Review

After reading A Village Romance, I was afraid to pick this book up and read it. However, I’m not sure if the author found her groove or what because it was much better and very enjoyable. There is a little drama/mystery, some romance, betrayal and some humor.

I like how the townspeople of Little Perran come together in times of crisis. It makes me want to live there – other than having to deal with Stella who is quite the gossip and bitter as well. And while the town may seem idyllic, not everyone is perfect and they all have their own demons to battle.

While the characters may not be deep, they do have some complexity to them and all of them round out the story well.

We give this 4 paws up.

Review

This is the second book in a series and while you don’t have to read the first book, it might help to introduce some of the characters of the town. I didn’t realize it was the 2nd when I agreed to review, but as it is a novella, I don’t think I missed too much other than maybe some more details on the townspeople.

I am not sure if the copy I read was edited. The story has a lot of potential but I felt like there was a lot of back and forth that made it feel disjointed. There is one section that I thought was accidentally put in there twice until I realized it was from another POV. I didn’t quite understand why the author did this other than to understand what each character felt….but don’t think it was totally necessary. There was also a mention of a character wanting to hire a housekeeper for $25 (or 25 pounds) an hour…maybe he was used to London prices? Or maybe because he was rich he could afford it? It just didn’t seem to fit.

There are a couple of celebrities that move into town..one a brash musician and the other a quite author that is hiding from himself. However, several ladies in town see past their gruff exteriors and work their way into the men’s hearts.

The novella just sort of ends and you have to read the next one to pick up the story and where it leaves off because it does just leave you hanging.

I would give this 2 1/2 paws up.

Memory Med Res Cover

Julianne Westcott was living the kind of life that other Protestant girls in prewar Liverpool could only dream about: old money, silk ball gowns, and prominent young men lining up to escort her. But when she learns of a blind-and-deaf brother, institutionalized since birth, the illusion of her perfect life and family shatters around her.

While visiting her brother in secret, Julianne meets and befriends Kyle McCarthy, an Irish Catholic groundskeeper studying to become a priest. Caught between her family’s expectations, Kyle’s devotion to the Church, and the intense new feelings that the forbidden courtship has awakened in her, Julianne must make a choice: uphold the life she’s always known or follow the difficult path toward love.

But as war ripples through the world and the Blitz decimates England, a tragic accident forces Julianne to leave everything behind and forge a new life built on lies she’s told to protect the ones she loves. Now, after twenty years of hiding from her past, the truth finds her—will she be brave enough to face it?

Who would you cast to play your characters in a movie version of your book?

I’m still working out my ideal “Kyle”, but I could see Carey Mulligan or Lily James playing “Julieanne.”  Colin Firth for “Mr. Westcott”.  Donna Murphy for “Mrs. Westcott.”  Emily Blunt for “Lucille”.

How important are names to you in your books, and how do you choose them?

I figured out the approximate years in which the characters would be born, and then googled male and female names that were popular in those eras.  I also tried to choose names that were geographically correct.  But none of the names have a particular meaning.

What do your plans for future projects include?

Although it is only a concept right now, I have an idea for a historical novel set in New York that I am REALLY excited about starting.  I just have to decide it if will be a stand-alone or a trilogy.  There are three stories to tell, but it might be possible to do in one book.

Is there one subject you would never write about as an author? What is it?

I would say this more as a genre than a subject, but I would never write horror, erotica, or fantasy.

Do you have any strange writing habits you’d like to share with your readers?

I fall in to the category of writers who is best inspired when away from home.  I LOVE to travel, and it sparks my imagination more than anything else.  Even if I just sit in my front yard, I can see it as a little escape.  Sitting in my house just has too many distractions.

What is something you want to accomplish before you die?

My favorite quote is from Mother Teresa:  “Let no one come to you without leaving better or happier.”  It sounds like a cliché, but if I can just leave the world better than I found it, even in my tiny corner, then I would have accomplished all that I want.  I discovered a few years ago that this book and this book process are not about me.  It’s about helping other people in some way.  Particularly in inspiring them to pursue their own dreams and purposes, whatever they are.

