A surprise trip to Barcelona with her boyfriend, Jake, seems like the perfect antidote to Grace Sawyer’s current woes. The city is dazzling and unpredictable, but the biggest surprise for Grace is discovering who arranged and paid for the vacation.

Carrie Ann wasn’t just Grace’s foster sister. Clever, pretty, and mercurial, she was her best friend—until everything went terribly wrong. Now, as she flees an abusive marriage, Carrie Ann has turned to the one person she hopes will come through for her. Despite her initial misgivings, Grace wants to help. But then Carrie Ann and Jake both go missing. Stunned and confused, Grace begins to realize how much of herself she’s kept from Jake—and how much of Carrie Ann she never understood. Soon Grace is baited into following a trail of scant clues across Spain, determined to find the truth, even if she must revisit her troubled past to do it.

Mary Carter’s intriguing novel delves into the complexities of childhood bonds, the corrosive weight of guilt and blame, and all the ways we try—and often fail—to truly know the ones we love.

Excerpt

Carrie Ann. The words felt like two gunshots to the chest. Just hearing that name come out of her mother’s mouth made Grace’s heart start tripping. She almost shot out of her chair. “I’m Grace,” she said. “Gracie Ann.” Her voice cracked. “Dad?” she said.

“She’s confused, honey. The past and the present, it’s just one big, ugly glob.” Pinpricks of shame began forming at the base of Grace’s spine.

“I’m not confused,” Jody said. “Carrie Ann came to visit me.”

“My God,” Grace said. This time she did shoot out of her chair. Carrie Ann was the only girl foster child the Sawyers had ever taken in. At first she had been like a sister to Grace.

“Who is she married to now?” Jody said. “I can’t remember.”

“Pay no attention to her, Gracie,” Jim said.

“Why can’t I remember?” Jody pressed on her temples with her index fingers, as if she could squeeze the memory out of her head.

Grace took a step toward her mother. “When did she come and visit you, Mom?”
“Grace, I told you she didn’t,” Jim said. “Don’t egg your mother on.”

“I’m not egging her on, Dad, but if Carrie Ann was here, I want to know about it.”

Her father whacked his newspaper on the side of his chair. “I told you she wasn’t! And I should know. I’ve been sitting right here!”

“She’s still such a pretty girl,” Jody said. “She asked about you, Grace. She asked me all sorts of questions about you.”

Jim got up and threw up his arms. “She’s out of her mind!” He began to pace.

“Dad,” Grace said. “Hush.” Her mother suddenly became very still, which meant she was listening. Grace took her father by his arm and led him back to his chair.

“I’m sorry. She won’t remember me saying it.”

“That’s not the point.”

“I can’t help it. Carrie Ann this – Carrie Ann that. I thought we’d put that nuisance behind us for once and for all. Is this what it comes to? Reliving your worst nightmare?”

“I’ve never heard you speak so harshly about Carrie Ann,” Grace said. Her mom was the one who used to say the worst things about Carrie Ann. She said Carrie Ann was evil. She said Carrie Ann was a curse that would follow all of them to their graves. Once she even said there wasn’t enough Lysol in the world to get rid of that stain. And each insult cut into Grace like her mother was saying it about her. Her sister. Of sorts. Her own Dickens-like drama.  Carrie Ann was the best thing that had ever happened to Grace, and she was the worst. She’d been out of their lives for nearly fifteen years. And Grace had spent every one of them trying, and failing, to put the past behind her. She turned to her father.

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

“Tell you what?”

“That Mom’s been talking about her.”

“Because I don’t want to dredge up all that nonsense. It’s her damn medication. I keep telling the doctor it’s making her worse, and he won’t listen to me.” Her father slammed his fist on the arm of the chair. “These people think just because we’re old that we’re stupid. She wouldn’t be so forgetful if she cut down on some of those pills. How do I know that? Because she’s my wife.  Because I’ve been married to this woman for forty-four years. You know what he said to me?”

“Who?”

“That snot-nosed doctor, that’s who!”

“What did he say?”

“Put me in my place. In front of my wife. ‘You’re a psychotherapist, correct? Not a psychiatrist? You don’t prescribe medication?’ That’s what the snot-nosed so-called doctor actually said to me. Can you believe that? Some twenty-year-old who just started wiping his own ass. I’m telling you she’s on too many pills! Makes her soupy. He won’t listen to me!”

