Synopsis

These were only the beginning of Fawn Malero’s problems, but they coincided with a vampire wedding-of-the-century coming to town and that made them a top priority. And as Logan began to take on more duties as pack Alpha, her loyalties were being tested by everyone. Could she run part of the city and part of the pack?

Then the burglaries started… of human homes, threatening exposure!

Being pulled in so many directions, Fawn feared she was failing her father and the supernaturals of Seattle leaving them open for challengers to their authority. Will Fawn’s ability to enlist the help of other supernaturals be enough? Or will they finally see that she doesn’t have what it takes to keep Seattle safe and its supernaturals hidden?

A Life With Beasts (The Fawn Malero Mysteries Book 1)

“A Life with Beasts is a story of intrigue and attraction that is especially recommended for mystery readers who enjoy more than a light dose of paranormal encounters and a touch of romance.”-D. Donovan, Midwest Book Review

“a fun adventure/mystery. Courtney Davis brings a fresh perspective to the supernatural creatures we are all familiar with without sacrificing the original ideas associated with them. She creates an exciting world of werewolves, vampires, witches/warlocks, magicians, trolls, and many others.
The book is easy to read and fast-paced. It’s a great read for the summer holidays or when you want a light, fun read. Can’t wait for the sequel!
Also, there is a healthy dose of romance, which can tend to be a bit much for those who don’t read romance (like me). However, Davis has done a great job of making the romance central to the plot, so I found it quite enjoyable.”- Writa Bhattacharjee, GoodReads

“This was a fast read and I really enjoyed it. It gave me some high school Twilight memories but brought more supernatural beings into play. There were several mysteries and problems being solved but they didn’t feel. I found the characters likeable and funny.”-Sara, GoodReads

Supernatural P.I. (The Fawn Malero Mysteries Book 2)

“a must read for all paranormal fantasy fans. From werewolves to vampires, to elves and witches this book has it all. My curiosity grew with each page. The plot has a lot of twists and turns. Magic, mayhem, romance issues, and so much more are included. Courtney Davis writes well. Her characters leap off the pages.
There was never a dull moment. I love that I could read this and dive right into this magical world. It is the second book in the series. Courtney Davis and her mystery series are now added to my favorites.”-Urban Book Reviews

a fantastic paranormal mystery/romance with a compelling and fun protagonist, and brilliant world building.  Davis’ writing is impeccable, and I enjoyed the way that she balanced the mystery, romance and comedy aspects of the novel. I also loved the way it ended! This is what all paranormal mysteries should be! _”-Bee, Book Pleasures.com

“This was a great read and one that I cannot stop thinking about!  This is a madcap adventure that you are bound to have fun reading! Five stars for Fawn Malero!”-Nora, Storeybook Reviews

Guest Post – Deleted Scenes

The story of getting this book written is a frustrating one. The whole series has a kind of journey though. In 2020 when I decided, after nine years to get back to writing I wanted to do something fun, urban fantasy and mainstream. So I thought up Fawn Malero, a magician born with supernatural powers living in Seattle where there were supernatural creatures living lives all around, of course humans know nothing of them.

If I am recalling events right, I wrote the first two books in the series then started trying to get it published and while I was doing that I wrote, A Werewolf in Women’s Clothes which is an urban fantasy werewolf romance. I did find a small print publisher willing to give Fawn a shot and I was so excited! So I sent it to them saying I wanted it to be a whole series and already had the second one written. While they had that in que, I wrote up numbers three and four of the series and shopped around A Werewolf in Women’s Clothes.

Then the publisher shut down… no book published.

I had already had A Werewolf in Women’s Clothes published with DXVaros by then, so I asked them if they wanted to take on the series, four written and ready to go! Lucky for me they wanted it and I was once again ready to publish this fun series, and with all four written, what a great deal.

Then a few months later I discovered that number four had disappeared into the internet void. I was going to have to rewrite it.

I put it off because I knew I could but I didn’t want to. Starting completely over felt beyond frustrating.

I had no choice though, not only was it contracted, but I love Fawn and her story so I wanted to write more of it. So I rewrote #4, changing the title from Hexes and Bows which featured a Cupid, to Lucky Rabbit’s Foot featuring a rabbit problem and some weather issues. I got about 6K words in and didn’t like it, I scrapped it, and started again. This time I didn’t change the plot, just the details, so here is a bit of the second original beginning of Fawn Malero #4, unedited of course so keep that in mind.

Deleted Scene

Bunnies started showing up in my yard about a week ago and I may be the most animal friendly supernatural in Seattle, but I had no interest in running a bunny rescue sanctuary.

“You can’t take care of all of them,” Logan snapped for the hundredth time.

“And what do you want me to do? Eat them?” I snapped back because I knew he ate bunnies, at least when he was in his Werewolf form and me, I was a vegetarian.

“You’re a Magician who communicates with animals, can’t you just tell them to go away?”

“No,” I said between gritted teeth. “I can’t, because they won’t talk to me.” I’d tried endlessly but they were all mute, I didn’t know where they were coming from or why!

