness, grief, and love in a way that any reader can relate to.

The shorter chapters make it easier to stop if necessary, but you might find yourself reading whenever you have a spare moment, enjoying the poetic prose and caring characters. You will even find some poems within the pages expanding your horizons and perhaps providing an interest in searching out more by the poets referenced.

Condi’s journey is hers, but we might find ourselves in her shoes or remember times in our own lives that mirror Condi’s.

This was a wonderful tale, and we give it 5 paws up.

This time, the club chooses a mystery that takes place in a quaint western town – in the old Wild West. That sounds like great fun, until they arrive in the dusty old town in the Arizona desert, among cowboys and saloons. They discover that the outhouse isn’t the worse thing about this trip.

The good news is that Paige, Glo, Zell, Frank, and the other members of the club discover plenty of surprises here, and they have a great time visiting a piece of history. They’ll get to live through many exciting moments as they unravel this cozy mystery story.

Review

This is such a fun series, and I think everyone needs to rush out and read it and soon!

Paige and Glo inherited an inn from their great-grandmother, and in the basement is a magical library. It takes them and six others in their book club into the book to solve the mystery before they are returned home. In this installment, there is a special guest but no spoilers from me!

The book club is thrown into the Wild West, the late 1800s, and many of the amenities they are used to do not exist. They must adapt to not having a phone or even a camera at their fingertips. Luckily, the inn travels with them, and they can still have some creature comforts from home. I think I’d rather use indoor plumbing than an outhouse!

Turns out that there are a couple of mysteries to solve that are intertwined, but they don’t know this until much later. But the gang does well at finding clues and solving the mystery in the end.

I am always drawn into this series because it is so unique, or at least it is to me. I enjoy the banter between the characters, especially the mother/son duo. Forrest is more worldly than his mother would want to admit, but she still tries to shelter him whenever possible. Frank, the talking cat, can be a bit over the top, but he adds flair to the story. Because they end up in paranormal cozies, no one is surprised when he speaks.

I don’t think I figured out the mystery ahead of time. But I enjoyed sorting through the clues with the characters and wondering where the truth would land.

Definitely a series I will continue to read! We give it 5 paws up.

Review

This book is just the right length and topic for middle-grade readers. It contains a little bit of everything for the younger reader – fantasy, magic, adventure, and introspection.

Gwendolyn is an aspiring journalist but is also a dream-shifter. Apparently, if she is woken abruptly from a dream where she has changed forms, she emerges as that form. In this case, an elk. Imagine her surprise when that happened, which happened right before elk hunting season. That could be dangerous for a young girl that is now in elk form.

This is a journey for her as she learns to adapt to her new form, trying to discover if she can change back, and meeting new people that may or may not be able to help her.

I thought it was amazing that everyone just accepted her as an elk. There was some disbelief, but they eventually accepted it as well. She learns how to adapt to not having hands and dealing with antlers that seem to keep growing.

This was a surprisingly fun read, and we give it 4 paws up.

Guest Post

I’ll admit, it was hard to write this blog post. I sat here, staring at the screen for days, trying to come up with something compelling and maybe even a little funny. Not feeling too funny today, though. A lot on my mind, mostly missing my cat, Marvin. He died in July, after fifteen years together, and it still hurts even now, months later. You don’t just forget your best friend. It’s a wound that never really heals. You just learn to adapt, like you would to a missing limb.

But that brings me to what I’d like to talk about, I suppose: writer’s block. I’ve been a writer since I was a teenager, and Lord knows writer’s block has hit me off and on throughout the years. This happens to every writer. Real life encroaches on our creative spaces and shoves everything out the window, replacing it with the worries and crises that interfere with, you know, everything.

For me it is the death of my cat, my father’s failing health, and my own disabilities rearing their ugly head. It’s choked my creativity down to the vague trickle of a drought-stricken stream, and now I can’t seem to get my butt in gear when it comes to the things I want to be writing and should be writing—and the ADHD sure doesn’t help matters, either.

So how do you beat it? I’ll be honest, sometimes you don’t. Sometimes, you have to ride it out, go with the flow until you come to the ocean of words. Then you have to remember how to swim. It’s a struggle, and there’s no one way to break the cycle. Some people pick up a distracting hobby. Some go to therapy. Others try to power through it, forcing words onto the page just to make them exist. And for some people, those things may work.