“It’s okay, Dad. Calm down. It’s okay.”

“I can’t bear hearing her talk about Carrie Ann.  Your mother’s the one who told us never to mention Carrie Anne’s name again.”

Forbid us. Forbid us to ever mention her name again. “I know, Dad. I’ll talk to the doctor. Calm down.”

“I always wanted to go to Spain,” Jody said. She turned off the television and patted the side of the bed. So she’d heard and understood the conversation. God, the brain was a mysterious thing.

Grace went over and sat down. “You never told me that.”

“I would hardly share that with a stranger.”

I’m your daughter! She wanted to shout. But her mother couldn’t help it.

“Just keep talking,” her father said. “At least she’s not dredging up ghosts, or drooling over naked stud muffins.”

And now  Grace couldn’t believe her father had just said “naked stud muffins.” Maybe getting away for a bit wasn’t such a bad idea. Grace turned back to her mother. “Why did you always want to go to Spain?”

“My mother went to Spain. All by herself. When she was in her seventies.”

“I know,” Grace said. It had been just after Grace’s grandfather had died. Her grandparents were supposed to take the trip together. Everyone thought Annette Jennings would cancel the trip. Instead, she buried her husband and packed her bags. Little Annette who had never been outside of her home state. Grace had had many conversations with her grandmother about that trip. She was proud of her too.

“It was really something,” Jim said. “Because in those days seventy wasn’t the new fifty or whatever the kids say today. Seventy was seventy.”

“Tell me about it,” Grace said.

Jody Sawyer straightened up, and her eyes seemed to take in more light. “Well, it’s not like it is now. Women didn’t travel alone back then. Wasn’t that brave? My mother sent me a postcard from Madrid of a beautiful tango dancer in a red dress. The dress was made of actual material—beautiful red silk right on the postcard. I’ll never forget it. She’d only written one sentence on the back. ‘Robert would’ve loved the landing.’ My father was very picking with landings and always impressed when the pilot pulled off a smooth one. Anyway. As soon as I got that postcard I knew my mother was going to be all right. ‘Robert would have loved the landing.’ After she died I spent hours just touching that silky red dress with the tips of my fingers and imagining my mother dancing in the streets of Spain.”

Jody Sawyer looked up and swayed her upper body slightly as if watching her faraway self dance. Then she looked down at her hands, twisting the bed sheet. “Look how ugly and wrinkled I am now.”

“You’re not ugly and wrinkled, Mom. You’re beautiful.”

“I wish I had that postcard now.” Her mother looked up into space. “I lost it.”

Grace hesitated. Did she, or didn’t she?  Grace opened the bedside drawer and took out the postcard. Her mother was right. The dress was silky. Grace handed it to her mother and watched her eyes light up. Next her mother gently outlined the edge of the dancer’s dress with the trembling tip of her right index finger. Her fingernail was misshapen, the peach paint flaking. Grace would have to see if they could bring in a manicurist.

Jody looked at Grace, her eyes clear and bright. “Gracie Ann you have to go. Film everything. I’m dying to see Barcelona through you.” Grace must have looked stricken, for her mother laughed and then put her hand over her heart. “Sorry, no pun intended.” Like antennas being manipulated for a clearer signal, sometimes her mother tuned in perfectly. Jody Sawyer laughed again, and Grace couldn’t help but laugh with her.

“Mom.”

“Make me feel like I’m there,” Jody said, closing her eyes. “Help me shut out this hospice. Let me see beautiful Barcelona.” She took Grace’s hand and held it. “Do it for me. I’ll feel like I’m with you. Bring a camera. And your guitar,” she added. “You never know.” When Grace still didn’t answer, her mother opened her eyes, and lifted Grace’s chin up with her hand like she used to do when Grace was a child. “Be brave, Gracie Ann. Just like my mother.”

“Like my mother too,” Grace whispered back.

Review

I have mixed emotions on the book. At the beginning I was wondering where the book was going, it felt like it was all over the place. Then about page 175 (maybe a bit before) the book really pulled me in and I did not want to put the book down….but I was falling asleep no matter how much I was fighting staying awake to keep reading!

To me, Grace was a weaker character, at least in the beginning of the book until about page 175. She was in a relationship with Jake for 3 years but there was so much he didn’t know about her past. Perhaps she was trying to avoid the memories?