We’d had this conversation every morning for the last four days. I had never run into such a problem before but no matter what little noises they made, it gave me nothing and even my empathetic drive wasn’t tingling, they weren’t in need of help, at least according to my supernatural abilities.

“Twenty, Fawn, there are twenty god damn bunnies in the yard.”

I crossed my arms and glared at Logan, he’d been extra edgy since Jasmine had shown up a couple weeks ago and kissed me as if we were still sixteen and could continue our relationship where we’d left off. She was on the run from her husband and pregnant with no money and nowhere to go. I didn’t want to date her, but I couldn’t tell her to leave, she had nowhere to go. Logan thought I should send her to my parents’, but I didn’t feel right about that either, she did need my help and my empathetic drive was screaming to give her what she needed. Right now that was a place to stay and a part time job at my yoga studio.

I glared at Logan, refusing to let him intimidate me with his alpha male bullshit. “I’ll gather them up and take them to the pet store, okay?”

He gave me a hard look, a quick kiss, then left, off to work and I needed more coffee.

“I’m sorry about the bunnies,” Jasmine said, coming out of Betina’s room in a robe, obviously she hadn’t wanted to face Logan’s grumpiness this morning, I didn’t blame her.

I had done a late-night class at my twenty-four-hour yoga studio, and I was dragging, but Logan yelling about more bunnies this morning had gotten me out of bed. “Not your fault,” I reassured her around a yawn.

“I don’t think so either, but—”

“But nothing, unless you developed a new ability, animal attraction isn’t your fault.”

She laughed, “No, nothing that cool.” She wiggled her fingers, and I could see a pulse of electricity spark between her fingers. She had a very good defensive ability, and I envied her that. She could also hold her breath for like thirty minutes and had perfect balance, she should have been a ballerina. She was pretty enough to be one too, slim, and blonde with big eyes and flawless skin. It was no wonder I’d fallen in love with her at sixteen. She was everything I wasn’t.

Evie popped in then, dressed for morning in a robe as well, apparently everyone was taking today at a slow pace. “I don’t think you should get rid of the bunnies, Fawn, they are so cute.”

“I had to save three from Jasper and Sophia yesterday,” I grumbled. My cats were happy little hunters with the bunnies all around, some of which were still fairly small. Pumpkin didn’t really care, but she was more of a lay around and nap kind of cat. Jasper and Sophia liked to go out and play at being wild animals.

Chester, my parakeet flew in tweeting a happy good morning. He landed on Jasmine and she patted him a little too hard, gaining a peck on her finger before he flew off to perch on top of the cabinets. She watched him go with an offended tilt to her mouth.

I sat at the table with my coffee and stared out the window. Bunnies hopped around and ate grass. It was late October and I had no idea how well bunnies could survive a Seattle winter outside. “Why won’t they talk to me?”

“Maybe they don’t want to, not everyone needs to go on and on about their problems,” Evie said with a sigh.

I glared at her as I sipped my coffee. Evie was a judgmental old ghost, but she wasn’t wrong. There’d been a lot of complaining about life around here lately. Jasmine wasn’t sure what she was going to do, how long before her husband found her, and what to do with a baby apparently. Betina was unhappy because her boyfriend was visiting his sister at Brakemoor and Logan was made about jasmine but complained about the bunnies as a cover.

The damn bunnies. “I can’t help them if I don’t know why they’re here.”

“How are they getting in, your yard is fully fenced?” Jasmine asked as she made a cup of herbal tea, something Annabel had left to help her with morning sickness. I wouldn’t normally trust anything a Witch made, but Annabel was half Elf and one of my best friends, so I knew it was safe, and besides, I wasn’t the one drinking it.

“I’m not sure, there must be a hole somewhere.”

“Maybe one of the dogs—” Evie started then stopped, gasped, and popped out.

My stomach clenched at the reminder that my dogs were gone, buried in the back yard because of Ben. Luckily Ben was also dead and buried, but it still hurt. I missed them.

“I’ll check the fence for holes later, but that still doesn’t explain why they are here or tell me what to do with them.”

“Sell them,” Jasmine suggested happily.

“To who?”

“Farmers, little kids… too bad it’s not spring they’d make great Easter presents. Maybe you can give them out to trick-or-treaters,” she laughed.

I couldn’t help smiling, imagining the look on parents’ faces as I handed their little ghosts and goblins a live bunny instead of a mars bar.

“Maybe the zoo wants them.” I really hated to do that though, I knew how those animals felt about being in there, it wasn’t good.

“So what’s on the agenda today? I told Betina I would come into the yoga studio this morning so she could show me how to work the computer.”

“Great, I need to check out a couple of leads on that weird weather happening near Olympia and I guess I’ll call a few pet shops.”

Jasmine headed back to her room, well, Betina’s room and I stared out at the bunnies. I wasn’t going to go out there until I finished my coffee.

