I am so excited to share UFO day from Meggan’s book.  Sure UFO day is in July, but how fun is this for your little space adventurers?!  If you visit her blog, Instagram or Pinterest page you will find more crafts and ideas.  Or scroll down and purchase her e-Book.

UFO Day – $5

Keep your eyes to the skies on July 2nd because it’s World UFO Day.  Believers and skeptics alike will have fun with these out-of-this-world fun balloon and food craft projects.

Glowing Alien Balloons – $2

Supplies:

  • White Balloons from the dollar store – $1
  • Green Glow Sticks (bracelet size) from the dollar store – $1
  • Black Permanent Marker from starter kit – $0

Directions:

  1. Break glow sticks to activate.
  2. Begin to blow up balloons to medium size.
  3. Insert a glow stick in each as quickly as possible to avoid much air loss.
  4. Continue to blow up the balloon to its fullest capacity and tie off.
  5. Draw large alien-like eyes onto your balloons with the black permanent marker.

Cookie UFOs – $3

UFO - Cookie

Supplies:

  • Large Cookies (whatever your taste preference) from the dollar store – $1
  • Gumdrops from the dollar store – $1
  • White Icing from the dollar store – $1

Directions:

  1. Use the icing as your “glue” to attach the gumdrops to the cookies. You don’t need to use a kitchen baggie as a makeshift piping bag.  Just using a kitchen butter knife, spread a little icing to the flat side of each gumdrop and use to affix to the underside of the cookies.  Allow a few minutes to dry & set.  This will create the legs to your UFO so it can stand on your plate.
  2. Using icing and more gumdrops, affix one or more gumdrops (use your imagination) to the top of the edible UFO.

Note:  If you have any leftover glow sticks, create your own ceiling fan flying saucer.  Break glow sticks to activate and using the masking tape from the starter kit, (while the fan is turned off) overlap the glow stick ends with the top side of the fan blades and secure into place with masking tape.  Turn off the lights and turn the fan on high.  Sit on watch your glowing flying saucer spin above your head.

PRAISE FOR SUMMER VACATION

“I read Summer Vacation by Belinda Everette.  I thought it was educational regarding the true history of Juneteenth and portrayed realistic events in the lives of the characters.  I did pass it on to one of my daughters with a special interest in children’s books.  This seems to be a good moment for this kind of story, with increased interest in African-American history with readers of all ages.”   — Ronne Hartfield, Co-Chair, Harvard University Arts Education Council, Executive Director, Art Institute of Chicago, Author

Summer Vacation is very good.  This book is entertaining and informative.  The author has given us a unique way of presenting history to our children.  This book should be published in Spanish and other languages to share this history with other cultures.”  — Irma P. Hall, Academy Award nominated American Actress,  Poet, Author, Language Educator (ret), Dallas Public School System,  30 years.

guest post

Wanting to hone my craft and give more substance to my writing, I enrolled in a “Beginning Short Stories” class at Rice University, the fall of 2014.   Sitting in class, I was feeling a bit intimidated, largely because the majority of my classmates had experience with the instructor, having taken a class he offered the previous semester.  Discussions and lecture points invariably had references to concepts and ideas made in some prior class, and I consistently felt like I had just walked up to a group in the middle of a conversation.  I felt like I was constantly trying to catch-up to the rest of the class, or worse, I felt like perhaps it was something I should have known and I was too embarrassed to ask for clarity or more information and went off to research on my own.

Suffice it to say, for my first assignments in the class, I felt compelled to write about subjects that I was familiar with or had a great deal of experience. The objective was to be viewed as a subject matter expert on or an SME. (An acronym from my Corporate America days. The use of acronyms in that environment was so prevalent, we used to joke that we were bilingual.)

I chose to write about the African-American holiday, Juneteenth, from the historical beginnings through the current day observance and traditions.   It felt like a safe topic for me, and the critique, I hoped, would not be too harsh; after all, I was the only minority in the class and how much would anyone else know? I anticipated providing an educational yet entertaining essay for my classmates by sharing the thoroughly researched facts of this Texas holiday and the celebrations that acknowledged its significance.  Juneteenth is the celebration of the end of slavery and it never occurred to me that anyone other than African Americans celebrated or were aware of the Juneteenth holiday.

After the critique and discussion of the story was over, after I took notes and incorporated the commentary from my classmates, and after I collected the twenty-one edited copies of my story, I listened to a fascinating story of a Juneteenth celebration steeped in history, tradition and rites of passage, that happened annually right here in Houston.

Our instructor would, on occasion, pepper his lectures with stories from his youth, tales of growing up as an only child, and of course, a bit of family drama here and there.  It helped us with data retention and kept mundane subject matter interesting.

Throughout his childhood, his family belonged to a country club.  He recalled many summer afternoons at the club, but one event, prominent in his memory, was the annual carnival held at the club every June.    The carnival, he explained, was a very big event, complete with Ferris wheel, assorted rides, popcorn, cotton candy and everything one would expect to see and experience at a festive carnival.   It became, he explained, a family tradition, to go to the club in June for the carnival.