Carrie Ann was definitely a bit psycho. She may have had good intentions for her actions but the way she went about it was so wrong.

I did guess a few things, or rather was suspicious, of a character or two. I knew something wasn’t right but didn’t know what until near the end of the book.

I didn’t remember what sort of book this was when I signed up for the blog tour, but it is definitely something of a psychological thriller even though it is not classified that way.

I give it 3 1/2 paws

Today author Mary Carter joins us with her thoughts on how she came to write the story.  It is definitely a very intriguing story (review will be in another post!) and one to check out.  A psychological thriller to me even though it is classified as general fiction!

Meet Me in Barcelona 2

It’s hard to believe it’s been over a decade since my trip to Spain. I was living in New York City, my first novel had just been published, and a friend from Seattle decided to celebrate her thirtieth birthday in Barcelona. I was thrilled to be invited. At the time, my novel, She’ll Take It, had been optioned by Paramount Pictures for a possible television series. The week I was in Spain, they were pitching it to Showtime. I remember sitting at an outdoor café in La Rambla, surrounded by street performers, tango music, and friends. I had a fat glass of red wine, and tapas on the way. The city was electric. My future was uncertain, but full of possibilities.

Ten girls went on that trip, but only nine came back. Just kidding. We all made it out alive. But I was a little beaten up. I can’t even remember how many of us shared a flat in La Rambla, I want to say there were at least eight girls. And most of the time, I felt like the odd girl out. My birthday-girl friend kind of turned into a mean girl. I hadn’t met her other friends, and one in particular had a personality that I simply clashed with. She was very loud, (very American?) and seemed to not only realize that she made me uncomfortable, but capitalized on it, wanting to force me into admitting that she was making me uncomfortable. Things just got worse when my birthday-girl friend said: “I knew you and Christine would either love each other or hate each other. You’re so much alike.” (Names have been changed). I was truly horrified. To this day I know I was nothing like Christine. At yet another gathering, my friend was going around the table and saying why she picked all of us to join her on this birthday celebration. When she got to me she said: “I picked Mary because she’s a loudmouth.” Again, I was horrified. And completely perplexed. I’m not a loudmouth. On yet another occasion, I was having a good time, getting tipsy, and talking with the owner of a café, who loved being surrounded by young, American women. I was trying out my Spanish with him, and he was encouraging it. Christine suddenly called me out—“Quit trying to speak Spanish when you don’t really know it.” Again, in front of everyone. I can have a quick temper, but I was too flabbergasted to even respond. The world of women I was with was suddenly as foreign to me as the country, and here I was a grown woman, dealing with not just one, but two “mean girls”. WTF?

Our vacationing styles differed greatly. It was difficult to get out of the house with eight women trying to get ready. And when we did finally get out, the birthday-girl wanted a picture every single second. And I mean, every single second we had to stop and pose for a picture. It’s a delicate balance, because who doesn’t want beautiful pictures of Spain, but I felt as if I never got to just be and enjoy that trip due to the abundance of pictures. I knew that I had to write about Spain, and complex female relationships one day, and in MEET ME IN BARCELONA I’ve done just that. I didn’t write about me, or the birthday girl, or “Christine”. Instead I created Grace and Carrie Ann. Foster sisters. One vulnerable, the other mercurial and manipulative. They share secrets. Too many. Too deep. And when Carrie Ann disappears along with Grace’s boyfriend, Jake, Grace can’t help but think Carrie Ann is up to her old tricks. I had a love/hate experience in Barcelona, just like Grace has a love/hate relationship with Carrie Ann. In the end, I think both Grace and I come out of it with a deeper understanding of ourselves. And, no, She’ll Take It, did not get picked up by Showtime—but I haven’t given up. Maybe MEET ME IN BARCELONA will one day hit the big screen. If not, for better or worse, I’ll always have Barcelona.

Synopsis

Victoria Rienzi came home to the Jersey Shore to write a new book, learn the family restaurant business, and practice the fine art of Italian cooking. But when delicious dishes are paired with murder, Vic has a little too much on her plate…

When Vic asked her nonna for more responsibility in the kitchen, she didn’t mean making a thousand tiny meatballs by hand for the family’s famous wedding soup. The dish is to be served at the reception for a close family friend at the exclusive Belmont Country Club. And once there Vic has to deal with a demanding bridezilla and clashes in the kitchen—between the staff and servers, between two egocentric head chefs, and between the country club president and…well…everyone.