An hour later I had found a pet store willing to take in the bunnies and was on my hands and knees at the back of my property. I’d definitely found a hole and it was easy to fix. I shoved a few rocks in it and felt very satisfied. Rounding them up was not so easy. I got out my dog carriers and threw some carrots in and waited and waited.

“Get in the damn cage,” I hissed but they just hopped around like I was an idiot and maybe I was for thinking the stupid things would listen to me, they wouldn’t even talk to me!

I gave up after only corralling ten of the damn things, but at least it was a start. My car was still at Tony’s shop getting a scratch removed so I had to put the cage in the back of Cole’s car. I’d stolen it after he kidnapped me, but then he ended up dead, so I guess it all worked out. It was a bit creepy to drive it, but I didn’t have much choice. I didn’t want to keep driving my car with the word Bitch, scratched into the side, people gave me weird looks. I hoped Tony would be back from Brakemoor soon and finish up the repaint though, driving Cole’s car was creepy.

I threw my hair into a ponytail and pulled a sweater over my t-shirt. There was dirt on my jeans, but I didn’t care at the moment. I wanted to take care of at least part of this bunny problem.

When I walked into the pet store, I was assaulted by hopeful pleas from most of the animals. Unlike the zoo, these animals knew there was something better coming, they’d likely get adopted and have a good life. I still felt bad for them all, I wish I could take them all home with me and I thought for the first time since my dogs passed away that perhaps I could adopt a new dog, when I was sure the bunny problem was taken care of anyway.

All my animals had been strays that found their way to my home though, as if they’d known I was the right human to take care of them and I was sort of holding out hope that another dog would show up at the right time for me to bring into my life. Adopting one from a shop didn’t quite seem right.

I approached the young woman behind the counter and gave her a big smile. “I have some bunnies to drop off. I talked to Charlie on the phone.” She looked like she was still in high school and barely cared about the job. She’d barely looked up when I walked in.

“I’ll get him,” she said with a heavy sigh then yelled. “Charlie, bunnies are here!”

I cringed at the shrill yell, and so did the parrot that was perched behind her.

“Thanks,” I hissed and crouched down to make sure the bunnies all looked okay. “How’s it going guys, you will all find homes soon, I’m sure.” I looked at the fuzzy little things as I whispered sweetly to them.

Nothing, they just stared at me and moved their tiny noses. They said nothing and it was really weirding me out.

“Fawn?” A Voice asked and I stood and turned to meet a friendly face I vaguely recognized. “Fawn Malero?”

“Um, yeah,” I said cautiously. I couldn’t remember if I had given my last name over the phone or not and I was suddenly on edge.

“We had some vet classes together, remember?” He held out his hand and a fuzzy memory surfaced.

“Charlie Stone?”

His eyes lit up and he grasped my hand tightly. “Yep! How’s it going, you stopped coming.”

“Oh, yeah I decided I was better off concentrating on my yoga studio.”

“Yoga!” he said brightly, and his eyes slid down my body making me thankful I’d dressed in jeans and had a jacket on. I remembered him now, he was always staring at the girls in class, if I’d had to bet on someone being a psychotic serial killer, my money would have been on him and not Ben, obviously I was a terrible judge.

“So I have these bunnies,” I said to distract him and stepped back, glancing at the girl behind the counter who was glaring at Charlie and me. I really hoped he wasn’t sleeping with her.

“Yeah, I cleaned out a cage for them in the front window, bunnies go fast, every little kid thinks they make a great pet. They don’t.” He started walking, not offering to carry the cage.

I frowned, wondering if I was making a mistake bringing them here, I didn’t want them to end up in unhappy homes. But I was sure I didn’t have a better solution, so I grabbed the cage and followed him to the front of the store. The cages were set against the big front window and would draw the attention of everyone who passed. They may not all find forever homes right away, but I was sure they wouldn’t be here long.

“In fact I’ve gotten several calls this week from families asking for bunnies to replace theirs that have run away. It’s been weird, but now I can tell them I have replacements on hand.” He paused and looked at me guiltily. “I uh, can pay you for them of course.”

“No, don’t worry about it, you’re doing me a favor, really. I’ll bring more too if I can catch them in my yard.”

He nodded and started taking the bunnies out and putting them in the cage.  “Wow ten and you have more in your yard? What did you do, plant a carrot garden?” He laughed and I gave him a strained smile.

“I wish I knew,” I said honestly. But at least I plugged the hole, so hopefully I wouldn’t be seeing any more. When he pulled the last one out, he didn’t immediately put it in the cage, he held it and pet it absently as he stared at me expectantly.

“So, I’ll see you again soon then?”

“If I can catch them.” I tried to sound casual, but I was feeling creeped and slammed the carrier shut. Apparently, it was too aggressive for the little white rabbit in Charlie’s hands, because it freaked and bit him. Charlie screamed, the bunny was dropped and started running. The girl behind the counter shrieked as the furry bunny ran under her feet and the Parrot squawked angrily for everyone to be quiet.