I suppose my message to other writers struggling with writer’s block is that it is not your fault. It could be your circumstances, it could be neurodivergence interference, it could be any number of things, but you don’t control how your brain processes the words in your head. They may dry up and you have to wait for the rain, or it may be raining too much, and you need it to just stop for a while. Either way, you can’t blame yourself, so don’t.

A final piece of advice: don’t underestimate the power of fanfiction as a writing tool. I wouldn’t be here without it. I think the worst bout of writer’s block kept me from writing for several years, before I broke my streak with a short little fanfiction about hockey boys from a webcomic. Try taking someone else’s characters and playing in their sandbox for a while. Write little post-episode/film tidbits, or a short story in which the characters of a fantasy epic find themselves in a modern-day coffeeshop. Write a 100,000 word epic tale of angst, ending in the main characters riding off into the sunset.

Bottom line: Don’t give up and don’t be too hard on yourself.

And hey, if you really can’t make the words obey, try writing about that. It worked for me, because now this blog post is done, and I can go eat cookies now. J

Synopsis

Paige and her joyful Aunt Glo have learned that the home they inherited comes with a magical library. They put together a book club group of loveable kooks to explore the magic. They’ve recovered from their first book journey, and they all agree on their next book which takes place on a cruise ship bound for Hawaii. Problem is, they were so excited about the cruising idea that they didn’t read the entire blurb on the back of the book. (“It was entirely too long,” explains Zell.) Once on the ship, they meet a charming and likeable man who blends seamlessly into their motley group. Too bad they don’t know why he’s so scarce during the day but shows up to join them every evening for dinner, drinks, and a show. When a dead body shows up on board, their new friend is labeled a suspect. Can they help him out by finding the real murderer? Or is he the real murderer? The book club will need to solve the case to get off the ship, out of the book, and back to their home.

Review

This is a light, whimsical cozy that has such an intriguing premise – the characters are transported into a book to solve a murder. The book is written while they are figuring out the details, so there is no wrong or right way to investigate.

While it isn’t necessary to read the books in order, I think you will gain a lot more insight into the characters and watch them grow. Ok, so this is only book two, but I imagine there will be a lot more growth between now and future books, so start with the first book now!

Paige, Glo, and the gang have a new member in their book club, Million. He was ordered to join by a judge, and this isn’t the first time that has happened with one of the book club members. He is a cranky 82-year-old but has a lot to offer, especially once they arrive aboard the cruise ship to solve the mystery. I love that they can pick whatever book and setting and be transported there. In this case, their inn becomes the 20th floor of the cruise ship. That is a magical paranormal book for you; all rules are set aside.

I love the interactions between the book club members and the book’s characters. In this case, there are vampires on the cruise ship. This causes a stir when someone turns up dead, and it looks like he was killed by a vampire draining his blood. As you cipher through the book and the clues, when all is revealed, you might find yourself as surprised as I would by who the killer was and their motivation. Definitely not someone I suspected in the least.

I have loved everything that this author has written so far, and I would have been the first to tell you that paranormal-type books weren’t my preference. I have been converted!

I am looking forward to the next book in this series to see where they end up and since a book club member stayed in the book, who will be the new addition to the club?

We give this book 5 paws up.

Review

This has been a delightful series to read. There is something about the characters, setting, and mysteries that draw me in and keep me coming back to Destiny Falls.

While this book could be read as a standalone, you will be better off starting at the beginning of the series to truly understand how Hayden came to Destiny Falls, meet the rest of the family, and have a better grasp of the dynamics of this town and island.

The town will be attending a medieval festival on another island and everyone is excited. However, they don’t know the true story behind the festival, at least not in time to not attend. Even though everyone is in frantic preparations for the festival, a dead body is still found and this time in Hayden’s newspaper office. What they uncover is more than they expected and many were surprised at the turn of events. There are a few suspects but new details thwart their efforts to uncover the killer quickly.

We are introduced to the Knitting Club when Hayden is told to go undercover to try and learn some information from one of the members. I love the name of the yarn shop, Knitty Gritty, and while I love the thought of knitting, it isn’t something I have tried myself yet. Maybe one day. There is a surprise member that Hayden discovers at her first meeting. You might never guess who and I’m not going to tell you, so pick up the book and find out.

There are so many characters to love in this series from Bear the personal chef for the Caldwell family to Han, Hayden’s love interest. He isn’t in the book very much since he was called away for a security emergency. But that is ok because Hayden has plenty to keep her busy until his return. There is also the cat trio of Latifa, Lola, and Chanel, which add a little flavor to the story. Lola is still a kitten and I can imagine her voice in my head anytime she says something.