What do you want your tombstone to say?

She didn’t waste a second.

about the author

DiMaio PicCamille is an award-winning real estate agent in San Antonio who, along with her husband of 18 years, home schools their four children. She has a bucket list that is never-ending, and uses her adventures to inspire her writing. She’s lived in Texas, Colorado, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and California, and spends enough time in Hawai’i to feel like a local. She’s traveled to four continents (so far), and met Mother Teresa and Pope John Paul II. She just about fainted when she had a chance to meet her musical idol, Paul McCartney, too. Camille studied political science in college, but found working on actual campaigns much more fun. She belts out Broadway tunes whenever the moment strikes, and forever stays up late reading “just one more chapter”. There’s almost nothing she wouldn’t try, so long as it doesn’t involve heights, roller skates, or anything illegal. “The Memory of Us” is Camille’s debut novel. Her second, “Before the Rain Falls” will be released in the spring of 2017.

Beyond Belief is the newest book in the Emily Castle series by author Helen Smith.  I have this book in my TBR pile and will get to it shortly, but this is an interesting series that I have enjoyed so far.  Definitely worth checking out next time you are looking for a mystery set in England!

beyond belief

Synopsis

When famed psychic Perspicacious Peg predicts a murder will occur at England’s Belief and Beyond conference, her science-minded colleagues recruit twenty-six-year-old budding sleuth Emily Castles to attend the event as a “future crimes investigator.” The suspected victim: celebrated magician Edmund Zenon, who plans to perform a daring stunt at the conference—and is offering fifty thousand pounds to any attendee who can prove that the paranormal exists.

In the seaside town of Torquay, Emily meets a colorful cast of characters: dramatic fortune-teller Madame Nova; kindly Bobby Blue Suit and his three psychic dachshunds; Sarah and Tim Taylor, devastated parents mourning their late son; and religious cult members Hilary, Trina, and the Colonel. Tensions rise as believers in science, the supernatural, and the spiritual clash with one another. But once a body count begins, Emily must excuse herself from the séances and positivity circles, and use old-fashioned detective work to find the killer.

Yes, it has been over 6 months since I wrote a review but life sometimes gets in the way.  That said, I have quite a few books and giveaways over the next month!

The first is The Tapestry of Love by Rosy Thornton.  Rosy was kind enough to send me a book last fall that I read but was not able to post my review until now.  My apologies Rosy!

I think many will be able to relate to this storyline.  Catherine divorces her husband and needs a change of pace and decides to do it in a small town in the Cévennes mountains.  She is a talented seamstress and decides to offer custom items such as draperies and needlework but doesn’t realize the hoops she must jump through courtesy of the French government.  However, in her quest for her independence she befriends the townspeople especially her closest neighbors.  They become her surrogate family and watch out for each other and help each other in times of need, sorrow and happiness.  Much like you would come to expect from a small town where everyone knows each other and their business!  Catherine experiences joy, sadness, anger and even love throughout the book in the various situations, nothing different than what you or I might experience in our normal lives.

I enjoyed the book and would give it 4 stars.  I felt the main character in the book overcame many obstacles in her quest for independence but also broadened her views on life and love.  She did have to dealwith some obstacles in her path in this quest for a better life, but these challenges only helped her become a better person.  I felt like the character continued to grow throughout the novel and encouraged me to think about my own life and would I make some of the same choices that Catherine made or would I have chosen a different path.

Now for the fun part – the giveaway!  Rosy kindly provided a copy of her book to me and I would like to share this with one of my lucky readers.  Since it is a thicker book, I do need to limit it to US residents only.  Leave a comment with your email address and why you would like to read this book.  If you post the giveaway on your blog, leave a second comment for another chance to win.

Contest will close on Sunday June 26th around 5pm CT, so get your entries in now!