“Damnit Sharon, get it,” Charlie yelled as he held his bleeding hand. The bunny had gotten him good. Blood was hitting the floor and I was about to the limit of what I wanted to handle. I grabbed the cage and waved as I quickly headed out the door. I heard a crash before the door closed fully behind me and Charlie started yelling. Damn, maybe I should find a different pet store to bring the next batch to.

A woman was leaning against the car when I got to it, a Witch I could tell when I got close. She had an air of crazy about her, and a smell of herbs drifted to me on the wind. She was dressed in black skinny jeans and a purple corset top under a jean jacket. Her makeup was dark and heavily applied, and her blonde hair was in twin braids down her back.

At first she just looked at me with mild curiosity but when it became obvious that I was heading toward her and the car, her eyes narrowed, and the corners of her mouth turned down.

“Who the fuck are you?” she demanded when I stopped at the car.

“Fawn Malero, can I help you with something?”

“Shit, no way!” She slumped. “I guess that means Cole’s dead or run off again?”

“Yeah.” I wasn’t sure I wanted to give this woman the news, she didn’t seem like an upset girlfriend, but she knew enough about Cole to know my name, that meant they’d been close.

“I haven’t heard from him in a while so when I saw his car I thought I’d wait him out.” She looked at me and tilted her head. “He’s dead, isn’t he?”

“Yeah.”

She nodded and a glimpse of grief passed over her face. “Dumbass didn’t know when to give up. I told him his jealousy was going to be the end of him.”

“Jealousy?”

“Yeah, apparently he always felt like his parents favored his little brother over him, made all the worse when his brother took your side of things recently.”

I couldn’t deny the logic of that so I just nodded.

“I’m Riva by the way.” She held out her hand and I shook it cautiously. “I wasn’t his girlfriend,” she said quickly. “Just a friend.”

“You aren’t from here,” I pointed out. I knew the faces of every witch in the local coven and this was definitely not one of them.

“No, just passing through. My husband and I actually.” She looked uncomfortable and took a step away from me. “I probably won’t see you around, Fawn,” she said with a small wave then turned and hurried down the street.

“Weird,” I muttered as I unlocked the car door and shoved the kennel in the backseat. I was going to have to warn Logan, and maybe Annabel too. A strange Witch in town could be cause for concern.

Guest Review by Nora

A madcap adventure of supernatural fun and drama! I devoured this book, reading it in one sitting overnight and I get the feeling a lot fans of this series can say the same.

If you were anticipating the new Fawn Malero book, you won’t be disappointed in this installment. If you haven’t read any of the books in the series, you are in for a treat!  You don’t even need to start with the first book.  However, after reading just one book in the series, I am sure you will want to read them all!

The characters in this series are always my favorite part. I love the different species and all of the different ways that they interact with each other. Courtney Davis has written a world where elves, vampires, trolls, witches and just about every supernatural being you can think of live together, keeping themselves secret from the human, and, of course, there are clashes.

In this book, those clashes get pretty serious.

See, there is a big vampire wedding that is going to be happening soon and, in order for it to go off without a hitch, a few problems have to be solved first. Mostly, Fawn has to figure out what is causing the strange weather that has been hovering over Seattle for weeks.

Going from blistering hot one minute to blizzard and freezing temperatures the next, the weather swiftly goes from perplexing, to downright dangerous– and all of it seems to be centered around the iconic Space Needle. Little by little, and with the help of her friends, Fawn begins to uncover who is behind the mysteries that have taken over the city.

As I said, the magic of this story (besides all of the literal magic, of course) lies in the characters. Fawn and her friends are so fun, lively and downright interesting that I can’t imagine any reader won’t care about them from page one, I know I did!

My favorite book of the year, by far. ‘Lucky Rabbit’s Foot (The Fawn Malero Mysteries Book 4),’ is definitely worth the read for any lovers of supernatural mysteries!

Review

This is the second in a series about a woman who discovers her psychic abilities but uses them to help ghosts move on to a better place.

This story was fascinating and had ties to the Underground Railroad in her town. However, not everyone in town is on board with uncovering the secrets at the library. I won’t say who or why, you’ll have to read the book for that information. But it is understandable that this character didn’t want the family name drug through the mud for something an ancestor had done. However, the actions of this character might lead one to believe there is a nefarious plot to stop the search for the strange noises coming from the library.

We have many of the main characters return in this second book, including Joanna’s children, the psychic support group, and her contractor Sal. They are all instrumental in helping uncover the truth. However, her support group tends to cause more trouble due to their excitement about the situation and just wanting to be involved. Some people just can’t follow directions!

I enjoyed the mystery and felt that the story was well laid out. It moved at a constant pace, not too fast or too slow.

While I am normally on the fence when it comes to paranormal stories, I have enjoyed this series and can’t wait to see what the author has planned next.

We give this book 4 paws up.

Review

This story is spooky, suspenseful, and with a twist of romance to keep a reader engrossed in the book.