He told us his earliest memory of the annual carnival at the club, was around the age of six. After a few years he began to wonder about the reason for the big party, the big carnival.   Finally, at the age of eleven, he asked one of his parent’s friends, in passing as he enjoyed the carnival one Saturday afternoon.   He remembered walking toward the Ferris wheel, when he saw his dad’s friend and recalled tugging at the hem of his shirt tail to get his attention.

“Mr. Bob,” the little boy asked, looking up at the older gentleman. “Why do we have this party every year?  Why do we have all these rides and this carnival?”

His father’s friend looked down at him with a big smile, and answered, “It’s Juneteenth son!  We’re celebrating Juneteenth!”

Our instructor paused for moment, as he told his story.  He looked down at the floor for a moment and the classroom was very quiet.   You could almost see the inner turmoil his mind was processing.   The muscles in his jaw area twitched slightly, as if he was trying to reconcile what he saw with what he knew about the holiday.

The moment passed and he looked around the classroom before he started to speak again.  He explained that by that age, he knew what the meaning of the Juneteenth holiday was.  He learned about the holiday and its meaning in school.

The instructor went on to tell us that after his father’s friend answered his question and walked away, he stood there and looked around at all of the activity at the carnival. He saw that the only people enjoying the carnival were white, and black people were working, serving drinks, operating the rides, passing out food, or picking up trash.

I thought about the irony in that story for a very long time.  Long after I completed the assignment, long after I finished Rice, long after I celebrated the next Juneteenth holiday.   I thought about telling that story.  I considered how I would explain that story to a child, how I would explain the dynamics of the carnival, the people working, the people celebrating the holiday.

By the end of 2015, I wrote the first three books in my children’s series, The Adventures of Mackenzie and Cristen, and the first book, Summer Vacation, was inspired by that story.

Review

I learned about this book at BEA and picked up this copy of the series because I thought it would be great for a young child should they move around a lot, how to make friends and to never give up. I like the underlying message about pollution and what we are doing to our eco-system by throwing things into the water and how it ruins things for the life within the waters.

The illustrations are beautiful and reflect the story and the message being sent.

We give it 5 paws up

Excerpt

Delbert grabbed his phone and sneaked downstairs. He slipped his feet into his sneakers and silently opened the front door – and that’s when everything started to spin out of control. This was a moment he would later describe as ‘being in the wrong place at the wrong time’.

Delbert jumped in surprise as he saw Sam’s girlfriend standing behind the door.

“Oh, hi Manisha!” he said.

“Close the door!” hissed Manisha.

Delbert was taken aback by her tone. He closed the door behind him and looked at the girl.

Manisha was fifteen. She had long black hair and a pair of big brown eyes. She and Sam had been going out for ages, almost three weeks.

“I need your help,” whispered Manisha.

“But aren’t you going in to see Sam?” asked Delbert.

“No,” she said, glancing around her as if she were afraid someone was spying on her. “I need your help.”

With that she grabbed Delbert by his hand and started dragging him down the street. At that moment Delbert’s next-door neighbour, Evie, appeared from nowhere.

“Awwww!” she cooed, a menacing grin spreading across her face.

Evie was in Delbert’s class. She was a girl who had committed her life to being in love with him!

Eurgh!

“Dee’s found a girlfriend, Dee’s found a girlfriend!” she sang as Delbert and Manisha rushed past her, hand in hand. Evie looked cheerful on the outside, but on the inside she was insanely jealous.

Delbert didn’t hear Evie’s jeers. He could hardly hear his own thoughts. For the first time in months he’d left his room and THIS happens – getting kidnapped by his big brother’s crazy girlfriend!

While at BEA I was very excited to find a publisher, Waldorf Publishing, that was very close to where I live in Texas.  Very small world if you ask me.  But was very glad I stopped by their booth because I love their logo – it’s a dog, and you know I love dogs!  Well I hope you know I love dogs since I give my book ratings in paws!

Review

There is a line of children’s books about Mr. Waldorf and he visits various places and always manages to lose his spectacles.  I think he needs to tie those to him so they don’t continually get lost! Each of the books tells you some facts about the country or state and the illustrations really make the the book more enjoyable.  I think it helps the kids learn more about the location Mr. Waldorf is visiting.  In the Alaska book, Waldorf’s spectacles can be found through out and it is a great interactive moment with the children to see if they can find them.  This was not available in the other books and that did disappoint me a little bit since I think it involves the children in the story. We enjoyed all of the books and give them 5 paws up.  Here are the 4 books due out this fall.

good-night-chicago

Synopsis

Good Night Chicago makes it a joy for adults to share their passion for this great American city with the children they love, and who will undoubtedly come to cherish Chicago too. This board book delights in the many kid-friendly institutions and places that help make Chicago one of the world’s great cities. In keeping with the Good Night Our World series, readers pass through both a day and a year while rhythmically saluting special aspects of the place. “Good morning, Lake Michigan and Lighthouse.” “Good evening, blues and jazz musicians.” “Good night, planetarium.” “Good night, Chicagoans.”