The wedding comes off without a hitch—until the body of the club’s president is found on the beach below a high seawall. Now Vic will need to use her noodle to find out who pushed whom too far…before she’s the one who lands in the soup!

Review

What a great followup to the first book, Murder in Marinara. Like the first book I didn’t figure it out but it made sense once the whole reason was explained. I do think that while this person was minimally on my radar, I never really would have expected it to turn out how it did. I thought it was interesting to follow along with how Vic’s mind worked as a writer and trying to figure out who and why.

I do wonder if Vic and Tim are destined to get back together or if there will just be this tension between them.  And what about Cal?  Seems like there should be more to his story.

Oh and interesting news for SIL Sophia…I guessed it way in the beginning and was a little surprised that it took Vic a while to figure it out.

We give this 4 paws up and can’t wait for book 3!

Today we are featuring author Rose Genova on StoreyBook Reviews.  She is the author of the Italian Kitchen Mystery Series (I am salivating just thinking about good Italian food!).  So glad you can stop by Rosie and I look forward to reading more of your books in the future.

Quirky. Colorful. Memorable. All these adjectives have been applied to the characters that inhabit the world of my cozy series, the Italian Kitchen Mysteries. I often wonder, though, if those words are simply euphemisms for a much less flattering modifier: “crazy.”

An interviewer once asked me where I got the material for the “quirky” Rienzi family at the center of each of the books. As I responded to her: “One girl’s quirky is another girl’s normal.” But I wouldn’t be completely honest if I said that the Italian family in my stories wasn’t inspired, at least a little, by my own.

My main character, Victoria, is the only daughter of Frank and Nicolina Rienzi, who together with Frank’s mom, Guilietta, run the Casa Lido restaurant in the fictional Oceanside Park, New Jersey. Vic has an older brother, Danny, who is a detective on the local police force. She’s close to her sister-in-law Sofia, who serves as the Watson to her Sherlock. Sofia is fiercely loyal to Victoria, but tells her the hard truths when she needs to hear them. She’s smart and funny, and as a character she is certainly inspired by my own sister and sister-in-law. And while my brother isn’t a cop, he shares certain of Danny’s traits, such as impatience with his sister’s flights of fancy!

But it is Nonna who is in many ways a composite of my own two grandmothers, both named Mary. They were tough ladies, great cooks, and formidable matriarchs. They both lost their husbands at relatively young ages, but carried on with strength and grace. And like the grandmother in my books, they commanded a great deal of respect from their family members. Even if they did insist you didn’t visit them enough.

And while I like to think of my protagonist, Victoria, as an everywoman, she does share certain idiosyncrasies with her creator (loves Springsteen and Sinatra, afraid of boardwalk rides, drinks anisette). But my mother does not wear hair extensions, and I do not have a poker playing, horse betting, homemade wine making Dad who dresses like a member of the Rat Pack. (Well, he used to make wine, and it packed a kick, let me tell you.)

So unlike the Rienzi clan, perhaps not every family has a secret ritual to remove the Evil Eye. Or makes homemade chianti in the basement. Or has an unnatural propensity for stumbling over corpses. But we all have at least one character in our families. The ones who are quirky. And colorful. And yes, maybe just a little bit crazy.

But isn’t that why we love them?

Review

This is what happens why a mystery writer goes home to learn how to cook the family way and runs across a murder…they solve it of course. Of all the cozies I have ever read, I don’t think I have read one where the main character was a mystery writer. And then you throw in some good ol’ Italian food (with recipes at the end), well it is a good combo.

There was a good cast of characters and I have to admit I probably missed most of the clues. I truly did not expect the murder to be who it was…definitely a surprise for me.

We give this book 4 paws!

This month we read Bristol House by author Beverly Swerling.  Despite the fact that there were no discussion questions available we managed to have a good conversation about the book.  I believe everyone really enjoyed the book and while we might have had bits and pieces that we didn’t like, it didn’t stop us from finishing the book.