I loved this book! The mystery kept me engaged while trying to figure out who the ghost was and why were they haunting the farm. I did figure it out before the reveal at the end, but it was by chance. I think I picked up on a few clues that might have been obscure but stood out in my mind. I won’t tell you what they are because you need to read the book yourself and figure it out. I will say that there were a few twists that I wasn’t expecting when everything was revealed.

I really enjoyed Callie’s character. She has had a tough life, but she keeps rolling with the punches. I wonder if an accident that took her boyfriend’s life is what opened her mind to be able to communicate with ghosts. Anything is possible. Luke is the skeptical grandson, but there is an attraction between these two that will not be denied.  The romance between these two is clean, and most of it is “behind closed doors,” which was fine with me because detailed scenes weren’t needed.

The haunting scenes are descriptive and made me a little nervous. I know I don’t have ghosts around my house, but it made me wonder what might happen if I did.

This was the first book I have read by this author, but it won’t be the last. We give this book 5 paws up.

Tess Corona left home thanks to a traumatic experience with the paranormal and has only recently returned home from a secretive military career. Her only desire is to reconnect with her family and find meaningful work. That plan changes when a Texas Ranger lands on her doorstep looking for her twin brother.

Thanks to the suspicious actions of a murder victim’s family, Texas Ranger Crock Ward is asked to investigate the twenty-five-year-old case. With the evidence missing and victim’s husband now deceased, Crock seeks alternatives to solve the murder in the form of Dr. Lazaro Corona and his ghost hunting team.

Laz has dreamed of combining cold cases with paranormal investigation, but he curses the timing. He can’t stop Tess from resuming her role in his investigation any more than he can stop a tornado or a century-old feud that has already destroyed one family and now threatens his.

This book has the perfect blend of paranormal, mystery/suspense, ghosts, and even a bit of romance. I don’t know if the author plans to make this a series (it does say book 1 in a few places), but she should! I can see future cases with Tess, Laz, and Crock. There is a smidge at the ending that leads one to believe this might happen…fingers crossed!

Tess is a bit lost after leaving the military. For now, she is living with her brother, niece, and grandmother until she can figure out what to do with her life. I can understand her weariness and uncertainty regarding her future. She is suffering from some PTSD from some situations that she is keeping close to the vest. The truth does eventually come out, and it is a bit of a surprise to everyone. There are a few hints that it is more than she lets on, but not many.

Laz is a professor at TCU but has other dreams for his career. He enjoys researching cultural rituals, which allows him to provide insight into this case that Crock has brought to them. I found his knowledge fascinating, and it brings a different dynamic to solving the crime at hand.

Crock is a handsome Texas Ranger trying to get back to 100% after an event puts him on medical leave. However, after working with Tess and Laz, he learns a little bit more about himself, and I think it even gives him more confidence than he had before.

The rest of the Corona family is quite a hoot. Gram acts crazy, but she really isn’t. There are some facts that are shared toward the end of the book that shine a new light on her abilities. Laz’s daughter is quite precocious for a three-year-old. I can only imagine what it is like dealing with her on a daily basis since she seems wise for her years.

The interactions between Tess, Laz, and Crock reflect the type of team they could become if they decide to go down this path. All three have some psychic ability, which makes them a formidable team while trying to solve the unsolved murder of Esme Green. The answer just might surprise you once all is revealed. I enjoyed following the path and trying to determine what actually happened and who was to blame. I can tell you right now I did not uncover the truth.

This book was hard for me to put down. I wanted to understand more, uncover more clues, and I rooted for a spark between Tess and Crock to lead to a relationship. It didn’t hurt that the book is set in my part of Texas. I could imagine the various locations around town, which helped me brush a clearer picture in my mind. I enjoyed the full cast of characters and can envision a full series.

We give this book 5 paws up.

Guest Review by Nora

A paranormal romance with just the right combination of sweet, cute, and sexy.

‘Saving the Selkie’s Heart’ is the second book in Elle Rose’s ‘The Selkie Seas’ series and takes place just weeks after the events of the first book. Having read that book, I was pretty excited for this one, and it did not disappoint!

The romance between Lyall and Ceannas tugged at my heartstrings and made me want to keep reading well after my bedtime. But even apart from the romance, I really appreciated Lyall as a strong female main character and for the harrowing journey that she undertook to save her father’s life.

Lyall decides that she must seek out the wisest member of her family’s selkie clan so that the Great Elder might save her father, but there’s only one problem. Lyall isn’t a selkie like her parents are. She doesn’t have the ability to transform into a seal. Or, at least, she thinks that she doesn’t. But with a little help from strong, capable Ceannas, who is guarding the clan as they migrate for the first time in 50 years, Lyall begins to realize her selkie destiny and take charge of it in her own way.

It’s pretty clear from Ella Rose’s writing that she knows how to write one heck of a romance, as well as build a world around it that will leave the reader invested in even the minor characters. Not every author is capable of that, and her books are worth the read for the world-building alone.

This book was such a good read that, despite the fact that it is not short, I read it all the way through in one night. I just couldn’t put it down! This series is perfection, and I recommend picking up both books! I can hardly wait for book 3!