This has been a fun series to read and there is so much to learn about the characters and the town. I can’t wait to read the next book to learn more. We give this book 5 paws up.

Praise

“This book is an engrossing page turner which will pull you in and keep you cheering for your favorite actors until the very end! Defiance and Redemption is a unique book that tells a story that is both particular to a given time in Ecuador, but also universal in its themes of love, betrayal and survival.” – Nancy Mintie, Founder of Uncommon Good

“Reading Defiance and Redemption reminded me of a distant time when I read Love in the Time of Cholera by Gabriel Garcia Marquez and Like Water for Chocolate by Laura Esquivel. Like these writers, Maria Andrade took me through a captivating journey of love and deep passion. Being gripped by the strong emotions that the characters possess and what they did in the end moved me profoundly.” – Maria Donovan, Retired Verizon Executive

“In Defiance and Redemption, Maria Andrade weaves together history, biography, and fiction into a romantic love and a story of three women that defy the ability of patriarchal culture to define them. We see the young women grow up to rise above the shame that tries to silence and limit them. They learn to find their voices and make sacrifices to be true to themselves as women. They leave behind all that they knew to make a better life for themselves and their daughters. This is a book to remind women of all ages where we came from, and what it took to break out and thrive nearly a century ago. Women like these paved the way for all who came after and have the rights we have today.” – Nancy Poitou, Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist

Chapter 1

WAIT FOR ME

The national swimming champion, Eduardo Velasquez, lay dying in a hospital bed in Ecuador, South America. His stomach was filled with cancer. He had always lived for the present, so he rarely ever thought of his death, least of all at fifty-two. In the hospital room were six of his children. The eldest, Amalia, was standing close by his bedside. She was the product of his relationship with the great passion of his life, Eva, a woman he had loved and lost.

At the foot of the bed, across the room, was Dolores, his wife of twenty years, and her adolescent children. On the other side of his bed, seated by the wall, were two young adult children from his extramarital affairs. He had brought these children to his wife to raise when they were infants.

Many miles away, two more of his illegitimate children would leave their jungle home and arrive in threadbare clothing the following day to attend his funeral at La Immaculada Concepción church. The two would enter the church, misspell their last name on the guest roster and weep in each other’s arms. At the church, they would find well-known sports figures, celebrities from the world of entertainment, politicians, and the news media from various parts of South America. Many of the citizens of Guayaquil would be there to file through the church and pay their respects to their hero and champion.

Few in Eduardo’s family would notice the two offspring until later. When their identities were discovered, many would be shocked and outraged. Many, but not his daughter Amalia. She loved her father with the bittersweet adoration her mother had imbued in her. She loved him with blindness, which forgave him everything, his extramarital affairs, his illegitimate children, even the fact that he had spent little time in her life.

But Dolores, his wife, could not forgive him. She had suffered too many of his infidelities. Through the years, her resentment had turned into bitterness and eventually a weary resignation. Yet, she often comforted herself with the rationalization that she was his wife. The other women had been mere interludes in his life. Her position in society was clearly defined and well regarded.

In her culture, it was common and even expected that men would misbehave and that the consequences might be illegitimate children. That was nothing new. Yet sometimes, as the men aged, they settled down. They would then spend their older years in the company of their patient wives and beloved grandchildren. This had long been Dolores’ hope, a hope that died when Eduardo’s cancer was discovered three months earlier.

Now, she felt the ultimate betrayal. He would abandon her once again, this time, forever. Not only was this fatal reality approaching, but he also was dying without a will, a fact that further complicated her life. She had her attorney fashion a will making her and her children universal heirs, but Eduardo would not sign it. No matter how many times she placed his weak hand on the document, his eyes would look at it, he’d whisper, “no,” and he would drop the pen. Eduardo examined his life with Dolores. He had only loved once, but it was not her whom he loved. Dolores knew when she met him, he would not be faithful. But he vowed never to leave her. She had chosen to live with him and raise their children, even those who were not hers. He was grateful, and he would leave no will so she and the children could all own the land.