Synopsis

In the tradition of Kate Mosse, a swiftly-paced mystery that stretches from modern London to Tudor England

In modern-day London, architectural historian and recovering alcoholic Annie Kendall hopes to turn her life around and restart her career by locating several long-missing pieces of ancient Judaica. Geoff Harris, an investigative reporter, is soon drawn into her quest, both by romantic interest and suspicions about the head of the Shalom Foundation, the organization sponsoring her work. He’s also a dead ringer for the ghost of a monk Annie believes she has seen at the flat she is subletting in Bristol House.

In 1535, Tudor London is a very different city, one in which monks are being executed by Henry VIII and Jews are banished. In this treacherous environment of religious persecution, Dom Justin, a Carthusian monk, and a goldsmith known as the Jew of Holborn must navigate a shadowy world of intrigue involving Thomas Cromwell, Jewish treasure, and sexual secrets. Their struggles shed light on the mysteries Annie and Geoff aim to puzzle out—at their own peril.

This riveting dual-period narrative seamlessly blends a haunting supernatural thriller with vivid historical fiction. Beverly Swerling, widely acclaimed for her City of Dreams series, delivers a bewitching and epic story of a historian and a monk, half a millennium apart, whose destinies are on a collision course.

Review

I thought this was an interesting book from a historical and a conspiracy theory type angle. And talk about mixing the past with the present and several types of religion! Some things were not as expected and of course some were. It was a good mix of mystery, romance, history and religious education.  I think the mysticism wasn’t expected but added to the depth of the book.

I gave it 4 paws up!

None of them looked remotely like a Pinkerton man.  A Pinkerton agent would no doubt be wearing a proper suit.  But the only male who looked the least bit citified was Ike Bruhn, home from his honeymoon with his new bride.
Sandy jiggled at his side.  “Ya see ’im?”
“Nope,” Jerico grunted.
“Maybe he missed the train,” his deputy suggested.
“Naw, must be here somewhere.  Look for a gent in a gray suit.”  Pinkerton men always wore grey to blend in with crowds.  He scanned the thronged station platform again.
“Check inside, Sandy.  Maybe he slipped past me.”
His deputy jogged off and Jericho perused the crowd a third time.  Nothing.  Maybe Mr. Detective had chickened out at the prospect of fingering an elusive outlaw gang that was robbing trains.  He narrowed his eyes and turned to check the station once more when someone stumbled smack into him.
“Oh, I am terribly sorry.”  An extremely pretty young woman carrying a green-striped parasol gazed up at him.
Her voice sounded like rich whiskey sliding over smooth river stones and for a moment Jericho forgot what he’d come for.
She only came up to his shoulder and on her dark, piled-up hair sat the most ridiculous concoction of feathers and stuffed birds he’d ever laid eyes on.
He sucked in a breath to apologize, then wished he hadn’t.  Goddam she smelled good.  Soap and something flowery.Made his head swim.
He stepped back.  “’Scuse me, ma’am.”
She waved a gloved hand and peered at his chest.  “Oh, you are the sheriff.”
“Yeah, I am.”
She smiled and his mouth went dry.  “You are just the man I want to see.”
Jericho swallowed.  “You have a problem?”
“Oh, no.”
She twirled her parasol.  You have the problem.  I have come to help.”  She waited, an expectant look on her face.
“Help?” Jerico echoed.
“Of course.”  The whiskey in her voice was now sliding over some pointy rocks.  “I am Madison O’Donnell.  The Smoke River Bank hired me to help catch the gang robbing their gold shipments.”
Jericho stared at her.
“I believe you were expecting me?”
He snapped his jaw shut.  He sure as hell wasn’t expecting her. The last thing he’d expected was this frilly-looking female with her ridiculous hat.  In her green-striped
dress and twirling her parasol like that she made him think of a dish of cool mint ice cream.
“Whatever is the matter, Sheriff?  You have gone quite pale?  Are you ill?”
He jerked at the question.  Not ill, just gutshot.  “Uh, yeah. I mean No, I’m not ill.  Just . . . surprised.”
She lowered her voice.  “Most Pinkerton clients are surprised when they meet me.  It will pass.”
Hell no, it won’t.
Madison O’Donnell picked up her travel bag.  “Shall we go?”
Not on your life.  “Uh, my deputy’s inside the station house.  ’Scuse me, ma’am.”  He strode past her without looking back.  Inside, he found Sandy talking to the ticket
seller.
“Charlie says nobody’s come in except the two Weatherby women.  You want me to hang around and – ?”