Guest Post from Ella

Thank you for graciously hosting me today. As you know, my Selkie Seas series—Losing the Selkie’s Skin (Book 0.5), Stealing the Selkie’s Heart (Book 1), and Saving the Selkie’s Heart (Book 2)—revolves around the lives of selkies and other sea creatures in the historical Scottish town of Selbane. But most of the people I encounter have no idea what a selkie is! So, I’m here to set the record straight on these kickass creatures.

Here are 5 Things You Need to Know About the Selbane Selkies:

  1. Selkies are seal shapeshifters, according to Scottish folklore. But unlike most shapeshifters, selkies wear their sealskin like a cape: it goes around their shoulders and fastens down the front of the torso by way of small hooks that fasten together. To shape change into a seal, they put their sealskin on and fasten the hooks; to change back into a human again, they unhook the fasteners with their teeth and emerge from beneath the sealskin as a naked human.
  2. If selkies are born when their parents are in human form, they appear as human, too, and are unable to change into selkies until they reach twenty-two years of age. There is a chance, however, that they may not be capable of changing at all, which is a problem for my heroine, Lyall, in Saving the Selkie’s Heart. It is more common for selkies to be born when their parents were in seal form, thus ensuring their offspring are born as seals and able to change into human form at will.
  3. Selkies are bound to their sealskins by magic. In my Selkie Seas world, selkies feel a constant “tug” towards their sealskin when they are in their human form, which allows them to geographically locate the skin while they are separated from it. But if someone else touches the sealskin, the magic connection switches to the new owner, and the selkie can no longer tell where it is. This allows a human (such as my heroine, Una, in Stealing the Selkie’s Heart) to bind a selkie to herself for as long as she wishes, until she returns the skin to the selkie.
  4. Selkies have their own magic, aside from the connection to their sealskins. The Selkie Seas characters (which all belong to the same group, Liath Clann), all speak of a mythological creature called a buidseach. The buidseach is a sort of selkie witch, a female selkie who can command all manner of magic. While the king and queen of Liath Clann, as well as the Great Elder from Saving the Selkie’s Heart, have their own special gifts, only a buidseach is considered to have true, strong magical abilities, like restorative healing powers or using glamour to appear in different human forms. Such a creature is said, among Liath Clann, to be mythical, but some brave characters manage to interact with them and come out unscathed on the other side.
  5. It is possible for selkies to find their True Mate, the other half of their soul. Such a connection is only rumored to exist, usually in the form of a story told by the friend of a friend whose cousin’s sister heard about a pair of True Mates once long ago. The True Mate connection can be hinted at when the proper pair is in close proximity of each other, and it feels like a second set of lungs breathing or hearts beating just out of sync with each other. To fully solidify the True Mate bond, the couple must climax together during intimacy. Once in place, the True Mate bond allows the couple to send glimpses of emotion and strong feelings down the bond to each other, though they cannot read minds.

Those are just a hint of some of the intricacies that comprise the inhabitants of Selbane. As always, if you have selkie questions or curiosities about the Selkie Seas world, email me! You can always catch me at ellarose@ellarosebooks.com.

Best,

Ella Rose

An absolutely stunning story that brings the reader in from the very first page!

‘Hunterland,’ by Dana Claire is unlike anything that I have ever read before. And I’ve read a lot of books. From the very beginning, I had no idea where this story was headed and once, I figured it out, I knew I was going to enjoy it!

This story is a YA paranormal romance, but even if you don’t normally enjoy that type of book, I think you will like this. Told from duel POVs, ‘Hunterland,’ is the story of one young man and one young woman who join forces to fight an unspeakable evil.

Liam Hunter is a trained professional. That is, at 18, he has faced down so many supernatural creatures that he’s lost count. And he has won every fight. With his father, who poses as an FBI agent, and his younger sister, the Hunter family is a monster-hunting crew who protect our world from evil without us even knowing it.

At the beginning of this story, he arrives in a small town called Falkville Falls, that is being plagued by a supernatural creature that is killing nurses. Also in town is Olivia Davis, a local girl who unwittingly becomes involved in the investigation. As the daughter of a police officer, Olivia is used to investigations, but this one is a whole different situation and when she meets Liam, her world is completely turned upside down.

These two have to work together despite their immediate dislike for one another and find a way to stop the monster that is killing innocent people and may be after Olivia herself.

This was a five-star novel for me and one that I could see myself reading again and again! I loved the chemistry between Liam and Olivia’s characters and found their romance very cute. This is a must read! I also think is would be a great book to become a feature movie, on the big screen!

Excerpt

Anger prickled down my arms, and I curled fists by my sides, flexing until veins pushed against my skin. They’d killed an innocent girl, leaving a body no parent should have to bury.

“Shall we teach them a thing or two?” Dad asked, voice thick with the same rage simmering inside me. He handed me a stake from his crossbody bag.

“With pleasure, old man.” My fingers curled around the weapon’s hilt.