Review

I picked up this board book at BEA thanks to Good Night Books.  Since we were in Chicago it seemed appropriate to get this one tied to that city.  For someone that is traveling to Chicago (or any city if you pick up one of the other books) it is a great introduction into some of the things that you might see and do on that trip with a young one.  The illustrations are colorful and engaging and help share what the child will see when in this city.

I like for the sports teams where it is generic wording but the illustration depicts all of the major sports teams in Chicago.

The book takes the reader from morning until night and wishes each spot either good morning, good afternoon, good evening or good night.

There is a whole series of these books for states, major cities and even some that are tied to Mom, Dad, Baby Brother or Sister and even toys and such.  They even have the books written in other languages and have international themes.

We give this 5 paws up!

About Good Night Books

The Good Night Books Series of board books has been designed and developed since 2005 to celebrate special places and themes in a way that young children, ages 0-5, can easily relate to and enjoy with their families. All the books are written and illustrated with a simplicity that captures the “essence” of each subject and place.

Every book is printed in bright colors on high-quality board to endure the attention of young children. All have six-inch by six-inch pages, making for large 12 x 6 open page spreads.

Each title takes its readers through the passage of a day (“good morning,” “good afternoon,” “good evening,” and “good night”). And most titles, if set in a place with seasonality, also include the seasons of the year (spring, summer, autumn, and winter). Children are further introduced to the practice of using polite salutations and greetings, all while being lulled to a good night’s sleep.

The series is, in part, inspired by Walt Whitman’s poems, such as the classic book Leaves of Grass and the famous poem “Song of Myself,” in which the poet catalogs item after item, in a process whereby the mere naming of each item draws attention to it and thus imbues it with a sense of import. The Good Night Our World Series tries to recognize and celebrate the world in a Whitmanesque spirit.

I’m sure you are thinking…why so many children’s books?  Well they are all for my great-niece AND I can catch up on my Goodreads challenge since I had fallen off the wagon with my reading and was behind!  Children’s books are a great way to catch up.

Review

I picked up this ARC at BEA and it is a cute story about a kitten looking for the moon one night because the moon is nowhere to be seen. So the kitten goes on an adventure to find the moon and that he does.

Cute story, great for kids and I think it would be a good bedtime story because it is very repetitive and calming.  Just what you need to get a kid to sleep!

We give it 4 paws up.

I loved going to BEA and picking up all these books for my great-niece.  She may be a bit young for some of them, but I know her parents will read the books to her and eventually she will be able to read them herself.  The author, Marianne Richmond, wrote and illustrated this book.  She is not new to the children’s publishing world and has many other books out there that are available now.

This book is due out in January 2017 (may be October 2016 but not 100% sure).  It is available on Amazon for pre-order.

Bedtime Blessings offers a peaceful way to end the day with a special child through this heartfelt prayer of gratitude and wish for God’s blessings on others, too.

Create to help grow a joyful spirit of contentment in even the youngest child, this sweet blessing will guide them into dreamland with a heart full of thanks and love.

Review

I was able to meet the author at BEA and pick up a copy of this book.

This is a great book to read to young children to teach them the meaning of being thankful for all that they have and those around them.  It also is a way for parents to institute nightly prayers with their children, something that seems to have disappeared in many homes.

The graphics are simple but the words can have a powerful impact on impressionable children which is what we would want to create a kinder society for the future.

Review

This is a board book and so not very long, but let’s the child know that even though everyone is busy through the day, mom isn’t too busy to cuddle with her child. It sends a good message to children that lets them know that they are loved.

5 paws up for this book!

Today I am featuring another book I received at Book Expo America, Also an Octopus written by Maggie Tokuda-Hall and illustrated by Benji Davies.  Like the book I highlighted on Sunday, this book is not due out until October, but you can also pre-order it on Amazon.

Synopsis

Even the most totally awesome story starts with a little bit of nothing. What happens next is up to you! A delightfully meta picture book that will set imaginations soaring.

It begins with an octopus who plays the ukulele. Since this is a story, the octopus has to want something—maybe to travel to faraway galaxies in a totally awesome purple spaceship. Then the octopus sets out to build a spaceship out of soda cans, glue, umbrellas, glitter, and waffles. OK, maybe the octopus needs some help, like from an adorable bunny friend, and maybe that bunny turns out to be . . . a rocket scientist? (Probably not.) But could something even more amazing come to pass? Debut author Maggie Tokuda-Hall, with the help of illustrator Benji Davies, sets up an endearingly funny story, then hands the baton to readers, who will be more than primed to take it away.

Review

I picked up this book for my great-niece to build up her library, but I was not expecting a great story about how anyone can write a story and that no idea is too silly.  In fact, this book would actually help an aspiring young author by showing the steps they need to go through to actually write the story.

I do love how the book starts:  “Every story starts the same way…with nothing.”  It s true, every story that any author has written started with nothing to very little other than a dream to write that story.

We give this 5 paws up!
