I attended the Book Expo America this past week in Chicago.  I picked up a lot of children’s books for my great-niece to help build her library.  I thought before sending them along to her I would review the books here.

The first book is called Fuchsia Fierce and is written by author Christianne Jones and illustrated by Kelly Canby.  This book is due out in September, but never fear because you can pre-order it on Amazon now!

Review

This is a great story to teach children that it is ok to be afraid to try new things but if they will summon up the courage then they will find that new experiences are not so scary. I love the main character, Fuchsia Fierce, she is what I imagine many children feel like when faced with something out of their comfort zone.

This book is for kids ages 4-8, but the message is for a child of any age!

We give this book 5 paws up.

Chickadees Book Cover

Synopsis

Chickadees, Bumbelbeez, Pussy-Willow Trees and Two-And-A-Half, by Jeffrey Politsky, is a vibrantly illustrated adventure book meant to inspire children to follow their urges to explore and to appreciate diversity. It is recommended for ages 4-9.

“Kids who still have their parents read to them really like the book, as do kids who are independent readers,” says Dr. Politsky. “The reviews of parents and children who have read the book are very favorable: adults really like the message and the children just love the story. I hope many more children will get to read it.”

The book starts off when “One day a little brown monkey with dazzling olive green eyes, a friendly smile, and a long curly tail asked his father if there was more to the life than just hanging around with other monkeys and eating bananas.” Before long he meets a lovely grey cat and a majestic blue pelican each on their own quests. Together, they explore a foreign island and when their journey takes them into a private swath of land, they befriend a local dog who takes them further than they ever imagined.

Chickadees, Bumbelbeez, Pussy-Willow Trees and Two-And-A-Half emphasizes several significant values, which help us subsist and ultimately thrive: learning through independent exploration, the need for friendship, the importance of respect and tolerance for other cultures, languages, and lifestyle diversity, along with a healthy understanding of the powers of mother nature.

Review

This may be a children’s book but what a tale it weaves with some good life lessons disguised within the pages about diversity and acceptance.

This is the tale of 3 animals that take a journey to an island off of Maui to see another part of the world than where they live. Along they way they meet up and experience the island together and come in contact with other animals and learn something from each of them and each experience.

This would be a great book to read with your children because it is longer (but at most a paragraph per page) and discuss the adventures of the animals.

The illustrations are beautiful and depict the stories well and we give it 5 paws up.

About the Author

Dr. Jeffrey Politsky grew up in Toronto, Canada. He obtained undergraduate and graduate degrees at the University of Toronto and his medical degree at the University of Western Ontario before moving to Vancouver for his residency training in Neurology. He moved to Boston in the late 1990’s to complete his epilepsy fellowship at Massachusetts General Hospital and has lived in the United States ever since. Today, Dr. and Mrs. Politsky live in New Jersey with their two children and two giant schnauzers. While he has written numerous articles and chapters related to the neurologic sciences, Chickadees, Bumbelbeez, Pussy-Willow Trees and Two-And-A-Half is Dr. Politsky’s first serious non-academic venture.

Dr. Politsky began writing Chickadees, Bumbelbeez, Pussy-Willow Trees and Two-And-A-Half on Formantera, one of the Balearic Islands in the western Mediterranean Sea off of the east coast of Spain.

“As I began pondering what makes free-form travel so interesting, I decided to try and create a story that would be appealing to youngsters. All of my back-packing adventures, like so many other travelers, had common themes: selecting a location, landing in a foreign place and feeling very foreign, attempting to understand the culture and fit in, survival, discovery, problem solving, raw happiness. I incorporated several of my own experiences in the text,” says Dr. Politsky. “I decided to weave into the story the linguistic nuances that my grandfather used when he would joke with my brother and me when we were youngsters – in essence we would ask him a question and he would answer using neologisms and in a manner that made absolutely no sense at all and then start laughing in a jolly fashion, quite amused with himself. I cherish my memory of my grandfather. His good nature and terminology stuck, much of it is incorporated in the book. In fact, some of his favorite expressions make up the book’s title.”