The vamp to the right went for Dad. He moved fast, but Dad jumped clear of his grasp. The other vamp charged me, and anticipation coiled my muscles and sharpened my vision. I waited till the last possible moment, then leaped into a spinning kick, burying my heel in the vamp’s gut. I heard the spike Dad installed in the heel of my shoe spring free on impact, and the vamp reeled backward, clutching the hole I’d gored in his side.

He howled but shot right back up. I rarely played with my prey, but knowing we’d been seconds away from saving that poor, desecrated girl ate at me. I’d make him suffer as she’d suffered.

The vamp slashed at me with his talons, but I dipped under his arm and whirled, slamming my left fist into his face. My knuckles burned, but it was worth it. He swayed like a drunkard, dazed.

“Stop screwing around,” Dad ordered between heavy breaths. “Let’s end this.”

“With pleasure,” I said, grinning.

Synopsis

It’s a magical book club! When this group chooses a book, magic happens. The mystery comes to life, and they find themselves part of the story. To exit the book and get back home, they need to solve the mystery and reach The End.

This time, the club chooses a book called The Great Cake Rivalry, because, well … cake! They read the back cover, and it’s unanimous. So off they go into another grand adventure into a town aptly named Frosting.

Frosting is a rural town in an idyllic setting. The people live quiet lives most of the year. But in the spring, things change. The Annual Cake Competition becomes the focus of every man, woman, and child. They take this competition seriously. The cakes are spectacular. The festival is fabulous. For a week, there are contests featuring all kinds of cakes. The people of the community become official tasters and vote for the winning cakes in each category.

The grand finale is a display of finely decorated cakes made by the town’s bakeries. The winner of the best design receives a prize package that would make any baker dizzy.

Sadly, this event has been tainted. Once a year, each one different, but all somehow related to this event, a person is murdered. The main investigator is stumped, but that could be because he’s an inept buffoon.

Can the book club help the people of this community figure out who is causing this disturbing pattern of deaths, and stop another murder from happening? Can they figure out why some of the citizens dress so oddly, and why they always wear those unique backpacks? All while they fill themselves to the brim with cake, of course.

Review

I still love this concept, a book within a book, and this one does not disappoint. Paige, Glo, and the gang are picking their next book to dive into, literally. Their new pick is a modern-day setting with a paranormal aspect with the characters in the book since they can see Mollie (a ghost that is now part of the group from the previous book) and hear Frank, the cat.

The book they chose starts off differently because it is in the voice of the killer, but that doesn’t make their job any easier to uncover that person. There is a smaller set of characters that could be the culprit, but the clues really don’t start revealing themselves until near the end. I thought I had the mystery solved at the end, but I was wrong. I think my mouth dropped when they unmasked the killer because it wasn’t anyone on my radar.

There is a new discovery in the Inn they own and where the magical library is housed, a room that holds the books of all previous book clubs and their adventures. This book club has apparently gone on for centuries, and there might be a little more to Frank than we know after a drunken incident and his ramblings. Only future books will reveal those truths.

As with other books, a character can choose to stay in the book they are in, with the book club writing the ending that includes leaving that person behind. There is one character that finds their match, and who could blame them for wanting to stay behind? You’ll have to read the book to learn who it is.

I enjoy this series and look forward to the next book. We give this one 5 paws up.

Review

If you like ghostly mysteries, then check out this book. It is the first in a series with a middle-aged divorced woman that has the gift of communicating with ghosts.

I have to admit that I didn’t remember that from the synopsis, so when I started the book I felt a little lost. It seemed like things were happening without that background information until a little later. However, once that information is disclosed, some of the incidents make a lot more sense.

Joanna is a likable character, as are many of the main characters we meet. This is set in a somewhat smaller town, so gossip abounds and there will always be the “haters.” I liked that Joanna wasn’t afraid to go after what she wanted, and the main things was remodeling her home. As it is with older homes, when you start working one thing you find five other things wrong. Good thing she had a good contractor helping her with those renovations.

When Joanna first meets the ghost, it was a bit unnerving, but as time went on, she discovered a mystery that needed to be solved. As an author, she did a lot of research for her books, so researching this ghost and what happened to her wasn’t too hard. Now it was a matter of finding someone that believed her and would take another look at this supposedly solved case.

I won’t give you any spoilers, but I was quite surprised at how the mystery unraveled itself. Considering the individual involved, it could have blown up even more so.

This was an enjoyable storyline and it kept me engaged. There were times when I thought the writing felt stilted, or there information was repeated multiple times. However, that did not detract from my enjoyment of this book.

We give it 4 paws up.

Aromatherapy candles by Valona Jones

Can you resist cinnamon-scented air? Most of us respond to pleasing aromas. It’s no wonder we love to gather in kitchens, when the scent of delicious food draws us in.

The smell of fresh bread baking and a favorite stew simmering on the stove make my mouth water. The scent fills me with hunger and builds a sense of anticipation for the reward of savoring the dish. The enticing scents of coffee brewing, brownies baking, or even food grilling over charcoal will trigger desire/hunger in nearly everyone.