His father, Don Miguel Velasquez, had also not left a will when he died, yet Eduardo and his half-brother Bolivar inherited La Perla Negra, the Black Pearl, a large hacienda that stood between two rivers. The two brothers fulfilled their father’s wish. They honored each other and held title to the land equally, though their mothers never accepted this. Until Bolivar died, he and his brother worked side by side, caring for the estate on thousands of acres of rich, dark, volcanic soil. On it was a farm with an abundant market of fruits and vegetables, but the most commercial crop was the large, sweet bananas, sold nationally and internationally. On either side of the property were two rivers flowing in opposite directions, each one producing fresh fish, and on the land were thousands of head of cattle and over a hundred fine horses. Eduardo expected his children to follow in his footsteps to love and work the land together. No one would be disinherited.

Dolores observed her dying husband resentfully and determined her ultimate revenge would be to see that only she and her children got La Perla Negra, not his other bastards. She had accepted the humiliation of his misdeeds with other women for two decades. She had raised other women’s children not with kindness but expecting that she would one day win his love and loyalty. Now he would fail her again by not granting her sole ownership of his estate. She resented his eldest daughter.

Dolores imagined Amalia had crossed a continent only to partake in his inheritance. She looked at Amalia with disdain and refused to address her.

Amalia took little notice. She watched with curiosity as her father periodically lifted his hands before him, intent on studying them front and back. His body was dying, but his hands, tan and strong, were still alive. He reviewed them carefully as if assuring himself for the last time that he yet existed. He studied them as if they were a mirror holding the memory of his sensuous past.

Eduardo’s hands had caressed many women, shaken hands with friends and enemies. They had played and glided through the silky warmth or the chill in the depth of waters. Since he was a boy, he had dived into rivers, lakes, and oceans to become a swimmer his country would not soon forget.

His hands had also worked hard alongside the campesinos, planting, harvesting, branding cattle, corralling, and riding horses, building fences, and performing the countless repetitive tasks that filled his days and nights. He had given the land his fidelity and more. He had given what every young laborer gives, his strength, youth, and time, which is sold for a price but is priceless and unrecoverable. He had given generously year by year to the point of exhaustion in the unforgiving environment of heat, torrential rains, mud, insects, and reptiles.

He had tended his piece of earth, and like his ancestors, he had made a covenant with the land. He had become the thing he loved. He and the land were wed to each other, and only death would separate them.

His eyes swelled with tears realizing he would never see the Black Pearl again. He looked at his hands once more before letting them fall to his sides feeling listless, aware he was leaving his life and all that he loved.

Amalia stood by her father’s side at last, after waiting years to be with him. She wiped the tears gently from his face and kissed him on the cheek. Brief had been their encounter, and soon she would never see him again. She stared at him for long periods with love, sorrow, and concentration, to remember his countenance and take with her the essence of his spirit.

He smiled up at her, and she observed his eyes more closely, deep-set and caramel colored. His life ebbed away, yet his skin was golden, his brow as beautiful as her mother had always described it. He reached for her, and his hands showed the years of toil, but his touch was tender.

“Give me your hand,” he said, and their fingers interlaced. “This will be the bridge we build between us, which nothing will ever destroy.” He looked into her eyes, but he could barely see her.

Softly he whispered his last thoughts, “Eva,” he said lovingly, “I knew you would return. I have waited for you.”

He was calling her mother’s name! Dolores, who had approached his bedside, heard him. She turned away furiously and stormed out of the room with her children following.

“I am here, beloved,” the daughter responded, trying to fulfill the dying man’s last wish. Hearing her words, Eduardo smiled, exhaled, and was gone.

Amalia said the Lord’s Prayer as she placed her hand on his chest, but there was no heartbeat. She imagined his spirit lifting upward out of his body and away into the sky. The sun was setting. She thought of her mother in another continent and wished that Eva was there instead of herself. Then she realized once more that her father had been right. Eva was present through her.

* * *

She had heard the story of her parents’ love for each other all her life. Now more than ever, she wondered how her mother ever had the strength to face disgrace in order to gain the love of this man. Why did she part from him, whom she loved so much? How had a woman with two small children find the courage to leave her country and become a stranger in a strange land? What kind of fierce determination possessed her to become an immigrant who would set out with no resources, no employable skills, and embark on such a risky venture?

It had been over two decades since Eva left with her two daughters. Yet only now, in the country of her birth, did Amalia begin to grasp the pieces of the world that had shaped her mother. It was a world that now barely existed. She wanted to see it, catch it, one day describe it to her children before it disappeared, for, like all the moments we live, it was foam on a receding wave.