Dr. Politsky’s grandfather died in 1989 of complications related to multi-infarct dementia.

Tony Santiago illustrated the book with Dr. Politsky’s children and grandfather individually represented in the characters.

In 2011, Dr. Politsky’s wife was diagnosed with breast cancer. She is fine now; but the process was quite an ordeal. Anyone who has been through this or a similar experience understands this. Dr. Politsky sees and treats patients every day with epilepsy and related neurologic & medical conditions – in many cases illnesses appear like an unexpected storm and can turn people’s lives upside down and inside out like a tornado. By the end of 2012, Kim had been diagnosed, treated, and had achieved full physical recovery.

Today I’m reviewing a book that was written by my husband’s cousin, Adam York.  Adam is a great guy and this line of children’s books encourages readers to think about stewardship and giving back to society and their community.

So with no further ado, Meet Penny Nickels!

meet penny nickels

Synopsis

The Adventures of Penny Nickels takes children on a unique journey in learning what it means to live life as a steward—someone who takes special care of the things in life that God has entrusted to us. Through a series of personal encounters, Penny Nickels, a copper-haired girl, and her pet chihuahua, Dinero, will help uncover the real joy in giving, serving, and ultimately changing the world. The series takes place in the diverse, make-believe town of Stewardville, where sacrificial living is of utmost importance. Along the way, characters such as Pastor Hanson Feat, schoolmate Robin Tyme, neighbor Cash Pyle, missionaries Gib & Bea Moore, philanthropist Dolly Bealz, singer and poet Minnie Tallents, and conservationist Eartha Green will help Penny Nickels explore and understand how being a good steward can help make the world a better place for all.

Review

This is a great book for kids to teach them about giving back to their community and church. It depicts a family that is strong in their faith and that they need to help the less fortunate and that it doesn’t take much to change the world. It could be as simple as donating unwanted toys, clothes, etc or helping out in a soup kitchen. The family is very tied into serving others.  With the state of the world, this book couldn’t be more timely in encouraging children to look beyond their computer and toys and at what others are not as fortunate to have around them while growing up.

This is going to be a series and I look forward to seeing what else Penny Nickels is up to along with her dog Dinero.

We give this 5 paws up

If you enjoyed the Little House on the Prairie books as a child, you will probably enjoy this book! Yona was sweet enough to send me a copy and while I haven’t read it yet (that towering TBR pile), it is one that will be kept with the series of books I read and re-read many times as a young girl.

Synopsis

Many girls in elementary and middle school fall in love with the Little House books by Laura Ingalls Wilder. What they don’t always realize is that Wilder’s books are largely autobiographical, and highlight the family and friends she loved so well.

This middle-grade biography describes even more of the details of Laura’s real life as a young pioneer homesteading with her family. Complete with charming illustrations, the narrative points out the differences between the fictional series as well as the many similarities. It’s a fascinating story of a much celebrated writer.

Review

I had the opportunity to read and review these 3 children’s books and if you have young children that you want them to enjoy a book and learn something at the same time, well these are the books that fill the bill.

These may be a kid’s books but it sends a good message about eating healthy. I like that it encourages children to think about food in a healthy way and in the first book, there is a recipe for Apple cake and there are 3 versions given: a regular version, a gluten free version and a Paleo version. What more could you ask for when given a recipe in a book?!

The second book has Celia & Cedric outside trying to make treats from mud/dirt. Mom steps in and has them make dirt balls from healthy ingredients. They find it is easy to make and a delicious treat too. Even big brother likes it.

The third book has Celia & Cedric playing outside and trying to evade a green dragon. Mom has another treat up her sleeve, this time it is a smoothie and it is green thanks to the spinach. I have seen many recipes for smoothies with spinach and have yet to try one myself, but perhaps one day I’ll add a handful.