With that said, it’s easy to see why scents became paired with candles.

How many times have we sought out a special flower, blooming shrub, or evergreen tree? Fragrances catch our notice, they reel us in. As a bonus, scents play on our emotions, evoke strong memories, and even teach us things we like or to avoid. That natural response is both innate and primitive.

For as long as I can remember, my family used many candles. They were decorative and functional as we lived in a coastal area fraught with strong storms and frequent power outages. Bayberry scented candles were popular for holidays, as was apple cinnamon, and I still associate those aromas with home.

Some scents energize us physically, emotionally, mentally, or spiritually. Some, like lavender, are known to calm and relax people, while others may enhance thinking or clarity, though those responses may be highly individual. There are essential oils associated with relieving multiple human conditions including end-of-life ones, and fyi candles aren’t the only means to infuse the fragrance in the air. Diffusers, atomizers, steamers, baths, hot cloths on faces, and massages also help to disperse essential oils into breathable vapors.

According to the National Institute of Health, “Aromatherapy is the use of essential oils from plants (flowers, herbs, or trees) as a complementary health approach. The essential oils are most often used by inhaling them or by applying a diluted form to the skin. Many essential oils are used in aromatherapy, including those from Roman chamomile, geranium, lavender, tea tree, lemon, ginger, cedarwood, and bergamot.”( https://www.nccih.nih.gov/health/aromatherapy )

In addition, many consider aromatherapy to be an alternative medicine. Today’s medical profession even has scientific articles where this helpfulness has been documented.

The fictional Book and Candle Shop, located on Bristol Street in Savannah, Georgia, is featured in my A Magic Candle Shop Mystery series. The shop is known for their excellent products, particularly their aromatherapy candles. The way the candles are made in the shop’s stillroom is similar to other aromatherapy candle making, with the exception of an extra step. First Auntie O and then Tabby Winslow learned how to imbue good energy in her candles as she crafts them. That process means that the candle imparts goodness to those nearby throughout the entire burn.

In “Snuffed Out,” the story opens with a dissatisfied customer who felt no added oomph from the last shop candles she bought. Turns out that Auntie O forgot to tell Tabby about that extra part as it came to her so intuitively, she didn’t think of it as a candle making step. Once Tabby corrects her process, she makes perfect aromatherapy candles.

But it’s too late for Blithe McAdam. This distraught customer’s showdown in The Book and Candle Shop goes viral online. Worse Blithe is murdered, and the cops put Tabby’s shop clerk, Gerard, at the top of their suspect list. With twins Tabby and Sage very new to owning and running the shop, they can’t afford to lose Gerard. Tabby vows to investigate and set things right.

Can a wrong be rectified in death?

Eight months ago, Simone experienced her first spectral encounter. It awakened a dormant second sight and opened a chasm to the afterlife. Now, another spirit from 1917 New Orleans has wandered through that passage, haunting her with an intoxicating jasmine fragrance and wicked antics.

She’s a lady of the night who lived a dangerous life in the infamous Storyville. A place lined with mansion-like brothels on the edge of the French Quarter run by unscrupulous madams and frequented by dangerous criminals. WWI is on the horizon, jazz music is burgeoning, and Bleu’s life unravels.

Review

Possessions, ghosts, spirits, and a 103 year old mystery bring together a cast of characters that will intrigue and possibly horrify you.

This is the second in the Simone Doucet series. Simone has Creole blood and discovered in the first book that she could communicate with her ancestors and uncover the mystery of why they perished. While the first book was tame, this one is a bit more dangerous because it isn’t just Simone’s body that the ghosts inhabit, they take over several of her friend’s bodies, and it creates quite an incident.

In the first book, we get the full story of her ancestor, but in this novel, it is told in bits and pieces until near the end. I’m not sure which way I prefer, but I know that the little dribs and drabs sprinkled throughout the first half of the book only piqued my interest in who was trying to communicate with Simone and why. I did find it interesting that the ghosts were able to track her to New York, where she lived, and were not bound to the area where they died. But this is what brings her to New Orleans during Mardi Gras, well, partially, anyway.

Outside of trying to decipher what the ghosts are trying to tell her, Simone is connecting with other family members that she never knew about before. She is connecting with them in an unusual way, but it brings an added dimension to the story. We all have skeletons in our closets; we just may not know about all of them. But Bleu wants her help in solving her murder and reconnecting her with those that were important to her 103 years ago.

I enjoyed the interactions between the characters and the ghosts. I am not sure why Simone tried to keep it a secret from her roommates, but they figured it out pretty quickly. This was actually a good thing because they could watch out for her and make sure she was ok if a ghost inhabited her body.

There is even a little romance in this book between Simone and her roommate Mitchell. She keeps him at bay until she realizes that he can adapt to her gift.

This book is set in early 2020, and Covid is just beginning, so there are several references to the virus. I think that helps bring it closer to home in a way. It is something that is happening in the world and in the book.

If you like mysteries and paranormal facets, you just might enjoy this book. We give it 5 paws up.