If you have young children definitely a series to give them and encourage them to think and eat healthy and even trying the recipe in the book. It looks easy enough and quite tasty too.

We give these books 5 paws up.

The moon, the stars, and a person’s love are bright and constant even when they cannot be seen.

Review

This is a sweet child’s book that doesn’t take long to read (if you are an adult) and would be a great book to give a child especially if a parent travels or is in the military and is deployed.

The illustrations are simple, as if a child drew them, which would most likely appeal to a child. The “story” is simple – that while we are apart I’ll send my hopes, dreams, love and kisses to you through the stars and moon. I think that would encourage a child to look into the sky and think about their parent or the person traveling while they are away.

I did think that some of the wording could have been better written because it didn’t always seem to flow, at least not for me (and maybe I am being too picky for a child’s book?) but overall good message.

We give it 4 paws up

The Adventures of Mophie and Picholas

Synopsis

Aside from their kind of unusual names, Mophie and Picholas are pretty much your average 6 year old girl and 3 year old boy, who live in a pretty average house, in a pretty average town. But outside of their town, well nothing is pretty average at all. For example, just a hop, skip and a jump away is a wonderful place called the Kingdom of the Magic Horses. And way down the river is the Kingdom of Bongo Bongo, ruled over by the meaner than mean, crueler than cruel, rottener than rotten Queen Blunderpuss. She is very happy trying to make everyone else very unhappy, and she has a big bully of a nephew, Bobby, who helps her do just that!

With the aid of their special friend, Sylvester (an excellent and devoted dragon if ever there was one), Mophie and Picholas go from one adventure to another, battling the Blunderpusses, as well as assorted other not-very-nice characters.

In Book 1, evil Queen Blunderpuss and Bobby try to take a happy event like a day at the park, and turn it into a gigantic, yucky disaster for our young heroes and Mophie’s good friend, Allison. Will Mophie and Picholas be able to find a way to outwit the despicable duo? And will Dad ever resume breathing normally after discovering that his children are friends with a dragon? Come along, and let’s find out!

The Adventures of Mophie and Picholas series is intended primarily for children ages 3 to 8.

Excerpt

They turned to look in the direction Mophie was pointing. And there was the answer to the mystery. Leaning against the big slide, with a sly grin on his face, was none other than Bobby Blunderpuss. Bobby was 12 years old, and the biggest bully anyone had ever known.

excerpt 1

And to make matters even worse, he was the nephew of evil Queen Blunderpuss, the ruler of the Kingdom of Bongo Bongo, which was located many miles down the river that ran through Mophie and Picholas’ town.

excerpt 2

She had super magic powers, and a lot of issues. Never a good combination. Instead of using her magic powers to help people, she used them to make people unhappy. Many times she would send her nephew Bobby to carry out her wishes. And that is exactly what happened today.

Review of The Santa Switch

Jessica Claus is not appreciated by Santa especially with the big day coming up. Well she sets Santa straight and he realizes and quickly appreciates all that she does to keep the North Pole running smoothly.

Great story for kids and will make a great holiday story to read over and over and it reminds young girls that they can do anything if they set their mind to doing whatever it is that they want to do in life.

It does leave you hanging so you have to read A Trip for Mrs Claus to see how the story ends!

We give it 5 paws

Review of A Trip for Mrs. Claus

A great follow up to The Santa Switch but with a twist. Jessica has an altruistic heart and goes back out after delivering all the toys and delivers needed food and blankets to those in need. So with a holiday story also comes a message to help those in need and it is about more than just ourselves.  Plus it continues to remind us that women can do anything that men can do, sometimes even better.

I like that the North Pole has gone techie – apps and gadgets and a sleigh on auto-pilot.  Santa is definitely in the 21st century.

Right now this book is only available as an ebook and on limited devices. Luckily I have a Kindle Fire that I could read it on because it was not available to download to my keyboard Kindle. I think the book needs to be available in print as well.

We give this book 5 paws as well.
